Sorry, but its not. Its a "WD" specific issue. I had 2 i5-520 640gb laptops wit the same isse, and 1 i7 640gb laptop with it aswell.

As for my problem, the whining high pitched sound on the left side (fan air output) any updates? anyone want to tell me if this will pass with usage in time?

    cheers

Hey if you don't like it no one keeps you here- also no one offends you.

Well too bad for WD- I thought they made just one lousy drive but it seems they are more ambitious than that.
I can’t say anything about the high-pitched sound. Mine doesn't emit anything like it.

I'm not retarted but it looks like you are. What does going outside have anything to do with the recording quality of the mic...sheshh. Ill tell you from a non retards perspective. Nothing.

But I can give you an example of why what you said is retarted in the form of a hilarious practical joke.
I'll start by stealing a DNA sample from you, clone you, then raise you as my child.
But in my home I will only keep black and white Tvs and monitors, so when you got to school and get smart enough to talk and socialise (prob around 17) you will be like, "hey dad, can we get a color TV like all the other kids" and I'll be like "Son what the? Are you retarted or what, if you want hyper crystal color then go outside you lamo.
It may take 17 years but it will be worth it just to prove how retarted your statement is, that even an exact clone of you thinks that type of reasoning is stupid.

yes the mic works good, you can hear people, but it is much worse than what I'm used to on my 5920g. It is acceptable but poor by other mic standards. Same for the sound.
If you dont care about such things doesn't mean anyone who does is retarted. Heck this forum is here to discuss such matters. If we all just agree everything is awesome and nothing really matters whats the point of having a forum at all. Why are you even on a tech based forum if you dont care about how well the tech works.

As I said earlier, I was not trying to be offensive at all. I was mearly voicing my opinion on why I didn't agree what he was saying about the laptop were reasnable things to say and why that may the case.
I dont think there is much point to being so bland when it comes to discussing any particular thing. Its almost like having a race and everyone comes 1st no matter how they performed. I get the feeling he was taking a stance that the performance of the discussed aspects like sound mic etc is the same or not discernable.

Also I think these forums are great. Easily the best notebook and computer based forums on the net. I would not leave just becasue there are people I disagree with...

If you ask the 5 other people who have seen my laptop run they will say mine doesnt emitt anything like that as well, but they are wrong cos I can hear it does. Some people are not able to hear the sound because it is too high in frequency. So yours may be doing it as well. But it may not as well.

OK. I think now it's my time to ask everyone to leave it as it is.
No more joking, mocking insulting and so on.
It would be nice if we could be strictly professional which has not been the case for a few posts.
Difference of opinion it was and let it be that way.

My kind? Unless you mean the kind who makes rational observations of things and doesnt become a fanboi of particular laptops and get offended when they are not praised, you should say what that kind is? Also I'd like to see you show which of my posts are inappropriately petty and ignorant and why. I think most of what I have said has been very fair.

This is my first post here...

I've to say THANK U VERY MUCH to "downloads" for organizing this thread...

    So, i have 5570G model...i5 with ATI 5650...

I'm from india, so there is no inbuilt 3G....

After researching a lot i got NOVATEL 850D 3G pci express card...

Installed it thankfully no problems with bios or windows...

But later i noticed that the 3g modem is on USB 1.1 bus as shown from everest...even though connected to mini pci express....

does any body here tried it...or if any body have bought this laptop with 3G...can u check ??? i don't have the 3G connecton yet...waiting for it...

but i connected a normal GPRS sim card and the modem is reporting 229kbps bandwidth...

    any inputs from u...

Then just to check if the card is using USB bus..i used plaster and covered the short usb pin board and connected it even it says the modem is on USB 1.1

I think it will be hard to find a accurate answer for that. To date your the only other person that has noticed it. To be honest I was very surprised I ran across someone else who did that easily on the 1st day i bought it.
I did not even bring it up here and look how much I bagged the 5740 about other stuff. Reason being its a very subjective issue.

It may or may not go away. I notice mine is intermittent. I have heard similar noises before on electric motors fans and pumps and irt usually does not go away until the part is replaced or serviced. Kind of bad news for a laptop thats brand new, lol. I don't know what to make of it. Usually these things happen with wear and tear. Maybe after a few years when things start to get clogged with dust and oil and other crap it will decide to shut up but for now looks like we are stuck with it. You cab try calling acer about it but you may just get the laptop back the same as you sent it just a little worse for wear.

