    Well, I can't say I am a PROUD owner of Aspire 5740G, but I am a owner
And I have few questions, hopefully someone can help me.

First of all, my batter lifetime is only 1h 45 min (with dimmed settings and power saver). What's up with that?
Secondly, many games don't run like they should
For example, GTA IV benchmark test gave me 8 FPS.

    i5-430M
    640 GB HDD
    mobility radeon HD 5650
    4 GB memory

What drivers for HD5650 are you using- is PowerPlay enabled?
Any other benchmarks apart from GTA IV?
Are you sure that i.e. AA is not enabled?

Powerplay is enabled, CCC v. 10.12 (It was the same with 10.4 or something, the default one, I updated it hoping it would be better)
And do you mean anti aliasing? Im not sure about that. Give me some tips

I got Resident evil 5 benchmark 65 with low details and lower reso =/

Im doing a format soon, maybe that will help?

    Waiting for advice :)

I have the latest patch and I did disable powerplay, didint help. Must I restart too after disabiling it?
I have notiched a thing like this: When I start a game (for example: star wars force unlashed 2) it will lag as hell, after i change reso and details to low, then change them back to high, the lagging will stop and the game runs smoothly.

Monitor the GPU Core & Memory Clock with GPU-Z. GPU-Z can record these values when playing games. See if there are any differences between when you first start the games & after you fixed the lag. Highest Core Clock (stock) you can get should be 650 MHz. If the Core Clock is lower than this when you disabled PowerPlay, it is best to keep the PowerPlay enabled. Did you overclock the GPU? Format & re-install windows is a good idea to troubleshoot the problem because it can ruled out hardware problem.

i recommend u to unistall 10.12 and then install ccc10.11... use driver sweeper to uniinstall...then check again..if it still lags then download a software called "amd gpu clock tool" n manually set the core clock to 550 n memory clock to 750...

guys is der any soln to fifa 11 replay lag problem....??? im looking fer it all over but i cant find ne soln...downloaded the latest patch...tried enabling the trilinear bufering, etc etc...but replays always lag...i think the 5650 is pretty sufficient to handle the game....atleast without AA..nething im missing??

To determine whether the BIOS recovery procedure is successful or not, your notebook should automatically restart by itself if the procedure successful. It is important that both the battery & power cord are plugged in during the procedure

Make sure there are three files in the CRISIS disk:-
    1) MINIDOS.SYS
    2) PHLASH16.EXE
    3) BIOS.WPH

Copy the files manually from the CRISIS folder to the USB flash drive (CRISIS disk) if it still not in there. Sometime WINCRIS.EXE failed to copy these files when creating the CRISIS disk. Make sure BIOS.WPH is from the latest Aspire 5740G's BIOS.

BIOS recovery should be successful if at the end of the process your notebook automatically restart by itself. There are two conditions even after successful BIOS recovery your notebook still not working:-
    1) Faulty hardware - most probably GPU since the screen is blank.
    or
    2) CMOS/NVRAM contained unsupported settings.

For condition no. #2, try clear/reset CMOS. Please refer to service manual to learn how to do this.

Thank you, I will try these things, but thats what I did.

Anyway I bought the bios Chip from Ebay to change it if these things doesn't work, this sucks, I wanted to buy an SSD for xmas but now I won't till I get my computer working.

I will tell you, guys, once I get the computer again, if it worked.

I have Catalyst 10.12 and im not really having problems either although i have not compared it to anything.

I really need to sort out my cooling problem though - playing fallout 3 on a 32inch TV at High settings - Max GPU temp was 91 degrees Celsius.

In Device Manager...click the Disk drive and go to properties...under the policies tab, check the Better performance option. Maybe that helps...because by default the Quick removal is enabled.

Most likely nothing will help- USB was designed to do everything hence it does nothing particularly good.
Max practical transfer via USB is roughly 30MB/s- that's only with big files.
Whenever you copy small files it gets terribly slow- even 3-4MB/s.
I do backup on USB HDD every on 5740G and did/still do on other computers as well and I grant you there's nothing wrong with either the HDD nor the notebook.
If it's backup you may think of backing up HDD image rather than files per se- this- big files copy faster.

I'm not sure if would make sense speed-wise although an idea seems very interesting. The problem is that both internal mini-PCIe are labeled "PCIE+USB2.0" on system schematic. It's said that manufacturers often bridge mini-PCIe to use USB2 bus. If our mini-PCIe are really using USB2.0 to transfer data the whole point of using either of the devices you've linked would be completely lost. IF it's really PCI-express bus it could be interesting.
Then again it looks like Wi-Fi card is using genuine PCI Express which would mean it's the same with the other slot.

All you can update is SATA drivers for chipset- Intel rapid storage. The inf pack from Intel is just there to help Windows detect unknown/new hardware but that's about it- Windows is using its own drivers to run it.

hey downloads ..Can u plz tell which will be give more performance -
    1) 4 GB DDR3 1333Mhz with CAS 9 or
    2) 4 GB DDR3 1066MHz with CAS 7.
I know that the 1333Mhz one will downclock itself to 1066.....but will the CAS latency be the same (i.e. 9)....? if it remains 9 then the 1066 one will be faster right...?

9 means slower the lower the latency the better.

True however latency is clock specific 1333MHz RAM will have lower latency at 1066MHz than it has @1333MHz.
All in all it's most likely so close that you won't notice any difference.

Thats if they bothered to program in lower speed latency settings.

