But, what is the difference between the 5740 and the 5740G?

    Thanks.

Does anybody have a bluetooth in their 5740G. This is for those who wants to update their Broadcom 2046 Bluetooth 2.1+EDR USB DRIVERS:

    Broadcom.com - Bluetooth Software Download
Its a software updater Application. If anyone updates their BT drivers don't forget to inform about the latest driver version that you get by looking into the device manager.

    I have Acer Aspire 5740G-434G64Mn
and I have problem with framerate in games
it is not constant at all
and sometime loose about 20 fps in a second which will be bad for gaming
it sometime reach 60 fps when it is enough for me in 30 fps
    for ex
I play Batman at 40 to 60 fps
and RE5 constant at 30 fps (because it has a limiter)
and when we look at both of them, RE5 (constant fps) works much better then Batman (higher fps)
for that I searched for a program can limit my fps at 30 fps
and I did not find anything except FPS_LIMITER which did not work well with most of my games
    my questions are
    1) is there any other program can do that ?
    2) is there any way will make FPS_LIMITER works for all games ?
    3) why there is no option for that in ATI CCC?
    4) why no one make a program like that?
    I know, many questions
    sorry

Another question from a newbie with 5740G:

I want to do a clean install of Windows 7 on this notebook. I am already have a Win 7 Home Premium 64Bit DVD, so does the key that I can find underside the notebook work?
After clean installation which drivers do I need? Should these drivers be safed on an USB stick before clean installation. How could I install the needed drivers after clean installation?
Is it necessary to keep the hidden partition or could I delete this partition before clean install?

I know many questions, sorry, and also sorry for my English.

    Thanks. :)

Whether frame limiter is available or not depends on a game. It's a decision of a developer but also a function of an engine. Engine "tells" a GPU how to render graphics. Frame limiter would have to be injected in a code of a game like a trainer is which would require a special application for every engine but most likely a special app for every game and even every version of a game (patch version) just like trainers are developed. That's why it's not available in CCC nor does any external application fully work this way.

The key probably won't activate online- OEM ones are blocked but you should be able to activate Win 7 by phone with it. There are also some other ways of doing it- search the forum for them.
Do not delete the recovery partition- you may need it later. Make a backup of all the drivers and apps via eRecovery management just in case.
All drivers that you need are on Acer support site and in the second post of the thread (our versions are more recent so stick to them) Install them just like you would normally- most have installers- some exceptions (Broadcom LAN) require manual installation via device manager.

How do I find out if my acer aspire 5740G has bluetooth enabled? When I press the bluetooth button, the symbol appears with a red cross. I thought it might be a driver problem so I downloaded the latest updates from broadcom but I still have the same problem...

If it doesn't have bluetooth, what can I do?

    Thanks in advance.

Does it show in device manager either as Video Camera or as composite device under USB devices (not named Camera- just a composite device)
In general USB camera doesn't need external drivers- although if you have a Chicony camera I may provide Win 7 drivers which work (that won't help if you camera isn't even detected though)

    Me again,
Thank you for the previous replays btw, most of them were really helpful.
I'm writing down this with some questions about Bios.
As some might remember, I complained about a high Frequency Screech that occurs any time the Fan goes to 2nd or 3rd fanspeed(no problems on Max Fan speed or Minimum Fan speed).
As the problem is quite problematic (I hate hearing that noise) I couldn't help myself and went with the laptop to the Company I bought the laptop from. Now, one of the first questions The guy there asked me was if I had Updated or changed any Bios settings. I told him that i Have updated it to 1.22, but i havent changed any Fan settings simply because there is not such option accessible in the Bios. Then he said that no matter that i wasn't able to control fan speed manually, the Bios whatsoever controls it and that if I had changed the version it might be setting the Fan to work at a speed not usually common for the fan.(hence it might produce a noise at some levels).
Now, I want to ask whether all this is true. Note that although we all have the same laptop (Acer aspire 5740G-434...Mn), the producer of the parts might not be the same. So I suppose that the Bios might be pretty much responsible for this noise, yes? Note that if it was in fact something wrong with the fan, the faster it spin, the louder the noise might be. And as i said, the fan "produces" such a noise only on the lowest frequencies of work (2nd-3rd).

So, is there sense in the above post? And how can I downgrade my Bios from 1.22? Also, will there be problems with this downgrade?

Thanks again, and sorry for the noobish post :)

Do you remember what BIOS version you had before? And more important....was the noise there with the old BIOS? I kinda doubt that the BIOS version will make a difference with the Fan noise.

There should not be a problem with downgrading the BIOS...you might get a warning that the BIOS you try to install is older than the existing one. Besides that...there is always a tiny risk with BIOS updates, that's why acer warns you: Updating an incorrect BIOS may cause harm to your system. We recomend that you only do this after being instructed by one of our Customer Care representatives. By using these updates you agree to accept the possibility of product failure.

Hello, regarding the subject of switchable graphics and knowing that in the bios is activated switchable option. Is there any way to activate the graphic processor intel tab or completely rule out this possibility?.

