Yeah, 5942G is more expensive because it has eSata, Firewire, Bluetooth, fingerprint reader, IrDA, LED backlit keyboard and possibly Blu-Ray (not all may be available where you live but these are the options that 5942G has but 5740G doesn't) I agree it's not worth it but it's more of a premium model- you wanna a backlit keyboard. Pay up! ;)

It does support 8GB but will show 7,86GB (some memory seems to be reserved for the Intel integrated GPU- even though it is disabled at present).

I've seen someone have this problem but no solution so far. You do realize you don't have to install BIOS update one at a time- just the most recent one, right? Anyway- 1.22 updates VBIOS only so if you don't have any artifacts or other GPU related problems you may as well just skip it- I did.

Thanks for both replies, I inserted the battery and the update worked fine :D

@downloads, well I like to have the latest updates, I tried v1.22 before but it did not work, so I thought the had to be updated in order ;)

But I have another question, I still have the stock videocard drivers for the ATI Mobility Radeon 5650, when I go to the ati site, they tell me to look for new drivers on the acer website, but there are no updates. As this is my first time having a laptop, I don't want to screw it up trying to install the wrong drivers, So how can I update my drivers if it is at all posible, and could anyone point me to the right ones?

I really want to keep my drivers as uptodate as possible, I play Battlefield bad company 2 on this laptop, and there are some loading time problems, they made new drivers available for desktop cards, don't know if they have made them for the mobility cards yet.

Go to the main ATI website amd.com. Under "Download Drivers" on the main page. Choose graphics/Windows 7 64-bit edition/mobility radeon/mobility radeon HD 5000 series and click "view results". Then download the 10.3 drivers at the bottom of the page and install it.

This ain't gonna help. Fix for BF2 BC loading times for HD5xxx has been introduced in Cats 10.4 Preview- these are unavailable for notebooks yet.

No it will not. Only memory rating will increase which BTW doesn't mean anything because your system isn't going to be any faster.
WEI is just worthless- they have this rule that a system with less than 4GB RAM cannot score above 5.9 and since 5740G has 3.86GB usable...

Thanks for the reply, classy as may be, but 220Euro worth of connectivity is just not worth it for me =)

I'll probably miss the backlit keyboard though, nice addition indeed. I guess you can't get a backlit keyboard for 5740G ?

Basically none- unless you can make use of all 4GB you already have. Having more RAM doesn't help unless you use it and I don't see how could you.
Even if you could i.e. in a game it would kill (hog) your GPU long before you would be able to benefit from the additional RAM.

It should be but it's not. I already posted it here as someone requested it but WEI is useless.
The only advantage it has it's that it is simple and people don't have to consider different factors and think what is tested and how the score is computed.

Yeah but you probably don’t use 2xAA and AF they used- without these it should be smooth in high settings.

Aye, thanks for the quick reply, I understand now. However, wallet-wise, I cant justify added connectivity for 220Euro more.

On an anothernote, the backlit keyboard seems so nice addition, I'm wondering if it is available for the 5740G?

Also, do you guys have vinyl or something else as protective material for the back lid?

120hz monitor with 3D support. (Although, if you enable it, you're halving the GPU power going to your games since it has to render twice as many pixels.)

I'm wondering if anybody's been able to find a 5470g with core i5s and ATI 5650 card in Canada? I'm looking at the Canada Acer page (and checked all our online retailers)... only a Core i3 model...

    Click

So... I'm a bit confused right now. Not really into this model, but it looks bad how model out in the USA for 3+months now isn't here.

    EDIT:
Ha.. ha. I just searched thread and found out it's just discontinued here... Nevermind. Pages where it used to be for people who are curious: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=50106&vpn=LX.PMB02.257&manufacture=Acer and http://www.pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=25544

I think you should consider the 5741G model, its more innovativ in terms of design and more thin than 5740G and it comes with NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 320M with 1024 MB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM... :D

Make sure you insert battery first and run with charger. Then extract the file and Run "Flash.bat" to flash BIOS in pure DOS or Windows x86/x64 OS environment.... :D :D

    Hi.

Bought this wonderful laptop too. Best laptop i've ever touched :D

But i can't seem to find anywhere the latest ati 5650 driver. Acer site had 2009 version which i think is outdated.

