When plugging any pair of headphones into the headphone jack, the plug does not feel firm as it used to, and comes out very easily. Connection is unstable: it is possible to wiggle the plug a little, moving it at all can cause the connection to cease and sound to start playing out of the normal speakers again.
The microphone jack is fine and feels very firm when plugging in.
Tried each pair of headphones used with other devices such as iPods and other computers, each of which were firm connections and did not have any problems.
Problem has only just started to happen after eighteen months of use.
Is this permanent, or do I have any hope of fixing it?

The jack is history. You should read this: I need to replace my headphone jack on my laptop, how do i do it and where can i buy one? - Yahoo! Answers
You'll probably make things worse if you attempt to fix it yourself. Either get it fixed by the manufacturer or a third party repair shop. Probably won't be cheap. Sorry.
There are shops on Ebay offering repair services but don't know if they are any good. Here is one example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LAPTOP-NOTE...863?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f04218f37
