I couldn't connect my nokia phone to an adhoc network too.But you can use a program which makes your laptop an AP(only on windows 7) and you can connect to it with your phone.The program is Connectify.I hope it helps.

Hey, guys, can anyone offer an advice. I have the following problem my Acer keeps reverting to 16bit color after stand by or screen off or going to battery. It says 32bit in the settings(Catalyst/Windows) but only after I change it to 16bit and then back to 32bit it becomes 32bit until next screen off situation. Any suggestions?

 

Let me guess- Catalyst 10.10?
I've had the same problem so I reverted to 10.8 for now and it has vanished.

 

Hello guys i have a big problem with my acer!
I'm running on Win7 Ultimate 64bit
I tried to flash my BIOS to 1.16 (the link in the 1st page)
I did it in Windows mode, the setup went OK and i restarted my computer. Then i had a blue screen for just a little bit, then the computer restarted, and the same and the same ... I tried to restore my computer, but nothing happened. In the BIOS settings it shows the version is 1.16, but i'm almost sure that something went bad during the instalation.
Any ideas how to fix it ??

Will a OS reinstall help ?

 

If you use Ultimate version you have a retail DVD so you can use it to repair system (if you choose the system doesn't start option or sth like that)
You may also try the safe mode- maybe it's going to start that way and you'll be able to figure out what's causing problems (i.e. via windows events log)
Since the notebook starts and you ac access BIOS setup it's unlikely there's anything wrong with the BIOS itself.

 

The safe mode isn't working either. I disabled the automatic restart on system failure and i saw what problem is : "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. [....]

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives on hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdsk /f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer."

i'll try the windows repair function in a few minutes

I changed the value of "Sata Drive" in BIOS to IDE and it worked..

 

Even I have the same problem. Getting back to 10.8

 

I removed the links to Cats 10.10 and replaced with 10.8 for the time being and left a note. Thought it was my problem but apparently not.

i have question: i install small program driverEasy and scan my laptop, program found 19 old drivers. will download and install it? many chipset, realtek, wifi etc.

when i have download new realtek drivers manualy? in site acer is old version only and in 1 post nothing write of it

I was thinking on a CPU upgrade, something along the likes of i7-640m or i7-740qm. Does anyone know if the quadcore will work on this laptop? Not really a big deal, actually I kind like the 640m more...

I don´t know if the extra 1MB of caché is going to do a lot, but I feel that the i5-430m is falling short lately.

 

I don't think i7 740QM is a good idea- first of all it was never mentioned by Acer specs so it may not be supported and second- the reason why it probably isn't supported (and if it is- the reason why I wouldn't buy one) - TDP is 45W (without integrated graphics) compared to 35W on the rest of CPUs officially supported by 5740G (and that's with integrated graphics)

 

Guys, those of you not having problems with Catalyst 10.10 are you using 32-bit Windows or 64-bit?

 

I'm on 64bit and I do have this somewhat-16bit-while-claiming-to-be-32bit-color

Well i7-640m it is, throw in a Vertex 2 120GB and I´m sorted until Ivy Bridge.

By the way I was thinking about selling the 6GB Samsung Ram that the laptop came with and get me some Mushkin 8GB CL7, Kingston HyperX or G.Skill. Any opinions? Will I ever feel the difference? Will the 640m make stock memories "better"? Am I nuts?

I don't think you'd benefit from more memory or faster memory (in terms of timings) that's unless you max out your 6GB which I doubt you do.
Difference in speed is of the memory is not gonna be noticeable so if you insist on upgrading to 8GB you could just swap the 2GB stick with 4GB one without changing the other one- that would be a lot cheaper.

 

That´s another upgrade less, so I´m down to the i7-640m. I´m quite excited about it actually. 2.8 GHz with turbo up to 3.46 Ghz, that´s almost 1 Ghz difference compared to the i5-430m with turbo on.

Plus it has 1MB more cache than my i5. I don´t know if that´s gonna make a difference but it sounds good.

 

I'm looking forward to some benchmarks (before and after) and some high-res photos of the inside if you don't mind.

 

Thanks for the replies guys, I uninstalled the 10.10 and reinstalled them and it seems to be working for now. I'm on 64-bit Windows too. If anything changes I'll notify you, downloads why don't you try uninstalling Catalyst install the 10.10 to confirm whether it works and remove the warning if you have the time.

Update: Scratch that, 10.10 still does that trick. Reverted to 10.8.

i have big problem:
i have two partition on my hard disk (500gb) C: and D:. when i copy some data from D to C or C to D everything slows very much. for example - i copy 2gb avi movie and open my computer folder- it takes 10seconds (normal it going <1s), when opening program or e-mails, prophities folder etc. my laptop slow down. Id do only when i copy data from 1 to 2 partition (big or small file large - no diferent always the same effect. ). So what i should do? Downloads help, anybody can test it in yours 5740g?

