    What thermal paste you suggest?
and another question, what is the maximum frequence supported for the bank ram?

Gelid GC Extreme. Ram frequency is capped by cpu. As far as I can remember 1333mhz dual cores and 1600 quads

Get cheap quad. Make sure that you have clean radiator. Remove plastic s**t from contact surface. You can do heatsink "lapping". And enjoy new life of your laptop. It gets hot but I was using my one for over a year as daily driver without problem. Major problem with quads is your battery. Because of lot higher power usage worn battery can make cause you laptop suddenly switching off due to high voltage drop. And you will be able to switching back on with battery showing like 50-60%.

Wow I must say that after 8 years and 606 pages that its nice to come back and see one of my all time fav sleeper laptops still has a loyal following.
I haven't been as much of an enthusiast as I was back when this thread was started but now that my oldest kids are now 11 and the youngest are now 4 (2 sets of twins) its time to take up my hobby once again. Might just have to go searching for that unicorn once again :) @downloads I'll be sure to get you to start the next owners lounge :p

Hey unifilek, as you said I got power-offs with i7-840QM on battery.
I think I can't overcome this on my own and need suggestions.
What options we have; a new battery?

With higher power cpus our laptop cannot provide enough current from battery. You can try new one, maybe 9 cell one but I cannot guarantee that this will help. Way I have done is limit power in windows power options running on battery and give full blast while on psu. Mayby some of our colleagues can say more about power delivery on acer motherboard, maybe there is bit of room for tweaks. Cannot really check anything because I don't own this machine anymore.

I can't believe this is still going. I have converted my laptop unto a remote machine. I use it mostly for day trading stuff but it gets used almost all the time.

I have taken the board out of the laptop and was going to make a custom case for it but I got lazy. It is now sitting on an unused desk with a massive copper heatsink on the CPU and southbridge heatsinks from an old desktop on gpu and on the southbridge.

This was my Frankenstein project, which looks horrible but works good.

It idle around 35*c CPU/GPU. Have not stressed it too much as it does what I want it to do.

    Hi everybody. ;)

I have a 5740G almost new (hold for years by an old relative, basicly not using it).
Originally it had an i3-330m, but I upgraded to an i5-560M (following this thread informations), and mounted an SSD (Samsung 830 256 GB).
Now performance are still good for web browsing and home office use, so I'd like to continue using it.

It runs Win 7 64 bit, and bios 1.28, just upgraded to run i5-560M.

I'm very interested in this modded bios to run updated Intel microcode, to fix Spectre and Meltdown.

As far as I understand, my new CPU i5-560M should have the same CPUID (20655), so this bios by mimmo345 should be ok for me.

Could you tell me, please, how to exactly update it?
Last time I used the package available here: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/ID/content/support-product/1878;-
    https://global-download.acer.com/GD...p3=ASPIRE 5740G&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=AAP_1
I created a USB key with Rufus, to start the notebook in DOS, and then just launched DOSFLASH.BAT in DOS folder.

What should I exactly do, to use your modded bios? :)
(I downloaded it from here: https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thr...-in-Acer-Aspire-5740-Bios-Phoenix-1-28?page=6, because the link in this thread is no more available for free - I suppose it's always you).

    Thanks :)

Today i had the balls to disassemble my trusty laptop to change the thermal paste after almost 9 years of use oh well.

everything went wall beside that i broke the right side 2 usb ports lol FML.

anyways i bought the cooler master mastergel pro bcause its the only good one i found locally
so here is the test before and after
100% before the change it used to get +100 sometimes

    idle before

100% after it barely touched 74c

    idle after

im really impressed tbh the whole thing now feel cooler to touch

    extra one :D
    [IMG]

im so far happy with the change minus 2 usb ports RIP, I got an SSD too this week and this thing is flying it cold boot to windows in less than 10 sec

    Hi Guys.
Coming back here after a long time!

Hope you guys are doing good. Great Job @downloads and the community for keeping this thread alive.

I have trouble with my machine after a long. I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts about the problem. Turned it on today, the Acer screen and Windows Dual boot screen showed up fine. But immediately after that some artifacts showed up on screen while the Windows 7 logo was there... The artifacts were moving and were covering 30% of the screen. After the Windows 7 logo screen everything just got scrambled.

I then turned off the laptop and turned it on again and there is no display. Tried multiple things.. the system goes into BIOS (I can hear the beep).... While in BIOS the Caps lock & Num lock lights work... But If I let it boot nothing really happens. I also tried cleaning up the RAM modules and tried them individually but no luck. The only thing pending is to hook up an external monitor to check if the display is gone. But I feel the Video Chip/Card is dead.

    Any thoughts from you guys?

Thanks in advance for any inputs or suggestions.

It sound like a GPU. Testing with an external monitor is a good idea though.

