I just have one more question about this laptop. Has anyone experienced short one second pauses during gaming sessions? The games run fine with good frame-rate, but the laptop occasionally freezes for a second or two and then jumps ahead to normal again.

It's either the CPU throttling or the GPU using ATI PowerPlay. It happens to me every once in awhile, but not consistently enough to annoy me. At least I know my computer is cool and not on the verge of meltdown.

It happens to me playing WoW too. I've tried everything to alleviate it, but I can't seem to pinpoint the cause or how to rectify it.

I have the same problem with some games. Constant pauses during the game.
Is there any fix for it ?

I haven't found a fix for it, but updating the SATA/AHCI drivers seem to help a little bit. Can't really say much else has helped...I've tried everything I can think of.

It's probably neither not with these temperatures anyway (not every laptop is Aspire 6920G you know ;) )
Did you guys try both BIOS update and driver updates?
I've finished GTA IV yesterday and haven't experienced anything like this but it's hard to pinpoint- another thing causing it may be i.e. sound driver.

I've updated the BIOS, SATA/AHCI, chipset, NIC and Wifi, and of course the video card. I tried to update the sound driver but I'm not sure I was successful because the update requires a restart and every time I restart I think that windows installs the old driver before I can run the driver setup again to finish. I tried deleting the older driver software via the device manager, so maybe I do have the new driver, but I'm not sure.

I still think it has to do with the HDD, but I can't really back that up with more than a hunch.

If it's not the CPU throttling and the GPU using ATI PowerPlay, I wonder what it is. I also have the 1.22 BIOS update, ATI Mobility HD 10.3 drivers, and the most recent driver updates you posted on the first page. However, I'm using Windows 7 default sound drivers since I wanted to get rid of the annoying beep when you plug in or unplug the power adapter.

Basically, in Counter-Strike: Source it would freeze for like 2-3 seconds (stuck in motion) and then go back to normal. I know it's not the wireless card because this happens to me in Dragon Age: Origins too and it's a single player game.

Try the Realtek sound driver- what you are using is a generic MS driver for all HD Audio codecs- not the best thing in town.
Does it happen with Wi-Fi disabled too? I don’t mean single player but rather do you have Wi-Fi on while playing (also in single player)?

Do you know how to disable the beep sound when you plug in or unplug the power adapter without using generic drivers (disabling "beep" in device manager didn't work for me with Realtek drivers installed)? I'm a university student and having that beep sound really distracts the professor/students in class.

I haven't tried Dragon Age: Origins with wifi off. I'll test it out and see if it still freezes.

    *Update*
Dragon Age: Origins still freezes with wifi off. I just played for 5 minutes and it froze for 2-3 seconds again. I can live with the freezes every once in a while, but if there a solution to solve it. I'm all for it.

It looks like disabling the beep is impossible. Test Realtek drivers anyway- if they solve your problem consider what's better for you- disabling sound (Fn+F8) for classes or keeping the generic driver without the beep.
At least we would know if this is the problem.

Please let us know if updating the Realtek drivers solves the freezing problem...I know it's a long shot but it'd be great to put this issue to rest.

The AC beep is not possible to disable, Acer add it as a warning. I don't know why, its not hard to notice that the cable has came out, considering your screen goes more dim, the power icon changes and of course, the cable isn't plugged in.

You can stop it though by using a different HD driver though, I use the Microsoft driver and I don't get the beep. Though I don't have the built in features that would come with the notebook drivers, like the surround sound feature. but who cares about that, the beep is gone!

If it were me, I'd maybe look for an update for your graphics card driver. Possibly try to get an update on your DirectX or OpenGL, depending on which one you use for that game.