I'm just annoyed because when i play Stalker. It plays supersmooth in both Maximum and Lowest settings but in both settings i get ingame freeze that lasts 1-2seconds and presents after about every 30 seconds.

And my down arrow doesn't work as sensitive as other keys and sometimes doesn't work at all.

Can anyone help me out :) ?
    Thanks

Go for the i3 +HD5650 model. The CPU is not a lot slower but not that much that it would limit the GPU. You would be better off with HD5650 than with GT330M not to mention GT320M even if the latter were paired with a much faster CPU. Core i3 is not low-end. It may seem so but in fact it's on pair with faster Core 2 Duos.
EDIT: Sorry- I see there are no Core i3 + HD5650 on Acer Canada www :/
From Catalyst 10.3 onwards AMD supports Mobility Radeon. Here's a link to Cats 10.3

Anyone else frequently hear what seems to be the harddrive being accessed? Even if I'm not doing anything on the computer every 30 seconds to a minute or so I hear the HDD being accessed, at least that's what I think it is. Is this normal?

You may not be doing anything but windows will, plus the sound may actually be the opposite of what you think it is- it may be the sound of head going to landing position when disc is not used for certain time (SMART attribute 193 Load Cycle Count)
    Nothing to worry about.

ok, i wanna buy this acer laptop, but my main question is:

How is the build quality of this laptop? I would like to own this laptop for about 3-4 years for college. I wouldn't be moving around with it too much either, and i plan on taking really good care of it. Im just concerned because people just diss on the acer quality all the time, and I have to know how people's experiences are with this model.

Thank you for any answers to this!

Acer's quality isn't that bad like people make it to be. I think my 5740g is built quite well and I don't see any loose hinges or anything like that. I think it's all about receiving an error-free notebook through UPS. Most of the computer parts come from the same manufacture anyways and companies like Acer, Sony, Toshiba, etc. just brand their names on the notebooks. Also, all companies tend to have a bad lemon here and there. Just RMA it if you have any problems.

Switchable graphics based on GPU embedded in Core i5 is not enabled in any laptop as far as I'm know. It will not work unless it is supported by drivers for the discrete GPU. ATI Catalyst 10.5 beta and 10.6 alpha contain Intel drivers and some settings for switchable graphics- possibly when ATI (nVidia too for their GPUs) finishes the job we may get a BIOS update enabling switchable graphics.

Why don't you use the recovery partition- you don't need backup DVDs to do so (not to mention there are 3 DVDs- not one) ALT+F10 at boot should launch it (if it's enabled in BIOS)

4 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, 56K modem :D and VGA out.
    No Express Card slot.

Aspire 5942G has eSATA, Express Card and FireWire but it's quite more expensive.
I wouldn't hope for anything smaller than 15" and equipped with decent gaming card. Even Asus n61 series with HD 5730 is 16".

Hi, i have some issues after installing this driver. Everytime i login, there is a prompt asking me if i would like to run the file "SynTPHelper.exe" by Synaptics Incorporated. If i say no, my touch pad doesnt allow to me scroll or do anything. This is annoying as everytime i login, i am welcomed with this message prompt. Could someone help me with this problem? Before the update i had no problems.

This file has to be running in both driver versions.
What prompts you about that file?
The easy way would be to fully uninstall the driver, reboot and install again.
I'm using this version with no problems

I however have another question. One of the updates you had mentioned in the second post ....i am unable to install the download "k57_vista_2k8_x64-14.0.0.7". I am unable to find the correct application to run one of the 3 files. Could you downloads help me with this one?

That is because you need to install it manually. Go to device manager, network cards, find Broadcom NetLink, driver tab, update driver and navigate to where you have extracted the archive with these three files.
It saves bandwidth if you don't use an installer so Broadcom and Realtek (among others) provide just the files for manual update- only for less complicated updates though.

You people dont need to update all the drivers. You are only asking for trouble. If it works, dont fix it! IMO ati display drivers are the only ones worth updating.

See what happens if you switch it off.
Did you update BIOS to at least 1.16?
Unplug it for a while to let it drain some more and then plug it back again.
And try a different wall socket (I know it seems impossible but I've seen in happening, so just try another one ;) )

    Currently I used BIOS 1.22....
I also had update my ATi Catalyst to 10.6 Alpha, is this causing this problem???

I don't think it's caused by ATI drivers- it's very unlikely or even impossible.
