BTW: I have a 6395 with the 320gb hdd, 520m and 5650.

 

What is wrong with this laptop , when i play 1 hour and 20 minutes on battery the max temperature was 63*C gpu and 65* cpu and when i pluged in the AC , the temperature rised again at 74*c gpu and 72*cpu , was no frame drops on battery or something ,it is better to play on battery on this laptop. It is no way to play at this temps on AC?

 

I think it has something to do with lowering the clock speed on the GPU and Ram speed on the HD 5650 when it is on battery power. That is why the temperature is lower on battery. ATI PowerPlay? I could be wrong though.

 

Playing on battery.. Nice way to decrease its lifetime.

 

No ,are exactly some clock , the game run identical like when the AC is pluged in , i think is a transformer near the cpu and gpu to limit the voltage entering in the battery or something , the cpu was at 2.26ghz and gpu 550/750 , nothing changed , it is from voltage , the battery has only 10.8v , when the AC has 19v.
But it is a way to have a temperature like on battery when the ac is pluged in?

Update: Yes it is from Powerplay but is awsome , if you play games which not need by the full gpu potential you can go in powerplay and set maximize battery life on AC and the temperature decreases with ~11* in full load and the cpu teperature decreases too , probably because the cpu and gpu have same cooling sistem , and you can play some games on high , this summer i set the powerplay on maximize battery , the temperature don't rise upper than 65 gpu and gpu in full load.
I created one new power plan ''high video performance'' only this with maximize performance , and when i want to play big games i activate this.

 

You kind of lost me a bit here. There's no way a laptop that can have more features and capabilities than a desktop PC! (Unless you're comparing a budget desktop with a £1500+ laptop). I have a 5740G 434G50Bn and I like it so far. It has a Blu-ray drive, Bluetooth, ATI 5650 card, i5 processor and my wireless card works fine! So it's a matter of getting the right model for your needs. The only thing I can complain about right now is that there's no hotkey for hibernate (though you can create your own with Windows 7) and the multi-gesture touchpad is a little strict on the finger positioning to make it work correctly and the fact that the HDD is only 5400RPM....

 

This laptop is impossible to find. Hopefully they drop another variation soon.

 

"Maximize battery" will underclock ati clocks to 300/300, that's why your temps are low..

We have wireless connection between 2 house. House1 - WRT54G router, House2 WAP54G accesspoint. If I plug my old pc to the WAP54G I get about 2500 kbyte/sec rate, however with Acer 5740G notebook the rate is only about 1650 kbyte/sec. The wifi signal is very good (thanks for the outdoor antennas). I've tried the default LAN NIC driver for this notebook and tried the latest one also. I configured with different modes like 100 mb full duplex/ auto sense etc. There is no real difference. Is this because of win7? (XP SP3 is runnining on other PC - at the side of the WRT54G router), Or could it be because of the Gigagit Ethernet (might not be fully compatible with 10/100 wifi adapters).
Otherwise the link speed between my wired PC (through a switch) and my notebook is only 8300 Kbyte/sec. It should be about 9500 Kbyte/sec also.

 

Yes , the clocks decrease at 300 but in furmark don't show that , but in some games like Fuel , the performance don't decrease.

I´m playing Mass Effect 2 with all ON except Dynamic Shadows, 2x AA and 16x AF and it´s showing 43 fps, if I turn off the AF I get around 60 fps stable.

To be honest I don´t see a huge difference between the AF ON/OFF, so I think I might get a pair of bionic eyes for Xmas. Maybe I don't see the difference because I always game on consoles.

EDIT: Not even close, with the same specs as you I only get 8768 points. I´m running Catalyst 10.6 and W7 Home Premium 64. Well I guess it's back to the drawing board.

 

I have catalyst 10.6 but i have w7 ultimate.
It is safe to play longer with 780/980? the temperature don't rise up than 80*C but i think overclock shorten the video card life , and i want to keep this laptop more than 3 years ,is my first laptop.
And i see others laptops with the temps ~88*C without OC.
This OC will shorten the GPU life?

If i rise memory up to 980 in 3d appear artefacts , you are lucky.

Wow.. how come your temps are so low? You using cooler?

 

The gpu temps in 3dmark don't get so highter , but in games like gta iv i have 81*C with 680/980. I don't have a cooler stand.

