Hello, G-sense error keeps increasing as per SMART. It is on value 118. Do I need to worry about it? I don't know what causing it, because the notebook has been sitting on my table since I bought it.

Possibly it has a chance to brick the machine.

Hello. Few days ago I have downloaded and installed bios update 1.22 AA.
Today I have noticed that there is newer version, 1.28. I have updated it, but in the BIOS menu I still see the old version - 1.22. Why?

Also, I have a problem with TOSHIBA e-STUDIO Series device. I think I have downloaded and install all the drivers for Aspire 5740G, but I still get the question mark in the device manager.

i find my cpu getting overclocked because of the turbo boost even in the older games which is not required , this causes more heat , is there any way to limit my processor use for the game so that it wont overheat (as games like jets n guns , etc dont require processor) its heating because its getting overclocked to 2.53 ghz for long time but processor usage remain 11-30 % , so i guess auto overclocking is causing heating , how to limit it ??

also i played the game @100 degrees for 1-2 hrs , is it ok , i mean will it damage the proccy or any other component ?? as far as i think since its tmax is 105 degrees , processor can run at 100 degrees without even getting threshold ..

What is the best way to clean this notebook without opening? I took some air in a can to the bottom vent but nothing happened. Took it to the back one and a small amount of dust came out. Helped some, but cpu is still dropping to 1100-1200 mhz durning games. Instead of 10 times in 2 minutes, it only does it 3 times every 2 minutes. :(

Does it when it hits around 94c

No other way to clean it. With temperatures like this both of you- Rajeshjsl and mustangless should open the notebook- clean it and apply new thermal paste.

@Rajeshjsl In the settings of the Power Plan you can set maximum and minimum (in %) the frequency of the CPU. Try from there. For ordinary browsing, audio and video I keep my on 50% (1178 MHz) and it's fast enough.

I was afraid of that. Took out a 3 year warranty on this notebook so I don't want to open it and possibly void the warranty.

Took the air can after it again and 30 minutes of play only resulted in 1 drop in cpu speed.

When my 5740g was new , the max temp was 73* with OC , now it get over 85* without OC i just opened it to clean from dust , but have not so much dust , so i opened the heatsink with fan and cleaned the old paste , now i want to put a new one , what do you recomand an arctic silver matrix or 5 , arctic cooling mx4 or zero therm ? i want to go on matrix but i'm not sure.
And the notebook have not any seal , my warranty is valable yet if i don't left any evidence?
    Sorry for my english.

Mine doesn’t have a seal either- no one will know you've re-applied the thermal paste.
As for the choice of the paste- people get into heated (pun intended) discussions about it but the fact is- buy a good one and it will be a lot better than the stock one. I like the Arctic Silver but the others you've mentioned are probably as good (never heard of Zero Therm though)

Realtek HD Audio 2.59 audio driver is out :)
Had 2.58 before and it removed "power adapter plugging sound", but now it is back :D Anybody knows how to remove it again by not reinstalling(downgrading) drivers?

guys i was wondering how much of a difference is there between the i5 430M and the i5 460M???
And also do softwares like "gamebooster" really help increasing gaming performance??

Not nearly enough to upgrade if that's what you're thinking of. Core i5 460M is faster obviously but not by much- the difference will be more visible in video editing than in gaming but still not really worth spending money on.

As for "gamebooster" it can't really improve performance- it may help you
"reclaim" some performance that you've lost because of your own actions.
If you keep your system clean and mind what's being added to startup, update your drivers and so on there's not much mojo this piece of software can do.

    Little review.

Bought myself this cooling pad. Price was around 25 Euro (that would be 30 bucks). From what I read it is supposed to be quite effective but "not best for carrying around".

So far only thing it achieved is lowering amount of time it takes for fan to push CPU temps back to 45°C and fan can be off slightly longer. So much for "built-in three 70mm fans" and "thermally enhanced aluminum alloy". This is my first pad tho, so maybe it is supposed to work that way.

Noise level of fans is slightly quieter than "kicks-in-to-lower-temps" noise level of built-in laptop fans. So yeah - if you are listening to music or gaming you don't mind, however in quiet room you may get annoyed. You can't customize fans speed.

My goal was to completely remove need of those annoying high-pitched laptop fans and possibly lower keyboard/touchpad temp. I failed, don't know what I was thinking. Guess this wasn't best way. Only thing I achieved is that "comfortable viewing angle". :D

So yeah - you were right.

garfieldncheese, downloads: Well I don't know about 460 but friend of mine has 520, which I would call at least similiar and he can run smoothly Bad Company 2 on almost highest settings - as opposed to mine 430 where I get 30 FPS at max on totally lowest settings. We have same GPU but he has 7200rpm HDD. I tried to tweak my system a bit for performance, he basically don't give a damn about such a things. But he also gets 90°C and annoying as hell fans while playing that on his brand new ASUS. :D

HD5650 scores some 30fps (on average) in BFBC2 while not OCed (according to multiple benchmarks available on notebookcheck)- that's using high settings and 1366x768, HBAO and 4xAF.
It also scores some 60fps at low settings. So the problems is somewhere else- there's no more than 2-3fps difference between Core i5 430M, 460M and 520M

I just assembled my laptop and now the temps are visibly lower , first time i forgotten to connect the fan , i assembled the laptop and turned on for 10 minutes , the temps not gone over 55* , but i realised that the fan is not connected and dinssasembled it again.
In idle temperatures as the same but in load is a considerably diference. from over 85 to ~70.

Hi, I'm new on this forum and I haven't taken the time to browse through this entire thread for my question.

