    @ka4o_pi4a Intel 7260 ac and pretty much only that. I think there was also a Broadcom-based mini-PCI Express 802.11ac card but I'm not sure.
    Any other choice would require M.2 to PCI Express converter which limits throughput and replacement of antennas (there are new connectors on M.2 cards)

    Not all cases, if you really need 16GB Ram. :)

    Same to me, I also tried once a i5-560 with same result, using 4threads = Intelspec.+133Mhz,
    using 2Core=Intelspec.+2*133Mhz, don't now why i5-520 stays the same.
    Use 4, 2, 1 core in prime and you will see.

    BTW, nice temps, which prog. did you meassuring with ?

    Windows 10 Doesn't make automatic changes to registry. Its becoz Windows Update had updated the AMD driver automatically.
    @Andy53 just search the whole registry for KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2 and make all the entries to 0.
    Brightness control will resume working normally again.

    BTW i upgraded to i5 560M and it has become faster and updated to the new build of windows 10 (10586.71) much more smoother and lighter now getting the full Windows 10 experience.
    560M is clocking @2.93GHz for 2 cores at full load temps 75 max
    Tips :
    Windows 10 Disable Superfetch(Not optimsied), dmwappushservice, Windows Error Reporting Service, Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, Security Center( if u want more RAM), Connected User Experiences and Telemetry( this is that feedback info which Microsoft wants lol).

    Yes after about 5 times I just reverted to W7Pro instead of constant fiddle with registry.
    And by fact it revert registry because I did have newest drivers and brightness control was working and after restart wasn't, without driver update.

    intel wifi ac 7260 works fine in my 5740g.

    coretemp and SIW, the temps are under load just 10°C cooler than before with i5 520m, since i just undusted the heatsink and replaced thermal paste with arctic mx2, also the laptop is raised so the fan can suck in air much easier.

    Hi
    I'm going to send my Acer retired and give it to my girlfriend. I am anxious to get a laptop to work as long battery life as possible. I thought about it to replace the processor (i have i5 430m). Which of them would you propose?
    I wanted to change a display)(current is little scratched). Can you recommend where I can buy LCD with better image quality?
    And my last question: Is it possible to turn off Radeon 5650m and use intel hd graphic?
    Thanks for the help

    Hi. I have a new problem with my 5740G. When I close the laptop's screen and leave it work some time (30 min. and more) without opening the lid and then open it, the screen turn it's lights on but stay black. If I put it to sleep and wake it up again it works fine. The problem occures from time to time. I try reinstall displey driver.

    @commanderkaran
    Thanks for the info, I will try it.

    @Landa1991
    There are some Utra-low Voltage CPU versions of ours with ends with UM instead of M and have a TDP of 18W,
    but don't now if they are supported by our BIOS, never saw it don in this thread and also don't now if it brings something.
    You have to google for laptops of that time who used them to see battery life, but you can also use a battery with double
    capacity.

    If you mean with better image LCD higher resolution, that's not possible for this laptop, also its not possible to
    switch HD5650 off an used CPU-graphics.

    those inte cpus in UM version are generally nonsense/bullsh!t because u can just take a normal M version of the cpu and go in windows under power mangament set maximum processor power state to like 50% 30% this will force it to clock down like the UM version of the cpu, and consume the same amount of energy.

    the UM cpus are just generally a permission for the laptop manufacturers to supply the laptop with a very bad cooling /power supply system.

    for example if i set it with i5 520m/i7 640m to 0% in windows, they both clock with lowest multiplier to 1176mhz resulting for both in a TDP of 3,6w. if u combine this with a 12cell 10400mah battery u will get maximum battery lifetime upto 6 hours.

    As far as I now it's in general for all Intel CPU's over the years.
    I Think they don't make specific i3 or i5 but a general wafer, test it and internally connect/de-connect it to be a specific CPU,
    depending on test results.

    I search for the CPU spec's and found this in global;

    Table 21. 35-W Standard Voltage Processor Idle Power
    Symbol Parameter Min Typ Max T j
    P C1E Idle power in the Package C1e state - - 16 W 50ºC
    P C3 Idle power in the Package C3 state - - 7.5 W 35ºC
    P C6 Idle power in the Package C6 state - - 3.8 W 35ºC

    Table 23. 18-W Ultra Low Voltage Processor Idle Power
    Symbol Parameter Min Typ Max T j
    P C1E Idle power in the Package C1e state - - 12 W 50ºC
    P C3 Idle power in the Package C3 state - - 5.0 W 35ºC
    P C6 Idle power in the Package C6 state - - 2.6 W 35ºC

    I think it will do some more undervolting, what's more important than only underclocking in terms of powersaving,
    but results are about 30% in savings.
    As I say before, don't now how it works out in practice.

