I think I saw a solution to this problem- you need to go to the touchpad settings and disable or turn to the lowest the setting that is responsible for detecting the accidental touches of a hand while the user is typing.
Something like PalmCheck in Synaptics touchpad.

I found a possible beep solution without downgrading drivers...
Open Device Manager...click on View and check "show hidden devices"
go to "non-plug and play drivers"...click on the "Beep"...and go to the Driver tab,
Here you can disable the startup and stop the service.
I haven't tested it since I run mostly on AC power with no battery installed...
Maybe somebody with battery installed can test it? -
So I got a bargain! Wish I could of got the better graphics card...
-
is it better , when you always run on AC power, to take the battery out of the notebook, and when you unplug it, to take the battery and put it into the computer?? i have ran the bios upgrades, and whatnot, but im reading, a few places that people, use the AC charger option, WITHOUT the battery in the computer, (95% of the time, mine is plugged in and not using the battery)
Thx
Brian -
-
Was just an idea...(and I didn't google for it because it's not a problem for me) -
If you use it 95% of the time on AC...I would take it out.
You can also read the pdf manual that came with the PC for more battery tips...(page24)
By following the battery conditioning process you condition your
battery to accept the maximum possible charge. Failure to follow this
procedure will prevent you from obtaining the maximum battery
charge, and will also shorten the effective lifespan of the battery.
In addition, the useful lifespan of the battery is adversely affected by
the following usage patterns:
• Using the computer on constant AC power with the battery
inserted. If you want to use constant AC power, you are advised to
remove the battery pack after it is fully charged. -

Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
Far Cry 2, Left4Dead, Dragon Age: Origins, F.E.A.R. 2, Sims 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and World in Conflict are a list of recent games that can be played on high details. -
HD5650 is a mid-range GPU and there are only few modern games that you can play on high details with AA enabled.
If you had switched the AA off you could have been playing on high settings.
BTW in my opinion high details with no AA look better than medium details and AA enabled. -
-
Since, you choose to play at 8xAA (the highest setting), it's obvious that you know AA kills performance and that means it is your own choice to play games at medium details (medium AF settings).
In reality, the HD 5650 can play most games on high details (high AF settings). -

Hey guys... Now I'm also a proud owner of Aspire 5740G :-D I bought my lappy yesterday... just finished updating versions drivers that I found in this thread :-D
Thanks a lot for this informative thread... and hats off to 'downloads' for his dedication and the contribution he made
I need some help from you guys... When I got my lappy it was having 2 partitions... C drive was of 227 GB and D drive was of 225 GB... I wanna make C drive of around 80 GB, is there any way to do so?
And how to make Recovery disks? -
-
Update: I deleted my D drive and tried shrinking my C drive from Disk Management under Computer management in Control panel, but Windows wont allow me to me make it smaller than 227 GB :-( -
Wow...this thread got long while I was away!!
Just thought I'd let y'all know that I got my replacement 5740 back from the dealer and it's pretty good. I don't play the latest games, but it rocks WoW, HL2, Portal, FM2010, BF2142...and Cannon Fodder!!
Performance wise, the GPU overclocks to 670/950 with no artifacts and no stability problems and I'm yet to see it go about about 75C even after a few hours. On WoW, with the quality settings one notch below Ultra, I get 70fps average on the lappy screen or about 40-50fps on my 1920x1080 HDTV.
In general, I'm really impressed with the performance and build quality of this machine, for the price. If you have any problems I recommend doing anything Downloads tells you to and making sure all the drivers are up to date. -
basically youre having this problem because the trackpad is set to turn off when youre typing - so if you hit the wasd keys, the mouse will stop working
this is an in-butilt function of the synaptics touchpad and to turn it off (and im at work so recalling the steps from memory, forgive any errors) go to control panel>devices>mouse>synaptics> settings > sensitivity > palmtouch (cant remember exact name but something with 'palm' in it that stops the trackpad from picking up the touch of your palm when you type, now - turn the sensitivity down one notch and hey presto you can move the mouse while typing.
hope this helps buddy let me know if you have any issues
cheers

