don't waste your time with mlaa. i tried it and its not for the 5650m. it gives a bigger performance hit than normal msaa. but if you do wish to try download ati radeon pro.when you run it for the firs time it will ask your permission to "enable features in ccc".click yes and mlaa option appears

Hmm, well if it doesn't actually provide any performance increases on this card then I don't see the point. Thanks for the heads up.

Upload those photos to an external host like imageshack and post thumbnails here (links for thumbnails will be provided on imageshack- you just need to copy them)

Has anyone here ever tried Bios Ocing their GPUs ?? mine runs flawlessly stable with 0 temp increase @600/900 & can be pushed even more ... & since im quite comfortable using these clocks I wanna try Bios modding them ... I followed the instructions some of the TG series guys use to extract the bios from the system bios & then edit it with RBE & then repackaging ... but I wanna know if someone did it & can confirm if it works because it detects the card & the clocks & the voltage and everything but it doesn't detect the card name & that scares the living heck out of me

EDIT: NVM I am quite the risk taker in an annoying way ... so I went on & did it anyway & the result is as you can see in the Sig :D

Make a bootable Flashdrive and update BIOS from DOS...safest way anyways.

New realtek sounddriver 2.60. Anyone has it and can tell if there are any improvements?

Refer to this post what may change is the system Bios name & the GPU bios name (HD5650=OPROM 00.ROM in my & mostly likely your bios)& in my case I didn't alter the DOS bios (PV50126.WPH) I altered the Windows x64 vercion flashing bios named "PV50126.exe" because I didn't have a ready USB stick so I flashed from windows & surprisingly it worked

But here comes the famous disclaimer ... Proceed at your own risk

sorry guys, I've been very busy these days, tonight I'll upload the photos.I change the thermal paste (artic ceramique) only down 3 degrees Celsius, (47 degrees for gpu) not using liquid thermal paste, the cooler surface is very bad. I put again my "old" processor core i5 430m is most cool than the core i7 620m.Attention be careful when removing the keyboard, is very weak.
On the issue of the bios I had the same problem, but the last update of acer.es, with the charged battery and administrator mode is installed properly on my acer 5740g, it's important step to step to oc the processor up to 3.48 ghz stable (look at the world league acer 5740g overclokers second in the ranking of oc)

(max temp supported core i5 430m 105 degrees celsius)
(max temp supportec ati hd 5650 92 degrees celsius

using CPUID Hardware monitor, my laptop's core 0 and core 2 stays a lot at 55-60 C , is this normal ?

my GPU stays at 54 C and my hard drive at 41 C..

It almost always spills out hot air... but the processor stays high temperature a lot

For the people playing dragon age origins and dragon age 2.i noticed big performance boost by turning off vsync from the in-game menu and forcing the v-sync on through a software called d3doverrider(its a component of rivatuner i think).i get much more smoother gameplay now. And also i noticed some slow downs in my game(dragon age origins) after 15 to 20mins of play.google told me that its cause of a memory leak which causes the game to use 100% of cpu after sometime. But actually i noticed this problem doesn't occur if you barr the game through firewall settings from using the internet. This solved my problems of slowdown in origins.now it works well at max settings. I've also noticed that turning vsync off in many games and forcing it on using d3doverrider gives better performance in other games too. I wonder why?

    Heya.
I had to reinstall windows-long story short: trojan.
Anyway, i tried to update the Video Card driver to 11.5
But funny enough, whehn u run DxDiag, it shows that my current version is 8.850? is this correct or am i having the wrong driver? I also installed driverchecker, and it said that indeed I am having the up-to-date Ati Driver, but that is 8.850 . So, is it meant to be like that? (PS. The last date shows 20/4/2011, so it seems like it is the most recent driver...)

I have a question about the heating of this laptop. I've had mine for almost a year now and have had only one problem with the HDD about 6 months back. The cooling has been very good until recently when I tried running Fable 3 on this laptop. I was really suprised to see the CPU temperatures hitting 95 degrees Celsius even though the GPU temps stayed around 80. I was wondering if I should be worried about this and take steps such as compressed air or new thermal paste. Thanks!

