Never mind Everest- I thought they still have some free basic version but apparently not- download HWInfo32, run it and report back on your BIOS version (in motherboard tab) and on battery (in smart battery tab).
You may want to update drivers- second post of the thread has what you need. The latest ATI drivers in that post are Catalyst 10.8 because 10.10 cause some problems for some of us.
I'd recommend GTA IV with patch 1.0.0.4 (patch number 5)- nothing older and nothing more recent. This one seemed to give the best performance. -
Are you sure it's running in v2.0 because you have to wait with the cursor on the box to show you the message?
I have the latest bios, chipset drivers and catalyst 10.10
I wonder if it is a hardware problem or software, any ideas? -
I confirm that my ati hd 5650 is also working in pcie v1.1 mode although gpu-z shows it supports v2.0.What is the difference between pcie v1.1 and v2.0?And is there any performance loss if it is working in v1.1 mode?Also can i change it if it is better to be in v2.0 mode?
PS:Here is screenshot of GPU-Z.The the red circle is the supported mode and the black circle is the current operating mode.

It looks like you are right although it's not a problem- if we had at least 128bit GDDR5 we could talk about link speed but not with DDR3 128bit memory.
There used to be 256bit GDDR3 desktop cards that didn't benefit from PCI-Ex 2.0 so our cards are not really able to use it to full extent.
It's interesting to know why though- you have 1.22 BIOS and Cats 10.10 while I have 1.16 BIOS and Cats 10.8- still the same result :/ -
Hi, did someone tryied to connect multiple monitors to your 5740g? Is that true, that you can connect 6 monitors to your 5740g? I want to connect 2 monitors to my laptop, what wire I need (because only 1 wga port in laptop)? Thanx
-
Six is impossible on a notebook- you'd have to have DisplayPort. Without it you can use only up to two "legacy" monitors (via DVI, HDMI or VGA).
There are also some kind of dongles required to do it (see here).
I'm not sure if it means you could use two or three monitors on 5740G (I don't know if internal LCD counts as a legacy monitor or not) -
-
but where is smart battery tab?can't find it

Update to BIOS at least 1.16 it fixes battery issues although using older BIOS and completely draining the battery may have already damaged it.
That's the theory- in practice everybody who updated saw their battery problems fixed.
Since you're updating BIOS anyway go straight to 1.22- it's in essence 1.16 with new VBIOS for Radeon card added on top of it. -
as for gta iv, did everything and now i get a fatal error:ws10
any ideas? -
After you've updated BIOS and Catalyst drivers try to reinstall the game.
If you bought it recently it may be already patched to version more recent than 1.0.0.4 and that may cause the problem. -
anyway thanx for helping -
downloads you're the best!!
updated bios and catalyst,re-installed the game and runs sweet!!
in the first post,the gta benchmark is about overclocked ati?cause i believe that i shouls lower a bit the requirements.
anyway,thanx a lot,be sure that next time that i have an issue to solve,you're the first i'm gonna visit fot an opinion
cheers -
Glad it worked.
Yes the benchmark in the first post was done with 670/900 OC. -
Hi again,
I have another interesting problem, if you open for example notepad and press and hold the left arrow and the up arrow and then press the "a" key you will see
"aaaaaaaa" right, but if you do the same and press the "s" or "d" nothing happens witch is odd. The issue dose not exist when you are using external usb keyboard, but i haven't find any other solution yet. I'll be glad if you could share some ideas, because i think we all have the same problem? -
I've seen the non-working key combinations in a review many months ago:
* WD + E
* SD + E, Z, X, C
* AS + X
* WA + X
* up arrow & left arrow + S, D, G, H, Z, V, B, M, space, right Alt, right Shift
* down arrow & left arrow + Enter
* down arrow & right arrow + 1, 3, Q, T, U, P, J, Z, V, P, space, right Alt, right Ctrl
* down arrow & right arrow of numeric block + 2, 4, 5, 7, 0, Backspace, I, O, Z, V, B, space, both Ctrl, both Alt
It's related to the keyboard controller and is not model specific.
Still I can see where the problem part comes in- it's technically possible for you to need a combo like this in a game but so far I've finished 14 games on this notebook and few business projects and this was never an issue for me.
I don't think there's a sollution to this. -
It's a problem for me, but I can live with it. For example in fifa it's often used when you're dribbling with the ball to the upper-left diagonal and you want to pass or shoot it's just not happening
But anyways thanks for the info and keep up the good work, you're great downloads (bow) -
for fifa use joypad
supa dupa game is here

