So a year or two ago I bought an Acer Aspire 5920, it's always ran extremely hot (to the point that if I don't use an external fan it will skip movies and lag out everything). This will technically be the second laptop I've bought (the first had the same problem so I exchanged it for this one). I sent it in to Acer twice and it's come back the same way both times, with them saying there is nothing wrong with it. I now have to use a laptop stand with a desk fan behind it (and it STILL gets too hot). I have tried cleaning out the inside, reapplying the liquid silver (or whatever it's called) to the processors and heatsink bar, and even cleaned and oiled the fan. Is there anything that can be done about it?

-EDIT- Also forgot to add that my laptop screen just died on me for no apparant reason. Shut it off one night, came back in the next morning and nothing.

Some Acers run HOT. My HDD is prone to temps way beyond it's specs.
    Sealed HDD compartment and all.

Bad Acer design as far as cooling goes. Mine is a 5684 WLMi. Older Acer.
AFAIK the 5920 is rock solid. Much better design of airflow components.....

So, I reckon you have something eating up your Processor time. And making it work too hard...and thus overheating your Lappie??

Here is the Avira link: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

Give it a bash. Me thinks you have a virus..........

Well Ima run the avira just in case, but I doubt it's a virus because:

    1) 2 laptops have done the same thing straight out of the box
    2) I have reformatted and installed a new OS about 4 times now (testing pro's and cons of vista/xp much? xD)

Will definately post the results of my Avira run. Thankyou for your quick response. Btw i meant to add that while running IE only (all unnecessary programs killed) it tries to run at about 90C with no external fan running and the bottom cover off. Idles at about 75C.

Badly built series comes to mind.

i also had same issues while running ie, and guess what i stopped using ie altogater and i had a laptop which rarely used fans anymore.. i am not a gamer but even when i played games on 5920g i expected temps to rise which was normal...

anyway just stop using ie altogather update ur bios to the latest and start using google chrome.. man u will see the diffrence... lastly seriously consider using rmclock if u use it wisely u can bring a 20-30 degree temperature differnce easily...
