Wrong , i've tested this and i've found out that with stress program Athoros or something ( it has a GO in the interface ) my cpu goes up to 72. After 30 minutes and no cooling pad i got angry and added 6 movies from different player and each 720p . The cpu got up to ~85% and temperature 83C and RAM also .
Also i've tested my battey and the max with some browsing is up to 2 hours and 21 minutes ( as already posted ).
Now question . Do i have to do anything else beside exiting all not needed process to update my bios ? And which version should i download , 1.16 or 1.22 ?
Another question . Does anyone has a picture of how the laptop looks inside ? The best i did was checking out the HDD ( 640GB 5400 rpm ) and my ram .
Last question ( i hope it is rellevant to this topic ) . Is there any shop which can ship to me ( Israel , Ashdod ) 12 cell 8800 mAh battery for my aspire 5740g 434G? I tried from ebay.com but they had some problem and canceled it . :( And how long will the laptop last with that kind of battery ?

I don't feel like I'm wrong ;)- I was off by 3*C and it's warmer in Israel than where I live but my point was not to give an exact temperature but rather what is a reasonable max to expect from this notebook. Other thing I mentioned- these temps are only achievable in stress tests not in real life conditions.

As for BIOS go straight for 1.22 and switch off AV and firewall software. Also make sure the battery is inserted and fully loaded.

Don't buy the 8800mAh battery- it's BS- I've explained why here

Unfortunately I haven't seen any detailed photos of the interior but depending on what are you looking for service manual for Aspire 5730G which is available on the net may help you (5730G uses the same chassis)

As i said , i did the stress test and added the players and then i got that high Temperature.
Another question , what exactly i can remove to cleanup my laptop from dust . I won't wait 6 months or 1 year or until it burns to do this . I think because of my cooling pad it is getting dusty faster than usual . Every week i am doing an outside clean because i see some dust on it .

Cleaning is not easy to do because unlike in some notebooks i.e. Aspire 6920G removing the bottom hatch does not give you access to the fan and radiators.
So the only sensible way is to use a gas duster (canned air) to clean the inlet and exhaust as much as possible before the dust settles down for good between the "leafs" of the radiator. I do it every week or two.
More thorough cleaning would require you to dismantle the notebook almost fully- look at the service manual for 5738G- there's a step by step guide with photos.

I'll look at it right now .
Btw i flashed for nothing . I already had bios v1.22.
I see many people talk about finger prints and this model but could not find it . Does this thing exist or not on this model ?

I never got fast 78*C on the GPU (670/900) but I've also never played a game with a room temperature of 31*C
One hell of a cooling system :)

I saw yesterday some topic about danger temperatures but can't find it again.
    I remember that :
    CPU: 90-105?
    GPU:105
    hdd:65
are temperatures that beyond them you will get perma damage on your computer , if the system do not restart it self before. ( Which won't happen because the system will restart or shutdown it self)

Usually, manufacturer implement safety mechanism to protect our computer from overheating. It depends on how they wrote the BIOS actually but usually first step is it will try to throttle down the CPU/GPU speed in attempt to lower down the temperature. The last step, if the first step failed to lower down the temperature (which is unlikely but if it does, something is going wrong with your computer), it will turned OFF the computer immediately. You can test this by running the GPU-Z in the background & set it to log the temperature. Play a game for 1 to 2 hour to get actual reading. Open the log file to read the recorded temperature. If the recorded temperature in this pattern (values are just an example); 83, 85, 84, 83, 85, 83; this means your computer BIOS is working wonderfully in containing the GPU temperature. BTW, always use cooling pad when playing games. A combination of blower & cooling pad would be great in supplying optimum air flow. :D

The maximum temperature will be depend on the design. Check with Intel website for maximum CPU temperature. Some processor have TjMAX value which is the maximum safe CPU temperature.

i'm sorry but i can't go thru all 167 pages of this thread (i'm' only upto page 60!)

but what if u use the timelinex 5820TG gfx drivers since that has a 5650 and intel gma?

another related question, the timelinex 5820TG does not have an MXM card just as the 5740G does not right?

Neither 5740G nor 5820TG are MXM for all I know.
As for switchable graphics- drivers do not change anything- it's (probably) disabled and hidden in BIOS so the second video device is not available and there's nothing to install drivers for.

    ahh that's a shame

ahh yes i finally finished this entire thread and read about how the BIOS has to be modded.. what about using the 5820TG's BIOS on the 5740G? LOL jk

i have a couple of questions that spring to mind though:

how sure are you that the s/p-dif out is electrical and not optical? the s/p-dif optical out on my (now dead - laptop dropped from bed, power jack broke) MSI EX625 (great value laptop!) only glowed red when it was enabled in the drivers and if u actually had plugged something in the jack (I have a 3.5mm toslink jack going to Logitec Z-680's and successfully achieved 5.1 surround)

also, do you have to find a BT module with a specific connector? or do these internal modules all have standardised connectors (are they mini pci-x cards or something)? I'm asking because I would like to salvage the BT module on my EX625

what i find a shame is that more and more laptops these days are missing expresscard slots and e-sata.. guess it's to cut costs =\

When I try to use the built in mic for a game like mw2, it does not work. When I try to setup a mic in win7 it does nothing.

    What could this be?