It looks like it may be game-related. I did a quick search and Dragon Age: Origins seems to be known to have problems like these. There was (is?) a problem with freezing caused by ATI driver 9.9 that was supposed to be fixed (I don't know if it was) in more recent driver.
It's also said that this game may not exactly "like" multi-core CPUs- and keep in mind that Core i5 has 2 virtual cores due to hyper threading.
Proposed solutions are to disable sound entirely to test if it's caused by sound driver and test via process manager if setting the game to use less cores resolves the issue (try to make it run on two or on one)
These solutions are for testing only obviously (unless the game runs smooth with one or two cores with good performance that is) but testing these would help to pin-point the problem.

On another note- I suspect it's a game/driver problem because I've finished several demanding games on this notebook including Crysis Demo (1.8GB of download worth about 15-30min of gameplay  ) and GTA IV. I've also tested GTA Lost and Damned for an hour or so no problems so far.

Can we list all games that you guys have problems with? Plus if you do have problems with some games and don't have it with another ones mention those running fine too. Please mention when multiplayer is concerned.
Do you use antivirus software while playing and what AV is it?

EDIT: Be sure to add driver versions for sound and video drivers as displayed in device manager (to avoid packaging numbers instead of real version numbers) and BIOS version. Mention your GPU (5650 or 5470) too. Thanks.

I have the freezing problem with WoW, so it is always multiplayer. Here are my driver versions from the device manager:

    BIOS version - 1.22

    Radeon HD 5650 - 8.712.0.0

    Realtek HD Audio - 6.0.1.5969

I use MSE for my antivirus protection, but I turn off real-time protection whenever I start a game. Lemme know if you need any more info.

I have been playing another game called Plain Sight in order to review it. It is 3D and multiplayer only just like WoW, but I don't get the freezing when I play it.

Thanks. It would be nice if everyone kept the same format as Osiyo.

    Mine would be:

    BIOS version - 1.16

    Radeon HD 5650 - 8.712.0.0

    Realtek HD Audio - 6.0.1.6083

AV is NOD32 v4 and v4.2 real-time protection also disabled for gaming.

    No problems with:
GTA IV, GTA IV Liberty City Stories, Crysis Demo, GTR Evolution, White Gold War in Paradise- all single player.

Here you are. It's the first and last time I’m testing this card without OC though- it's not what I bought it for.

    Default clocks:

    3DMark06 @ 1366x768
    3DMark Score: 7018
    SM2.0 Score: 2555
    SM3.0 Score: 3134
    CPU Score: 2613

Overclocked to 670/900(that's how I use it)

    3DMark06 @ 1366x768
    3DMark Score: 8182
    SM2.0 Score: 3078
    SM3.0 Score: 3770
    CPU Score: 2618

Crysis test with screenshot is provided in the first post of the thread (OCed only though). I cannot retest it as I've already uninstalled the demo and I don't intent to download 1.8GB again. That said- sth is wrong with the test scores you provided- I've managed 30fps with high settings.

It's almost the same. He did sth wrong with Crysis test- that's all.
CPU is not that much faster either because Core i7-620m has 2 cores (and 4 threads) just like Core i5 430M does. Core i7-620m is faster mainly due to higher clock. If you are considering one of these notebooks for gaming you need to take a look at the cooling system too- if you can't overclock the GPU in Timeline X or can't keep it cool enough- it's not worth it. If you can it all depends on the price.

    Hi all.

Needing a little help with my new Aspire 5740G, but a complete novice when it comes to specs and speeds etc.

Basically, I recently bought i5 430M version with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD5470 graphics card and have had a couple of problems.

The first is one already experienced by a few peeps it seems, namely periodic pauses gameplay whilst gaming (in my case World of Warcraft). Granted, I would love to know how to rectify this but no real biggie.