    Here is a funny story.
I checked the box and found that my Bios Innitial version is 1.22
Then again, I have downloaded and installed 1.22 from the webpage.
    Now what? o_O

Now you know that the technician was wrong- you have the original BIOS and nothing has changed in a way the fan works so it's the fan itself- not the BIOS.
That said I doubt they are going to do anything about it.

My latest bluetooth (Broadcom) driver version is 6.3.5.430.
If anyone having a bluetooth gets more latest version please do inform.
Downloads, I request you add this also to your driver's list on second post. It may prove useful to those who have bluetooth version of 5740G like me.

EDIT: Guys, is it true that Acer 5745G has switchable graphics? My friend owns one and he was saying so.
It would be really a shame on Acer's part that they haven't kept their promise even after providing BIOS updates.
I think we should send them a collective request to provide us with a BIOS update that could enable SG.
At least we can give it a shot until our warranty gets over.

Has anyone replaced the thermal paste in their 5740G?

    maybe you are right
but why they don't make directx limit fps like FPS_Limiter program
and why they don't make an option to force the gpu to limit fps even in regular use from its driver
and why they don't make a program force the screen refresh-rate or act like that and make VSYNC limit fps for ex in 30 fps
    sorry
    maybe my questions are stupid

    last thing
I think CCC 10.8 is much better then 10.7 and make my fps is almost constant

what are your temps? I did this on my old pentium dual core, but did not see much of a difference.

The way I look at it, is the tzso gets hot (197*) and the cpu hits 199*f. This tells me that the cpu is only 2* higher than a sensor inside the notebook. It may get hot, but its because air is not getting out, not because of poor cpu paste.

I could be wrong about the tzso sensor, but I am thinking it is somewhere on the mb.

Another note about the power connect/disconnect beep.
It may have been mentioned before but i have not read all 180 pages of this thread.

if you first set your main volume to nothing and then mute the sound you will not hear the beep. i did this by pressing the vol down button till i knew that it was at the absoloute bottom and then (fn+f8) for mute and the beep is temperarily disabled.

10% after 6 months although I'm not buying this. It does recalibrate only in one direction- it works around 5 minutes calming to use no energy whatsoever but doesn't decrease the wear level after that.
It may lead to a situation where it's gonna show 30min battery remaining and then work another hour calming to use no energy ;)

Hey guys i'm posting on behalf of a friend, he got a 5740g with i3 and intel graphics etc etc. Though I was going to sell him my Logitech 5.1 speakers though I couldn't get the laptop to do a 5.1 output? from what i've read there is meant to be a 5.1 output?

Has any1 experienced the same problems or know how to get it to have a 5.1 output? thanks!

    Hy,
This notebook also has optical digital audio out by the means of TOS Link optic cable which can be plugged to headphones jack. You have to use a mini TOS link to TOS Link cable though.

It is too general don't you think? Can you provide these info:-
    1) Graphic card driver version
    2) Settings on Counter Strike 1.6:-
    - OpenGL or D3D or Software
    - resolution
    - display mode, widescreen or normal
    - color quality (16 or 32)
    - windowed or full screen

Okay i just want a consensus right now.. when i game on this machine im noticing some lag spikes a lot recently (wondering if its just me). In sc2 with setting at High my fps will be around 40's - 30's. During war it will go to about 20's to the teens and under extreme load itll reach single digits.(ive tried turning it down ... even put it on the lowest setting i keep getting these steep drops in fps .... especially in 4v4). In WoW im noticing a dip in fps in 25 man raids every now and again i get around 30's or 20's in fps and dips into single digits under heavy load for a few secs... it may be just me ... but i wanted a second opinion - my laptop is the acer 5740g with i5 520m and 5650 gfs card.

Well you either do know what’s wrong or you don't. If you don't why don't you just answer the question from someone who's trying to help especially that it addresses both possibilities- general and game specific.

Change the Display Mode from normal to widescreen. Let me know the result. I also get "black bars" at left, right, top & bottom of the screen if I set the resolution lower than the monitor native resolution. Instead changing the resolution of the monitor, it only re-sized the game video according to resolution you set. That is why you get the "black bars". It is not a problem actually. I test this on my Asus K42JV with GeForce GT 335M - Steam Counter-Strike 1.6.

Hi everyone, I got my 5740g yesterday and i`ve been running some tests on it and I was not too happy with my GPU temperature, room temp is ~26-27*C and the GPU is idling at 53-55*C and getting around 75-76*C in furMark at default clocks 550/750, I tried overclocking a bit to 650/900 and running furMark again getting 79-80*C in just 6 mins and i stopped there...Do you think that is fine and should i continue overclocking to see how far can the gpu go or not due to high temperatures?

@downloads, when you run Mafia II Demo benchmark, did you noticed at the firefight scene, the stone pillar look like this when hit by bullets:-

It doesn't look like this with ATI Mobility 4570 on my Dell Studio though. I just wondering was it also the same with ATI Mobility 5650.

It's more or less OK- far from dangerous anyway- so you may safely continue testing.

Imageshack doesn't like me- I can't see the full screenshot- server timeouts like it's down. Also does the full Mafia II include a benchmark because I don't have the demo anymore but I do have a full version (haven't installed yet though)?

EDIT: Server running again- I see your point but I don't remember hoe it looked on 5650. I'm gonna install the full version and see if the benchmark is available there.