Hey! Even I am trying to find out more information on the spdif of 5740g and how to make it work. Even I have read on some forums that some laptop's spdif led only glows when - enabled through drivers and 3.5mm to TOSlink adapter is inserted. I already have Creative's 5.1 analog speakers but what I need now is an external DD/DTS decoder. Do you know about some economical decoder that could be used with my speakers.
And whats your review about Logitec Z-680? How much did it cost to you?

umm no.. it's probably cheaper to buy a speaker set that has a digital inputs

the Z-680 is alright.. the sub is way too loud though.. my setting is pratically close to 0.. and there is an annoying hiss u can hear when there's no sound (muting/turning down the volume doesn't make a difference).. i'd get the Z-5500 if i were u.. i believe Logitech is finally going to release a new model to replace them

    sorry for going offtopic

If you get something that decoded dts, will using the spdif out which is only 2 channel give you dts? (like hooking it to an audio/video receiver)

I have this usb soundcard coming in the mail.
    Amazon.com: PPA 1455 - Sound card - 48 kHz - 5.1 - USB: Electronics

It is going to be used with some altec lansing 251s (5.1 analog speakers). The sound quality probably is not going to be great, but I don't need much for my pc speakers.
It is realtek, but I figured out how to make it work. I have to boost the microphone level, but it starts working now.

To my knowledge.....no. It will not give you dts. For two channel (stereo) over spdif the decoder uses Dolby Pro Logic II to create a virtual surround sound.

Run the BLER tab (if your drive reports PI/PIF errors) test and post a screenshot.
Do you have problems all the time the movie lasts or only at certain points?

Now my DVD is totally messed up and not readable anymore, I don't know what that test did to it. Good thing i have a backup from it. I removed the program already...

Nothing. This test only reads DVD- I failed to take a look at the notepad screenshot with PI/PIF errors the first time- which wouldn't do much good because your DVD writer doesn't support this test- it displays no values.
If the unreadable DVD is not scratched- and is no more readable- most likely DVDs are disintegrating.
Does your DVD writer have problems reading other DVD+/-R?
Do you have a LiteON DVD writer in any of your computers?

BTW don't blame it on K-Probe- think what other DVDs you had recorded about the same time you had recorded this one and back them up before it's too late.

For the people who have installed the latest ATI drivers 10.7, did your normal (power play) clock rate go up to 300/300? If I remember correctly, before it was 100/150.

Under device manager in display i can only see VGA adapter not the ati 5650. whats the correct way of installing ati drivers..?

I think I know what is going wrong here. I think you trying to install desktop version of ATI Catalyst driver. Make sure there is a "mobility" word in the installer file name. This is the 10.6 installer file name for ATI mobility: 10-6_ mobility_vista_win7_ 64_dd_ccc.exe The number "64" stand for 64bit OS. If you have 32bit OS the file name may a bit different.

If you already trying to install notebook version of ATI Catalyst driver & have problem to install the driver, I think you may "messed up" the registry when cleaning the old drivers file & registry. You don't have much choice but you can try installing the old driver & then uninstall it in the Control Panel. After that install the new version. Or you can reinstall/restore your OS.

I agree with kizwan on this- probably desktop installer.
Also for future reference- don't uninstall ATI drivers- just install new ones on top of the old set. That is the way ATI recommends it (unless you have specific problems which you hope to solve by cleaning system of all the registry entries and files)

EDIT: Links are in the second post of the thread aka The Update Post ;)

Quick question, the only thing that's being shown in device manager as 'other device' is "PCI Simple Communications Controller". Any idea what is this and where can i get drivers? Seems downloaded all drivers from first page..

edit: just checked pcidatabase and found out that its "Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver" actually it doesn't say anything to me at all..

It does but mine is a basket case ;)
I tried the customized Launch Manager meant for 5920G or something hoping that we can somehow remap Bluetooth and Backup buttons for those of us who would like to assign them to something else.
Unfortunately that didn't quite work out as well as I hoped for and I ended up with not working 5920G's Launch Manager and Launch Manager for 5740G failing to install.
I had to use 5920G as it did install and manually substitute its files with more recent ones meant for 5740G. All of a sudden my "P" button would be illuminated in green and worked started working as an Eco button (or claimed to work as one because it made no difference to energy-saving settings)
So it does work but in mysterious ways sometimes. ;)

It won't be helpful other than in general recommendations and possibly some Acer software updates and part of drivers but it's based on different hardware so I'm afraid we won't be much of a help in this thread.

Hi guys, can you recommend me a good program that regulates the speed of the fan (5740G here).
The problem is that when my fan is working on the lowest speed (not the one that makes it shut off, but the one that it works on when you have a minor program running) there is a high frequency screech. Have you heard that too?
It disappears when the fan starts working on higher speed, it is really annoying and BuzzY.
So, is there a way to regulate this? maybe some additional bios update? If not, i'd be still grateful if you are to recommend a Fan regulating program, gonna set it on a higher speed and everything would be tip-top.
    Thanks :)

Is there anyway to enable bluetooth on startup? I have to turn it on from the button every time because I have a bluetooth mouse.

May be you did but was it on this laptop?
It's notebook specific and general programs like SpeedFan don't work and others are designed for specific models and don't work on others.
I tested some of them just to make sure a while ago and nothing worked.

Not all computer have FAN which can be control from a software. Most of it have FAN either controlled directly by BIOS or on hardware level (thermal sensor(s)). I believe it is true for most, if not all, modern notebook computer.
