My mistake. :) I tried the benchmark again on Dell Studio with ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570, the effect does appear, just like shown in the screenshot.

One of the pieces actually broke I realized. I took out two more keys and found out how to put them back in. THe original won't snap into place, so I'm gonna take it into the acer depot for them to fix. No biggie, I had to get my hinge tightened because it's loose anyways.

I recently bought an Acer 5741G with Windows 7 that came loaded with bloatware. Thus I formatted the hard drives and installed a clean version of Windows 7. Before the reinstall wireless networking worked fine.

After the new install I installed the latest driver for my Broadcom wifi-card available on the Acer website, activated it and tried to connect to my home network. After a couple of seconds trying a window pops up saying that "Windows is unable to connect to the network", there is no question for password although the network is secured. When trying to connect to an open network the same thing happens. My router is working fine as I can connect to it with another computer. I can also connect to the router with my Acer by using a LAN-cable.

I have been searching the internet for answers for the last couple of hours but have not managed to find any. So far I have tried all of the below with no success:

    • Updating to last BIOS (1.13)
    • Installing all Windows updates
    • Deleting and reinstalling the wireless driver
    • Rebooting both computer and router
    • Disabling IPv6
    • Changing mode on device driver from b to auto
    • Changing channel on device driver from 11 to 6
    • Activate device discovery

I've checked and the IP settings (automatic assignments, etc) are the same for my wireless connection as it is for my LAN connection. I have also made sure ther are no saved networks in the network list.

Please, please, please could someone help me understand what is going on and help me connect to networks?

    Thankful for any ideas!

I overclocked my ATI 5650 to 670/900MHz ,Temp. difference is only 2*C , before it was 70-71 , now it's 71-72, so is it absolutely safe? I don't have money to buy another 5740G so i need to be sure that 5650 will not die soon (I'm noob in overclocking, and sorry for bad english)

Only in one game i have issues , in Battlefield Bad Company 2 , White screen appears when playing 10-15 min , many people has this problem even witout overclock , but in my case when i return values to default 550/700MHz issues dissapear , a can't understand it is because of overclock or it is game engine problem

I've heard it too , that's why i want to be sure that it's safe , so i decrease my 670 MHz to 610 and all problems disappeared , seems 670 is too high for my 5650 , but 900 MHz on memory it can handle , but will 5650 live shorter? Also every time when i restart 5740g clock resets to default , if i will change it every day will it affect bad on card?

Mobility Radeon HD5730 is in fact HD5650 factory overclocked (with core voltage 0.1V higher to insure stability) so you are not exceeding any specifications nu overclocking to 650MHz- in essence anything above that is where OC really begins. So no OC will not shorten your notebook's lifespan if the cooling system is efficient (which it is in case of 5740G).
My old notebook (that still works but is retired now) worked for 5 years with GPU OC- how much longer do you need? ;)

Acer PowerSmart Manager 5.01.3002 (Aspire 5553G download page) This works as a replacement of Acer ePowerManager.

Hello guys, can anyone please tell me if it's possible to run smoothly Bad Company 2? - tried everything on low with latest drivers with 20 FPS. And by LOW I mean editing settings.ini and put everthing on lowest value as possible. I have defraged disk and no unnecesary processes running - some from Acer and that stuff are still running + tried both overclocked GPU and with normal values. Thanks in advance. Oh, and thanks for this amazing thread and sorry for my english.

It should be possible with the HD5650- stock clocks benchmarks would be around 40fps on medium details and some 30fps on high details ( source). If you OC your card to a level of HD5730 it should go up a few fps ( source)
If you have an Aspire 5740G with HD5470 you may be in trouble though. Expect some 20fps on medium details and up to 27fps on low details. ( source)

Thank for very fast responding. I have the version with 5650 but anything I do my FPS is still about 20. I was monitoring GPU during gameplay and it never used more than 40% - didn't matter if it was overclocked or not. My friend with almost same laptop : I have 5400 rpm HDD and CPU i5 430 2.26/2.53 GHz, he has HP with 7200 rpm HDD and CPU i5 450 2.26/2.53 GHz with same GPU - getting those 40 FPS on medium+DX10. Considering that it's not a big difference I should be able to run it at least smoothly on DX9 low settings - even notebookcheck.net says so. But I am not. I even played a little with Catalyst Center - no change. I even saw smooth gameplay on worse laptop. Also - my problem is both single and multi player.

Update your video drivers (second post of the thread), verify that power-saving options do not limit neither the CPU nor the GPU- meaning the settings of the balanced profile are max CPU speed 100% and ATI powerplay is set to max performance when the notebook is connected to the power source.

There is no way to tell if the 5650 has been overclocked if I remove the software right?

That is odd. I run it on medium/high settings avg 44 fps. I do have a 520m, but that should not make that big of a difference.

