Thanks for recommending SRS Audio Sandbox anyways. My music plays crystal clear now. I didn't know mp3s can output such quality sounds & I like the 3D sound effects in Counter-Strike: Source.

However, the mic works perfectly with the newest (2.48) Realtek drivers. You can speak from a few feet away and people will hear you clearly. I just want to get rid of the PC Beep.

Eh, I don't really like the beep. I'll stick with SRS :)

However, it'd be nice if there were a way to make those two compatible with each other... or at least fix the mic using SRS. I dunno, I'll have to try experimenting later. I have 12 hours to burn on a flight, might as well try using an hour optimizing the mic lol.

Edit: need some help guys. eRecovery crashes and burns on me, when I click burn a CD. Any solutions?

When i go to open 'ipconfig.exe', it opens for a brief period (not even a second) then closes intantly. This happens every time i go to open it. My acer is running on windows 7 (64bit).
Is anyone experiencing this problem or know how to fix it?
    Cheers

Open the command prompt first. (CMD) then run ipconfig from there.
ipconfig does not have a gui.

You said you have Aspire 7740G and you gave me a link do 1.22 BIOS for Aspire 5740G. Be more cautious when it comes to updating your laptop- that would be the end of it.
I can't tell you what to remove because... I've already removed that and I don't remember but if you post a list of what's installed I may be able to help.
I also disabled some useless Windows services.

    Hi guys,

I´ve just got a really good deal on Ebay in Spain for this laptop (sealed in box):

    i5-430m , 6 GB RAM, 640 GB HDD, HD 5650 and so on for 635€ (I know it´s a lot in dollars...)

The question is: Is it worth it to replace the crappy Atheros wifi card for an Intel 6200?

    Thanks

EDIT: Wow I didn´t know that I registered so long ago...

In the wei the procesor have 6.7 with turbo bost driver installed like the video card , the hdd have 5.8 and ram 5.9. The battery will need to be format or not?

New forum member here. I just received my brand spanking new Acer 5740G and reformatted the HD and installed a clean copy of Windows 7 on it. I updated the drivers but I the two volume buttons on the right side of laptop surface, just below the screen, do not work. Any ideas on what I need to install/set to get them to work?

Try installing the "LaunchManager Application" from the Acer website for the 5740G laptop. If that doesn't work, try installing other drivers.

    Hi everyone!
It´s been a long time since I last visited this eminent forum.. Wife and children sort of got in the way of my interest in computers.
Swede, so sorry if my english has gotten a bit rusty.
    Anyway.. About a week ago I bought a 5740g with an i5 450, HD5650, 4gb DDR3 and 640gb HD and I must say it´s a cracking machine. Very well built. I have a couple of questions, though.
I´ll start with the speakers.. The left one plays treble and upper midrange while the right one plays midrange an at least tries to play bass.. Is this normal och do I have faulty speakers? Sound quality as a whole is kinda...disapointing...
Secondly I have a question about overclocking the gpu. I´ve tried Ati gpu clock tool, and with 650/800mhz instead of the default 550/750 my 3dMark06-score went from 7198p to 7912 and that is a really nice improvement. My problem is that the setting in the tool where I choose to OC only in 3d applications is inactive and it wont autostart either so now I have to open the program and apply the OC settings everytime I want to game and then enter the program once again to remove the OC when I´m done gaming.. I find it to be a bit too much work.. Are there programs that will allow me to have higher clocks when I´m gaming and automatically set those clocks when starting a game, and then go back to default when I stop gaming?? And also start with windows? Not overclocking my HD5650 feels a bit like putting a Porsche on bicycle-wheels but I´m a lazy guy so I want something that can do what I want without the hazzle..
    Suggestions, anyone?
Damn.. Feels good to be back!

Wow! I didn't know you could get the 5740g with 6GB RAM...good deal!
I think the Atheros wifi card is actually not bad...I get better and faster connections than with my old Dell laptop which has an intel wifi card in it.

That worked like a charm. I downloaded all of the drivers and flashed the bios. I totally forgot to check the applications section for downloads. Thanks again. This is my first gaming laptop and so far, I'm thoroughly impressed.

It's a very good laptop , i owerclocked the video card at 750/950 , and in gta iv with everything on very high , just shadows in high because was limited by memory , and all on 100 , anisotropic x16 and everything on , on benchmarck show 23fps , and in game between 15-28fps , and when i owerclocked it at 800/1000 the video driver was stoped when i entered in the game , but it started again in 5 seconds , the max temperature was 74*C , this is only for test video card but with what clock is safety to play?

