@Starsay, What resolution did you bench in to get 9681 for 3DMark06? I also wonder why you have an i7 720QM on a AS574g. Is your GPU a 5650M?

Hi,I pass the 3dmark 2006 with the default settings (1280x768), catalyst default settings.
I Change three times the processor, the first i7 620m (for me the best option), i5 560 works well and now I'm with i7 720QM,too hot, cost me a lot of work that did not pass its maximum temperature of 85 degrees celsius, I change the heatsink, fan and thermal paste 10 times... now it works fine ...
I have a hd 5650 overclocking, I use shapphire trixx tweak utility 4.3,and set the core speed to 715mhz, is the maximum for me, and memo 1090mhz, (for prolonged use 715/980) with ati tool i check the artifacts and use hw monitor for monitor the temps.

@Starsay, Did you do any voltage mod on your hd 5650? You have a very good overclock for GPU. I would like to know what you would score in 3DMark 2006 for (1280x1024) res settings.

Hey guys. I am using 5740g for a few years and it works fine. I decided to update my video drivers, so i downloaded 12-4 mobility drivers, uinstalled old ones, installed new ones but... They did not work. I uninstalled ALL old video drivers and installed all new ones but it just doesnt work, resulotion is only 800x600 and CCC cant even open (it says drivers are not properly installed or something like that). At end of instalation of new drivers it says everything is fine but there were problem with sound HDMI driver (?). Grafical driver was installed fine and it still doesnt work... Any ideas what could help? Thanks very much for every answer!

the reason is simple your 720qm is 45nm technology which came out in 2007 and yours is a revised version in 2010 while the 620m and 560m are 32nm which for mobile came out at the start of 2010. Basically a 720qm is a dumb cpu hence why it has a 45w tdp with no igpu while the 620m and 560m have its only igpu at 35w tdp. Reality is these without igpu would be a 25w cpu like a 620m or 560m and the 720qm is a 45w cpu and performs like similar to a 620m.

My laptop technology is more advanced as the qx9300 shows or q9000 and the 45nm i7's were less advanced desktop and laptop. They just increased the power consumption to complete with the core 2 duos and quads hence why the i7's performed worse performance per watt then core 2 quads.

    @MartanCJ

In future don't uninstall old drivers- just update them unless you encounter any issues.
Try installing default drivers from Acer Support site and update those to the most recent one.
There was also another driver that people used for this process but I can't remember which one was it.

    @narthex

MSAA or whatever it was called turned out to be less efficient than normal AA but new drivers contain bug fixes and optimizations for games so it's probably worth updating them.

They changed the way drivers are going to be released from now on.
It's going to be done nVidia style- once they have something interesting to release which means not on a monthly basis anymore.

I don't like the idea but hey...

<strike>I'm gonna update driver links in a minute.</strike>

    EDIT: Links updated.

With the previous drivers I got 1278 score (clock 700/920)

I noticed some flickering too after overclocking and running the 3D benchmark test. A reboot fixed this...but still...not ideal!

Apparently Cats 12.6 are not even supposed to improve performance. It was a bug-fixing edition.
Next driver release 12.7 (currently in beta stage) is a performance enhancing one although it's meant to improve performance on HD 7700, HD 7800 and HD 7900 series not on HD5000.

EDIT: Cats 12.7 beta give me exactly the same score of 1279

    Help!!!

New to forums. Couldn't see how to post new topic. I have a 2 yr old acer aspire 5740g-6979 laotop. No probs until recently screen stays white on startup, or wakeup. It does not go through startup to windows welcome screen. Cpu seems to be running as computer heats up but does not post or continue to windows. At first this sometimes passed and it proceeded to windows, then it didn't. For a while a restart with battery removed restarted the notebook. Now it remains frozen. Any help would be appreciated.

Remove RAM sticks one by one trying each one in each slot.
Then remove the HDD and try to boot from a USB pendrive to Ubuntu or something like that.
That would allow you to rule out HDD and RAM as possible culprits.

    Hey guys

Is there any trick to updating the sound drivers? I download the latest ones, it first uninstalls the current drivers but then as soon as I boot it re-installs the old drivers.

    How do I fix this?

It looks like my graphics chip isn't working properly (Radeon). There are strange pixels everywhere on screen, which gets worse as the machine is in use. When I disable the graphics chip and let the computer run on the standard windows graphics driver I do not have problems, but the resolution is awful. Does anyone know how I might be able to enable the onboard graphics chip and use that, as that will probably be fine for my needs.

Looks like I'm stuck with low resolution, unless anyone's got any ideas why my display keeps showing lots of strange pixels everywhere. The latest catalyst drivers don't work for me - the process stops midway through loading, so the latest driver I have is the one from windows update. I haven't updated the bios - so could try that but I'm not sure why that would make a difference. Any ideas?

Uninstall everything from ATI, reboot...use driver sweeper (free program) and clean up the rest from ATI. In Device manager, remove the video adapter (windows will load VGA driver) , reboot and wait until windows detects your display and loads the generic drivers....now try again to install the latest ATI drivers 12.6.

    That's a very popular model- assuming you have a 5740G (non G might use 60W PSU) it's 90W (19V, 4.74A).
There are loads of those on eBay for $10-15.

