No it’s not better than 5740G- it’s worse actually.
It’s equipped with nVidia GT330M- another rebadged nVidia GPU (GT240M welcome again).
    It’s slower than HD5650, doesn’t support DX11 etc.
I can’t comment on cooling system and how quiet 5745G is and so on but in my book if it’s slower it’s also worse unless significantly cheaper which is not the case here.

Gaming performance of HD5650 vs GT330M

No problem. If you want something that can be considered an upgrade to Aspire 5740G take a look at Acer TimelineX 5820TG.
Metal casing, HD5650, switchable graphics enabled (unlike in 5740G) and works significantly longer on battery.
I don't know how silent or cool it is though- thin metal notebooks tend to be hotter more often than not- but I'm not saying this is the case. What I'm saying is Acer TimelineX 5820TG can be considered an upgrade of Aspire 5740G as long as it is similarly priced. It's not faster by any means but metal casing and longer battery time may be interesting if adequately priced.

BTW congratulations for everybody on reaching 1000 posts- I decided to rate the thread today. So far so good ;)

    hi guys,
by the way - great forum - i found all the information that i needed for my Aspire 5740 G

I have an issue that maybe you can help me with. I just bought a TV Tunner (this one Tuner TV Leadtek DTV200 H, USB2.0 ).

Here is the catch : if i watch on digital with his own little antenna everything is fine. i checked in the "device manager" on the "universal serial bus controllers" -> intel 5 series/3400 series chipset family usb enhanced .... that the tv tunner is using 10 % of the 20 % that is allocated for the usb ports. please check capture1.jpg

But, if ill go to analogic and use the cable provided the tv tunner will use 59 % from the 20 % that is allocated. And in this case the sound will remain behind of the video. This doesn`t happen when using the digital antena (only 10% usage). - capture.jpg

The bios is the one that you provided in the first page 1.22 version just installed it minutes ago.

    Issues :
    1. the driver for the usb 2.0 is not installed correctly - if so please let me know which one should i use
    2. something is NOT a 2.0 (usb port)
    3. can i change that figure ? i was able to change it for the network (it can be changed in the local group policy - Ctrl + R -> gpedit.msc ) so i believe that 20% can be changed

    help ?!

Thank you in advance for your answers,
    Cosmin

Thank you for the detailed response! I think you swayed me! I agree with the fact that this laptop has great staying power and will be viable for the foreseeable future! I have one question though, pardon me if it has not already been discussed, but how is the webcam quality? From some of the reviews I've read, its been reportedly decent.

Is it possible to install XP SP3 on a separate-partition.
I have been trying but run into a error blue screen.
Was hoping to as I have several old serial comms programs that will work under xp and wont with windows 7 64 bit home.

    regards

Try VMLite with XP Mode to run your old software within Windows 7. Select "Ultimate 64-bit" & "English" to download XP Mode. It is basically a Virtual Machine running Windows XP Professional SP3 within Windows 7.

Webcam quality is OK, one thing that makes it really interesting is that it's "optimized for low-light video chatting" and it's actually true.
I thought it's just marketing but in low light scenario this integrated webcam gives better image quality than my Microsoft nx6000 (used to be their top of the line)

I updated the 2.29 driver to remove the PC beep issue. After that i noticed that my microphone which worked fine earlier does not work anymore. Earlier it was so good that it could catch the faint sounds from a meter away.

While chatting, i can see that there is very faint signal of my voice but not enough for people on the other side to hear me clearly.

Has anyone come across this problem? Can someone suggest how to correct this?

Check whether you have the microphone boost up(right click on the volume icon> recording devices> levels> microphone boost).

The thing is I think you should stick with Acer customised drivers for the Realtek soundcard - I may be imagining it but they just sound better. You will have to ignore the beep though.

Frankly I can't hear any difference between what Acer provided and the most recent drivers from Realtek website.

