my 5740 g never seems to turn off its fan
it just runs very slow, but its still running, and its rly bugging me,
i even put a box under it to lift it up a bit so the fan holes are exposed, and it has better cooling, right now im only running google chrome and messenger, but who knows wut my background processes are, should i shut some background processes off?is my i3 heating up? is it something else?

    plz reply.

Correct me if im wrong, but i think it will never stop unless you use your laptop outdoors in the winter.Even with out any load the temperature is increasing too much so the fan kicks in but in low rpm.And how are you hearing it when its on lowest rpm i can't even hear it unless i put my ear to the fan holes. And as downloads always says,5740g has a very good cooling system so i don't think your cpu is overheating.I have i5 430m CPU and under load it reaches temperatures of about 85 degree(with a room temperature 25+).So unless you get temperatures of 90-95+ you have nothing to worry about.

Mine stops every once in a while but bottom line is- this laptop is so much cooler than many others because the fan works most of the time and doesn't let heat to accumulate. Otherwise laptop would get hot and fan would have to kick in at higher speed and that would be noisy.
If you want to play with it- link to the post on controlling fan speed is in second post of the thread.

thx i just downloaded the program, played around a little bit,but when i hold my acer in my lap,and it usually isnt at flat,i hold it in my lap at about almost 90 degree angle (laying on my sofa) thought that would be good to mention, and even if i try to avoid covering up the fan holes,it still gets pretty hot,and mostly at the letters g,h and v on the keyboard, isnt that where the hdd is located?

More or less- just use HWMonitor to give us all the relevant temps- HDD included. And check CPU load at idle- maybe something is using it.

thanks for the help, @downloads, it is for the 5750, but when i did searching on the forums for an owner's lounge for it, i couldn't find one. so i looked at the 5740, it looked similar, so i felt it was safe to ask. @everyone else, i am aware that the 5740 doesn't support sandy bridge, but the 5750 does, which was why i asked about the cpu slot. thanks again though, my brother will be pleased to hear about this.

Hey guys! Nice to see this thread is still going strong. Your doing a great job downloads(and everyone else ofcourse! :) )! Thanks alot man, I've found this thread very useful!

Now, I've had this laptop for just over 12 months now and the idle temp is around 80 degrees c. I'm getting a bit worried as this seems high ( outside temp is 22 degrees c). So i think i need to disassemble to clear out dust from the fan and/or apply thermal paste. I've got a copy of the 5738 service manual which gives detail how to take the case apart and it seems very complicated!!! with about 16 steps just to get to the fan. (Mine is the i3 model with the ati 5740, 4gb ram and a 320gb Hitachi hdd)

    Basically...

Is it possible to take the bottom off it and clean it out that way rather than taking the keyboard (and the rest) off?

And do i need to use an anti-static wrist band when doing this?

And what sort of screws are used? (i know im being lazy :p) Nevermind its a cross head.

    Thank guys!

No you can't take the bottom off. It won't come off at all until you remove all those screws that are beneath the keyboard.
Be patient and do it step by step- it's not very complicated.

hey guys i had earlier posted that i was having some problems with gaes like fifa 11. when i ran it as administrator the game works pretty smooth.but now i cant change the affinity or priority of its process through task manager.

my question: is there anyway to change affinity or priority of a process after u've switched its compatibility mode to "run as administrator"?? i get the access denied message

    EDIT: thank you.

downloads, I don't know if you seen my question or not, you may not be able to answer it and that's fine. I've got a bent pin on the LVDS connector (probably due to it coming loose and me reconnecting it, yea I know I should've taken a little bit more care.)

It's the part that connects to the motherboard (the male end). You have any idea where I can find a replacement?

Hi Guys! I have got my AS MX-2 TIM but I could not find any manual which explains how to apply it to exposed dies like those of notebook CPUs and GPUs. Can anybody explain how to apply it and which will be the best method?
One more question, Can I use Isopropyl Alcohol (or Acetone) to clean off the old thermal paste? Any other suggestions and tips are also welcome.

Yes, you can use Isopropyl Alcohol. A friend advice it to me but I didn't use it since I can't find the 91% one in any shop where I live. If you can get the 91%, it is better because it will evaporate faster. Will need a lot of patience when cleaning the old thermal paste. Use a lint free cloth or old T-shirt. In case some came in contact with pins, make sure to let it air dry. That is everything I remember.

Oh- if that's the case I think you should send it to Acer.
This part will be awfully hard to come by and it has no part number that we would know of as it's technically not a part but just a mobo component.

Did you try uninstalling the display driver from the device manager....?
It should show Standard VGA in the display adapters tab....then uninstall the standard VGA driver also....restart......windows will automatically install Standard VGA driver......restart......now install the latest one 11.6....

    Hello hello.

I have a few questions regarding the 5740G, which I have.

