^ Use CCleaner, v3.04.1389 in particular. Its the best registry cleaner that I have ever encountered. I have even tried trial versions of paid ones and they were all BS. They were inconsistent and resulted in the changing of mime types and icons.
While using CCleaner, its better to choose your options wisely before cleaning unneeded stuffs. And ALWAYS take a backup of the registries with CCleaner before cleaning. It will give you an option to take backup of the registries before fixing selected issues.

I had problems too when I installed cat 11.3...PC rebooted (unexpected shutdown error message after reboot...with the option to boot in safe mode)
It took me some time to finally get it installed correctly. I noticed the ATI Stream app doesn't get installed anymore (didn't use it anyways) and in Device Manager it says now: HD 6500M/5600/5700 series.

I found in 3820tg mods/tweaks thread a method to control fan speed and it works , first you need to download RWEverything ,
Once installed, launch it at the top you will find many buttons. Find one that says "EC" or "Embedded Controller" (noted with 1 on image) and click on it , it should look like in img ,
then go to 90x03(noted with 2 on image) it should have value 04 for auto fan speed ,you must to modify it to 14 for manual fan speed ,
then you can modify the speed in 90x04(number 3 in image) values is there:
    FF - fan off
    90 - fan lev1
    80 - fan lev2
    70 - fan lev3
60 to 00 -fan at max
if you want to get back to auto fan speed just modify 14 to 04 in 90x03.
you can put values like 98 , 85 ,.. , some will modify speed little from the decimal number like at 95 is little slow speed than 90.

And my temps with fan at max:

i set value 99 for browsing , is quiet and the temps are around 40* for gpu and core 2 , and around 30 for core 1.
*Click on images , i don't know why images don't show.
**90x05 will not work(as 3820tg) because we have the same fan for cpu and gpu not like 3820t)

Update: if you put in 50x01 value 07 the "p" key led will turn on , change it again with 01 if you want to turn it off.

I have this line running across my monitor from the left to right. It's thicker towards the left and then disappears across to the right. I have tried updating BIOS and graphic card driver but does not seem to work. Can anyone shed some light? I have attached the photos below. Another thing to note, it seems to be 'above' everything else. Meaning running any program does not remove that line. The moment I switch on the computer, the line is visible. Thanks people :D

That is a hardware issue- RMA the laptop if it's still covered by warranty.

Thanks once again Downloads. What do you think caused this? Its still covered under warranty so I will have to bring it back. Pleasantly surprised it took 10 months for something to crop up. My last Acer took only 2 months for it to break-down.

Every line in an LCD display is controlled separately- something must be wrong with LCD electronics itself. I've seen similar issues.
On top of that- it's not really Acer's fault. It's whoever produced the LCD that is to blame.

Drop us a line when you're done with Acer Support.

It will usually take 2-3 weeks for the repair to be done. Acer sure takes their time Down Under. Will advise in about 3 weeks time hopefully and I sure wish they will replace it.

Did anyone have some issues with the DVD Writer (hl-dt-st dvdram gt31n). For almost half year I burn some DVD's but most of them are not readable on the Recorder ? My problem is like this.

    ===========================================
Hi, I've an Acer Aspire 4741G with a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT31N DVD RW drive. I've burned numerous CD-ISO images on CDs with no problem, but I could never burn closed/finalized DVD-ISO image on any DVDs correctly. I've used Windows 7 internal DVD writer, NTI Media Maker 8, and Nero 10, and non of them managed to burn any DVD. Both Windows 7 internal DVD writer and NTI Media Maker 8 reported that the burn process was successful, Nero 10 also reported burned successful after data writen was verified. I've check all DVD's disc surface and I could see burn marks on their surfaces, but when I tried to open all those DVD on Windows Explorer I couldn't see any file and folder listed, and when I view the DVD property Windows reported that Used Space: 0 bytes, Free Space: 0 bytes, Capacity: 0 bytes. What happened? Help please.

I think you used cheap media such as OMEGA or something else is that right? i had the same problem on my PC but i found out it's because i used low quality discs, buying verbatim discs solved my problem

Edit: I give up... it seems this is more complex problem than just low quality discs.

This happend to me a few times as well (I have the same DVD model)
After burning DVD's...it shows like Disk is empty with 0 space used... and is of course not readable. The weird thing is...I can read the Disks with my older Dell Laptop. Did you try to read 'em on a different PC?

Yes, on my mother's acer extensa ~3 years old some of them are readable, some none. Before a few months I get angry about this and reinstall the Windows (7 Ultimate x64) and it start to work properly, but yesterday try to copy and burn some things and when start coping the disk the speed is 10-15 KB/s and after some time it start to speed up - copy full DVD 4.7 GB for 10-15 min. I'm thinking about a HDD on the recorder place and some external USB recorder because I don't use it very often.

Yeah! I think this DVD drive is crappy...guess acer had to safe the money somewhere. I still can't play homemade videos correct in media player from DVD (they play OK from harddrive). A reinstall didn't fix this for me neither.

Forgot to add what it said display adapter was in device manager. I have it as ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5600/5700 Series. All of my games are still running horribly though. Really frustrating.

Unfortunately vertical viewing angles are poor on all glossy LCDs, so it's normal.

    @ ka4o_pi4a & lacienega

If your drivers are useless at this point you may want to get adventurous and search for a new firmware. It's hard to get one for OEM drives and it has to be the same hardware revision but you might want to give it a shot.
RPC1.org would be a nice place to start.

Word of warning: You may end up with bricked DVD writer so don't do it unless you're willing to take the risk.