Atheros is fine, good reception, perfectly stable. I wouldn't replace it unless the replacement card was for free.

BIOS 1.22 is the most recent. You don't need to format the battery but remember to fully discharge it once in a while and then charge it fully (preferably with the notebook switched off) to recalibrate it. The battery will lose capacity anyway but it is important to let the battery chip "know" exactly how much capacity it lost- this way the remaining battery time that Windows displays is going to be accurate.

I'm afraid overclocking it the way you desired is impossible at present. You have to manually set it every time and then reset the default clocks after you've finished (otherwise the PowerPlay won't work)
I can't say anything about the speakers- too subjective- if I don't hear something it doesn't mean it's not there.
Some people like the sound system others not so much- sometimes I suspect there are different types of speakers in different units.

Look for a service manual for Aspire 5738G. It uses the same chassis so it works exactly the same way. It's easy to find and illustrated (can’t be shared here though)

    Hi all,

I'm in Perth Australia and I'm considering buying this laptop.

I saw a display AS5740G-334G64Mn at Smith Electronics but the T key is missing. They were offering $750AUD instead of the original $899AUD.

Can the key be replaced quite easily? The round clear rubber part is still there although they said the key can't be put back on. I don't know if I believe them or not??

Yeah why not. I've skimmed through the whole thread and 'downloads' (probably the most knowledgeable poster in this thread) said he recommends keeping the battery in the notebook all the time as it won't affect the quality of your battery charge.

I was playing mw2 the other day and the computer started to skip around. Now it is doing the same thing while browsing the net. As I am typing this, the I type fine, then it will do nothing. After half a second or so, it will type a bunch all at once.

May I ask a bit of a silly question? The bios you linked to (1.22) on the first post, can I use that on my 5740G-6979? I KNOW the answer is yes, but after a bad flash on my old laptop I am a lil wary. BTW How come the acer updater always says "no new updates" when there are so many available?

Yes you can but if you currently have 1.16 BIOS and no problem with GPU you don't have to. BIOS 1.16 is a must but 1.22 is in essence 1.16 + new video BIOS for ATI & Intel GPU. I'm still using 1.16 as I never had any memory artifacts and that's what 1.22 fixes. When it comes to BIOS I follow the if-it-ain't-broken-don't-fix it rule.

Has anyone installed the Catalyst 10.5? I might be a moron but I tried but 10.4 and 10.5 with no luck, the installation finishes "correctly" but the only thing installed is some LOTR Online crap.

The only drivers that I´m able to install are the ones from the Acer website.

Any help please? I have the 5740G with the HD 5650.

    Thanks

According to the Device Manager is : 8.672.3.0

I gave up trying to install the Catalyst Drivers and went with the Acer ones, these ones are from the Backup Disc.

I tried many times to install the Catalyst 10.5 but nothing happens, it doesn´t even install the CCC, and according to the Installation Wizard everything is installed correctly and obviously that is not true.

Should I use Driver Sweeper before I try to install Catalyst 10.5?

    Thanks

Are you sure that you are using the mobility drivers?
Direct links to 10.5 can be found in the second post of this thread.
Install those and we'll see what happens.

Ok it is confirmed: I am a moron. I was trying to install the desktop drivers instead of the mobility ones.

Now the driver version shown on the device manager is : 8.732.0.0

Just one thing, the device manager doesn´t show the card as "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650" no more, is listed now as "ATI Mobility Radeon 5600/5700 Series", is that normal?

    Thanks for the help.

Yes it's normal- Mobility Radeon HD 5650 and HD 5730 are in essence the same card with different clocks hence the 5600/5700 series.

    Downloads you are a beast!!

Ive decided that im going to buy the 5740 i3, 3gb ram, 320gb hdd for £460. But not the model with 4gb ram and ati 5470 gpu as its £70 more and i dont want to spend that much.

Now, from reading this thread the only faults i know about are the artifacts on the screen but that can be fixed by the bios and driver updates right? And the beep from the power cable being unplugged but that wont bother me.

I dont expect to play crysis but from videos the intel GMA HD can play older games, all id want to play is the sims 3, battlefield 2, San Andreas, Age of empires 3, portal and company of heroes. I should be able to play these on low/medium shouldnt I?

