They have to work. That is not driver dependent but BIOS dependent. You can check CPU speed frequency under load (1 core and 2 cores) if you want to confirm that it's working but it has to.

    I don't know that, sorry.

I think better refresh rates only works with tube monitors, lcd's are too slow for it, they don't react faster on it, did you notice any flickering on them ?

    Hi to all
How is everybody doing, after about 10 years ? Still using this laptop ?
Mine have a lot of issues, bought it in July 2010 and is yet broken, after intensive using it.

Speakers are as good as gone.
Keys are working for about 50% ( my fault, broke the clip on the Mobo )
DVD burner is not reliable anymore
Power connector is broken inside, gave bad connection, so I put the battery in it all the time, and at last the battery was not charging anymore and in the end short-circuit the power electronic on the Mobo I guess.
Both hinges are broken so I have to put a brick behind the screen to put it upright on the table...
Sensitivity of the touchpad became very less

But fortunately is saw one for sale for 70€ in very good shape, less used and with HD5650 and Bluetooth, so I have to switch over my i7-640 cpu, 8MB memory, Usb3 and SSD, and I be ready for the future. :)

Why I bought it again ? Because I used it with multiboot Wxp on it, and first gen. i-core is the last one it will work on.

And at last, still loving this laptop...

    Hey guys.
I got this laptop from a friend.
It would be a decent use for short term in comparison to the existing DELL I've been reduced to (from Helios 500 all AMD as a result of failed BIOS upgrade).

Given that the 5740G in my care has fairly basic specs, it DOES have Windows 10 on it... so I was thinking I can easily upgrade the SSD and RAM.
Now, given the CPU is dual core, that's a bit of a problem.
Is there any way this laptop would support i7-720qm?
I know that the qm is 45W TDP cpu, and therefore, the increase in heat generated from extra 10W would probably be relatively large, but my question is would it be 'critically high'?
More to the point, does the BIOS support the i7-720qm?
The Bios to my knowledge is the same one it shipped with (1.09v I think)... it hadn't been updated, and given my lackluster BIOS update failure on Helios 500 (which is far more advanced), I don't think I'd like to risk it.

It would be useful to have 4 cores for my college course along with the moderately more powerful GPU for my larger 3d studio Max files and GIMP/Photoshop work, but I need to know if its possible.

According to the chipset specifications, the i7-720QM should be compatible.

Also, do I NEED to disassemble the whole thing to get to the CPU and GPU for repasting and cleaning?

Core i7-720QM is compatible. I'm not sure it you need to update BIOS for it to work properly - I don't think so though.
The cooling is adequate for this CPU according to users that have done that (it's described somewhere ins this thread)

As for disassembly - you will need to disassemble the laptop but it's not a hard thing to do - see here for some images.

Well that's pretty great to know in that case.
    Thank you.
I also plan on using quality thermal paste like GC Gelid Extreme on the CPU and GPU of course.

It would certainly tie me over to invest a small amount of cash into upgrading that unit and use it until Zen 2 desktop hw replacement unit like Helios 500 used with 2700 and Vega 56 is released.

Plus the 5740G would be a far more capable gaming machine for certain occasions.

    @Deks
I used a i7-740 for a while in it, overheating is no problem, there is a very good cooling system, only downside is that the fan will run frequently.
I personal would go for a 740 or 820, to go as close to the 2ghz for the basic stuff, (non quad core software) prices
are not that different these days.
Don't forget to remove the black foil from the heat sink.
With quad core your ram speed go from 1066 to 1333mhz and you can use 16GB in it, but not al PC1600 ram will work in it, read back in this trhead or see if you can borrow it, before you buy.
Also notice that SSD speed is max. 250Mb/s in this laptop.

Good luck with your upgrade and welcome to the club

so my acer 5740g now also had this "dead,no power,no leds" defect and i managed to repair the mainboard by desoldering the EC bios chip, programming it with a CH341A programmer, then soldering it back again. first tried to program it with a programming clip and without desoldering, but that somehow did not work.

just want to remind that if anyone still uses this laptop here and gets the same defect its most likely the EC bios chip who lost its programming sooner or later it will hit everyone as its a common issue.

Mine is still around as a second backup machine. I start it every week, synchronize documents and e-mails, update everything and I put it back.
Still works fine and performance is OK - the only think that is not acceptable is screen quality and resolution. It was fine in 2010 but these days it's way too dim.

I just pieced a previously broken 5740G just today. Think it was the 333G32Mn model, as it had the 512MB HD5470, not the 1GB 5650.