If not it could just run at 1066 Cas9

It always go down because of CAS is dependent on the clock rate.
Also keep in mind that higher CAS on memory operating at higher frequency is not really slower than lower latency on slower memory.
i.e. CAS 9 on 1333MHz means access time for first word of 13.5 ns while CAS 6 on 1066MHz memory means access time for first word of 13.13 ns
(I was too lazy to calculate the delay times myself so I copied if from Wikipedia.)

So CAS has to be considered in relation to the memory frequency- in this example 1333MHz CAS9 has almost identical access time to 1066MHz CL6 although at first glance one would think CAS 6 us faster.

I was too lazy to calculate the delay times myself so I copied if from Wikipedia.

Anyone knows anything about FSB i have tried already a lot of configurations on setfsb, i have a 2.1 core i3 and if i change the pll register 00 04 from F7 to F4 i can overclock about 10 MHZ so something change, anyone any ideas.
By the way i dont give a care about " you should not overclock your laptop ".
    I WANT TO OVERCLOCK.

Try decrease the value at offset 0x0F. After you hit the limit there (you'll experience BSOD or crashed), try increase the value at offset 0x10. At your own risk, of course.

    its not automatic.

A module will have a predefined set of frequencies and latencies.

Some vendors don't bother to program in extra ones above or below the rated speed so if you set it to run at a lower frequency then the latencies stay the same.

CPU-Z can read it under the SPD section.

If it were automatic how would my ram run lower than the other types of modules at 5-5-5-15 rather than 7-7-7-21?

All memory modules are backwards compatible within the category and 1333MHz DDR3 has to work at 1066MHz and it's gonna have different latency at that frequency because the clock is different.

K i dont care about the risk, to be alive is a risk too, if i decrease more than 04 or more than 07 the computer crash.
I dont think that the pll on setrfsb is the same of Asus, but i will continue to try.
    Thank you

Don't increase/decrease too much at one time. Yes, PLL chip (clock generator) on Aspire 5740 series notebook is different which is ICS9LRS3197AKLFT. This PLL chip is not supported by SetFSB. You can only achieve a little performance with what are you doing right now. If you can find datasheet for your PLL chip, you can try PLL Pinmod.

Maybe one of the newer updates broke the ability to let you install it since it's not really out, yet. (Where will the final version be out, anyways?)

On an unrelated note: I finally got my Ubuntu 10.10 64bit running smoothly with the ATI 5650. <3

i am gonna replace the keyboard .

now what i want is that i want to check the hardware if any other thing is damaged ..

so is there any software that could check every hardware is functioning properly or not .

Remove the battery and PSU before attempting any of this!

Remove the keyboard and make sure that the connectors underneath it (keyboard one and touchpad one) are dry. Clean the keyboard connector (the keyboard part- the cable, confirm the mobo part is clean) with alcohol and make sure it's dry before you reassemble it.
You can boot up without the internal keyboard but with an external one and test the notebook if you're sure it's clean.
Also- when you remove the keyboard you're going to see if the spill went any further or was contained by the keyboard itself. If it looks like the spill got deeper you should dismantle the laptop and clean it with alcohol before the spill gets a chance to cause corrosion.

Any particular reason you want to install Win 7 SP1 beta?
It doesn't seem to add anything particularly important so why don't just wait for an official version.

PS I know it's not a solution to your problem ;)

    It's only 14MHz- negligible really.

While we're on it- since we can apparently extract and mod vBIOS, would anyone be willing to test a BIOS with voltage raised by 0.05V (the level of HD6550)? Preferably someone with crisis disk in case something goes wrong.

I'm really looking forward to overclocking this lappy, i've managed to achieve a good 675\970 for my GPU which is kinda good me thinks but the overvolting will surely get us higer which is wonderul, unfortunately I can't propose for testing because I'd risk to stay without a notebook which is very important for me at the moment.
I'm also looking forward at the CPU overclocking too, would it be of use to gain higher frequencies for the GPU without increasing the CPU's? Wouldn't our processor bottleneck the overall performance?
I'm running with 10.11 Catalyst and I've also noticed that the medium fps in the Mafia 2 bench has dropped at a 23.6 something, the game doesn't seem to be affected though, maybe it is just the benchmark.
Anyways I'm keeping my eyes peeled for the overclocking, best of luck!
    Saluti from Sicily!

Not sure if I'd up for raising the voltage, simply because I no longer game on this laptop, but I wouldn't mind seeing a drop in voltage to improve battery life. (Maybe a drop in voltage only at the lower clocks.) But I'm not sure if I want to experiment with the laptop as it is my main computer at the moment.
But if you do get a stable overclock/overvolt kernel and can drop the voltage to the lower clocks or even underclock the lower clocks, let me know. :p

    @ ivanmmj

Undervolting is a bit risky as the card would stop working if the voltage was too low. No damage would be done but that would be a bit troublesome.
When it comes to overvolting we know that HD5730 works fine @1.1V and HD6550 @1.05 so we're pretty safe aiming somewhere there.
Damage can be done but it's rather unlikely in this particular case.
When it comes to undervolting at 100/150MHz it's completely unknown territory.

yea my 684/1096 isnt stable for more than 4 hours of instense gaming, Black Ops if I'm run/knifing in nuketown I'll hit 210 F for the cpus and 198-200 for the GPU so I think I'm hitting the max for the system, I would like to overclock but for once I am humbled by the fact that I have a laptop which outperforms desktops at LAN parties for WoW now.

On a PS, anyone know how to get the fans rocking 100% full time? NO software works for me. And a cooling pad that shoots air in the bottom ducts on these.

Impossible to control the fan unfortunately. Overheating?
So I assume you'd like some overvolting too.
