    Hi all!

I just got my Aspire 5930G here in sweden, and i have to say coming from a DELL laptop, this one is really nice.

It has a 2.0GHZ CPU which maybe is a little slow, but the grfx card (Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT) makes up for that! :)
    3 GB RAM, HDMI/VGA ports, DVD-writer, 15.4" screen with 1280x800.

I just put in another harddrive in it (320gigger instead of 250 that came with it) and with 7200rpm instead of the original 5400 it is really much faster.

I bought the laptop for 1160$ aprox, which is pretty cheap, isnt it? =)

Just tried 3dmarks 2006 and it gets 5567 points which is VERY good for this kind of cheap laptop, "for the win"!

It seems this laptop is pretty rare still, im not sure its new on the market, but can other owners please write here, maybe some tips or so :)
Wonder if i for instance can put another (faster) CPU in this one to make it faster..

Here are some links for those who are intrested in this one:

    WinXP drivers for 5930: http://www.laptops-drivers.com/acer-notebooks/acer-aspire-5930-windows-xp-drivers.html

    Review of it: http://www.kaskus.us/showthread.php?p=40347922&posted=1

I think i will try to review it here on notbookreview aswell if anyone is intrested in that :)

Johan, congrats on the 5930G! Your 3DMark is making be envious.
You can certainly upgrade the CPU - look for a P9500, T9400, or T9600.
Or if you really want to make this machine a balls-first gamer, the X9100 at 3.06 Ghz!

Don't you break the warranty changing CPU? And if you don't, is it hard to do?

Also, could you post some pics of the machine? :)

Actually, I spoke with Acer Support on the issue - you can upgrade any part of the system and you won't break the warranty! Just as long as you put the original part back before sending it back for service.

    some acers have high temperature.

is this laptop warm (high temperature)?
a friend said, "acer 5930 laptops are very high temperature for use? because they have 9600gt."

is it true? I'm dreaming for a cold working acer.

did you try to use RMClock utility? It's the great thing! You need just to undervolt your CPU to decrease the temperature of you laptop by 15-25C. It's really works. If you don't beleive me - look the screenshots of S&M utility after 30 min. CPU test link. The screenshots placed at the top of article. The difference is nearly 25 C (CPU VOLTAGE - 1.00 and 1.25V). The configuration of that utility is shown on the screenshots below. It really helps to decrease heating of CPU.

    Sorry for my English :)

This laptop is rather warm. When you put it on the table and don't play rich 3d games all four temperatures (CPU1, CPU2, GPU, HDD) are below 50C. When you put it on your lap you won't stand long because temperature under the GPU is too annoying, around 55C. When you play e.g. Elder Scrolls Oblivion the temperatures can reach 90C beside HDD. The good thing is that the fan don't spin too often and it's quiet.
I would not recommend to play with voltage of the CPU, because it could be dangerous. If it would cause such decrease in temperature of lappy the manufacture would surely take advantage of it

I am really intrested in getting another CPU for this machine, its basically the only "slow" part since i chanegd the hdd in mine to a 7200rpm one.

Do i need other memory-sticks if I change CPU?

Other than the CPU this machine is REALLY nice, it never gets that hot when i use it, although i did not test it in my lap, will do that sometime later and try..

Tried all sorts of games; Racedriver GRID, Crysis, Dawn of War, Couterstrike: Source, Space Siege, Spore, etc, and all work nicely! Very happy i bought this one :)
Would easily recommend anyone to buy it!

Memory sticks are not related to CPU, they are "independant".
Be sure to check compatibility before upgrade as in some (pretty rare) cases turned out memory was incompatible with certain computers (happened to my friend with 5920G).

And question: which program does 5930 use for managing network profiles? Owners of 5920 got eframevork 2.5 and it's part is also eNetManagement, which is AFAIK missing in version 3.

    Congrats on new machine :)

May I ask some questions? I am thinking about buying the 5930G.

    1) Is the keyboard good? Is it good enough to touch-type with?

    2) Can you uninstall the Empowering Technology/ePower without causing problems like overheating? I have heard bad things about Acer in this regard.