    Thanks for answers guys.

    I think the best choice for me is i7-640m. They have the same TDP as i5 430m, but have 4mb cache, and virtualization (That's the only difference between the i5 and i7?)

    If intel graphic card dont work I try undervolting graphic card.This will be difficult...

    @Andy53
    Im looking LCD with better colors, brightness distribution, contrast. I know that four different companies produce these displays (AUO/CMO/LG/Samsung) I do not know which one makes the best.
    I wonder if there is somewhere a comparison of these displays. I found only information about the contrast and brightness.

    Maybe someone here has changed display and knows more?

    ps. Andy I'm jealous of your USB 3.0. How do you do it? :)

    @Landa1991

    i7-640M is the fastest DualCore but also used the most current, same TDP will not say used same current, you also
    have to update BIOS to V1.28 for it.
    So saving current by undervolting and clock down graphics will be useless against faster CPU.

    i5 are in two type's, 400 and 500 series, 500 have bigger turbo jumps and support more options like VT and AES,
    same as i7-600 but with 3mb cache.

    About the screens, zebandido once replaced one, but I think there will be not much diff. in quality.
    At the time it was a cheap laptop and that they used diff. screens had to do with availability for there massproduction,
    but don't now fore sure if there is little diff.

    USB3 is indeed very nice, but a bit tricky, you must have some electronics/solder experience to make it,
    see page 514 #5139 and page 522 #5212.

    @Andy53
    I also did not expect much difference in LCD screens however, and so I am forced to replace LCD screen. The 20 nits is always a difference when "displays for laptops and mobile devices are usually between 200 and 300 nits on average. A rating over 300 nits is solid and a rating above 500 nits is extremely good.".
    If anyone still needed by the new display (although I doubt that many more people had these laptop ... :))
    I found a site where people can buy matte display for acer 5740g.

    I have little experience in soldering I will try a new USB to me very in handy.But first I'll try start with the easier things, maybe this acer will teach me how to modify laptops. For now ordered palmrest, backplate and still wonder over the processor. Once your words I do not know whether it still makes sense to be replaced. Especially since I will try to reduce its clock to 1,5Ghz. I thought to choose i7 740 (four low clocked cores), but I read on the forum that this processor very heats.
    I wonder whether the 4mb cache varies much in performance. I mean ordinary use Windows, no one will be playing on this laptop.

    btw. thanks for the answers. I did not think anyone else is interested in such old model

    @Landa1991

    It's not really clear to me what you want to do with this laptop, but I read two things.

    Upgrade to give him a long battery life as possible :
    Don't take a faster CPU but an UM CPU, you have 30% less current use on CPU-base in theory , don't now if it will support in our laptop, or use the CPU you already have and buy a double capacity battery.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Upgrade to make him as fast as possible :
    Buy the fasted CPU you can get for a reasonable price.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    Buying a faster CPU an trying to clock it down makes no sence, you also have to undervolting him to have best results.
    To notice a faster CPU in all day use it must at least 30% faster than the one you have, 3mb vs 4mb is only measurable.
    If you don't game or use heavy programs than don't waste your money on a faster CPU, in both cases an SSD will give you a faster experience.
    With i7-740 it's not the heat itself that will make a problem, this laptop has a good cooling system, but it's the fan
    that will be used frequently, CPU in Idle clocks down to 4 x 0,9 GHz.

    Most people in this threat buying this laptop for cheap gaming and I think will play an older game from time to time, that's also the people who are still interesting in this threat.

    I hope things are clear up a bit. :rolleyes:

    @Andy53 what speed did your i7 640m turbo boost clock at while running the fritz chess benchmark? mine clocked at 3,06ghz in this case. i think the turbo boost behavior of the i7 640m is really unusual since it seems to clock down in special cases of full load for example when video rendering or gaming or the cpu is on like 90-95% load on all threads it clocks to 3,2ghz, some stress test tools cause it clock to 3.06ghz and some like prime95 makes it clock to 2,93ghz. and this is not thermal related.

    my i7 640m in acer 5740g with 8gb ddr3-1066mhz ram win7 64bit scored the following results:

    Relative speed: 11.44
    Kilo nodes per second: 5489

    @phoenix222

    On Win10 Pr0;
    Relative speed: 11.55
    Kilo nodes per second: 5541

    On Win7 Ultra;
    Relative speed: 11.87
    Kilo nodes per second: 5698 , Both stable at 3191Mhz, rat. 24 , monitoring It with Hwinfo64.

    Edit: Maybe a stepping issue ? Mine is K0.