I also had the whining high pitched sound on my 2nd 5740G laptop (on the left side where the fan output is). However, after a week and a half of using it; the whining high pitched sound sort of disappeared. Strange indeed..

Yes, I have seen this before, but I haven't really cared for it due to it's weight and it's fair Newegg reviews. But thank you for the suggestion!
Edit: the price at that link is awesome though...

It's not dangerous but if you continue getting it you should investigate what's causing it. A lot of times this happens after you install a new driver...
If you get the error again, write down the error or stop code for further troubleshooting. Also, try to roll back the latest driver you've installed before you got the error.

! Now this one is sold out, which JR.com says means "we have no more and we do not expect any more from the manufacturer."

And again, it doesn't look like anyone else is selling this model.

What do the computer gods have against me?

What am I supposed to do now?

Hey guys, hope you can help me out with this resolution issue. Thought I should post in here first before maybe later creating a thread for my issue.

Basically, I have an Acer X233H 23" monitor, and a new Acer Aspire 5740G laptop (Windows 7, [email protected], Radeon HD5650), connected via VGA. 1920x1080 is of course what I'm after. The maximum resolution I can get at the moment is 1600x1200 which just isn't good enough. I require a higher resolution for work purposes.

GPU drivers are up to date, Intel VGA driver I came across won't install (I don't think this is the problem), and I created custom profiles/drivers for the monitor itself via Powerstrip.

Powerstrip at least seemed to have allowed me (via the aforementioned method) to configure the resolution slider to let me move it up to 1920x1080, but it defaults back to 1600x1200 regardless if I try to change it. Doesn't matter if I change the res via Windows 7's display setting, via Catalyst Control, or via Powerstrip itself. Always happens.

    Any ideas?

I'm not afraid to start getting technical, in terms of editing things, using old drivers etc.

I ordered this model from there a at 2 am this morning. maybe I got the last one? Sorry bro, I know how that feels. The reason I ordered it is because I went to order an hp with a coupon. the coupon went through but I forgot my paypal password. 5 minutes later when I finally got into my paypal account I went to hit the order button and the price changed. I literally missed that deal by minutes. So, I quickly went to rg because I knew they were the only one who had this model and it said supply limited. Small world huh.
I know I know, "cool story bro". ;) I'm sure something similar will pop up sooner than later for ya. Good luck.

Well, I can still hear it if I put my ears very close to the fan output, but it is no longer audible (loud as before) with normal usage. I was using it for 3D games like Dragon Age: Origins and Counter Strike: Source.

It's the same one I linked in the update post in March but still Acer and driver updates? Something has to be seriously wrong with the old one.

The only problem is that if the BT module is to be placed in the same spot as in the 5738G that uses the same chassis you need to basically disassemble the whole notebook. Consult 5738G service manual.

I found out an annoying problem. When I use default Win7 drivers for sound the sound coming out from the speakers are higher @ 100% but when I use Realtek drivers the sound level @ 100% goes down considerably. Anybody else having such problem.

I want to keep the Realtek drivers as it have a lot of useful enhancements.
    Any remedy for me.

Did you install the genuine Realteks from their website or Acer customised. I haven't heard the Microsoft ones but do try the latest on the Acer web(they may fix the volume issue). And tells us how it went.

Well, I got tired of the Atheros card dropping the wi-fi connection with no reason at all and decided to buy an Intel 6200, I will post impressions once I get it.

I also bought an internal Bluetooth 2.1+EDR dongle for a few € on Ebay, so I guess I will gut the laptop in a few days. Any recommendations on Bluetooth Mice?

If I screw the BT installation at least the laptop was a gift...

The default Atheros card is a piece of crap IMO; no dual band, no wireless management utility other than WZC, drops connection quite often, etc...

Intel 6200 has dual band plus a lot more range and management options. Plus it does 300 Mbps, whereas the Atheros says that it does 300 Mbps but it doesn't really.

I´m gonna sell the Atheros card to minimize the cost of the Intel.

I want to stick with properly working drivers for my Laptop. In my past experience I have rarely seen any major gain while updating drivers, on the other hand incompatibilities increases or some features stops working latest example being the light of my Wifi indicator remains on (does not blink) whether connected or not after updating them to 8.0.0.279.

The only exception is Graphics Card drivers.

Downloaded from Intel, I get same error while installing these drivers as well.
