    Hi,

What is the colour depth of the LCD screen in the Aspire 5920? 6-bit (262K colours) or 8-bit (16.7 million colours) ? I was looking at the Dell Inspiron 1520 / Vostro 1500 range, but have just discovered that they have 6-bit displays, which can only display 262K (262,144) colours without dithering - they have to use "dithering" techniques to show 16.7 million colours, which can *sometimes* make the screen look "grainy/sparkly" (and is not so good for photoshop and similar uses!).

What about other Acers (e.g. Aspire 5633)?

    Many thanks... :)

EDIT: although, with a bit more searching, I have read that a lot of laptops (indeed perhaps *almost all* that aren't hugely expensive ones) also use the 6-bit (262K colours) screens, and use dithering, and usually don't look bad at all (including MacBook / MacBook Pro) - I have read that you have to buy a much more up-market expensive laptop to get 8-bit ("true" 16.7 million colours) LCD panel screens, and that they are rare. If so, I guess we don't need to worry! (Maybe 6-bit is fine - can always connect to an external monitor if very colour-sensitive work is needed I guess).

    I don't get sth :/
    When I was young:
    8bit was 256 colors
    16bit was 65536
    24bit was 16,7mil (High Color)
    32bit was 4,2bln (True Color)

What 6bit/8bit are you referring to?

Thanks for info guys. Nothing can be that Simple, can it?
I guess the best way is for some of you who already have 5920 to run Everest and see who is the LCD producer and visit the site hoping for some information.

That's not enough. My Aspire also states LG Philips.
What's the exact model number? For example mine is LG Philips LP154W01-TLA2 (on Aspire 5024 not 5920G)

Anyways currently there is only one LG 1280x800 15,4" model LP154WX4 and it's 6bit.

Or have I missed sth? Check by yourself. http://www.lgphilips-lcd.com/homeContain/jsp/eng/prd/prd300_j_e.jsp

What I meant to say is that what you gave us is not a model number.
In my case Vista Device Manager lists LPL0000 whereas the model number is LP154W01-TLA2. Try Everest if you want to get all information.