Without further ado, here's what frankenstein parts were fitted to rise this 5740G from the dead:

    - freshly flashed EC SPI ROM from a old LGA775 board - the issue I originally bought this 5740G with was, probably well known to some of you, a bad EC (KBC) chip, which would result in no power, charge or anything. I managed to get hold of the EC image through Google.
-15.6" AuO LCD from a dead ASUS X5DAF
    - LCD assembly sans hinges from a Aspire 5735 (the LCD hinge assembly is the same one found on the 5536/5542/5738/5740 so they were of course compatible)
    - i3-380M from a Compaq CQ57-460EA (which got a i3-350M in place)
    - 2x2GB DDR3-8500 from an Aspire 5739
    - nordic keyboard from an Aspire 7738G
    - Centrino N-100 WLAN from a dead Aspire 5349
    - Lite-On DS-8A5SH DVD-RW from the same unit the WLAN comes from
    - and a 500GB HDD from a friend's ASUS X540NA (he upgraded his HDD to a 1TB SSD)

    Hello.

    I'm new here.

    I've got this laptop (the non-G version) i3-330M, 4GB ram + ATI Radeon HD 5650 I believe.

    i have done a couple of things to it... Added a 250GB SSD + a caddy so I could instal a 2.5 1TB harddrive.

It had lots of problems. I had to buy an old laptop that had compatible parts that fit on this one, and it's been working fine since (I can't update bios and USB Hub on the right side does not work).

However, I have a couple of problems:
1- the side USB Hub stopped working. I have no clue why, I've already opened it, unpuggled the cable and replugged it to make sure it was well placed, nothing. I changed the cable, nothing.
It's weird because before I installed all the replacement parts to get it to work, it was working just fine, really... I have no clue how to check 5v or anything like that, i'm really not knowledgeable at all when it comes to eletronics and soldering stuff.
Note: There's no beeps, nothing. I connect a keyboard and it doesn't show / do / make any sort of sound or beep or anything.

2- I cannot update the bios. It has currently the 1.16 version. I was trying to update it to the latest 1.28, but i cannot, i get an error. And after some google searching, it seems that i need a battery plugged in? Mine is dead, and buying a new one is 30€ lol. Is there a way around this to instal the new bios without getting a new battery? I was honestly hoping this would've fixed the USB Hub not working problem. It probably won't, so if anyone knows how to fix these 2 things, I'd be very appreciated, as I still like this laptop alot and I'd like to keep using it! :D

Is it possible that the plug from my motherboard that the right USB hub connects to may be broken?

First of all - that actually is a G version - even if it isn't labeled so. Non-G versions only have the integrated HM55 IGP and no trace Radeon.

    Now, onto your issues:

USB - to bluntly put it, both your cable and MB are fine. If you disassembled it, you'll notice the USB ports are on a separate PCB. Well, that PCB is dead.

BIOS - AFAIK you can't circumvent the battery check. Not even on a 6530G I couldn't circumvent it (that one had a semi-dead DC circuit - it would basically work on battery only) so you're SOL on that until you get (or borrow) an battery for it.

Quick question, will a i7-720QM work on a 5740G that came with HD5470? Or would I need to upgrade the mobo to the one with HD5650?

Thanks for the reply. I see it's been updated to the latest BIOS, v1.28. Guess it's just a matter of getting some MX4 and just sticking that i7 in.

Just updated my old 5740G, I updated the CPU from i3 330M to i7 820qm, Ram updated too from 4Gb to 16Gb DDR3, SSD 240Gb Kingston and Windows 10 Home. The bios is 1.28.
Temperature max (36°C ambient) are 85°C but most the time it stay about 43-46 at idle and 62-70 working so It is working like a new device.

Hi Andy53, it has been a long time...
Well, my 5740 is still working well, even if it's a sort of "Frankenlaptop" it has a double O.S. Windows 7 , XP , an Intel I7 840HQ, 16GB Ram, a backlite keyboard, and a sort of carbon look palm rest, of course the speakers were buzzing so I replaced them, Yes, I still like it too and I think it's a reliable machine...

Hi Stardust Crusader ,Yes, you can upgrade to a backlit keyboard : the acer aspire 5810t backlited one is exactly the same of the 5740 but it has backlit ; the only problem is that our mainboard does not have the connector for the backlit power source flat cable (the slim one) so you will have to get this power somewhere else on the mainboard . I got it from the usb board on the right hand side of the notebook , it will give 5 volts that 's the exact voltage it needs: of course you will need to dismantle the notebook to operate on the mainboard ; an usb port has four pins, the external two are positive and negative 5 volts , one problem is that usb ports are always active when the notebook is on so or you will have backlite always on or you wil have to put a device to turn it on and off whenever you want. I did so putting a mini switch taken from a broken walkman on the Kensington hole (I had to take off the metal plate in the inner side) and more as this kind of keyboard is a bit thicker than the original : you will have to lower the metal edge sourronding the keyboard in the zones connected to the clips of the notebook (14 in total). If you want to have a detailed procedure of this mod, you can have a look at "Acer TimelineX 3820 backlit keyboard mod", it's related to a different notebook but still very useful!!! , About the gpu it has a dedicated Ati Radeon HD5650 cheers boazz

You can upgrade up to 16GB (2x8) if you get an i7 quad core as the 840QM , otherwise the dual core one (i.e. the i7 620m) won't handle it and it would crash in a bsod
