    One more thing:
I think you said that everyone who plays games on the laptop should Overclock the Video Card. Now when it comes to my mind, it appears that indeed my Gamecard needs some speed to load faster the textures. Could that be the reason for this "slower" loading of scenery?
It appears that the more demanding the game, the more visible these "hiccups" appear.

    So,my O-clock questions:
    What program should i download?
How to go through the overclockng procedure?
Any unwanted side effects that may occur?
Will my cooling system be able to take it?
And last but not least-have you overclocked your video card as well?If you have, sharing the info would pretty much answer it all :)
Also, should i Download that bios you were telling me about?
    Thanks.

Hello guys, i'm still new and i was going to buy 5745g, but then i saw that 5740g has more powerful GPU. was reading ~60 pages and i made my point of view, the thing i'm worrying is that some people are having "artifak" problem (or h/e its called) anyone know what is causing it and solutions? and about fan whining, is it often problem and any solutions for it? Does it have multitouchpad like its in 5745g? and the last question, i have 5.1 speakers connected to my desktop PC and i'm wondering if i'll be able to connect them to laptop?

1- i think that artifacts are fixed with bios 1.22...
2- i never had any problem with my fans or noises, but a few people had, :p i own a 5740g i7 version
    3- yes multitouchpad :p

Puhpuhan4o, i think that you´ll find all information about overclok on this topic :p check the first thread...and only to answer one question, yes its safe...everytime i play wow i overclock my gpu(660 core, 900 memory) all maximum settings, aa 8x, only shadows at 90%! 35-40 fps on dalaran bank, and my temps are absolutely safe!

Have you noticed any of these stutters i mentioned about?
I don't know really if I am being chased by paranoia or smth.
But just Num Lock in any region and tell me: Do you feel at points as if the mere game Loads? the Jumps are minor, might not be noticed unless looked for (i think)-please, test it for me and tell me. They usually appear when something has to load the upcoming terrain.

    Hi everyone.

I've had my 5740G-6979 for a few months now. I've sold my desktop because this laptop is powerful enough for all my games so I felt I didnt need to have 2 computers anymore. I have run into a few problems though.

    1. AMD GPU Clock Tool doesnt recognize my gpu when I try to run it. Running catalyst 10.6 drivers.

    2. Edit: Freezing issue has been resolved, but WoW isn't quite running as well as it should be with this hardware. I'm getting as low at 20 fps in 25 man raids. Would the answer be to upgrade from 4GB of ram to 8GB?

    3. Every time I run Modern Warfare 2 the game tells me that my computer has changed and it resets my video settings to default. I believe this is happening because the game is detecting Turbo Boost after I run it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    2. 20 fps in 25 raid for WoW Wotlk is great, don't worry...
    i had 5-6 on my desktop,and i know people who raided with 1 o_O

    BUT

have you noticed a game slows from time to time-this appears only when going to a certain direction:Numlocking i mean.
When the game loads the terrain and textures, does it stutter for a moment or so? Interesting enough, instead of a fps drop you would get a FPS increase (to 65), as if the game compensates...

    downloads,
when you told me to update, you advised me to update the network and realtek drivers prio.

Do you think that realtek can indeed slow the texture/terrain load?(because I am now thinking that).
It must be a driver issue.
Also, couldn't find a link for this Audio update on 2nd post, i'd be grateful if you'd share a link :)

P.S. Would be even more grateful if you read my several posts, i think i wrote something about the eventual cause of this slowload problemo.
BTW, on dx9 Far Cry 2 runs great, without this thing i'm talking about.
on dx10, i have the issue even if i nerf my graphics to the ground.

My desktop had a Core 2 Duo and an hd5770 and I was getting 50 fps+ in 25 man raids with 8 GB of ram. If I were to upgrade to 8 GB my specs would be nearly the same, so 20 fps is fairly unacceptable on this hardware.

@omgzilla85 - you have shadows and shaders at low?
and moving to 8gbs of ram won't help unless you are multi tasking that is

Anyone else have a problem with the HDMI output? Mine was okay at first, but now when I try to connect to my Toshiba LCD tv nothing happens. Do I need to get a shorter cable or something?

downloads, when I connect my laptop with the PSU, it loads till the battery is 100% charged.
Then it should drop till 95% and start charging again but this doesn't happen. Instead its stays constantly 100%.

