I’m a happy owner of Acer Aspire 5920G. (laptop has a latest bios)
    I decided to buy Radeon HD 4650 1GB DDR2 (M96) [VG.M9606.005].
I put in my Aspire, happy as a child, but then… what the hell ?
    Blank screen!
System boots, hdd blinks, I can hear vista sounds but no picture.
I read on the internet that it could be graphic card bios issue. ( The Acer Guy Blog Archive Morris’ Aspire 5920 GPU Swap/upgrade)

    What is the solution?

(i think my card was pulled from compal or msi laptop)
Could anybody send me acer bios to this card?
And how to do a "blind flash"

    Please help.

VG.m9606.005 looks like an Acer asset tag

    However......

*rumages around in old bios draw*

I think this is what you are looking for.

Have you tried hooking it up to an external monitor?

Internal, and external (d-sub) are the same - blank

    So what is the procedure?
    I write : atiflash -p -f 0 4650.rom
And then what ? I know laptop awaits for something, but what ?

If everything runs fine, after 20 seconds it's done and you have to manually reboot it, the problem is that even if it's not OK, you still have to reboot it manually. The only way to check whether it's successful, or it isn't is when you reboot it, if you see something - then it's successful and the opposite.

BTW It's Acer sourced, right? I think that it could be faulty. It should boot out-of-the-box.

    History was like this.
Today once again i instlalled 4650.
Same as allways. blank screen. so i tried blind flash. with number 0 in command line, no resoult
with number 1 in command line, same no resoult.
so i puted back my old gf 8600gs, aaand - blank screen, hdd works, vista boots (i can hear the welcome sound) but no screen. Nothing on internal, nothing on external.
so i ran to local laptop service to ask if they got spare gpu. they took my laptop plugged it in and said that probably one of power lines to gpu is missing...
    (Sorry for my bad english)

Try to reflash the ATi card again with 0 this time, I guess HD4650 still wont work, but it could bring your lappy back to life (with 8600GS), at least if it's not hardware related :)

My 5920 came back from service... they replaced mobo and graphic card (they said 8600 died too.). I had to pay a half of laptop value. now i dont know what to think. i found cigarette ashes inside my laptop... and additonal 1Gb of ram. They also forgot to thermal paste, and there was some screws missing.
Some of Polish laptop service companies are strange ones...
I think i will be avoiding this one...

Price difference is negligible difference in speed is not that big either bur 9500M GS seems faster than HD3650.

Am I Cussed or something?
I returned it to a seller, and paid for another hd4650.
Maybe this time it will work properly...

    Wish me luck.

    Many Thanks! :D
I just installed freshly arrived HD4650.
    And it works! Finally!

    52 degrees in idle,
    90 degrees in stress
I used 0,5mm copper mod (self made) and arctic MX-4 paste.

    Now I'm testing the "gemstone"

About the same happened with my Aspire8735G. After my attempt on changing the CPU (and a small accident with the graphic card) the laptop wouldn't turn on anymore (black screen). It wasn't booting either. After several weeks spent in service I got an answer: the graphic card was completely dead. Further more, some voltages for the graphic card were missing (mobo fault).
Solution: voltage regulators on the mobo replaced and new graphic card (HD4670).

It's weird to read of another case of dead mobo (I mean the power supply for the GPU) caused by a faulty graphic card. I never thought it was possible.

Same thing here, in Romania: screws missing, bad case assembly, heat sink mounted worng, etc. They say they are "Acer authorized repair shop". Really?!?! Before paying for the repair I made them put things together the right way. They did, except for the heat sink => 110 degrees Celsius on the GPU in stress. I hate leaving things in service.

Anyway... On my second attempt on changing the CPU (No, I did not give up! :D ) it works just as it should have worked 2 months ago. I mounted the heat sink the right way together with ZM-STG1 thermal paste. It works great. Temps around 40 degrees on both CPU and GPU at idle.

Reading your story and adding it to my recent experience with "repair specialists" looks like some of the end users have more knowledge and do things way better than "authorized personnel".

Good luck with your mod. Hope you make it work just the way you want!

So the story goes like this:
I wanted to upgrade my Aspire 5920G GPU.

Firstly i bought extremely cheap HD4650 (without warranty and ability to return it, i wanted to save some money). When i put it in my laptop it burned my mobo (which already had some problems with RTC), and also mobo burned my old GPU. Repair cost was 1,5 of a new HD4650 (niece money save...)

After repair i borrowed some money (don tell it to my wife :D ) and bought another HD4650, this time i managed to make it work properly but it had nasty artifacts (probably damaged memory).

I managed to get the money back, and in act of desperation bought GF9500M GS from another seller. I thought there should be no problem because some 5920G's where sold with this GPU. But for the third time i had a bad luck. Card send back to the seller.

Finally i bought HD4650 from same seller which sold me 9500, and this time SUCCESS, it works.

    But...

I have no audio on HDMI out, is that normal?

When chip-set reaches high temperature integrated sensor hangs. Even when system is cooled down, sensors shows high temperature and fan works like crazy, i have to reboot to get normal state of a laptop.
Any one know how to fix this?

And also in games laptop acts like it has a bottleneck somewhere, how is that possible?

Same thing here... But I'm sure of this...

    So the story ends...
I'm to tired, Third HD4650 didn't worked properly.
Overheating chipset, slide show in half games which worked properly on 8600gs
    Complete hangs.

    I installed GF8600M GS back.
Maybe ill try some time later...

Have you tried to right click on the Volume icon, Playback devices and then choose one of the HDMIs (I have two - Realtek and ATi) and check which one would work.

When I had HD3470 it acted the very same way. Once the fan kicked in highest gear it never slows down until reboot. Have you done the copper mod?

Probably the GPU, or CPU, or BOTH! are throttling. Install ThrottleStop and run it, but you can melt something for sure! First check your cooling.

I tried that in a first place. No sound on both. When I plug the TV I got message: HDMI to DVI connection detected.
That is strange because both where connected through HDMI
Maybe its driver issue? I used latest from AMD site.

On GPU 15x15x0,5mm (1,0mm was to thick) copper plate + mx4 thermal paste. GPU never passed over 90 degrees in stress, 42-50 in idle (By hardware monitor ( CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting)

    On chipset factory thermal pad.
The problem don't exists with gf8600 gs installed.

    Never thought of that...
Ill try this with next HD4650.
I had to return last one to seller, (in Poland I have 10 days money back guarantee).
Seller promised me new shipment in a half of May.

HDMI to DVI?! When you connect your laptop with 8600M inside through HDMI is it the same?

I have a 0,9mm thick one, I tried 0,5mm and found that it's too thin (not that good contact = a tad higher temps).

    With 8600 works fine...

Ill look for 0,9mm, just to be sure.