 

How do you guys clean fan/cooler in those new Acer laptops, if you unscrew upgrade panel you have only access to memory and hdd not the cooling system like in other laptops?



So I would like to ask how you clean them? Any photos are welcome .

 

I've just installed the latest Realtek drivers from the Acer website (5943G ones) and there is a PC beep remove option and they seem loud enough have not tried the microphone yet. If any one else tries them do share your experience.
EDIT: The microphone levels seem OK there is a single pop when powering on probably due to higher volume levels.
PS: downloads did you do your Catalyst 10.6 review yet?

Downloads - I had some spare time and tried installing newer Realtek drivers version R2.41 and it has the PC beep removal option. Also, it has the Dolby tab with Audio Enhancer & Surround Sound disabled by default. So remember to turn those options on.

Also, the microphone is working 100%. Turn up volume 100% and Microphone Boost to +30.0 dB and you could be heard 5 feet away.

There is also no popping or cracking sound when you start up the computer.

I will update the PC Beep removal page you linked to before.

Yeah I did the usual routine except for Heaven Benchmark which seems unstable all the time (since v2.1 came out) so I ditched it.
Unfortunately I've deleted the screenshots so you'll have to believe me on it. (or request screenshots- in which case I will re-test)

Cats 10.6 have a lot of new features and improvements so it's worth to install them- see release notes for details.

Note: GTA IV Liberty City Stories benchmarked is still the original unpatched version- I haven't bothered with the patch as it would invalidate any comparisons.

Note 2: I've downloaded Sniper Ghost Warrior demo (1.4GB- here) to see how it would perform and to my surprise it run at some 35fps in 1366x768 and all settings on high. It looks like a very interesting game and apparently it's gonna run smoothly on an OCed 5740G. To be completely honest I was very busy at that time so I spent only few minutes playing the demo and I quickly got killed as a result of watching how it looks and fps shown by FRAPS so don't quote me on that- but it seems it's gonna be perfectly playable.

Aspire 5740G is going to be faster than 5745G in everything but Left for Dead (which runs better on nVidia hardware for some reason- some 60fps for ATI and 70fps for nVidia)
According to Acer specs 5745G is available with Intel Core i7-620M

You may or may not have to pay customs duty- depends on your local law.
As for the prices- Aspire 5740G seems still unbeaten when it comes to power to price ratio. TimelineX 5820G comes second with very similar performance and better battery life but a bit higher price and worse cooling system.
If you intend to buy 5740G do it now as it may become unavailable soon- gemstone series is getting gradually phased out.

 

I had the same drivers but took them off because I noticed that my speaks began to sound distorted at higher volumes and stayed like that after I removed the driver. I think that loud pop may have caused some damage to the speakers.

Edited: You can install up to version R2.43. Versions R2.44 - R2.46 will have that loud cracking popping sound when you start Windows 7. I haven't had time to test versions R2.47 and above, but I assume that they will also have that loud cracking popping sound. Also, the PC Beep volume control disappears somewhere between versions R2.44 - R2.49.

 

I think I have the same issue with WD 640GB, altough I haven't tested it with games. But the most obvious thing is that without QuietHDD it makes annoying kind of clicking sounds several times per minute. And on top of that, it seems to change rpm all the time, at least it sounds like it.

 

Actually, surround sound is better left disabled, because it makes the quality worse.

 

It depends on audio you listen to- sometimes it improves it sometimes it makes dialogues in movies harder to hear.

Right guys my laptop is nearly here. Heres what im going to do:

Make recovery cds
Make restore point
Update all drivers
Update windows


What drivers do i need to ati 5470? 10.6? What about all this extra stuff like hydravision?

What about soundcard? The ones off acer? realtek site? Or the beep free ones? Or do i want the dolby features that id miss out?

Finally what should i expect with my 5470? ATM all i want to play is Battlefield 2,sims 3 cod1 gta age of empires (the 2005 pc game) on my 1650 res monitor all on high,

and newer games on the laptops screen cos they wont run as well on the bigger screen will they.

Yep- it was me. Radeons HD5xxx have their own audio chips for HDMI sound (well sort of ) made by Realtek. So there are two sources of audio drivers for HDMI- either Realtek or ATI. At present the driver available from Realtek website (called ATI HDMI Audio Device) is more recent than what ATI offers.