    Is this fixable?

By "should" I meant not overclocking is a waste of GPU potential. AMD GPU Clock Tool is linked in the first post of the thread- you need to manually set the frequencies an use "set clocks" button for gaming but after you've finished you need to use "restore default clocks" button otherwise GPU won't underclock on its own. Cooling system is good enough so it's not a problem- you have to find your max clocks values on your own as they differ but 650MHz Core and 800MHz Memory (default clocks for HD5730 are pretty much guaranteed to work)

It's unlikely that Realtek drivers cause problems but it is still possible. The most recent ones are here

It's not fixable because nothing is wrong. It's not meant to immediately discharge back to 95% and start charging again. If it did your battery wouldn't even last 2 months. Battery will lose some of its charge on its own and in the end (after a week or two) will get to 95% or below and only start recharging then.
It works exactly opposite of how you think it does- battery is protected by not being constantly recharged not the other way around. Your battery is fine.

Also, I just ran 3DMark06 v120 and here are my scores on stock clock speeds (since the Clock Tool won't work for me)

An addition to overclocking the GPU, you can try sets to maximum performance in PowerPlay setting or disabled it completely.

Thats what I installed and it wasn't working from the desktop shortcut for some reason. I reinstalled the same version without uninstalling it and it worked from the start menu but not from the desktop. Don't really know what was going on but its working now so I'm happy.

So far I've gotten 680 Mhz on the engine and 950 on the memory without any error during the benchmark. Scored 8670 on my last run. Still going to try to get it a bit higher.

One more question. Is it ok to disable PowerPlay and leave the gpu overclocked? My laptop is always in an air conditioned room when used for gaming, and my CPU temps never go over 65c.

I wouldn't leave it OCed- no reason to keep it any more warm that it has to be plus your clocks will reset to default when you restart your notebook and possibly after you've hibernated it too (although I'm not sure of the latter). But that’s up to you to decide.
Another thing- don't believe stability testing done by 3DMark06- it's not intensive enough. I found out that the best way for me was to use GTA IV- it gets GPU hotter- so all in all frequencies that are perfectly stable in 3DMark06 may cause GPU to hang in GTA IV.

The only way I know of is through hdmi. the coaxial plug is only 2 channel.

 65c even while gaming? What do you measure that with and what is the room temp?

That is amazing. I hit 83 and 88c core temps running the 3dmark 06 (scored 7277).

I use hwinfo32 and my room temps are 23-26c.

Sorry again for being so annoying, but i have this asking.
The link that should lead me to the Overclock page showed "Overclocking program for Ati 5870"?
Should it be like that, or is it just the same program that overclocks the ati cards?

Also, as this is going to be my first overclock, what EXACTLY should i change. I would appreciate if you would also type the numbers that are going to change, f.e:
    650-900
    450-800 or smth.

    Thank you Very much! :)

The app has been released for 5870 but also works for other HD5xxx series cards.
Assuming you have a HD5650 try 650MHz core 850MHz memory first and if it’s perfectly stable try adding a bit to the core (+10MHz) and hopefully more to the memory (900MHz-1000MHz is what you might hope for the memory)
    What settings?

    Hi there!

I have a question: I want to format the computer and partitionate the disk as I need, but I want to keep the recovery partition (after all, what is 10Gb in a 640Gb disk?? :)).

My question is, after I format and install everything as I want, can I still access the recovery partition, by the Fn+f10 keys combo (I think it's these...)?

I'm asking this because the notebook didn't come with any cd/dvd, and that partition is the only place where is the original software.

    Thanks ;)

In windows7 you don't need to format the drive anymore in order to repartition. You can just repartition the drive from the disk management and don't need to reinstall anything ...check on google for more detailed instructions, but it's very simple and easy and you won't loose the recovery partition.

    I didn't knew that, thanks!

But I really need to format the notebook, I need windows and linux installed and I don't want all that time limited software that come with the default installation.

If I make a clean install, without touching the recovery partition, will I still be able to access it? I need to know so I can avoid any warranty problems that may appear (I hope not...)

    Thanks

You probably can but you should burn recovery DVDs anyway. The laptop doesn't come with recovery DVDs because you have to burn them yourself- 3 are needed for system backup and an additional one for drivers and apps.
Use Acer eRecovery Management for that.

