    Hi Everyone,

I dont know if someone can help me out with a small problem I've been having with my 5740g.

I cant seem to change the brightness of my screen. The brightness keys do not work (ie Fn+Left/Right arrow) does not alter the brightness of the screen. When the mains power is switched off (ie laptop runs on batteries), the screen always stays on full brightness.

All other function keys (for example Fn+ Up/Down Arrow for volume control) work fine, I just cant adjust the brightness in any way.

Any help would be appreciated as it does tend to eat my battery life away.

    Thanks,

    Chada

Hmm I also have and interesting problem with my laptop screen. It may be the graphics card though, I'm not sure. When I play highly dynamic games, even old ones like NFS Underground 2, my screen flickers right in the middle. There is a line that crosses the whole screen horizontally and divides the picture in two. The lower end of the picture and the higher try to catch up with each other and they manage to do it. Do u know the nature of that problem? Any help would be gratly appreciated!

anyone knows how to fix "plugged in, not charging" issue? searched on google, saw many people having it on win 7. Anyone knows how to fix it permanently? (not the one with reattaching battery)

It's a common bug in Windows 7. Either restart your laptop or disable sleep under "close the lid" in power settings.

If this issue occurs when battery is between 95% to 100% charge level then its not a problem at all. Actually its being done to save the battery life. These very short charge cycles lessens the life of the batteries.

You can't- P button works as a program-launching one only in this notebook. The third button from the left is meant to launch Acer Backup Manager. Volume buttons are not illuminated.

Anyone can shed a light why I keep on getting missing d3dx9 file errors when I have successfully installed a game plus the laptop already comes with DirectX11? And shouldn't it be backwards compatible?

Maybe you are missing some older directx files...some games install these files automatically. Yes this laptop comes with directx 11.
Download these files here and let us know if it fixes the error.
    Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime

It just installs any files you don't have...

umm xp installation won't recognise the harddrive unless it's set to IDE mode or you have slipstreamed AHCI drivers in the installation.. or you have a USB Floppy for F6 installation of AHCI drivers during setup

I have no idea :D It's possible that they offer better performance or better compatibility with bigger capacity cards. I've seen cases (in Win Vista) where generic drivers couldn't handle cards above certain capacity while manufacturer's drivers could even though both should be able to handle it. This was hardware specific off course but as a rule of thumb I prefer manufacturer's drivers to generic ones- no one knows hardware better than its designers so they can make the most of it.

    ps.
for my curiosity... have you managed to fix the issue with the P key light?
I didn't realize that the led survived the "reassignement" of the key.
it would be fancy to have it lit at will :p

That was not an issue- it was a feature ;)
It's back to normal now but recreating it is near impossible- I have registry entries for moded Launch Manager meant for 5920G and actual files for a different Launch Manager.

i have the 5820TG.. it's optical digital out.. i have a 3.5mm toslink cable going into my logitech z680.. it decodes in 5.1

i'm fairly sure it would be the same for the 5740G

i had an MSI EX625 with a realtek HD 7.1 chipset too and it outputted via optical sp-dif

Just one question. Does a red light emit from the jack when you enable the digital output through the realtek settings? Mine doesn't. May be it will lit after using the toslink cable.

    @CVonV
It means emission of the red light is not a criteria for an optical spdif. Your 5820TG's 5.1 digital speaker configuration is working fine with the toslink cable (and that too without emitting red light). I hope it would also work in my 5740G.

yeah but all my previous experiences with optical spdif has emitted a red light.. like with dvd players, gaming consoles, set top boxes and what not.. oh well =\

no reason for it not to work on your 5740G.. what i like about the 5740G is that it has 2 output jacks.. my 5820TG only has one, a combined spdif/headphone jack

    Hey guys,

I'm trying to get rid of DPC latency spikes on a friend's 5740G (he wants to use it for pro audio stuff which requires low latencies). Once every 20 seconds or so, he gets a spike of ~8000 microseconds length with WiFi on and ~2500 microseconds length with WiFi off.

Now, I've researched the issue a bit. Googling suggests other owners have spikes, too. But, so far, I couldn't find a solution.

    Any thoughts?

Well usually it's networking related- Wi-fi, Bluetooth. LAN rarely causes that problem. I'd start with updating drivers one by one including all that may sound unrelated like card reader or sth.
There's some kind of app by Microsoft that allows you to pinpoint what causes it (which device) but I've long forgotten what was its name.

I'm still hoping, though, that someone knows what device/driver is responsible. I've already tried disabling some of the usual suspects--no success so far.

I've tested DPC latency and mine is really decent- up to 1000us one in while with Wi-Fi disabled (and up to 6300qs with Wi-Fi enabled and ON).
Few side notes- disabled means disabled in device manager- not switched off by Wi-Fi button. Secondly- all my drivers are up to date- including Realtek audio that has been released 3 days ago, touchpad, SATA, video, card reader and so on- you name it I got it.
Third thing- some of my devices are permanently disabled in device manager since I don't use them or don't want them to be enabled- this includes webcam, V90 modem and Ethernet card.

Emitting a red light (laser) does a criteria for an optical spdif. If not how it send signal to your speaker? On 5740G, it maybe get activated when you plug-in the appropriate device, e.g toslink cable. A lot of audio codec nowadays have jack detect override capability (meaning turned OFF or ON the input or output when it detect jack is plugged-in).

You are right. When I insert headphones the realtek automatically disables dolby settings in the properties. What I actually meant to say was that in usual cases the red light starts emitting when enabled through settings or everytime, no matter what you insert.
I tried inserting a hollow broken 3.5 mm lead but still didn't see the light (digital output was enabled). May be using a toslink cable and inserting its both ends (one in laptop and one in receiver) would enable it.
I wish it works because optical spdif is immune to EM interference.

He meant OpenCL (Open Computing Language) not OpenGL.
In essence OpenCL competes with nVidia CUDA and MS DirectCompute (which works on HD5650)
OpenCL needs working software, not specific hardware- there is ATI Stream SDK that supports OpenCL on Mobility Radeon HD5xxx series.
    That's all I know :)