    Hi
After 2.5 year I started to experience problems with my 5740g with ATI5650. I think it is the graphics card problem. Let me elaborate.
Almost from the beginning I was overclocking my 5650 with AMD GPU Clock Tool to 700/900 every time I played games. I never had any issues with games, no freezes, no artifacts, temp were ok . After I finish playing, I always reset clock to normal values. And it is this reset, when weird things happen now. I am seeing vertical blinking lines all over the screen while closing/opening/switching between windows or navigating trough start menu or browser with my mouse. This might be a coincidence but I think it started when I installed 12.6 drivers. But now I have 12.8 and the problem still exist. I even did a full driver wipe with driver cleaning tool. Yesterday I even had BSOD while browsing pages in Firefox. Funny thing is that I still play games on 700/900 and everything is fine, even when I exit to desktop. The problem only occurs when I switch back to nominal 100/150! Maybe something wrong with Catalyst A.I? But after I hibernate/un-hibernate the system everything is fine even on 100/150 values. It also appears when, after I power on the laptop, I o/c it to 700/900 and the IMMEDIATELY go back to stock values (w/o playing any games). That CAN’T be the graphic card can it? Did anybody of you experience something like this? Thanks

I have the same symptoms also starting from Cats 12.6. I'm using AMD GPU Clock to OC.
That's not a hardware problem though- something's changed in drivers (power management I guess)

Thanks Downloads, I think I am relieved a bit that this is not my GPU dying on me. Also hope that these drivers aren't deadly to our GPUs in some way, ie. while OC'ing. Guess I can go back to April drivers then which, from what i've seen on benchmark3d, are the fastest drivers to date.

I get the same blinking lines the second i reset my clocks to default. It doesn't matter if you played games or anything. With OC clocks(or normal clocks before OC) its all fine, but as soon as you reset them to default it starts showing blinking lines. This is happening from the first time i OC my HD5650.I don't know if it is a driver issue or anything, but i have a very easy way to fix it.It seems that switching to classic theme(non aero) and then back fixes it.I got to this conclusion since when i start watching a movie on my BSPlayer(which ofc switches the theme to classic/non aero) and then immediately close it the blinking lines go away.So i guess it is an issue with aero of some kind or with new drivers as you said or maybe both.No idea what the real issue is and im not that tech savvy to find out.Hope i brought some light to the issue for those who can find out the real issue.

Hey kilara1, this is good a good fix but I hope they will fix this in new drivers. For one is certain - this is not GPU fault. Good.

It may be because AMD GPU Clock is quite old. There are other apps that can be used to OC and have been updated to work with most recent drivers.
I don't have the time to play games now- I'll probably test it when "I'm alive" hits the market for PC. :)

Anyone not using AMD GPU Clock and having this "problem"?
Also if you manually type 100/150 instead of using "revert to stock button"- does it happen too?
I've actually tested the latter but I forgot if it worked or not

Nope.Typing the clocks manually doesn't reproduce the bug/problem.Only when you use "restore default clocks" button. So i guess as you said maybe because its quite old app and it doesn't restore the clocks just right and produces this bug.On the other hand some ppl say it started with 12.6 drivers. So it may be a driver issue as well.I for one can't say when it started and if it was after 12.6.Btw what other tools can we use to OC our HD5650?So we check if other tools produce the same bug with the same drivers.

I write this to help other people trying to update BIOS in this laptop.

I just went through the process of updating my BIOS from 1.22 to 1.28. I know that updating BIOS within Windows is not a good practice, but it was pretty easy with previous versions... so I tried with the new bios package and it was impossible, it seems that the exe cannot be run in a x64bits OS like mine (Win7 home premium 64 bits).

So, I went to boot disks like Hiren's Boot CD to boot in DOS and then execute the dos bios flashing utility included in the package from Acer.

First problem I encountered, you cannot access NTFS drives from DOS without external help. So, I loaded an utility from Hiren's to access NTFS files. This was no good and the utility froze up, luckily enough, without damaging the BIOS.

So, I tried to boot from Hiren's and then exchange to other CD with the bios utility. Again, no good, because the DOS loaded from Hiren's runs emm386.exe and doskey.exe and the utility won't work along with those. There's an option not to load emm386.exe but still loads doskey.exe.

    FINALLY, I found this bootdisk:

MS-DOS 7.10 LiveCD / BootCD for BIOS Flashing

I made a custom iso with MagicISO and included the utility files, booted up to DOS and flashed the BIOS  I read in this thread that someone in Spain trashed his BIOS trying 1.28 update twice. I think maybe this would had been a solution for him and others.

Thannks for all the info and resources you gathered here, hope this helps!

I think i kinda figured out the issue with the blinking lines when overclocking.I used MSI afterburner and i read there are few settings for the "UnofficialOverclockingMode" setting in the config file namely: 0-disabled,1-enabled and using power play and 2-enabled and not using powerplay. When i use 1 and OC i immediately get the blinking lines(because clocks change between 2D and 3D clocks because of powerplay). If i use 2 i dont get the lines when i OC.Instead i get them when i reset to default clocks. That is because then the GPU again starts using powerplay. All that was with powerplay enabled in CCC.But if i disable powerplay in CCC,then i dont get the blinking lines on OC or on reset to default clocks. So i guess there is some compatibility issue with powerplay and OCing. The problem is that after you have OC the GPu once even with powerplay disabled in CCC,when you finish gaming or what you OCed for and reset the clo0cks back and you enable powerplay again in CCC you get the blinking lines again. So the only fix i found is after you reset back the clocks to disable and then enable again aero(or not use aero at all).Maybe someone can figure out a better fix than mine.

PS:Btw that won't seem to be a problem with Win8 since they removed aero in it :)
And i wonder if its possible to enable amd overdrive for mobility drivers for our gpu?Anyone have any info on that?
