Well of course it will slow down your PC.Heavy HDD activity always slows down a PC.And transferring big files or many small ones is very HDD heavy task,so your HDD can't keep up with the transfer and the other tasks you want to do while the transfer is in progress. There is nothing much you can do except to get a faster HDD or get an SSD.

Windows is not accurate with this. Use TeraCopy- it's not only faster but checks CRC of each file and reports real speed.

It's not all about the speed of the transfer. It depends how many I/O operations(this means how many read/write requests the HDD gets) happen at the same time.HDDs cant handle many I/O operations at the same time. This means that when there are multiple programs/services and stuff that currently use the HDD at the same time the HDD can't handle all the HDD requests fast enough,so some of the requests will be put on queue and will wait for the HDD to process the previous request before it gets back to the next one and so on.That is why you get the slowness. For example if program(by program i mean anything that uses HDD) A requests data from the HDD and program B also requests data from the HDD at the same time, but from another part of the HDD platter, the HDD can't process both requests fast enough. That is because in the first spin it gets the data for program A,but the data needed to program B is far from the current position of the HDD read/write head,so the HDD has to do another spin to get to the next part where is the data for program B.That is why you get slowness. And that is why a faster RPM HDD will help a bit,but not as much as we would want.On the other hand SSDs don't have spinning platters so they don't have this problem and can handle like 40k+ I/O operations at the same time. The problem with SSDs is the high prices and low capacity. So not much you can do unless we see some breakthrough in HDD technology anytime soon.

I am having hibernation issues with my laptop. When I tell it to hibernate, screen turns off, power button and wireless button light goes out. The power light (bellow trackpad) goes from blue to orange. The button that turns off the trackpad stays on and the fan is still running.

The busy light is still lit up and so is the caps lock light.

    Sleep works fine.

    Anyone have this issues?

All of the things you said are normal. When the power light turns from blue to orange it means that your sessions data is being written to the HDD(what hibernation does so you can continue from where you left off) and when its done it shuts down completely.Did you wait a bit for it to shut down or you are saying that it stays with orange light and nothing happens?

    Hi all,

I have something strange. When I bought new HDD from Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB, replace the old HDD.

When I use new HDD, my laptop always crash and I have to restart laptop by pressing power button. I decide to re-install Windows, when I finish to format HDD to install new Windows, I can not install Windows. Setup can crash, or throw error message. But I replace old HDD again, laptop work smoothly, and I place new HDD to another Laptop, surprise! new HDD work smoothly, can install Windows successfully, run without crash.

Is there anything not compatible between Laptop Acer 5740G and WD black?
My laptop use bios version 1.22

It should be possible but you'll have to do some modding (see 3820TG thread for details)

Back to this issue. I've tested Cats 12.8 and 12.9 beta and overclocking with Sapphire TRIXX, MSI Afterburner and AMD GPU Clock.
This issue is present with all of the above in some cases only when you restore to default clocks in others even when you OC.
Something must have changed inside drivers themselves.

Also- my proposed solution of typing 100/150 instead of using "reset clocks" is not a good one. It does work properly with no blinking lights however it crashes the driver sooner or later if you're watching flash video inside the browser. The reason being- if you "reset to default" and start watching a flash clip clocks will jump up to 550/750 (hardware acceleration) however if you type manually 100/150 clocks will stay at these values which are too low for hardware accelerated video- hence the crash.

So far I haven't been able to come up with anything. Admittedly I haven't tried too much but that's a bit annoying so we should probably try to find a solution.

I have a solution to that problem and i think i posted it some time back. The solution is to turn Aero off and then back on.I do this the easy way-by starting a movie with BSPlayer :D Not sure what is the actual cause, but this is the best workaround i found. That is why your issue goes away when you hibernate/un-hibernate.I have had this issue ever since i started overclocking too.And i changed few driver versions too with same results. So anyone more tech savvy can try to find the actual cause.

I doubt you would have the same problem since your clocks are not technically overclocked (just changed) and require no resetting to default value.
Powerplay will automatically lower clock values when you're finished gaming whereas with AMD GPU Clock you need to reset them manually (and that's causing problems somehow).

Indeed.I had no blinking lines at all when i overclock or while i game with with OC.THe problem occurs only when you reset back to stock clocks. Then something messes up.I tried messing around with MSI Afterburner settings to allow or not powerplay while OCed and enabling/disabling powerplay alltogether from CC with variable results, but at the end i always got those lines at some point before i undo OC and couldn't figure out what exactly is the problem.