    Hi. Guys, @downloads ,
Thought of leaving an update. It was indeed the GPU chip that had failed. The local Acer Service Center here managed to replace the chip, and its up and running again!. It also seems to have got a decent internal clean-up! Running cooler than earlier!! :)

    @woofgoo

Most likely not due to a different connector which may and probably be an issue for automatic fan control.

@woofgoo It probably won't be noticeably different than the original one. You would have to find the specs and see the difference in the CFM at given rpm and how loud is it.

    Hi woofgoo

Don't now if you have the schematics, but on page 38 you see the fan.

Pin 1 PWM connected thru 2 Ohm resistor to PWM out from chip U15b on page 39
    Pin 2, 5 and 6 to ground
Pin 3 Tacho connected on page 39 thru 10K resistor RN54 to +3,3V, and pin 31 U15b, so laptop will measuring fan speed.
    Pin 4 connected to +5V

    Don't no the colors of our acer fan, do not now where to look for my uploaded pictures, but I guess;
    Red=5v Black= ground and Yellow= PWM

Your second fan is from acer travelmate, don't now if it will fit.

    EDIT,
In above I told Tacho is not used because it hangs on pull up resistor, its not true, it also hangs
    on pin 31 U15b, chipset ?

    Hi guys,

My laptop seems to have a black screen of death (Not sure). When I boot up, it sits in the black screen for a few seconds before flashing a screen full of discolored blocks one time and then going back to black screen. The laptop is not producing any error beeps or anything. It happened a couple times already in the past after my auto window 10 updates. Those times I manage to boot up my laptop after 20-30 minutes of removing battery/holding power button. This time, nothing is working. I been with this laptop for a while, would not want to scrap it since I just got a new SDD for it 1 year ago. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Have you try to boot up in BIOS ?
Hearing no beeps or anything then it's maybe a RAM failure, try to swap it, DDR can get worse over time.
    Try simple things first.

I get no response pressing F2 (bios i think), only a beep sound. The screen remains black. If my GPU failed, would these symptoms happen?

    Black screen
    Fan no spin
Led lights on, but no reaction from laptop

If my gpu did indeed fail, is my laptop pretty much going to the dumpster since the gpu is attached internally? Ebay quoted me $200 for a repair of the gpu or cpu, but I am not sure if a 10 year old laptop is worth $200. I was originally going to try to DIY repair it, but it might seems this issue is way over my head.

    Thanks

@xSase There are used motherboards on e-bay for $70-90. That would seem more reasonable.

    Hi,

Thank you guys for all the useful information. I removed the ram and ssd last night. I plugged both back in tonight and the laptop is completely dead (no power lights or anything). I took apart the laptop and re-connected all the connections. The LED lights for power don't come on anymore (it usually comes on even if I don't press the power button). Not sure how that could happen

Then you have not re connect the power button in the right way.
But if the laptop was dead after removing the SSD, ram must be inside, then you have done what's possible.
Maybe you can look for another mobo, like downloads said.

    To all:
I want to upgrade cpu from i3-330. If i buy i5-560m do we still need microcode for bios v1.28 to work correctly? Or this cpu is already plug and play without any mods.

You do need the latest BIOS otherwise you'll need to press F1 at every boot to continue.

I disassemble it two times to check every cable and cpu legs - still does not work. When I press power button fan spins for 5sec then stop. Screen is black....

Yes - mine is running with Core i5 560M and BIOS 1.28. I switched it on and entered BIOS setup just to verify that I'm not mistaken about that.

does anybody know how exactly the automatic fan control at the acer 5740g works and upon which sensor values it decides the fan speed because it obviously doesnt seem to be the cpu temp?

Why do you think it's not the temp ?
Only when turning on it spins for testing purposes I think, and properly some speed-tables in bios related to the temp.
Put a quad-core in it and you will see. :D

because the automatic fan control is somehow defective at mine acer5740g, manual fan regulation with RWE still works fine but in auto mode fan keeps off until cpu hits 90°c under prime95 then it cools the cpu to 70°c and turns off again. so my guess is the fan controllers uses an own temp sensor that somehow measures heatsink temp itself and that one became defective?

Looking at the schematics at page 38 you can see an i.c. U40, who is monitoring two transistors, Q34 and Q20, used as a
thermal diode for T8 and System, and capable to close the system when temp exceeds 90c.
Don't now where the are placed exactly, but in a modern system there are more temp. measurements, at least in the CPU, so he will now when to Idle.

Here a screenshot of HWiNFO 64, where you can see and check if the censors are working ,

When it was working fine with i3 i5 , then maybe the heat was so massive with i7, there was no time for a lower rpm

@Audizzz Both SpeedStep and TurboBoost are enabled by default and need no drivers to work. You'd have to have an option in BIOS to disable either of those, co rest assured everything works as intended.
