I don't really know, but they're working fine in my laptop. To be honest I found the new version with a program called driver genius, i don't believe they're adding beta drivers to their database, but that program also proposes me to install drivers for hardware that I don't have on my computer, so... who knows![]()
-
Well beta or not it is WHQL and works fine for me too.
-
Hello people.
After a HDD format and reinstallation of Windows 7 I can no longer see the graphic of the volume when I change it.
What has to be done in order to have that feature again?
Thank you all in advance. -
Which version of Launch Manager do you have installed?
-
Oh I see, I have not installed it yet.
Thanks a lot.

Im a newbie here, but I've had the 5740g for awhile now. Just recently a few bad things happened. I dont know what exactly happened. I know I was treating a bad virus and it was getting the best of me. But also I having been using Pro tools audio suite and it clearly tells you not to use your same hard drive. I took this as precautionary because they dont want to be responsible for musicians failed drives. Anyways I noticed I couldnt download or run installers. this was my first clue to something major. Currently in process of backing things up on an external drive. I have a few questions.
1. is there any hope at salvaging this hard drive?
2. whats the best procedure to back up drive(im using Windows default backup currently, its taking forever!). also in the future whats the best way to prevent this. im running 64 bit; should i make a partition next time? would this help...
3. I saw in the forum somewhere someone said they had an external drive as a second drive running the windows OS... how is this possible to run an OS from an external unless your running eSata usb of some sort.
4. Does anyone know the compatible models for hard drives. Im going to upgrade to 7200rpm which Pro Tools requires anyhow. The problem is they want it to be a second drive. This still perplexes me what i should do. HOW CAN I MAKE A SECOND DRIVE WITHOUT A USB EXTERNAL DRIVE!!!!!! if anyone can answer this i would be so thankful. For instance is there anyway to install firewire or esata on this motherboard.
5. Looks like Im going to have to do a clean install. I was afraid of this because I remember the jenky setup the acer comes with. It took forever to take all the bloatware off and fix it. like the annoying beep. is there any recent fixes to the power cord beep? i remember having to reinstall old drivers do correct this and i dont even remember where i got those from. Sorry for all the questions. thanks for the help in advance. -
My way of ensuring data safety is to create a second partition- then go to where my user profile is stored on C drive- right click and drag to the new partition and choose move. From that point on my documents, music, desktop and so on are on drive D. In case something goes wrong I can format C:\ and lose no data.
As for a second HDD- its possible to remove the DVD drive and replace it with a caddy which can carry a HDD- search for details in the thread- caddy should give you some results.
All HDDs of normal size are compatible so as long as you stick to 9.5mm high drives youre OK.
Theres no other or new way to remove the beep- either you live with it or use the old method, sorry. -
thanks for the quick reply. It appears I ended up getting kaspersky internet trial 2011 and it works great. going to buy it. took some virus's off including ones like 5 other cleaners didnt find. Anyways I will make sure and partition this next time around because it appears the c drive is corrupted because I cannot download or install new programs. I dont know how it let me install kaspersky. i had to download it on another pc than transfer via an external drive. But anyways much thanks for the CADDY TIP!!!!!! I'm definitely going to do that. I'm going to swap my current 5400rpm 250 gb and put that in the caddy(now does that transfer files just as fast as a sata cable?) anyways i'll but the 7200 rpm in the manufactures spot.
I also am curious how to choose the hdd. you mentioned 9.5mm. many sites do not give this spec. wont i be safe to get a 2.5" inch.
that beep was terrible. when it boots up sometimes i will accidently knock it out and i get the chills. haha -
Some 2.5" drives are 11mm so you can't buy everything- you should be safe if you decide to buy a drive up to and including 640GB.
If you want 750GB or 1TB though-you should visit manufacturer's website and check the dimensions. -
I am using this one: ST9500420AS Momentus 7200.4 SATA 3Gb/s 500-GB Hard Drive | Seagate and it fits perfectly ...