    -------------------------------------------
    Horror Story for your amusement:

Just for educational purposes- some of you may need to draw some conclusions from this ;)
I rebooted my 5740G two days ago and it started up until the moment when I saw an empty desktop and a Windows pop-up saying there is no disk D:.
I've been using D: partition for data storage for years so in case Windows goes belly up and I have to reinstall, all my data (desktop, music, outlook.pst, pictures etc.) is stored on another partition.
This partition has vanished along with 300GB of my data including business projects.

I thought maybe the partition marker had changed and the partition is now hidden do I checked Widows drive management only to find that Windows sees C partition and a lot of empty space...
To cut a long story short- a fellow moderator recommended me an application (Testdisk) to possibly solve the issue.
It turned out that partition C and partition D were overlapping. The "end" of C overwrote the "beginning" of D, so for Windows there was no D partition- if it doesn't start- it doesn't exist.
I came to the conclusion that I will be able to rescue only one of those- either leave it as it was (with C working fine) or rescue D which would make C a never-ending partition. It turned out to be true.
I've decided to go for D- I keep all the data and personal folders (my documents, desktop etc.) there.
This ended the existence of operating system rather abruptly and killed a recovery partition too (the latter- I didn't expect).

I used recovery DVDs to install Windows again and I'm operational again.

I wasn't even phased by this for one good reason: I make backups of all my essential data every week (at the time of this event my backup was 4 days old) and I back up my business projects every day- on a pendrive and on my smartphone.
I haven't done anything disk-management-related prior to this event, my computer has been scanned by two AVs and one anti-spyware app that week etc.
It was just one of those things that happen out of nowhere.

The moral of this story- for those of you who don't make backups- is pretty clear. External HDDs are not expensive and even though we don't have USB 3 nor do we have eSATA in our 5740Gs- backing up all the essential data shouldn't take more than an hour a week. Worth it- isn't it? :D

My CPU Cores are idling at around 55 C and during games they can get to upper 90s C. I'm guessing that isn't normal for this laptop. Should I RMA it? Is there anything i can do?

Mine idles at 41-43*C (haven't changed thermal compound and I don't use a cooler) so I would suggest you both consider new thermal paste or thorough cleaning.

It's hard to tell. If you have no warranty seal like I do, and do not brake anything in process- no one will ever know that you've tampered with the inside of the notebook.

Guys! I have finally got my 5740G repaired. The ATI vbios is dated 8-10-2010 so the mobo itself must be pretty new :) . Its the motherboard with the 1.28 bios version. I asked the service guy to apply the thermal paste to the GPU. Is there also a break-in period for these thermal pastes? My GPU idle temp. is 50C now compared with the 54C of the previous GPU (ATI 5470).
Going to play crysis 2 now. :D

Hi guys. I just got a call from acer service centre. My warranty expires on august 23rd and they have told me that my model is no longer being manufactured (our beloved 5740g) so they cant's guarantee warantee extension later on during august. So they want me to pay now 3900 rs (that comes to about ($75-80) claiming later on it will be expensive or likely that i wont get a warantee as model isnt continued.so i asked if i could pay for it in my nearest service centre.but they gave me a specific account to make payment saying the offer isnt applicable at your local service centre. so is this genuine??

^ Its genuine. I extended mine for 4500 Rs. through the ICICI account that they give to you. Are you getting a 1 yr or 2 yr warranty extension? If they are offering you the warranty then it doesn't matter if the model is discontinued or not. They are bound to give you the warranty. The rule for warranty extension is that you have to extend the warranty at least 90 days before your main warranty expires. Thats what they told me.
Ask the acer customer care, they will give you a phone number which is specially available for warranty extension.

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information about the socket type in this thread and the internet in general.
    Is the socket a BGA1288 or a PGA988?

If it's a PGA988, I wonder if it has the microcode for use a i7-720QM?

Service guide states PGA near CPUs on FRU list which suggests PGA988.
Everest also detects my CPU as PGA988.

As for Core i7 720QM it wouldn't work for two reasons- I'm sure microcode has not been added to BIOS since this notebook was never offered with this CPU and more important one- i7 720QM is 45W while all CPUs in 5740G are 35W. That would probably be unusable.

So physically it should fit but technically it may not work... I wonder if there's any harm in trying it? (IF the microcode is included, I wonder if the extra 10W's would be too much for the motherboard to push into it and the heatsink to dissipate. (I only ask because I MAY be able to get one free...)
But even IF it were to work, my battery life would only get worse... and it's bad as it is... (I'm lucky to get an hour and 10 minutes now a days...) But it could be the newer linux kernels seem to be taking more and more battery power to run... but I run it on AC 95% of the time, too... and I can work on making the heat dissipation better...

The Aspire 5740G's BIOS does have i7-720QM microcode (CPUID 106E5h).

Someone has successfully upgrade his/her i3-330M to i7-720QM on Aspire 7741G. You can read more information over here:-
Acer Aspire 7741g - soldered CPU?

@ivanmmj, if you can get it for free, maybe you can try it, at least we will know for sure whether it will work or not. I don't see any reason it shouldn't work. The i7 will draw more power & the idle temperature will be slightly higher than i3/i5. Idle temp for i3/i5 around 40C to 45C while i7 is around 50C to 55C. I has 2 notebook which one has i7 & another one has i5. Both achieved almost the same max temp when running the same task. It's all depend on how good the cooling system (heatsink & thermal paste) are. You'll get worst temp if the cooling system is bad regardless whether you have i3 or i5 or i7.

I'm afraid the temp under full load will be significantly higher but it the CPU is free I guess it's worth a try.