I've recently discovered that drivers aren't installing correctly on my computer. I try to install the newest ATI drivers, but when I look in the folder they're supposed to be in, there is nothing there. This is somewhat of a concern to me since I'm a huge gamer and I've noticed a drop in performance over the course of a few months. I don't know if it is because my hardware is faulty or if I just need to reformat my harddrive and start from scratch. I also tried installing the BIOS update, but in dxdiag it says I still have version 1.00. It is weird because I can get through the entire install process for the BIOS update and graphics updates, but then it is as if nothing even happened. Does anyone have any clues as of what to do? Do you need more information?

    Welcome to the forums Blankskull.
I have no idea what dxdiag is showing- on all my notebooks it has always claimed BIOS version to be 1.0- 5740G is no different.
Use Everest or HWInfo32 to check your BIOS version.

Current ATI Drivers are unpacked to C:\ATI\Support\11-3_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc
    You should find setup.exe there.

If you get to reinstalling Windows- there is no point in going for a clean install in my opinion- just use eRecovery and update drivers afterwards.

Thank you for the prompt response. :)

Good to hear about the BIOS driver date at least. One thing I left out was that the graphics card driver date in device manager is 12/9/2009, v.8.682.1.0.
I have run driver sweeper in the past, as I had trouble getting openGL application to run, which fixed my openGL problem but did not fix the driver date problem. I vaguely remember some time around early December 2010 where my computer became distinctly slower and openGL stopped working.

Do you think the eRecovery option where my user data is saved would help? Does that option also include saving files I've created like word files and programs?

What you have is an original driver that came with 5740G.
You may want to update manually- via device manager/driver tab- update driver and then choose the option that allows you to choose the place where the driver is- and navigate to the folder I mentioned before.
That will update the driver only- CCC will not be updated but then again CCC does not influence performance in any way.

Supposedly eRecovery can recover to C partition so if you had created any other partitions they may not be even touched if you choose not to do so.
That said- I haven't used eRecovery yet (system running fine) and my data is very important to me so I wouldn't do such a thing without a proper backup in place.
That reminds me I’m yet to make a backup this week which is what I’m gonna do this very minute.

So when I do what you suggested it says that the latest drivers are already installed. I do not have access to CCC at all, if that makes any difference. When in the install manager on the screen when it asks for 'express' or 'custom' installation, does that pathway matter? Because when I click 'express' it automatically puts the pathway down as C:/Program Files/ATI Technologies. Is it actually *trying to* install* it there? I'm just not sure what to do anymore. :(

I don't want to chance erasing all of my files yet either as I have no way of storing the data at the moment and I still have classwork that is stored that I need until the end of my semester.

Did you do exactly this: device manager, properties, driver tab, update driver button, browse my computer in search of..., let me choose from the list, click on the "use disk" button and navigate to C:\ATI\Support\11-3_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF and choose an INF file.
If you follow this path it should install whatever driver you choose even older than the one you have at the moment. BTW is how is your GPU called in device manager?

    @ commanderkaran

Yes it's back and files have been modified on April 11th which means there might have been some actual changes.

There are No changes as far as I can tell...all the numbers you can see on the BIOS screen are the same as before...

*Yeah, I'm really stupid. I thought "Browse my computer for software" was "let me choose from a list", after doing the latter I got the results you predicted. Thank you.*

Try " Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" & then click " Have Disk..".

I just checked the 2nd released of BIOS 1.28 with 1st released of BIOS 1.28. Both exactly the same. No changes. The only changes I noticed is KBC.BAT for KBC.
    1st released:-
    flupdate -bbl -nocomp -noverify -novr -noreboot -v -x 2 W04AC322.bin -runbsf PchDec.bsf
    2nd released:-
flupdate -bbl -nocomp -noverify -novr -nopause -noreboot -v -x 2 W04AC322.bin -runbsf PchDec.bsf

Check the power management is disabled in the advanced tab of driver settings (accessed via device manager) and in Windows power profile. I haven’t noticed any difference but then again it’s not like I’m very far from the router.

My acer warranty ends in 6 days. My squaretrade warranty ends in over 2 years. I don't think squaretrade will void the warranty if I open and clean this. Seems to me that is "normal maintenance".

Anyone have instructions on opening this thing up? I have cleaned my old toshiba before, so I am not a total noob at doing it. ;)

I don't find instructions to open this laptop but is very easy , i found some mobile phones harder to open , after you open all screws from back you must to open the part over the keyboard , part with power button volume , wi fi and bluetooth keys , it is only on clamps , then you should realize what to do , for the black and white lcd wires you should disconect from back , from wireless module near the hdd , remove the screen , remove the keyboard and upper case. Tell me if you need more help.

My gpu temps now are lower with OC(680/950) IMAGE LINK
At 72* the fan speed rise to level 2 and the temp decrease to 65* , when temp reach 64* the fan speed return to level 1 and the temp ascend again to over 70 , it is any way to make the fan speed to remain in level 2? Or i cand somehow increase the fan speed to maximum? If this is not possible softmod i can modify anyway the fan alimentation(that is possible to ps3)?

Thanks for the messages guys, but I contacted squaretrade and they told me my warranty would be voided. I also contacted acer, so maybe they will service it for free. :(

edit: acer told me I could clean it, but any damage would not be covered. Guess I will continue to use it how it is.

It's very hard to damage an antenna without completely destroying the notebook itself. It is possible that one of the antenna connectors came off- open the hatch and check if both antennas are connected.

It's safe for HDD- my old HDD was 51-52*C on average and got up 60*C when I was gaming- the latter temp wasn't safe but the drive soldiered on anyway.
    Anyway- 46*C is fine.