I don't think they will enable it on this laptop because they offer it on the more expensive models and don't wanna give this feature to the inexpensive ones...but would be cool if they would do it.

back once again... okay this heating issue on my laptop is getting kinda out of hand now.... basically any game (only tested with two so far, world of warcraft and tf2) will cause the cpu temps on my lappy to jump form 55-60 (idle temps) to (85-90). I tried running prime95 just as a stress test just to see if anything is wrong but after like 10 or so minutes of running the laptop temps had jumped to 92!!!! yes i know a cooling pad would solve this issue relatively quickly but money is kind of an issue at this point so im propping up the laptop and making sure the vents are clear... but from my limited knowledge of computers this behavior isnt exactly normal. The cpu on this model is the i5 520m and the 5650 radeon gfx card

 

This is the best thread on the web regarding Acer 5740G. I also own one and got it for 44000 INR but mine comes with a Hitachi 500gb HDD and a broadcom bluetooth. Do I still need to use quiethdd to disable the APM?
I have also heard that there are certain variants of 5740G that have a 3G Huawei module. Does anybody here own it?
There are Realtek HD audio driver (ATI HDMI also) 2.49 available for download at the realtek site. Should I download and install them. Personally I don't mind that much about the beep sound. Instead I like it but its loud also and I want to lower its volume. Is there no way other than installing 2.43. Doesn't 2.49 solves all those issues like beep sound, microphone issue and dolby features. Plz let me know.

Buddy, your temps are really very high. Whats your ambient room temperature?
Are you putting the laptop on bed or pillow. If yes, then try to put it on a clean flat surface and then see the temps.
My temps are:
GPU: 42-44 C (idle) 65-72 C (while playing Assassin Creed 2)
CPU: 46-49 C (idle-core1) 37-41 C (idle-core2) (I think my core2 has a stuck sensor coz the difference b/w the two cores is always b/w 7-12 C)

 

Nope, the PC Beep volume control is disabled in version 2.49. There is no PC Beep volume control to disable or lower the volume of the PC Beep. I tested all previous versions and 2.43 is the last Realtek driver to contain all the functions, while having the PC Beep volume control. Other versions could have a loud, cracking pop sound that could damage the laptop speakers.

Having updated drivers doesn't always mean it will function the best and it could contain new bugs. That is why there is always a newer version for drivers.

You lose nothing installing Realtek 2.43 drivers. Everything works like it is supposed to.

HDMI 2.49 driver is the most recent and it's not related to audio driver so you should install if even if you choose to install 2.43

EDIT: You don't need to disable APM for Hitachi drive

You make it sound like you know what changes have been implemented since 2.43 by saying "you lose nothing". Realtek release notes are vague so you lose whatever changes have been done for 6 driver releases and but can be related to many games and audio applications not only Dolby tab or sound level.
Whoever minds the beep should stick to 2.43 but people who don't care should go to the most recent version (unless it's known to cause problems)

 

I installed ver 2.41 and 2.43 Realtek drivers. I cannot find the option to disable PC Beep. Can some one point to the exact option.

 

Control Panel/ Sound/Speakers- properties and levels tab in there. It should be visible there.

CoreTemp has a nice Win 7 gadget and allows you to monitor CPU temps.
Just make sure it shows the same temps as RealTemp and you know you are all right.

 

yeah im playing on a flat surface(but its wood)....as ive said right now im propping it up so as to give the vent some nice breathing room... however the temps are still a tad high .... ive said this in previous posts but i live in Jamaica ... and its summer so everything is gonna be kinda warm... i have no real way of checking my ambient temp though. the propping up thing was working fine kept the temps at its highest as 85 but last night all of a sudden that wasnt the case anymore... thing is the comp cools right back down once you quit the game..help?

is it normal for games like crysis ? i am playing crysis warhead at gamer settings (high) and some settings at mainstream (med) .

is anything wrong ? i am playing it on a wooden table .

 

I remember you've already posted about this. Your temps in Prime95 are actually quite good considering how hot it must be in Jamaica.
Weather forecast shows some 31*C on Jamaica today while my room temperature is only 23*C so your temps are not surprising.
Cooling pad might not help as it would use the same hot air- just more of it but that fact alone my help if you choose a cooling pad that blows air into notebook's vent- otherwise it makes no sense.

Everything all right. I got up to 76*C max but 80*C is still good.