The second issue is the one that is concerning me. In short, I bought the machine a couple of weeks ago and within a week of use it had started blue screening randomly (sometimes gaming, sometimes browsing, sometimes just idling). Basically it would throw a wobbly, the screen would go like a TV that isn't tuned properly (black and white pixel mush) and then it would reboot - taking me through to start windows/start windows in safe mode etc. Long story short, I was concerned that I had bought a dodgy machine so I took it back to the store 2 days ago and they replaced it with the same machine agreeing that the graphics card was most probably "faulty". So I get the new machine home, it's been fine for 2 days and then I load up WoW to play today and 20 mins in, the new machine throws a wobbly too. In this case, no pixel mush, just a black screen, a funky strangulated sound and an unceremonious reboot. Granted, this is the first time it's happened but if there's something I can do to work out how to fix what is clearly an issue, I would be extremely grateful.

Not sure if the dump info is of any use (might as well be in Swahili for me), but it's below for you tech wizards :D Thanks in advance guys!

The old one was probably faulty, this one however seems to be WoW related issue. I've been browsing through Blizzard support and came across a few things concerning ATI cards.
First of all update your ATI drivers and Realtek sound drivers- from respective support sites, then go to Catalyst Control Center and disable Catalyst A.I. (recommendation from Blizzard website- not mine). Also update Wi-Fi drivers (or Broadcom if you play through Ethernet connection)
You can also consider BIOS update to 1.22 as it updates ATI VBIOS.
I assume you have the latest patch for WoW.

It would also help if you tested some other games to ensure that this is a WoW-exclusive issue. If none of the above helps and the problem occures only in WoW- go to Blizzard support forum, if not- then we gotta solve ourselves.

Ok. Thanks for the quick response and initial suggestions - will get onto these now. I have the latest WoW patch so should be up-to-date there. Not really an avid gamer, but think have a copy of Fallout 3 kicking around somewhere which I'll try.

    Thanks again

also once you've done what downloads has suggested try using the blizzard repair tool, i had a similar issue where it was because of a corrupted file and would give me the fatal exception.

try defragmenting your gamefiles this may help you as it sounds like a filesystem access "hiccup", but could be also a system process/program that is higher on the priority list in windows..worth a check in any case.

Don't worry Needafix, you're not the only one with the WoW problem. I have a thread on Blizzard's support forums, but so far there has been no response from Blizzard techs.

In the mean time I need to try playing L4D 2 and see if I get the pauses in that game too.

I'm wondering how much does your win 7 use ram?

Mine uses 1.40GB of Ram when nothing really works (exept browser with 1 tab).
And Cpu usage is 6~10% when idling.
Ohh what do i got wrong?

Nothing. You could disable some useless Windows services, remove things you don't need from startup and you would be able to achieve 900MB-1GB used at startup with only AV and firewall running.
CPU usage does not refer to full clock- it's 6-10% of CPU at its current speed meaning 1330MHz when it's doing nothing- at least I think it's this way. ;) Anyway- nothing to worry about. You can however tweak Windows a bit to use less RAM if you want to.

why not just go back and say it wont start and you are not happy with the machine and that it has dead pixels and other issues? having a dead os would go a long ways to showing that the machine is indeed dead? ;)

i dont understand? to exchange the pc you need to have the original OS, and recovery partition? where are you returning this?

Be it retailer exchange, RMA, or w/e, never had i an issue with exchange if the hard drive was wiped/changed/deleted/screwed even if the os and all partitions were gone. thats why i said what i did because a dead system makes for a faster exchange in my each and every experience. Never has tech support, retail customer service, or even salesperson ever told me "oh sir we can't take it back if it doesn't start, we need to verify it still has the original operating system AND recovery partition"

Why cant you contact Acer and ask for a windows 7 disc? They usually only charge for shipping cost. Some of my friends have managed to get the manufacturer specific installation disc for Windows without much fuss.

Since you have the product key you will be able to install it.

"to exchange the pc you need to have the original OS, and recovery partition?"
YES..ITS stup*d But YEs.... they don't change it.. you can check on the warranty papers..