    But I notice that CPU was 25% under load on W7 all the time after the benchmark, caused by svchost.exe, thanks to not good working MS Update !!

    Also placed a new SSD, with my multiboot partitions a lot of trial and error to migrate it, lucky I have USB3 to push this Image and Ghost files back and forwards !

    Here are the result of Samsung Evo 250Gb on W7, without 25% CPU-load. :D

    Maybe a bit off-topic, but my recently bought acer E1 have same svchost.exe problem, this time 50% load and 3Gb memory use after
    starting a program.
    This time it's not failing to upload, but my feelings says it's trying to do so.
    It's a fresh W7-64 install, anyone got a clue ?
    Have anyone else got this on their Acer 5740 ?
    Any solutions ? Downloads ?

    @Andy53 If you hoover the mouse over the svchost.exe process in Process Explorer it will show what services is it responsible for. See what it handles - I'm guessing Windows Update will be on the list.

    Thanks for your quick answer.
    I let it search for update's for an hour and nothing found.
    Then I start again and search for update's , found 150 !
    It's now buzzy downloading and I think it will be fixed.
    What's happening with MS Update, think I am not the only one.

    I don't know but something is definitely weird - it did the same for me a while ago. I suspected it might be partially my fault as I pick and choose updates to install, in order to omit anything related to telemetry and Windows 10 update. I though maybe the fact that some things are updated while others are not, might be causing an issue here or there, but apparently that's not the case. Other users are noticing issues as well - some says it's deliberate on part of MS and that the same thing used to happen to XP after Win 7 had been launched.
    Either way it definitely got worse than it used to be.

    @ka4o_pi4a It works for me with 15.200.1062.1004 driver dated 2015-08-03 which apparently is Catalyst 15.7.1.
    I have not updated it since so I can't say anything about subsequent versions. I'm also using Win 7 64bit.

    Can I replace the motherboard on this laptop? My GPU (5650) is fried and I wish to replace this motherboard with a non discrete GPU motherboard (using only integrated Intel GPU ). Will it work? Also does anyone know which Acer models use the same motherboard in case I am not able to find it for this exact model (5740G)?

    You can replace the mobo with a non-G one as long as you don't have Core i7 720QM as CPU (as it doesn't have graphics integrated on die).
    Also remember you are not looking for the mobo for 5740G now but for 5740.

    As for other notebooks that use the same motherboard - there might be one Gateway which was otherwise identical and I think it had the same BIOS releases as 5740(G) which would indicate the same motherboard. I didn't have the time to check it out as I'm about to leave but it seems that it might be a Gateway nv5925u - check it out.

    As I helped a friend with a laptop who want to replace W8.1 for W7, who was not supported for it,
    I came across this program, https://sdi-tool.org/download/
    Looks very handy for all my OS on our laptop with good results.
    Any (negative) thoughts about it ?

    I found some cheap 840qm processors. I currently own an asus 5740G with i3 330M 2.13 GHZ, and a ati 5650 (I think this is the GPU card).

    My question to you guys is: Can I upgrade the current CPU to that i7?

    Also, I currently have 8GB of ram. Can I bump it up to 16 GB after I upgrade the CPU?

    Thanks

    Yes providing you have newest BIOS.
    8GB modules will work fine.
    Don't forget to remove plastic shield of heatsink. And use very good thermal compound. Familiarise yourself how to use RW Everything to control fan speed ( you will need this ).

    I do not recommend upgrading to the low clocked quadcore cpus like the i7 840qm because they were still manufactured in the old 45nm process and thus are very inefficient with their 45W TDP and become very hot. but they can handle 16GB ram.

    Instead i recommend upgrading to the i7 640m, it is a high clocked dual core and already got manufactued in the 32nm process, thus being very efficient with a TDP of 35W. unluckily it can only max. handle 8GB ram.

    What is the max memory support for one slot? (i5 430m) 4gb or 8gb?

    If it can handle 16gb with i7, so we can attach 8gb per slot.
    But most of websites says, max memory is 4gb per slot.

    I have I7-720 and can confirm that works fine with 2 x 8GB. Only problem is the heat. Which has been dealt with heatsink lapping and extensive use of rw everything.

    Websites claim just 4GB support correctly because this laptop never was intended to work with 4 core i7. And 8 GB modules will work only with 4 core i7.

    Anyone have updated to Windows10 and have the problem that the Brightness is stuck at 100%? Is there any solution that solve this problem?

    You have to edit one registry value. You can find it in one of my posts. Bare in mind that from my experience W10 will revert it back at any time.

    From my experience: it's possible to install the Crimson, after you can install the Catalyst so you can have the last Crimson with the total control of the Catalyst(only the app)