im frequently getting blue screens while playing dirt 2...i think its coz of over heating...im doin a bios update right now...my laptop is just 2 months old...anything i shud know abt before doing the bios update??
-
BIOS has nothing to do with overheating but feel free to update- it may be useful anyway.
As for overheating- there's no need to guess use GPU-Z (monitors GPU temp only), Hardware Monitor (monitors both CPU and GPU) or even AMD GPU Clock Tool (GPU only) working in the background while playing and either ALT+TAB once in a while to take note of temps or set your monitoring app to log values.
Check if the game is patched and if your drivers are up to date. You may also clean the vents just in case. -
playing gta iv while on baterry energy sucks!!
do you think i should disable power-play?i prefer quality to quantity.. -
I wouldn't play GTA IV on battery either way- I don't think you can get more than 45-50min of gameplay. While there are (unfortunately) many games for which 50min of gameplay equals significant part of single player story, GTA is not one of them- you won't even notice any progress made in that time.
But if you want to play it on battery power- yes I'd use max performance profile in Windows and in PowerPlay. -
I am having lags on my mouse on Acer Aspire 5740G. Is tehre a fix for this please? The problem is after using the keypad and then use the mouse it lags a little and then responds.
Hello people.. has anyone else got this problem after using the keyborad the mouse does nto respond straight away.. please help -
dowloads,if i overclock the ati i'll get higher performance??and then after finishing gaming return to default settings?
look, as i told you in a previous post,i am noobie,don't know much...so,couldd you guide me into doing it?and by guiding tell me what i need to download,how do i do it,and what do i do after finishing gaming.also,anything extra you feel it's right to inform me about
by the way,i really like this machine!!happy bought this one and not sth else
cheers -
but the power supply is max 65 w? i would install i5 460m
-
It's likely that your core may go a bit higher and the memory may be able to get to like 900MHz or even 1100MHz if you're lucky. It's unit specific so you have to test it yourself. After you are finished gaming/testing you have to use "restore default clocks" button. Remember that even if you don't restore them default frequencies are going to be applied at reboot.
You may get approximetly up to 20-22% boost in fps- depending on a game.

I noticed that some buttons combinations are not working. For example "left arrow" + "up arrow' + "S" or "D". I updated bios but it didn't help. Can you help me fix it? I can't play FIFA on my notebook
-
Welcome to the forums Simini
Nope- no solution. We've just talked about it starting from post 2367- I posted a list of non-working combos (not a full one though) but it seems to be controller related and I don't think we're gonna see any changes in that. -
Simini just roll back 2-3 pages and you will get your answer.
Downloads thnx m8 we have the same results in cpu-z (was afraid that bus speed and dram frequency was low) and yes i'm aware of the clocks of 5650 , but u got like 2k more points in 3dmark , gonna o/c soon and see what happens. I'm also considering a fresh windows install, too much trash ...
Overall i'm quite happy atm with this laptop, only problem is that the speakers are making noises ... but what the hell laptop speakers... -
hello download, i installed a intel i5 460m on my 5740g
the sistem start but when turn on bios don't recognize cpu but you can touch key f1 and the system run gratly.
my bios is 1.22, how to modify 1.22 bios with intel i5 code update? -
Maybe resetting the BIOS to default values will do the trick...
-
Just an FYI for those interested,

Well it´s not that hard.
Press F2 at startup to get into the BIOS menu, then go to the far right option and select "Default values" and exit saving the changes.
You´re welcome. -
By the looks of things GT425M doesn't seem to be any faster than HD5650 but I'm looking forward to your benchmarks.
-
i have updated kbc and bios but the problem persist
-
Maybe the CPU is not properly placed in the socket. Another user in a Spanish forum had the same problem with his i7-620m, the pushed the CPU properly in place and now it´s working.
He went from an i3-350m to an i7-620m. -
-
I'm afraid the reason is the BIOS for 5740G has been launched in April (Q2 2010) whereas Core i5 460M has been launched in Q3 2010 so the BIOS can't recognize the CPU correctly.
We can't really mod BIOS for 5740G because Phoenix BIOS Editor version that we have is too old to properly open and edit new BIOSes. I'm not sure if this method of splitting the BIOS in two would be OK if it was to be joined again after editing. You should contact kizwan with this problem. -

work all in inclusive but at turn on notebook display error microcode
-
But you said in another thread that the CPU is working. You said you can game and work in windows.
What microcode thing are you worried about? -
-
But my question is:
Does the computer work normally with the new CPU? Can you play games? Can you surf the internet?
If so, what more do you need? -
As Rhadamanthis mentioned earlier he has to press F1 at boot each time after the microcode error has been displayed just to start the notebook.
For once it's rather annoying- nothing serious though, but it also needs investigating- does the TurboBoost work or not, is the RAM at right frequencies, does the VT work etc.
CPU that's working as genuine processor may not utilize all of its features be it power saving or performance features.