You may find that a boot time defragmenter (e.g. Paragon, diskeeper etc) would move the blocking file but if going the boot route then probably better to directly address the issue as many boot disk partition managers will resize partitions in any direction and are happy to move the OS or any other files out of the way as the OS is not in use at that time. -
If you decide to dismantle the notebook PM me for instructions. -
If I dismantled it myself I would instantly void my warranty (I think?) and I'd rather not do that just in case it went wrong. If I send it away I'll have to wait 14-21 WORKING days (basically 3-4 weeks in essence). That kinda sucks!
-
Ok. I'm at a loss here.
I received my 5740G-6395 today and everything seems ok except for one nasty issue.
I can't seem to mount any CDs or DVDs that I place in the drive. It spins once when it closes but Windows doesn't recognize that I have a disk in the drive.
Any ideas on what I can check to get this fixed?
Edit:
BIOS 1.16
Tried updating drivers from Acer.com
Uninstalled/Reinstalled drive
Tried both CDs and DVDs.
All I get with anything is 'please insert disk'
Ran the software at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems
Looks like an RMA. -
hey, i thinking to buy this computer, its essencialy for games can anyone tell me how many fps do you have in counter strike source?
ty -
-
In short, it will most likely be above 60 FPS if that is what you are worried about. -
So what I need to do is download a program like Diskeeper Pro Premier 2010 and defragment my C Drive... then try to shrink it further, right? -
Hey everyone it's me again haha. Well I've been using this notebook for almost a week now. Everything seems fine, really like it. However I'm kinda concerned about the temperatures. While browsing (10+tabs), itunes, some copy/pasting, browsing photos - well mostly cpu usage varies between 10-30%, core temps are 50-60 C sometimes it lowers to 45. Is it okay? I'm on Ac all the time, room temperature is around 24-26~ C. GPU temperature depends on usage, 40-56 C.
P.S. I was told by the shop manager where I bought my notebook, that there's no need to disconnect battery if I'm on Ac all the time, he said to charge/discharge battery once in 3 months, and it'll be okay. Is it true? -
Temps are fine.. and the charging is kinda true...
-
Assuming it can move system files (at boot) and be told to maximise free space etc it may well move the files you need moving in the course of doing that. My view was if you have such a tool then try it first.
To be sure of shrinking the partition you need to use something like a partition manager . . They have a free version Free partition software - free license software that will probably be up to what you need. My recommendation is to install, make the boot disk and then actually make the changes using that (i.e. not in windows). The utilities will generally work in Windows but if it goes wrong (while moving files the OS is using to move the files etc) the mess is horrible
I should just add that any changes to partition sizes sequences etc may affect your ability to do a factory restore at a later date.
Make sure you have burnt the acer recovery DVD's and backed up a full HDD image of entire disk to a USB hard drive before you start. -
aylafan, ty for you awnser can you say how many fps do you have in medium and low please? ty

I'm using the computer with the battery inside. Two reasons- first one is that batteries loose capacity regardless of whether they are used or not. I admit that using the battery will cause the capacity to drop faster than not using it but that's my second point.
I have this notebook for two and a half months now- battery wear level is zero.
Lets assume I finally get to- let's say 3% before the end of this month- what would it mean?
That my battery would lose 30% of its original capacity in 30 months- that's almost three years before it even wears down by one third.
Is it worth saving the battery and loosing an UPS function (especially that the power-cord connector is a bit loose)?
BTW the full battery saving story doesn't end here- you should keep the battery loaded between 50 and 60% and store it in the fridge (in a special bag so that no humidity gets there).
That's why I do not recommend it and consider it a bit farfetched- especially that my old notebook has a wear level of close to 40% after almost 5 years of usage which kinda proves my theory is right. -
Ok now I get it. Thanks for all the help guys!!!
Guess I was too paranoid about it lol. Downloads and what do you about the temperatures? After a full day it spiked to 70~C, tho when couple of tabs with flash videos were open. Or it's an okay temp for this cpu? (i've got i5 430m). Mostly it stayed 50-60.