I agree for audio drivers OEMs added customisation either grab the more updated drivers from Acer or from other OEMs. The realtek releases sounded bland to me.

eg. Go Acer site find the drivers for the latest 8943G although you have the lower end 5740G AFAIK all Acer uses Realtek Chips (Rule of thumb larger download size the better)
    Or
Go MSI or (insert any OEM here) find a high end gaming laptop which uses the same audio chip then download and install (Rule of thumb larger download size the better)

Should the boost be zero? I will do as advised. Thanks a lot for it, i will feedback if it worked

I know i should have, but i downgraded for the sake of beep, it really annoyed me, especially when evenings i try to keep quiet before my son goes to sleep. Can you mention what is the latest version from Acer as recommended driver for Realtek if the earlier suggestion does not work?

Hi all. I'm one of the proud owners of Acer 5740G-434G64Mn. But I have a little problem. I bought my notebook preinstalled with linux. After installing Windows 7 x86 I couldn't get Acer ePower Manager to work. And without it - it's a mess. After reading couple of pages on the net i found that I need Acer Empowering Technology to instal the ePower. Tryed all versions from 2.1 , 2.5 and 3.0 but Epower isn't working. Can someone help me ? Thanks a lot.

    Sorry for my english.

1)The new Acer Power Management doesn't run on Empowering framework.
It runs sliently and switches power plan when you disconnect the AC to conserve power either way it is optional as Windows 7/Vista has a very customizable power plans.
It is for lazy people like me who is too lazy to do any power plan personalisation.

Thanks. That throw a little light in the dark. But the problem is that when i choose high performance (on windows 7) and run a game (on battery mode) the CPU and the GPU are not working on maximum. On Dirt2 for example I get 20 AVG fps on battery and 34 fps on AC power (without power plan changes). That's the main thing that worries me.

EDIT: Witch is the last ePower manager that allows manual controls and from where I can get it ?

    hello there everyone!

I am too a proud user of this laptop, everything about it seems excelent to me after 2 weeks of intense usage except for one thing:

I am one of those users that has the stuttering/freezing issue while playing world of warcraft. Since this is a game i really play oftenly i considered more than once returning my laptop...

I wanted to ask you guys (specially those who have/had the same problem as i do) if the quietHDD solution worked out and solved the problem? if not, what have you done to sort this issue the best way possible?

thanks everyone in advance, and cheers!

I use quietHDD and although I think it works, it could be just my mind. I don't really know.

It did stop the clicky sound so I assume it does something. All I do is turn on quietHDD from the winrar; I hope that's what I'm supposed to do =/

Also, my GPU crashes whenever I hit around 850-900mhz on my GPU for the memory clock. I use the AMD GPU Clock Tool. I was playing Battlefield Bad Company 2, and it was at 625/900, and it crashed. Is there any way to help stabilize it?

Edit: And when I read through this thread, it says something about making recovery disks... I didn't know that i was supposed to do that. Should I do it now? And if I should, how do I do it? Do I use the Acer backup manager? Sorry about this stupid question.

I don't have WOW, but on almost every game i was playing (the Witcher, crysis, half life 2, trackmania, Allods Online) it was stuttering every 15-20 secs. I installed and ran QuietHDD and it stopped the stuttering almost completely. If you like the laptop enough, it may just be better for you to get a better HDD.

    Did quietHDD work for you??

Acer provide Version 8 drivers while the latest Intel Rapid Storage uses Version 9.
    Major jump in version numbers.

I don't know what configuration you have and what kind of software you have running in the background...but I (and i think most of the owners here) never had any problems playing my games (so far all half life 2 episodes and portal and timeshift) in high settings. I did not update any drivers except BIOS...I basically run the machine like out of the box. My experience is that most of this software that promises you to speed up anything is bogus and in the worst case slows you PC down even more. If there were anything that would improve the speed or performance...don't you think microsoft or intel or whoever would already include that in their product.
Guess I am also lucky with my HDD...I don't get that clicking noise...maybe it has to do with the preinstalled intel matrix storage utility that is watching over it.