Hi there, i have read up to 250 page and i am going to catch up tomorrow, but i have 2 problems.
1) How am i going to clone my 640HDD to my newly acquired 60GB SSD (Corsair F60) - bought Acronis True Image 2011 yesterday but i keep receiving the new drive is smaller blah blah and a red X appears
2) I have installed the SSD tried to recover from the Discs But it soon hangs
What next???
To tell you the truth i would prefer clonong since i would not loose my applications etc but i am open to anything..
Regards -
Well, you can't fit 640GB storage information in 60GB disk. It's simply impossible. So i guess cloning the 640gb drive is not an option.I guess you could just backup the information you need and that will fit in the new drive.
-
Hmm, i have to say that only 14GB of the drive are used plus the recovery partition (how can i erase it from the new drive i think it os many GB's).
Acronis detects 3 Partitions PQservice, System Reserved and Acer. Which one (s) do i keep? -
I see.My Acer came with linux so i just formatted the drive, installed Windows 7 x64 and made 2 partitions. One for the OS and one for storage.I also don't have much experience with cloning programs and such, so i can't help you.
-
Finally, after 2 tries i managed to recreate the partition from scratch to the SSD and install the Windows (W7 HPr. 64Bit).
The first problem is that i cant say there is significant difference before with the HDD (WD640GB) and now with the SSD (Corsair Force 60).
Also sometimes i see that the computer has become jerky in responsiveness.
I have to mention that after the completion of the instalation i have only 19GB left on my SSD (Why is that my windows instalation is 14GB) and i suppose there is the recovery partition (How big is that) and how can i erase it - the HDD would remain intact.
Regards -
Windows 7 System Requirements
You can disable "System Restore" if you want to have more hard drive space, but I wouldn't recommend doing this. -
So how can i erase acer recovery partition???
-
P.S.: I have recovered my laptop, just installed the 1.16 modified bios and bought a OCZ Vertex II SSD to install there the System. I will tell you tomorrow if it works fine =). -
-
It works REALLY FAST!. -
I know this is written again but i can't really find the answer. Does the replacement of the optical drive with a caddy with a second HDD works flawlessly???
-
As I said, I'm working with the SSD in the SATA1 and the HDD in a caddy on the optical drive place, and placed the optical drive on a external caddy to use it through USB.
-
Is it nesessary to use the specific bios? How am i going to flash it? Possibilities to brick a nearly 10day laptop?
-
You can also use stock (unmodified)1.16 BIOS but you can't se stock 1.22.
-
You can use the 1.22 stock bios, but you will have to plug the caddy once Windows is running o between bios check and windows loading
-
That's why I said he can't- it's kind of troublesome isn't it?
-
Yes it seems troublesome...So without any purpose to be offensive to the modified bios builder (who we all thank
) The question is:
Is it safe to use it? Are there any known bugs? How am i going to flash it-will it be the same way as the original one whithin windows enviroment?? I probably need it since i have seen once the red spots on my screen (I have the 1.16 original bios).
@Downloads: Special thanks to you for supporting the thread (of course thanks goes to everyone here). How do i erase the acer recovery partition since windows does not detect it???I have my 60GB SSD with 20GB left without anything else installed....
PS I forgot to mention that i have a 5740 DG, so is the bios the same as the link provided above? -
For repartitioning, I recommend a live ubuntu cd and gparted. Pretty easy to use.
-
@ cdrov
As for BIOS- 1.22 is 1.16+ new VBIOS. The reason why the caddy won't work with 1.22 appears to be different default settings in BIOS not the actual difference. So by using 1.16 modified you in essence get 1.22 with settings that allow you to use the caddy.
You won't see any difference and risks involved should be identical to the risk of flashing any factory BIOS.
Aspire 5740, 5740G and 5740DG use the same BIOS. -
Thank you very very much... One reason that i adore this laptop is that you own it
...
-
Thank you Sir. I definitely didn't deserve the complement but who cares, right?
What I'd like to achieve with 5740 is to work on modding VBIOS to increase voltage.
If this works out we get at least another 50MHz core OC (more likely closer to 100MHz).
Since getting from 550 MHz to 670 MHz got me from 7200 or so to some 8400 in 3DMark 06 (mind you memory OC was also involved) another 100MHz could do a lot of good. We would still be limited by memory though and increasing memory voltage even if possible would be hazardous- Acer did downclock VRAM for some reason and we have no idea why. I'd rather not take any risks so I'd leave that part alone.
Any thoughts on that? -
Good day all,
Im a proud owner of the 5740g laptop,
How ever i have come across some recent issues with it..
When i play utube video's the pc freezes, screen goes blank.
When i run HD movies the pc goes blank and freezes ?
I bought it a week ago and everything is updated on it, so i dont think its a hardware updating issue.
Any help would be great! -
GPU driver possibly? What version of Catalyst do you use and what is your BIOS?
-
Hi there, i was wondering...i still have the original drivers that the laptop came with and i don't seem to face any problems...So should i update with the newer ones or not?? If yes which, do you think would be the most important ones?
Futhermore i installed a Corsair Force 60 (Sandforce 1200) SSD but i can't say that i am really impressed by the performance of the laptop, could this be a driver issue?
Finally, since i have ordered an HDD Caddy to replace the optical drive, and use the 640GB HDD that came with as a second Drive i come up against two questions:
1. Will the optical drive, which is a blueray player in my case, work flawlessly through an external usb case?
2. Is the battery life affected (unfortunattely it does not last more that 2+ hours with max brightness and light internet serfing-the laptop is no more than 15 days bought), by the two drives that will be working simultaneously??
Regards to all -
Hey,
My current BIOS version 1.13 - when i try update it gives me a error
Then I updated Catalyst drivers, after reading what you wrote on the first page should keep the older version, but now the freezing has stopped - though it still gives error. When i load a HD movie is says " Not enough memory"
When i run a youtube video on the site it says Video drivers crashed and was recovered..
So yeah... dunno whats up with that ?
Regards -
Networking drivers would be the one to definitely update- for security reasons if not for anything else.
Video drivers are usually pretty important too however I'd wait a week before doing so. New Cats 11.1 seem to bring a lot to the table (improved performance & MLAA support for HD5xxx series among others).
Using SSD and HDD at the same time will inevitably affect battery life, can't say by how much though. -
Thanks Downloads! Another question you or someone else might know. I used the emergency recovery disks so i created the recovery partition to my 60GB SSD and then it installed the windows and all the acer cr**. After that i see that i have only 19GB Free on my SSD, will the visible files are almost 12gB. Where are the rest?

