    Hi there,

    I've spent the last day looking at forum posts related to the "black screen of death" on Acer machines, and while I have found some solutions for Acer Aspire One and others, I haven't found any that relate directly to my model, so I'm just hoping someone here may be able to help.

    Machine details:

    Acer 5810TZG running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. I bought it less than 2 months ago.

    My laptop shut itself down, I think as a result of a Windows Update. On restart it seemed to boot as normal, with the Acer/Windows screens, and then I logged on. The screen then went black despite the hard drive continuing to function. I could hear sounds from my desktop - e.g. Twitter replies coming in on Seesmic desktop client - but the screen remained black. I waited for a while but the display didn't come back.

    After trying a few more times, and starting safe mode (which works fine), I did a system restore to a point before the most recent Windows update. On this occasion the machine booted up, I logged on, and I got to my desktop - hurrah! - but, after about 30 seconds, it disappeared again. Boo. The screen just went black despite the machine clearly still functioning.

    I shut down the machine and unplugged it, and left it a few hours in case of overheating; I removed and reattached the battery; I've uninstalled a driver for a printer I installed a couple of weeks ago... but no luck. I'm still only able to use the machine in safe mode.

    At no point were there any USB ports being used during this process (the printer I mentioned was in an office a couple of weeks ago).

    Apologies for adding to the deluge of black screen posts already clogging up the internet, but I'm not sure what to do next. Do you think solutions for other models, like the Aspire One would be worth trying - e.g. like this?

    Does this sound like a problem with a driver, or software, or the machine itself - since it appears not to be a hard drive/screen issue?

    I haven't heard the best reports of Acer support so would prefer to avoid using my warranty if possible as I can't really afford to be without the machine for too long. But if there's no other way...

    Any help most gratefully received!

    Hi,

    since Safe Mode works fine, I think there is some driver related issue.
    What you can also try:
    Start in Safe mode and check the Event Log if there are errors reported.
    Additionally, check the Power Profiles (no idea if these are accessible in Safe Mode).
    Also, please create a new user account for testing purpose.
    Reboot and log in as this new user. If all works good, then there is something wrong with your old user profile.

    Thanks for your reply Michael.

    Creating a new user profile resulted in the same outcome. However there are several errors in Event Viewer>Windows Logs>System, which I have copied below - do any of these look they may cause this kind of problem?

    • -
      The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
      tcpipBM

    • \SystemRoot\SysWow64\Drivers\tcpipBM.SYS has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Please contact your software vendor for a compatible version of the driver.

    • The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
      discache

    Also, under Event Viewer>Windows Logs>Applications, these errors are logged:

    • Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\MovieMaker.Exe".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\WLMFDS.DLL" on line 8. I'm not sure what any of the listed errors mean, or how to fix them (aside from uninstalling Windows Live); or even if they really need fixing. So I guess I'd value your opinion as to whether you think any of these may relate directly to the problem I've been experiencing?

    Please excuse my ignorance - thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!

    Hi,
    Okay.
    I would start with this one. Aunt Google tells me this could be a "network optimization tool" from Bytemobile.com You happen to have some additional communication software installed? I am thinking of VPN clients, connection software for mobile Internet, something like this.
    Uninstall that and see if things improve.

    These error messages sound familiar to me. I simply trashed MS Works (for two reasons: Open Office is much better and the EULA stated something about advertising).
    As for the Life Essentials: If you want or need them, uninstall, re-download from MS website and reinstall. Perhaps this already helps.

    But these application errors don't have priority. They do not cause your system crashes.

    did you lately updated your graphics driver?
    may be it could be causing troubles...
    especially if you had different driver version before and after the system restore point you used was created...

    @Michael_Recycled

    I've uninstalled the software for a Virgin Mobile mobile internet dongle, but this had no effect. I attempted to uninstall the T-Mobile Web Accelerator as well, but apparently can't do this in safe mode. I also have Skype installed, I wonder if this may be affecting things? I don't have any VPN clients installed.

    I looked at bytemobile.com to see if their software may be used by any other things on my machine, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

    @Arminator

    As far as I'm aware there's been no change to my graphics driver...

    I suspect I may need to try a system recovery! :(

    Hi,
    Michael is enough ;)

    Hm. I downloaded this software from T-Mobile UK website and looked into the archive. This contains the bytemobile driver which crashes on your system. So we need to get rid of that.

    Okay. Doesn't matter. The culprit is the T-Mobile software.

    OKay. Here we go.
    1. Start your computer in safe mode.
    2. Enable visibility of hidden devices (Device Manager does not display devices that are not connected to the Windows XP-based computer)
    3. Go to device manager and check the "show hidden " mark in the menu.
    4. Now browse all sections (including non-PnP) if you can find an entry that might be related. If you are sure you got one, disable it. If you are in doubt, ask.
    5. Next: Start -> Run -> Services.msc
    6. Check if there any services related to Byte Mobile existing. If so, disable it.
    7. Next: Start -> Run -> MSconfig.
    8. Check the startup tab if there is something related to Byte Mobile stuff. Disable.
    9. Reboot

    OK,

    I disabled the bytemobile and T-Mobile in services.msc and on the start-up tab of msconfig.

    Also, under REGEDIT>SOFTWARE>Wow6432Node I removed the bytemobile and T-Mobile elements I could find.

    In Device Manager, under Non Plug And Play Drivers, I removed the bytemobile element I could find.

    Restarted, but still got the black screen.

    I thought I'd try starting the machine in Diagnostic Start-up under msconfig - this allowed the desktop to load, but apparently it unfortunately disabled my internet connection, so I returned to safe mode.

    I notice that T-Mobile Accelerator is still in my list of programs, however - do I need to do something else to remove it from the machine completely (can't appear to delete from Programs & Features in safe mode).

    Also, in Device Manager, I notice that under non-PNP drivers there's an error notice against Security Processor Loader Driver (spldr) with "Error 24" stating: "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed."

    I Googled this error and have noticed people mentioning it in relation to black screen issues. Do you think this might be affecting my machine's startup?

    Thanks for your help and patience - any further suggestions welcome!

    Hi,
    Could you please check event log again?
    You may also try the "logging" option (after having pressed F8 when starting the machine).
    In startup tab (of msconfig), what programs are enabled? Also check the services tab (after checking "hide all microsoft services".

    On the other hand, you might be able to get rid of the T-crap if you start in Diagnostic mode.
    Either you have to remove it the hard way by deleting the application folder and removing any references in registry, or you can get rid of the software after you managed to start the system normally.

    Seems to normal in safe mode. I booted my machine in Safe Mode and had exactly the same. So, don't touch that.
    This driver belongs to Windows. It shouldn't have any effect in that matter.

    I think i have the same problem as you do. In my case it is the ATI card that is messed up. Try plugging in an external monitor. See if that helps. In my case the laptop screen goes black (still glows) but the external works fine.
    If you switch to the intel video card it should all work fine untill you switch back to ATI. I dont have a solution for this problem. But if you could confirm if you have the same problem. Let me know and we will search for help together :p
