I'm afraid that my laptop is near death.

Sometimes when it starts up, it makes a terribly loud beeping noise for some minutes, and then it boots Windows. Sounds like a problem to me.

And it's really underperforming. For example, I run Mirror's Edge at Low, 1024x768 and 20 FPS, and I've seen some 8500 GT systems (worse than my 8600M GS) run it at Highest, 1024x768, 30 FPS. As I play the game for longer time, it lags even more; to unplayable levels.

My laptop even lags with basic tasks, like Office and Internet tasks. I can't stand it anymore. Restore to factory settings does nothing.

I'm planning to get a high-performance desktop in 6 months, but is my laptop going to die? Any tips to make it faster?

Sounds like hard drive problem to me. There is an option in the BIOS that can disable the Acer logo while booting, so you can see system information upon boot. Disable the logo and pay attention for a hard drive malfunction/replacement messages.

Have you tried a HDD diagnostics test.

If you try HD Tune, this may be able to help you find out if anything is going wrong with your HDD (Direct download link below).

When you do the error scan of the HDD the green blocks will go red if there is some damage.

Also, in the health tab, it shows the status of other parts off the hdd.