Well, seems to me that I got a dead hard drive, but just asking to make sure...

I got the laptop a couple of weeks ago, with the 640GB HDD. It came with some linux so I repartitioned the hard drive and installed Windows 7. A couple of days ago after some windows update installed after shutting down the computer, booting was taking very long, and once in windows, most of the apps wouldn't open, they would give some page error or something on the lines. I decided that it must've been a one time something-goes-wrong thing and reformatted and reinstalled everything a couple of days ago, and 15 mins ago a Windows update restarted the computer again, and it wouldn't go into Windows, so I restarted, then chkdsk came up. It has since stayed at 3 % and going through segments 58453 (i know they dont mean anything but whatever) - saying "File record segment XXXXX is unreadable.

I will leave this at work to finish overnight sice it doesn't seem to be planning to pick up the pace. First, can anyone confirm this is a hardware problem for sure, and if so, does the warranty cover this or am I going to have to shell out some more hard earned cash for what will probably be a smaller hard drive?

    Thanks in advance!

Based on your story, looks like the HDD is faulty. You already format it but the problem still exist. Since it cannot works as it should be, for sure this is under warranty. You should be able to get the HDD replaced, free of charge.

You can try to troubleshoot this problem by formatting the HDD a couple of time just to make sure & reinstall windows again. Turned OFF system restore & do windows update again. See if the problem still exist.

just wanted to drop a reply and say a big thanks to Downloads and the other contributors in this thread, was very helpful for me in researching a laptop purchase, especially knowing I can look here for easy notes on some initial driver updates etc. I ordered a 5740G 434G50 :)

Thanks, and look forward to using this thread to help keep up to date.

    hi all,
    let me introduce myself,
Name is Ankit Rana, m from india.
I recently bought this amazing laptop "ASPIRE 5740G" and no doubt this is the best bet for the price...
But i have been facing a few probs..i might be asking them again but cant read all 154 pages of discussion before asking...sory for that...plz dnt mind

1.. I need to update my display drivers.. so is it necessary to uninstall previous drivers before installing new one or should i overwrite it with new drivers...?

The only thing I can suggest is to update drivers (especially video, audio and Wi-Fi) install QuietHDD and disable APM (only if you have a Western Digital drive), and use 1.0.0.4 patch for GTA- not the latest one as it makes performance worse.

AMD GPU Clock Tool is linked in the first post of the thread- you need to manually set the frequencies an use "set clocks" button for gaming but after you've finished you need to use "restore default clocks" button otherwise GPU won't underclock on its own. Cooling system is good enough so it's not a problem- you have to find your max clocks values on your own as they differ but 650MHz Core and 800MHz Memory (default clocks for HD5730 are pretty much guaranteed to work). Memory is quite likely to work @900MHz or even higher, core should be able to go up to 670MHz or even 700Mhz if you are lucky. (this part of post is essentially quoting myself ;) )

Install on top of the ones you already have- uninstalling the old ones is not needed.

hello, i have a problem. in fact everything was fine, then i used a driver update software (shame on me).. dont know why .. everything was fine.. anyway.. now i cant watch a movie properly. i use vlc or bs player, in both of them when i raised or lowered sound, image stalled for about 2 seconds. now image goes blank for about 2 seconds. (sound is fine at that moment, also another note: when i raise the sound, there appears 2 volume indicaters in bs player, only one is changing)

i thought the problem hd 5650 driver so i updated it to 5600/5700 series v 8.741.0.0

    other related maybe:
ati high definition audio device version 7.11.0.7703
    high definition audio version 6.1.7600.16385

i think that software updated some intel chip drivers. what should i do?

edit: i looked now on ubuntu: ubuntu doesnt stall or blacken image while changing volume but it makes all image full of squares for a second..

Both audio drivers- for HDMI and the ordinary one are different from what I use- meaning the most recent versions available from Realtek.
Download and update both before you proceed any farther.

It may be solved but "high definition audio version 6.1.7600.16385" looks like Windows standard driver which leaves you without Dolby Home Theatre features of Realtek driver so I'd recommend using Realtek driver instead of generic for HD Audio chip too.

Yes these are both OK- the most recent versions and no known problems with 5740G for either.