    Thanks! :)

The keyboard is good for typing. You have to get used to multimedia keys on the right of the keyboard because you can accidentally click on them by ordinary typing.
I'm using Linux Fedora 9 which doesn't have neither Empowering Technology nor ePower installed and I haven't got problems with overheating. I could even say that temperatures are 2 or 3 degrees lower than on MS Vista.

Thanks a lot for the reply NSLW. Makes me much more confident about getting the 5930G. I like to have my OS running with the bare minimum of software running so the empowering 'stuff' would have annoyed me a lot.

I had read about the multimedia keys at the side. I'll probably just disable them, if that's possible.

    Thanks again.

Already use this laptop for 1 week and just wanna give some review of it...hehe.
    -Intel Centrino 2 P7350-2Ghz,1066FSB 3mb L2
    -3ghz ddr2 ram-667Mhz
    -250Gb hdd
    -9600m GT ddr3
    -dvd drive
    -wifi A,B,G,N
This laptop i bought for £599.99 and the price over performance ratio is quite good.First of all,the design is similar with 5920 but with black chassis instead of white. Most of the light indicators are blue, and they match well with the black chassis. The keyboard is kinda cheap, feels like the whole keyboard is too filmsy when hit the keys hard. The media keys are responsive but only have 4 buttons which are play/pause,stop,rewind and forward(it would be great if mute, volume up/down are included). There are 4 usb port, hdmi, vga out, express card slot(no remote control :( ). The webcam is good compare to my previous Microsoft webcam nx-6000.
The processor is just normal, not sure which software to use for benchmark proc but from vista WEI,it scores 5.0 and the RAM is 5.9 although the speed is just 667Mhz.I have encountered slow respond when copying large files;the mouse cursor will respond 1second late but it returns to normal just after the 1 second.Maybe is the ram or maybe vista got bug,not sure :). I have finished playing crysis warhead and the game play was smooth. The settings i used were high details,1024X768 and DX9(a bit of lag if play with DX10).Moreover the 3d mark 06 score(basic edition1.1.0)i got is 5583,which i think is good. The built in speaker is just average and the bass is not so powerful as well.
The laptop comes with a lot of useless program,so just uninstall most of the acer program and free up some space. The only acer software that is useful is the audio management.

    Hello everyone.

Im a contractor in Qatar, im american.

I bought a 5930 recently and absolutely love it.

It does get very hot, but has not overheated. I do have a 3 fan aluminum laptop cooler sitting underneath it now and have no problems.

Im very, very interested in learning how to upgrade not only the memory but also the cpu. Any hints or point me to what I need to do?

I worked on desktops for so long, I did put in a new 320g 7200rpm harddrive, like the last poster. It makes a huge difference. And of course put xp on it since vista is the worst thing for computers since someone thought 100000lbs monitors were vogue.

I really do love this machine, it has done everything well for me.

from what i know centrino 2 platform can use 800mhz ram and i don't think upgrading cpu is possible for laptop.you take out the 6 screws on the back and u will see the ram.and pull the latch outwards and the ram will pop out.then install your new ram by sliding it into the latch until you hear 'click'.hope it helps.cheers

RAM and CPU can be upgraded.
The level of easyness on the other hand is debatable for CPU upgrades from laptop to laptop, but it's definitely possible.

Trying to get information from Acer is like pulling teeth from a baby.

I see some nice ram online and the stuff in here is like 533mhz I think, thats what the nomenclature on the current ram hints at.

There are several places online to check your computers ram and they have a difficult to nonexistent time at figuring it out. Its definitly cheap, generic and leaving my laptop very soon.

I just wish I could be absolutely sure, I mean 20 bucks isnt much. But I do hate to waste good memory on a machine that cant use it.

The CPU is for a later date, though I did just get a 32 inch hdtv that looks amazing with the HDMI connection.

Another question I have is, since I have a hdmi connect on this laptop. Can I hook my Xbox360 upto the laptop and play games on the lappies monitor?

Portable monitor for an xbox360 would be bad to the bone.

    Thanks for all the help.

Laptop's LCD display is not LCD TV nor classical LCD for computer with video in. You have HDMI out not in :).