Ive seen a sony model which has the same specs but its £20 more, has battery charge retentions problems and the cpus make high pitched whining noises but its very sexy :p. What are your thoughts on this sony?

Finally, would i be able to reformat windows 7 using the disk off the MS website? Could i enter the serial number on the bottom of the laptop and it would work fine? Could i keep the recovery partition? What drivers would i have to install, just the ones off this thread/acer site? And finally what recovery features does windows 7 have?

I know i have alot of questions but i want to get the right machine, i appreciate your time :)

I assume you are talking about Aspire 5740 with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD Graphics (the one on board of Core i3/i5)
You can check the gaming performance of it here.
Not that good news I'm afraid- while you can expect Sims 3 to run at medium details there's no chance of BF2 BC achieving smooth playback.
As for San Andereas that should run fine at even-more-than-medium details.

Artifacts shouldn't concern you as they were a feature ;) exclusive to HD5650.

As for Windows 7- all drivers you require for a clean install are available on Acer's support site and updated versions of most of these are linked in the second post of the thread. One thing to keep in mind though- some apps are not available for download so before you decide to wipe the factory installed Win 7 (which I see no reason to do frankly) use the Acer eRecovery to burn all four recovery DVDs (three for Win 7 and one for drivers & apps).
The product key from the bottom of the notebook is probably blocked from online activation (or so I heard) but you should find this thread helpful.
Do not delete the recovery partition and remember to burn the backup DVDs before you do anything else!

Last but not least- Sony- from why you wrote it's not very appealing but I can't say much more as you haven't given enough details and model number has not been mentioned.

Thanks alot, i meant Battlefield 2 not bad company, from what you said that should run fine :).

Ill just delete all the bloatware instead of doing a reformat in that case.

Thats the first thing ill do, burn the recovery dvds!!

Im sold now, thanks alot mate!! :D Cant wait until my a levels are over so i can start putting all my stuff over.

EDIT: One last thing, when i update the bios, will i have to install1.16 then 1.22 or can i just install 1.22?

You can skip 1.16 and go straight to 1.22 .

GPU-Z shows 75 Celsius, I think that´s a lot. Anyone has tried higher OC with no artifacts or higher temps?

By the way I tried MSI Afterburner and it won´t let OC the GPU memory over 975 Mhz, probably that was a warning sign.

I don´t have a cooling pad, probably will buy an Aeolus this week.

    Thanks

75*C is not a lot- it's pretty high for this laptop but still very far from unsafe.
I've managed 76*C again today playing GTA IV Liberty City Stories- this is the game that gives me the highest temperatures probably because of all the HDR and post processing in general.
Nothing to worry about- just compare your temps to what other users get in different notebooks.
We've just recently discussed Timeline X 5820TG and its 83*C after an hour of Crysis- and that's the same HD5650 just... not overclocked like yours and mine are.

Ive just spotted an acer 5741, the same spec as the 5740 i wanted a few posts back (i3,3gb ram, 320gb hdd, intel gma hd). Its £450.

    What is the 5741 like?

Looks just like a chassis update to me but it looks alot nicer.

Im sorry for all these questions, im a pain i know :p.

    EDIT:

Ive just noticed the 5741 has a PM55 motherboard compared to the 5740s HM55. What is the difference?

At mine the temperature is the same at gpu with underclock , normal clock or overclock , on idle it is 55-60*C , and at 95-100% load , 70-74*C .
Are normal the idle temperatures or not?
And Downloads , what cooling pad you recomand for this laptop , the Aeolus it's good? but is little expensive.

I don't know what the 5741 is like but the difference between the PM55 and HM55 should be negligible in your case. HM55 is higher end chipset with more options concerning graphics (including switchable) and video out options.
Look for reviews concerning LCD screen quality, cooling system efficiency, how quiet the notebook is etc.

Idle temperatures are within reason- mine are 50-53*C most of the time but that depends on the room temperature.

Your load temps are equal to mine, but mine idles around 45c. Like downloads said, I don't think its dangerous.

BTW: My CPU idles 50-57c. I have it on balanced (processor set at 0 min 70 max)

did you check in your realtek audio control panel if your microphone is enabled? (with a little checkmark in the tab for microphone)

get a dedicated graphics card, dont use the intel onboard stuff... you will be so happy when you can play NEW games.. =)

funny, i cant burn e-recovery disks either, alike many ppl on this thread... interesting..
    :(
