    Acer Aspire 5742 horrible fan noise

    The fan comes on and off every minute or two and it's driving me crazy. This happens even when the CPU is at or near 0% usage. I think it's been like this from the start since I bought it.

    If there's no full solution, perhaps there's a way I can get the fan to remain constantly on - even that would be better than the constant on/off/on/off pattern.

    The specs of the laptop are:
    Acer Aspire 5742 - Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 370 @ 2.40GHZ

    I've tried setting the system cooling policy to "passive", but to no avail.

    Check the CPU temperatures- maybe it's overheating and that's why fan is working at high rpm.