I believe with the arrival of summer has passed us all users the same, I play an hour at the witcher 2 and fable 3, whit temperatures 78-80 degrees Celsius, I change the artic silver thermal paste ceramique two weeks ago , one degree below the standard thermal paste.

with the program rw-everything, set in the 90x03 line to line 14 and 90x04 at 60 temperatures did not exceed 72 degrees at full load ... but the noise level is high

Heya guys, a Battlefield Bad Company 2 issue here:

When I play the game (online mainly, this may apply to the SP as well, but haven't bothered playing yet so don't know). anyway, I have some good FPS: 49-50. However, after 5-6 minutes after I join a server and start playing the game, I get a reduced FPS drops every ~20 seconds... Can't tell really. But after each ~20 seconds or so the framerate drops to 20-21 (feel's like I am playing with 17-18 though). Since BFBC2 is a fps after all, this is terrible and can't really play the game properly. Reducing the Graphics doesn't help at all, I mean, all I get is increased FPS ~60+ , but these drops never disappear. In fact, they feel harsher (as the drop is quite large).

I did install a program, Anivir, that has this cool tray property to check the performance of CPU, HDD, Battery, Memory and so forth. So I ran the game in windowed mode so that i could keep an eye on the different things. What I discovered was that whenever there was such a fps drop, the CPU Usage would go to 98-99%. Then the game would slow down(reduce the frames to a half or more), the CPU usage would go down to say 89-90% and the FrameRate would return to the max possible (depending on the graphics i set: 45-49). Then it would start building up again until it reaches 98-99% usage and so forth.

Now what causes this high usage? I mean, I do play other games, and it seems like it's only BFBC2 has this issue. I really can't say that i play anything else that HARD on my computer, but still: Far Cry 2 with high on everything, Street Fighter 4 Maxxed out. I even played crysis 2 with a steady 26FPS (it felt like it was 40, so no issue there). I also can't help feeling that there is absolutely no logical explanation for these drops. Even if I stay at one place, facing one direction, sooner or later I can check the FPS counter going from ~40 to ~20 for no apparent reason, then going back to ~40. With ~20 fps it's impossible to play. Absolutely.

My only best shot it: Since recently the laptop has started to reach higher and higher temperatures (it hits 96C pretty much on every big game, however, it's only BFBC2 i has the issue above), the CPU might be trying to compensate by reducing it's activity. That is what causes the drops. Then, 8-9 seconds after perhaps the overall CPU temps have fallen, the game returns to normal, until half a minute later it builds up temps/usage again and it starts stuttering.

Does this sound reasonable? Or is it something else? Anyone who had this issue with BFBC2? Or any other game? Also, cleaning the laptop: may this solve this issue (I haven't "cleaned" it or have it "cleaned" since I bought it almost one year ago). Note that the overall temperatures of the laptop, not only the CPU, but also the GPU and Hard disc i believe have increased.

Also, I took some time to investigate the problem: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1315790 Which of these suggestions and tweaks would help further improve the performance of the game (i really don't wanna mess too much with my BIOS settings, I don't know even if it is possible and advisable to do so, but this HPET in particular seems to be a real game-killer). Please, take your time to have a look and share your expert opinion on this.

Once again, thanks for your help! i know it turned out to be a big post (again), but I hope I'll get some ideas on what might be the problem with BFBC2...and eventually with any other games I might have similar problems with. Also, do tel which of the tweaks described in the link above are good.

    Thanks again!! :)

Increased CPU usage may be related to two things- one is an app that affects it (monitor process manager to see if anything apart from BFBC2 uses a lot of CPU power) or TubroBoost gets limited when you get above certain temperature- in essence making your CPU slower hence CPU usage goes up.

You can check the latter using an app that shows CPU frequency like RealTemp.

The other thing that was really CPU usage-ing was the PunkBuster. The figures were: ~57% usage BFBC2, ~27% Punkbuster, but Punkbuster is also used in FarCry 2 and I have no problem with it. Ill try this RealTemp and see what happens.