Question!
I was playing with the disk manager (partitioned an external drive)...
I noticed that my recovery partition shows 100% free space! Is that normal or did I somehow erase the contents from there. I don't want to test it because that would mean to restore again....
could you guys check your Disk Manager to see if this is normal?
see attachment!
thx guys!Attached Files:

In order to offload CPU from flash video decoding- use Flash 10.1 RC.
Video decoding will be done by ATI GPU not affecting CPU load.

Just brought a Acer 5740G-434G64Mn a week ago.
Very happy so far.
Question what windows services and acer installed stuff can I get rid
of and uninstall.
I only use the laptop for net surfing and watching multimedia stuff, have not had time to try connecting it to my lounge 42inch panasonic plasma via HDMI.
Kind Regards

OK, i have a legitimate problem, everytime i try to burn the E-RECOVERY disks for the 5740-6979 it freezes on the verification process. I am using Memorex/Staples dvd's (tried 2 times already) and every time it freezes, and sits for about a hour.. or damn near... and wont go on to the next disc... anyone have this problem?? i tried it day1 when i got the computer..
it recognizes the 1st dvd as recovery1 but i cant get to the 2nd and 3rd disc.. just dont really get it honestly... anyone shed some light, or give me a good alternative way to do this? (its been on 12% verifying for 1 hour now) and i can hear the drive vroom up, then stop, vroom, stop, and last time it stopped at 6% verified on disk 1, the dvd drive works fine, burned dual laterDVD/CD/DVD before with nero10, no problems whatsoever.. just this recovery in the e-recovery panel from acer... Thanks guys.
Edit - and when i try to eject it, it does nothing, just sits there.
Edit - Oh and it was done on a fresh boot, no wireless, no daemon tools, no torrent, no NOTHING running in the background, no program, no nothing... -
Unless you hacked this or changed it back to a standard partition type to delete your recovery partition is still there -
Have you verified the media recored with Nero? Seems Acer eRercovery burns the disk too but fails to verify it- it may be low quality media or just this particular DVD burner with current firmware doesn't have a specific burning strategy for this model of DVD disk.
BTW what DVD drive do you have?
My recommendation is to buy Verbatim x16 DVD- the standard ones no LightScribe no nothing. These DVDs are supported by virtually every DVD recorder in the world and are of good quality. If these fail- then there may be a problem but at this point it looks like media+burner+high speed (x8) may be the cause. -
Nice that we have this Forum here.. -
Hi all, i have Acer aspire 5740G too, last nigt im tried to connect my laptop to tv with HDMI connection, but no luck - tv says that is no signal, laptop dont see my tv in any options, tried to reinstall last ATI drivers, tried FN + F5, tried Win 7 options to connect external display, no luck. In bios there nothing to change. In tv tried 3 hdmi ports, all not recognizing my lap.
My os Win 7 ultimate
Video driver 8.723.0.0 2010.04.06 date
Maybe can anybody give me any help please? -
-
Windows 7 has its own way of displaying through multiple displays.

Another option is to install HDMI audio driver from Realtek website- honestly I can't see how the lack of HDMI audio driver would prevent video from functioning but no harm in doing so.
Las but not least- what happens if you connect the TV with HDMI, open CCC choose Desktops & Displays tab and click detect.
You did off course change the TV input signal on the TV set to HDMI, right?
Because if you normally use something else than HDMI (SCART or sth) and then connect your laptop via HDMI, the TV set will not switch to signal from HDMI on its own (at least most TV sets won't) -
Where i must click to instal hdmi driver in cats? Im instaling with custom install and installing everything i can. For realtek you talking about Realtek ATI HDMI Audio Device? Im pluging hdmi cable in pc, in tv then changing input in tv to hdmi (1,2 or3) but no luck, tried restarting lap with cable inserted but nothing happens.