Since you did everything else, maybe the isntall is bad?? I don't think that is possible, but I am just trying to help.

Thanks for your try :) . I have installed it from DVD and it was this crappy so I though the same - tried EA downloader, with no luck - still 20FPS.

Edit: Maybe someone could write me driver version he is using, please? Also I don't know if it matters - I have like 70 processes using 1.2/4 GB RAM on idle W7 Home Premium - but I don't think BC2 is so RAM hungry and I read somewhere Windows can free RAM if its needed.

The most recent ATI driver- Catalyst 10.8 is 8.762.0.0
The RAM shouldn't be an issue if 1.2GB is used but 70 processes is quite a mess- maybe one of them is interfering.
Also update your sound drivers- there was some kind of a problem with BC2 and Realtek. If it doesn't help kill the RAVCpl64.exe. It's Realtek audio control panel- some say it can cause problems with BC2 too.

I have both latest sound drivers and graphic drivers. Killing that AVCpl64.exe did not changed anything. Could it be caused by those "messy processes"?
Edit: Starting killing one by one.
    Edit2: Nothing changed.

Ati PowerPlay, its set to maximize battery life when AC is unplugged and videocard will underclock itself to 300/300.

You can change by opening ati catalyst and set it as "Maxmize performance"

When refreshing wireless networks and downloading something via Wi-fi, do you guys encounter a sudden speed drop? I'm using the Atheros driver posted here (the latest) and windows 7. I think it's an driver bug. After I click the wireless signal near the clock in the right bottom and the window with the wireless network pop ups, the speed goes to half or lower. If i make the network window dissapear, speed goes to normal.

Yes I even tested it yesterday- I launched inSSIDer and made it scan for wireless networks and the speed of download decreased significantly.
That said I'm not sure if it's a bug or all cards work like this- if I have the time I'm gonna test it today on a Vista notebook with Broadcom Wi-Fi.

Everytime I overclock My temps go up to 85º - 95º C both CPU and GPU. Would this be a problem of the fans? And after playing for about 20 minutes, the computer just turns off. Anyone could help me with this one?

I just did a fresh install and I can't find a link to the Launch Manager. I really need my volume buttons working and assume this is the way to get them working. Even if not I still would like to get my P button working.

Recalibrate the battery to make sure it's a valid number.
Mine is 12% after 6 months which is not satisfying either. My previous laptop lost capacity at a rate of 1% a month

I can't say much about the battery : I've only had my unit for a month and never unplug it from the power socket. I only bought it because I am going to live abroad for a year or two and I won't be carrying it around once it's there.

However the laptop is a very bad buy. It's slow and the sound is the worst I have ever heard from any laptop. The built-in speakers are just like listening to earphones that someone else is wearing! I've seen 4-year old laptops running XP that sound better and run faster than this POS.

To give you an idea: Dreamweaver CS5 opens on my 18-month old Core 2 Duo desktop in 5 seconds. It takes 23 seconds on this laptop. Firefox: 4 seconds and 12 seconds. It's like going back 5 years in time.

I'm kicking myself for not buying an HP/Compaq DV6 for the same price instead. I set one of those up for someone else since buying this Acer and it is much faster, and you get a neat little IR remote for home cinema built-in. I hate this Acer so much it will probably end up on Ebay before Chistmas.

I can't imagine why anyone here likes these things.

    No. I wish I was.

I've done nothing apart from use the thing. Of course I uninstalled all the trial versions of software, the games etc. And installed CS5, MSE and Word/XL 2010. That's all.

The thing was slow when it was first turned on and it has stayed slow, compared to my desktop machine and other laptops of similar price. I suppose that anyone upgrading from an older/cheaper machine might be satisfied with it but I certainly am not.

@maz84, it is a good idea to format & re-install fresh Windows 7. This notebook is not bad at all. If you don't like the idea of re-installing Windows 7, you can try updating the driver to latest version. With stock configuration, this machine already performed great.

I think something's wrong with your laptop...my dreamweaver cs5 loads in 3 seconds on this machine.
Do you have the model with intel's i5 and the ATI 5650 video card, or a different configuration?

The sound isn't that great...that's true..(and my display neither)...but for this prize, you cant have everything.

    Interesting.

My model has the i5 core, 5470 ATI video chip, 4Gb of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive (5400 rpm).

I was expecting it to be as good as my desktop machine but it is far from that. It is fine for playing HD video over HDMI but waiting for apps to load drives me mad. I use it for work (CS5, Office, some video editing), general internet use, and playing music and HD video via my home cinema but never for gaming (well, unless you count Suduko).

I did most of the driver updates mentioned on the front page of this thread. Also the BIOS update.

I am wondering if changing the hard drive to a 7200 rpm model might help but to be perfectly honest I think it's probably just a POS that I should ditch and replace rather than waste any more money on.

And the sound from the built-in speakers is just plain awful. (No big deal, admittedly.)