Hello there, good people of this forum. My Acer Aspire 5740G laptop's screen cracked and I need to switch it out. I've done some checking and I have pretty much narrowed my choice down to a specific matrix, but I'd like to hear your opinion first just so I don't make the wrong purchase. The matrix model is "B156XW02". I checked it out and it seems to be compatible with 5740-5255, 5740-5513 models. The backlight seems to be of the same type as well as the resolution (1366x768 HD also known as WXGA HD, although I saw it referred to as WXGA+ in some places). Can anyone help me verify that this is the right one? I'd very much appreciate it. Thank you :)

So it doesn't matter that your model has a v2 at the end? It may be a shot in the dark, but is that the difference between the glossy and matte versions of the screens by any chance?

    Hi Guys,
I've owned this notebook 5740G since 2010 & apart from a problem with the memory modules early on it's been a pleasure to use.
I have upgraded to a SSD hard drive & maxed out the memory to 8 gig .
This week i also replaced the keyboard as some of the keys were very sticky & the esc key was not working at all.
So i bought a 'knockoff' keyboard from ebay which incidentally has a better feel on the keys the the oem acer.
Fitting took all of 10 minutes as i got the intructions from youtube on a similar model acer.
Overall i'm very satisfied with the 5740g &it even plays Battlefield 3 well on medium settings.

    Cheers

Hey, downloads. Me again with another screen question. I've noticed that the difference between B156XW02 and B156XW02 v2 is the h/w value, which is 0a for v0 and 4a for v2. Do you know what that means or what it's for? I was looking high and low, but I couldn't really find anyone explaining this or even what it stands for. My guess is it has something to do with resolution, but both screens are still WXGA (1366x766) so I have no idea what to make of this. Some help would be greatly appreciated.

I see nothing important in the specs apart from the fact that V0 had better luminescence value than V2 by 10%.
I see no reason why it wouldn't work fine in your laptop.

    hi there people.

i own this laptop for 2 years now without any major problems.

So now that the warranty is over, i want to make some upgrades to the laptop and also clean it and change the thermal paste since its getting hotter everyday.

I already bought a intel 330 ssd 120g an arctic coolling mx-4 to change.
but i have some questions now:

I see some core i7 for sale on ebay, can the 5740g support this? i was thinking about the 720gm. what is the most powerfull cpu that this laptop supports?
Can you please tell which odd caddy to buy? ( i see lots of different ones on ebay) please provide me some link.
i already have 8gb of ram, but since i use lots of virtual machines and lots of browser tabs i want to upgrade to 16gb, does it support?

    thanks in advance.

hello, the most powerful processor for acer 5740g is i7 940 extreme, but it is very difficult to cool.
the i7 820QM cost me a lot of work that does not exceed 90 degrees, I do not recommend ...(i7 720qm works fine but is hot betwen 43-89)
    best options is i7 640m and i5 560m or 580m
    Only support 8gb of ram

WEI has nothing do to with any performance gain.
There are proper benchmarks to measure HDD performance- not silly Microsoft set of numbers.

Ignore it- you bought a faster drive& it's gonna be faster.

    Hi
    First post.
I've had the Aspire 5740G for nearly 18 months now with 6G of RAM installed and whist its OK the thing that I don't like is the keyboard, I always seem to be missing keys !
Is it possible to change the keyboard to a punched through keyboard as used on Sony and Apple laptops? I know its simple to remove and replace a keyboard but would changing keyboard style be possible and do Acer offer such a keyboard style?
Thanks in advance for your help.

What you want to do is impossible. You could replace a keyboard with another one of the same type- (not necessarily identical) but not with a chiclet one.

Thanks for your quick reply, even if its not what I was hoping to hear !

Do Acer not do a chiclet keyboard or is there another reason why it's impossible?

    Cheers, N

Chiclet keyboard is a part of the design. Uppercase (that 5740G has under the keyboard) is perforated with holes meant for chiclet keyboard.
So you remove the uppercase and then the keyboard from beneath it.

Hey everyone, I have an acer aspire 5740g which has worked perfectly for over 2 years now but lately it is showing some weird symptoms. While turning on the laptop, it beeps continuously for around 5 seconds before the windows loading page and then boots fine. Also during operation, the touchpad sometimes becomes inactive for around 5 seconds, i can't move the pointer at all. But the keyboard and other operations work fine during that time. I think the beeping has something to do with touchpad as when the touchpad becomes inactive, i can't use the touchpad left and right click buttons or the lock button no matter how many times i press it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the links. I haven't tried installing them so I didn't notice. I was testing Cats 12.11 beta instead.
    I've replaced the links now.