Err, you need eRecovery so you can make backup DVDs of your Vista (I guess you got Vista) as you have 10 GB hidden partition for reinstalling Vista.

I bought this very nice machine at JohnLewis last night before it closed down.
    Hehe ...
Took me about 30 mins to clean up the system of useless Acer stuff, and I installed Mass Effect.
Am playing in native resolution with no hangups and maxed out settings.

The laptop does get quite warm, but dangerous levels are nowhere near in sight.
Despite it's stellar performace up until now, I'll install XP once I get back to Zagreb on Saturday most likely on it as I see Vista as a waste of space a bit.
Been working in ti before, tweaked it and all, and I don't see the advantages over XP really.
So I'll revert to XP Pro SP3 myself in about 5 days time.

As for overclocking the cpu ... hm ... I was thinking about that, but for now it's hardly needed.
I'd sooner undervolt both the gpu and the cpu before doing anything else.

Btw ... any decent coolers for notebooks (that don't cost a fortune btw) in UK or London for purchase?

No use to overclock CPU, CPU in modern games is nothing. But GPU overclock is very useful... BTW in hard games (far cry 2) gpu is about 95C :)

I have a question I hope you could help me with, I've recently bought my Acer 5930, and I've been looking for ways to install XP over the data-hungry Vista. Now, this means that I need the drivers backupped. I followed the download link, but I also found out that Acer allows you to backup your drivers rather then the entire image.

Here is my question, do these Drivers that are backupped from the current Vista driven laptop work on XP as well?

Nope, you'll need XP drivers. I suggest you open your "Device Manager" and write down all your devices such as graphic card, sound card, wireless, ethernet, bluetooth, webcam etc etc. before you decide to downgrade to XP. Will be easier to find 'em out later.

Exactly ... first rule if you get a pre-installed Vista and want to revert back to XP:
Go to device manager, and write down names/numbers of ALL relevant hardware components.
Next download the drivers on a separate partition or a usb stick, and go back to XP.
    Simple.
    :)

Btw ... is there any discernable difference on this laptop in terms of heat production when XP is used and not Vista?

    'littleirishman57'

    I have no idea.
I just checked their website and indeed, the 5930G is nowhere to be found.
www.simplyacer.com has that laptop though, but it comes with 1 year warranty instead of 2 like on JohnLewis.

I'd phone JohnLewis store just in case and ask them what's happening.
When I was in the store on Sunday (Oxford street in London), they had 3 of them in stock.
2 after I purchased mine of course. :D

So there's a possibility they have those 2 or one ... phone them up and ask.

I tried to buy it over the weekend but my order kept getting cancelled, so I guess something is up.

I ended up buying from Laptops Direct instead. It costs £589.97 and if you order an accessory with it you get free delivery. I ordered a targus laptop case so the order came up to £600. Of course, I don't get the 2 year warranty that John Lewis offers but the laptop case will have to suffice.

just type in windows xp drivers 5930 in google...

I found all the drivers, and some of the vista drivers on the acer site work just fine for windows xp.

You need to download special drivers for the graphics though, again I lost the website, but look for modifieda mobile nvidia graphic card drivers.

    There are several sites.

Can anyone post any benchmarks of how well this game runs with demanding games like Far Cry 2/ Fallout 3/ Crysis?
What settings and such, that would be great :)
I just heard from a friend that theirs Acer 7730 can play Crysis at gamer settings, I really struggle to believe that

The only way to enable AHCI (SATA) under XP is to install SATA drivers.
Go to www.Intel.com and search them up there.
There is a good possibility you will also Intel Matrix Storage device driver, so download that too.
Once you've installed both, re-enable AHCI function in BIOS.

I'm looking to remove the accompanied Acer bloatware, but I'm unsure about what to uninstall. Would anyone be willing to throw some light on the subject? I'd appreciate the specifics.

    Sure thing.
Remove every with Acer program (games incl. - from Oberon media) apart from Crystal Eye camera driver, and the Recovery.
That was the first thing I did when I got my 5930G.
    :)

I'm equally unfamiliar with overclocking myself, but the CPU was running at that particular clock rate by default.