"having a dead OS would go a long ways to showing that the machine is indeed dead"
This don't work for one thing.. if you press ALT+ F10 ( don't have sure) the system enter in thr recovery mode automaticaly.. and it's the first thing that in the FNAC they do..put the sistem in the original way to send to ACER.

    audiphile76

Yesterday i phoned to ACER to ask that... they send me in few days.. BUT the problem it's that the CD don't make the recovery partition..only restore the operating system...:S not usefull, dont resolve.

My unique change of changing the ACER ASPIRE 5740G it's to have a image of all the disc... restoring in my pc..change the windows serial to mine and give it back on the FNAC..:S

I ask again.. it some one could send me a copy of all the dis (with acronis tru image for example( i can send the program)) WILL SAVE MY LIFE
could be the i5 or the i7.

    thanks for all the answers

vwwv, I'm very sorry you are going through this problem with your laptop.

To test my theory, I called acer tech support (canada) myself told them my unit was experiencing problems with boot-up and that i was trying to recover via recovery partition (i didn't know we were supposed to make recovery discs ;), and i was following all the troubleshooting steps of the technician (pretending to at least) i told him that nothing was happening and that i would pull out the hd and check the drive via external on another computer, i emailed the technician back and told him that the drive looked like it was somehow formatted and i lost all data in all partitions(this is the part where i would take a magnet to the hdd :p) he went on to say that a virus probably infected my computer and wiped my drive

he called me back(instead of emailing! good work acer tech!) and said that he would get my unit sent back for an rma to be tested and reset back to factory default. I talked to him further and asked him if i was to just reformat and reinstall win7 myself if that would void warranty, and he replied to me that no it wouldn't i told him that i really needed the laptop for work and at this time i couldn't wait a week or more for an rma. I stated that i would not send it back for an rma and would just reinstall win7 myself.

He went on to say that it could also be due to HDD failure/error of some type or even other hardware failure and that further testing at acer would find if this was the case, i asked him if if it indeed failed later (but within the warranty period) if i could send it back then and he said yes.

Not sure who and which region, you are dealing with at acer but i would call global HQ with a complaint with how they are treating you.

later this week i'll see if i can get acer to replace the "faulty" lcd ;)

mk1freak THANKS a lot for your answer..

I bought the pc at FNAC in portugal.. and the warranty it's given by Fnac..not by ACER.. ACER only change if the laptop have at lest FIVE PIXELS!
If you buy on FNAC, Fnac change with only one pixel..( a FNAC pack with ACER) AND i only have more five days, i don't have time to send to ACER..:S :S

IF some one coul send me just the image os the partition, i think it will help-me (to don't send the operating system with files etc).. I have a fast FTP server here a very lovely people cant put the recovery drive ='( I think it's the only way

For those who had freezing problems while playing games. Did yall install the Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology 9.6.0.1014 drivers? I uninstalled that and used the Acer default drivers for the 5740G. I since then haven't had that many freezes while playing Counter-Strike: Source or Dragon Age: Origins.

I mostly agree- I wanted to post it yesterday for someone to test but forgot to do so
The problem doesn't seem to be the AHCI driver but the fact that Intel adds processes and services to monitor drive status. It seems that the sound distortion is caused by one of these services accessing SMART status of the drive (which it does periodically). The same thing happens when you play music then launch HD Tune and access health tab which also show SMART status.
Instead of removing Intel software altogether (you would lose a new SATA AHCI driver) disable IAStorIcon.exe from startup (uncheck it in msconfog) and stop all Intel services from launching with the system- possibly three of those (do it via administrative tools/services)

The problem is- it's not 30min. The recovery partition is 12,7GB and uploading that would take more than 3 days in my case (that would be non-stop at max speed- something I can't do)

I thought about that but there are two problems- one- DVDs will not make it in time for you due to volcano-cloud related problems.
Both regular post and messenger services are I trouble now- everything has to go by truck and postal services are late as hell.
Two- I'm not sure if the DVDs are multilanguage.