In addition to downloads suggestion, try monitor the CPU temp using ThrottleStop. Set it like this:-
    [IMG]
Play BC2 while ThrottleStop running in the background (in monitoring mode). When FPS drop, remember the time. You can check in the log file later. Probably the thermal compound already degraded hence the high CPU temp. BC2 uses a lot of CPU power. During my test sometimes it reached 80% with i5-450M. Probably among other games you played, the BC2 is the only one causing the CPU temp to reached throttle-ling threshold. The best solution is to re-apply the thermal compound. Use any good thermal compound such as IC Diamond 7 or Arctic MX-4.

I'm preparing to do a Windows reinstall on this laptop, and am in the process of downloading all the drivers. On here the Broadcom LAN driver is a couple of hundred kilobytes in size, yet on the Acer website it is nearly 70mb! Why is there such a massive difference in size? Thanks. :)

LAN drivers are tiny on their own- the one provided by Broadcom doesn't even have an installer- you have to install manually via device manager.
It would be a lot bigger if it had an installer, more files for more NICs etc.

I need some more explanation about the ThrottleStop thing.
It seems that it is able only to detect the current CPU usage and temperature. I really couldn't find this LOG file you referred to.
Also, you get only 80% CPU usage in BFBC2? are you sure? Because I pretty much hit the top there, and then the game enters into one might believe to be a "cooling mode", getting the FPS drop, as well as the usage.

Also i have only 4 rows of database, on the jpg. file you show there there are 8 in total. Do you adjust anyhting else in the settings?

On top of that, I somehow managed to block Punkbuster today. Although the performance got a little bit better without it, I still get these annoying framerate drops(as I said: from steady 40 frames to 21, which feels as if it's running with 10-15 frames).

Aaand, what I saw today reaaly scared me: the Throtstop showed: 97C 98C 98C 97C (on the 4 rows of info that I have) as max reached temperature. CPUID HwMonitor showed 96C on the two cores CPU, 95 on the GPU and 96 on the ACPI (what is that?). So yeah, general overheating, not only has the CPU temperature increased, but the temperature as a whole.

I am so sending this laptop for cleaning on Monday...

Also, you mention thermal paste. Can I tell the guys that are gonna clean it to apply such thermal paste, or I need to buy it additionally, and can't I really just clean my machine by myself? or...?

Still, thanks for the support! Really much appreciated! :)

I think you should clean the notebook yourself- no one will pay as much attention to the process of applying thermal paste and cleaning it as an owner himself.

The log file, " ThrottleStopLog.txt", is located in the throttleStop folder.
I use C0 value reported in ThrottleStop to determine the CPU load. C0 is a C State. CPU enter C0 when it working on a task. When you saw CPU load is 100%, it's probably the CPU already throttle down (enter passive cooling mode) the frequency because of the high temps. The CPU frequency is capped when in passive cooling mode. That's why you saw 100% CPU usage.
Do you mean cores? The screenshot was taken on my Dell (i7 quad-core). I'm playing BC2 on my Asus (i5-450M). Sorry for the confusion but what I got on my Asus can be use as a comparison, at least for the CPU.
I think better you re-apply the thermal compound yourself but if you really don't know how to do it properly, you can ask other people to do it for you. Just tell them to use the thermal compound you want. They will tell you whether they have them or not. Probably you'll need to buy the thermal compound separately.

Dont know if anyone noticed this, but the latest BIOS update (1.28) removed the annoying power on/off beep

All Core i5 CPUs will idle at roughly the same temperature in 5740G as all of them have the same low frequency and voltage (1.3GHz or so is the lowest clock). It would be somewhere in mid-40*C- can't tell for sure as it got quite hot over here...

What driver version are you using? Can anyone else confirm?

    Acer BIOS 1.28
    9.6MB 2011/04/12

Wow. I'm surprised that Acer has updated the BIOS for the 5740G after 1 year. The previous BIOS was from 2010/04/06.

I always thought that the annoying beeping sound was tied to the Realtek drivers, but if this is a final solution to this problem then this will surely make a lot of 5740G owners happy.

Looks like Acer is reading online customer complaints and is trying to improve their image/reputation.

Yeah I have to give it to them- while their policy is not to update drivers and I can understand that but at the same time they were always pretty good with BIOS updates.

Also they've proven that they listen to us complaining at least several times but for whatever reason no one reported on beep vanishing after 1.28 update until now.