All I'm saying is...you should be able to play half life 2 on high settings for sure without any stuttering or hickups if you did not mess around with your configurations. :)

I owned 2 Acer Aspire 5740Gs and both of them had stuttering problems. My 1st 5740G died from an unstable power adapter and I'm currently using my 2nd 5740G. Anyways, both of my 5740Gs had Western Digital harddrives. However, it seems these problems only occur in Western Digital harddrives from what I have read on this forum. QuietHDD did solve the stuttering problems I had in games like Counter-Strike: Source & Dragon Age: Origins.

Can you check what kind of harddrive you currently have in your 5740G?

If you boost the microphone it should increase the volume and help others hear you. You should get the ...6053 from the Acer website on the 5553G

Try this link if it doesn't work go on their website:

    http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/Audio/Audio_Realtek_6.0.1.6053_W7x64_A.zip?acerid=634090535402740386&Step1=Notebook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire 5553G&OS=721&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_6

The temperatures are OK. You don't even realize how many people would envy us the temperatures like this.
The Timeline X 5820G that I consider a contender for 5740G has the same GPU and after an hour of playing Crysis HD5650 maxes out @83*C while the CPU (Core i5 430M) maxes out @84*C.
Compare it to your 67*C for GPU and 77*C for CPU and you know what a good cooling system Aspire 5740G has.

Haha well I'm really surprised at these temperatures to be honest. My old Toshiba laptop was hot like hell, while idling. Well thanks a lot for the feedback m8! By the way, even tho cpu reached 77*C, the keyboard, touch pad were barely warm, indeed it has a great cooling system.

I had this notebook plugged into a HDMI source, with a SONY 5.1 surround, (not forced 5.1) and there was, no lie, at least 4 channels of different sounds coming out of the speakers when i was playing Saving Private Ryan BLU-RAY(14gb .mkv file) so, i would say via hdmi, yes, it is surround, at least 4 channel....

When i got the notebook, i used skype and aimvideo, and my camera blew away my aunt's MACBOOKPRO camera, and my ex (naked) girlfriend on aim ... and my mom,(HP cam) who was sitting right next to me...

Thanks a lot, this worked for me. With this version, even the beep due to attaching power cable is fixed.

I got a TARGUS dualFAN Chillmat (30$) at bestbuy.. Dropped my temps about 10º-15º all around (GPU/CPU)

I wanted one of these Newegg.com - zalman notebook cooler

But i had a bestbuy giftcard, so a free chillmat trumps a elite chillmat... till this targus one dies, i will use it...

(MY GPU GETS UP TO ABOUT 140º INGAME)

How did you remove the PC beep from this version? I uninstalled my previous Realtek drivers and installed this version, but the PC beep is still there.

Edited: If you installed the 5553G Realtek drivers over the Realtek 2.29 drivers and restarted your
computer. It'll install Microsoft HD Audio drivers instead and not the Realtek drivers. Which, kills the whole point of using Realtek drivers and does not solve the microphone problem.

You need to uninstall Realtek drivers and delete them in "Device Manager" before you install a different Realtek driver.

I agree that the newest Realtek driver fixes the microphone problem, but there is no option to remove the PC beep. So if you want to stick with the 2.29 drivers; increase the microphone volume to 100% and the microphone boost to +30.0 dB. It's not perfect, but people should be able to hear you through the microphone.

Somebody needs to modify the newest Realtek drivers with the PC beep removal option.

Realtek 2.48 drivers: Dolby Home Theater + fully working microphone + annoying PC beep

Realtek 2.29 drivers: No Dolby Home Theater + weaker microphone + PC beep removal option

It's your choice of preference. I had to choose 2.29 because the PC beep would distract my classmates/professor and sometimes I would forget to do Fn + F8 to mute all sounds.

Beep still exists, my son had unplugged it from the adapter.
I had uninstalled the 2.29 and then installed this version 6053.

Sorry for the confusion and wrong excitment