 

Well copying files from one partition to another has that effect. The reason is the same HD has to read from one partition and write to another partition at the same time. When you try to open an app at this time you're putting even more load on the HDD that's already maxed out and your request is in fact even more reading from the HD.
This effect may also be due to AV software to some extent- it would be there anyway but AV software may take additional time and resources in order to scan the file as it's being copied.
In principle it's normal- I don't know how bad is it and how long does it take but it looks OK.
Faster HDD would make it less painful by making the time of copying shorter.

I think it is too bad in my laptop (fo example i have 8years old p4 and dont have this efeect). When i copy from another computer from network but no my hdd its ok, when i copy from usb device, flash card is ok. Only when i copy from another partition my win 764bit is very slow. open firefox takes 20s, open photoshop 1min. i reinstall ahci driver but no effect.
Can you run some test in your laptop-copy some large file and open for example firefox etc?

 

There is big difference where you copy from.When you copy something from the network or usb or flash card you read from those and only write on your laptops HDD,so your hdd just writes.But when you copy from your hdd and paste it to the same hdd it then reads from one part of the hdd and simultaneously writes at the other.And if you open a program then you add another read process.So you have 2 read and one write process at the same time.This is a very big load for the hdd.So its normal to have slowdowns when there is some heavy hdd activity.

 

i test it in my old laptop (very slow fujitsu siemens) with same win7 64 bit and when copy files system slows but not so much when in 5740g. In acer for example firefox freeze and opening some bookmarks is immposible,,, after copying everyhing be good.

Just installed ATI Mobility 10.10 drivers, but now whenever I open my laptops lid, it looks like it has reverted to 16 bit colours, on my dekstop background!! The gradients are blocky, and I tried reinstalling from a complete fresh using Driver Sweeper, but this had no effect. Any ideas???

 

i have my problem again: when opy 5gb file from d: to C; drive i cant open any program np. photoshop or paint for example. after copying they are open automatical very fast.

It's been mentioned- go back to 10.8. Some of us have this problem with 10.10 (me included) others don't. I hope Cats 10.11 get this fixed- I'd really like MLAA

today i had crazy blue sreens! they were caused by the Current Atheros Wi-Fi: v 9.1.0.314... win 7 said this driver istn certified for win 7.. after that my w-lan adapter immediatly stoped working and bluescreens apered on every restart once the w-lan card driver should get load by the system... watch out this wasn't funny at all... i think the old 8.xxx driver form acer driver should be the stable one but its very old indeed...

 

i've upgraded catalyst to 10.10.
performance did not change for me (i've a 5470, not 5650), but catalyst CC no longer has the overclock menu.
does anyone have the same problem?

 

because catalyst mobylity have a overclock menu in catalyst?

 

It is certified and WHQLed by MS but if it causes problems for you roll back to 9.1.0.100- it used to be rock solid for everybody.

I never had such a menu.

 

Can someone tell me what's wrong with my Acer and give me a solution? It spikes every 2-3 min in any game i play. WoW, SC2, WC3 and other games too.

Do you have a Western Digital HDD? If so go to first page of the thread and follow the instructions in the second post (QuietHDD)

 

I just confirmed that my hard drive is indeed Western Digital. I have downloaded the app and ran it. Do i right click the app and click "Disable HDD APM Now"?

Could you explain what the underlined part means? "Disable HD APM now just says the HDD to disable this feature. It will be also called automatically whenever Windows wakes up from syspend or hibernate"

Hi, I have a question about the video card. It seems that 5650 supports PCI-E v2.0, but when i check in GPU-Z it says that the card is working in v1.1. So, is it just me or that's the same for everyone.

Aw I didn't get any credit for discovering the QuietHDD fix?

 

I think it means you don't have to re-apply it after hibernation, however you still need to do it after reboot (which equals to setting it to run at startup)

Mine says 2.0. Which version of GPU-Z are you using?

i bought a 5740g, and i have a slight issue,and i signed upped here so you can give me your lights
i own the notebook for about 20 days,and i think that it is great..despite sth stupid happening with the battery indicator..
it has happened only 4 times in 20 days,yet it happened.two times i was running the notebook with baterry energy, and the battery indicator was stuck in 98% so the laptop closed without showing the 5% message.
two other times,i put the cablee to charge the battery,it was charging but the indicator was stuck to 7%and the orange light infront was flashing on and off.a simple restart is a solution to the problem,but why????anybody any idea?

What BIOS version do you have?
Is the notebook new or refurbished? Take a look at the battery stats in Everest- what's the designed capacity and current capacity, does the Everest show discharge rate and remaining time when the notebook is running on battery power?

On the GTA IV issue- do you have HD5650 or HD5470, what driver version and what game version?