Even if there's nothing in the trash bin there's some percentage of HDD reserved for this- it can be adjusted just like AlexFLCL mentioned.
Also- swap file and the amount of memory equal to how much RAM do you have are reserved (the latter for hibernation)
In my case it's 8GB reserved for trash, 4GB swap file and 4GB for hiberfil.sys- 16GB in total. -
Hey guys thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction last week about the caddy hdd. btw WD or Seagate? haha. anyways I have a new problem. since doing a clean wipe on my HDD, I have started over and found some good and bad. a good was the new drivers from realtek take the beep off completely even in boot up, however the bad i feel they or intel or something is effecting my video sound. To put it simply. NO HDMI SOUND IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! somebody please help me. I use this all the time. I have tried doing driver crap and everything. I also dont see an hdmi driver setting under sound properties but when it used to work i never remember seeing that.
i also dont have realtek audio manager even though i have downloaded the latest drivers from realtek(2.56) and the hdmi 2.55 will not install for some reason. -
Hey fellow 5740G owners.
I have a 5820TG which has the same screen hinges as the 5740G, and for the life of me I can't figure out how it's supposed to be taken apart if I want to DIY replace the screen. There are only two tabs at the bottom left and right corners supposably for screws, but other than that how do I remove the screen hinge in order to get to the actual LCD?
Thanks. -

maybe there's some usefull info or links... -

synaptics touch driver updated 15.2.7
Synaptics TouchPad-Treiber Download - ComputerBase -
Update post... well updated
I used official Synaptics website though.
EDIT: I've tested these. This driver pack adds "scribe" which you'll probably find useless but that adds two (I think it was two) processes to startup which you should probably prevent from starting if you don't intend to use this feature. -
@ AlexFLCL
Thank you! Thank YOu. It worked. that is funny an AMD driver fixed the error. Why intel is trying to do the graphics driver for this is beyond me. haha. Thank you!
HDMI SOUND IS BACK! -
Hi all...
First of all, sorry for my english...
I have an Acer Aspire 5740g, Intel Core i3 processor 330M, Ati mobility Radeon HD 5470, 4 Gb DDR3...
I search on the net, but i can't find any indication how to overclock my CPU and GPU...
I find this forum incredible, rich of experct, so i decided to ask here...
Thank to anyone answer to me... -
As for CPU- we can't do it as of now.
GPU can be OCed- the right tool is in the first post of the thread.
Type in new clocks (starting from default 3D clocks of 750MHz core and 800MHz memory) press set clocks and start testing.
Remember to use "reset clocks" on exit otherwise the OC will stick until restart. -
GPU can be overclocked using AMD GPU Clock Tool v0.9.26.0.
CPU can be overclocked using the latest version (2.3.163.129) of SetFSB selecting ICS9LRS3197AKLF clock generator.
I had a chance to test SetFSB beta version supporting the clock generator and it worked quite well when changing clocks by small steps (~1MHz).
During testing I got bus speed from default 133MHz (@2128MHz) to 140MHz (@2243MHz).
I haven't had much time to play with it yet, so I can't tell you min/max stable clocks.
CPU-Z shots - bus clock: 125MHz and 140MHz