Firstly, is the monitor prone to physical damage and/or stuck/dead pixels? So far, in the course of a year since I've bought this computer, I've had now 2 points on my monitor that have suffered some sort of damage, even though I have been treating this laptop like it were baby Jesus himself. Could wiping the screen with moist cotton scratch it? One of the points seems to be a very very small impact crater, around 1.5 X 1.5 pixels in size. It's damage on the plastic of the screen, so not much I can do about that.

However, the second point is more interesting, and it seemed to happen today. There is a pixel, maybe 50-70 pixels away from the right side, that is slightly darker than normal. I spend maybe 2 minutes rubbing the spot with glasses lens cleaner and afterward with rubbing alcohol, and it didn't change. However, with a magnifying glass, when you look at the pixel and pixels around it, they're all uniformly the same color. It's only as you back away from the screen do you notice the slightly discolored (grey) pixel. I'm not sure if it is screen damage, like the first point, or if it's a "stuck" pixel, though it's grey and not R/G/B. Anyone familiar with this? Not knowing what is the problem is really, really vexing for someone with mild o.c.d., such as myself. I'm not necessarily looking for fixes, morelike answers to what is the problem.

My second question is regarding bios updates. At the moment I have v1.22 bios, and am trying to flash the new v1.28 that was just released, but I get a "Flash Bios Fail 0x4d0" error. Is there any workaround?

    Thanks for the responses.

First I would never use any glass cleaner on the screen...best is a mix of isopropyl alcohol with distilled water and a microfiber cloth...and never put the liquid on the screen, only on the cloth!

For the BIOS update I recommend doing it in pure DOS mode, make a bootable USB Flashdrive and update from there. Just google for instruction on how to do that. It's still the safest way and I never had a problem.

Guys I don't have a lint free cloth to clean off the old thermal paste with IPA. Can I use a good quality tissue paper instead?
And what about the application method of MX-2 on exposed dies. I can't find any manual regarding this.

Use an old cloth T-shirt. Tissue will just break apart on the old thermal paste.

If anybody interested, when cleaning old thermal paste, do not use paper towels as there are too many fibers and can tears. You can use a lint free cloth or an old T-shirt or paper coffee filters. I believe the shiny surface, like a mirror, on top of the processor is heat spreader. So technically the die is not exposed.

Its not a heatspreader as such and the term is misnomer. In both cases they are protective caps.

On desktop CPUs its to protect from pressure damage from heatsinks, in notebooks the exposed cores have their usual cap to prevent direct exposure.

It's your choice if you want to flash your BIOS or not. I usually do it when it's required or when updating to a new BIOS fixes a problem. Otherwise, I would leave it alone.

You can use Acronis True Image Home or similar software to make backup images of your partitions for your hard drive.

For the last comment, if you are talking about a corrupted BIOS then it will have nothing to do with your recovery partitions for your hard drive. You'll have to recover from the corrupted BIOS before you can even load the recovery partitions for your harddrive. It's hard to understand what you are trying to ask when you combine all your questions into one paragraph.

If your Windows 7 OS (operating system) is corrupted then yes, you can use a backup image program to restore your recovery partitions back to the hard drive. I do this all the time at work.

Sometimes, it's easier for people to understand what you are asking if you separate different questions into different paragraphs because I didn't know if you were talking about a corrupted OS or a corrupted BIOS when the questions were asked one after another in the same paragraph.

Hi guys. I have a question. Is there any way to "say" to my cooling fan when to start, when to stop and when to rise the rpm ? I'm asking because i switch to i720-qm and the temp's are with 10 degree up in idle and on full load are around the same....

Hey Guys, I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on trying cool my acer 5740g laptop as its impossible to play games when temperatures reach cpu and gpu 90C and above. GPU is not overclocked. I have a Zalman cooling mat and I've tried tweaking the fan to get better cooling but I'm still having issues. Any ideas?

Clean the vents using canned air (aka. gas-duster) and if that doesn't help you might want to disassemble the laptop clean it thoroughly and apply new thermal paste.

OK. I put an i7-720QM and the performance is great. But I have one little problem... now the cooling fan is working non stop on low speed because on idle the CPU is stay on 49-52 degree Celsius, so practically it will never stop until the temp lower to 42-45 degree. So, I'm asking - is that a problem for the fan or it's OK ? Under full load it keep around 80-85 degree with the GPU uder load (gaming). Under full load only of the CPU is around 80.

I don't think it's a problem for the fan but if you are worried you may just monitor e-bay auctions and buy a spare one whenever you see a cheap one.
Most of the time fans cost a lot more that they should but sometimes you can buy one for a few $.
I have had a fan that started rattling after a while and I had to replace it- that was because of the continuous use- it happens from time to time but it's a remote possibility.

I don't know... I'm wondering to leave it, or to sell it - Here where I live is very hot and I'm thinking to sell it and get i5-540m (560m)...

    @ka4o_pi4a

I would sell it. It's pretty much useless in gaming, most games don't use 4 cores so unless you do a lot of video decoding it's no better than a Core i5.

In case someone has doubts. Here you have a test on 2 core and 4 core Intel CPUs (Sandy Bridge but that makes no difference) in the same notebook.
    Part I & Part II.
