What sort of stories were they
-
Actually, I'm an artist in general, into various aspects of art to be precise (3d art, creative writing, singing, acting, drawing) and of course with technical background primarily in computers (both desktops and laptops).
The things I write about are scifi in origin for the most part.
The book itself can be considered scifi, but deals with different possibilities primarily and expands on what is well established in science, but also pushes things to the extreme.
Because let's face it, contemporary ways of thinking cannot really be applied for example 300 years into the future where technology will be vastly different and humans will think in a different capacity (with any luck that is).
The book is set mostly in present day, but plenty of other things will be included.
I'm also doing 3d art based on the book.
Have some things I can easily post for others to see, but not yet.
-
Cool, well if you want someone to read it and give an opinion I;m always available, as I like reading new things esp. scifi and action
I'm also into art a little.
I like doing tribal art (drawing and coloring[inking]), by hand on paper -
oh i love to read too
i love art too lol,i take piano and voice lessons and music theory
in january i will start taking IT and graphics courses and photography and things like that XD -
just thought id quickly pop on line and wishall the acer 5930 owners a very happy christmas....may the best of your past be the worst of your future!!!!

Thank you wolfery
Happt Holidays to all -
Hey guys.
Just reporting I installed XP SP3 on this laptop and removed the pre-installed Vista SP1.
Everything works fine.
The camera is not giving me trouble like it did to 'kikso'.
I had issues with the SATA drivers (getting the 'your system doesn't meet minimum requirements' error), but thanks to 'werewolfery', I installed the ones from Toshiba and everything works fine now with AHCI enabled in BIOS (after which I installed the ones from Intel site ... same ones that gave the 'minimum req.' error and got the latest version of Intel Matrix storage device)..
I also found fairly recent (from 2008) Nvidia HDMI drivers that work in XP.
Once Windows is done installing some updates for my office 2007 and remaining OS updates, I think I will re-allocate the disk space from C to D and possibly make another partition on which I will put Vista Home Premium SP1 (SP2 as well) 64 bit.
I like the snappiness of XP.
I do miss Aero somewhat, but overall it's not a big loss since my XP essentially looks like Vista minus the Aero.
At least now I shouldn't experience any issues in terms of compatibility with older software.
But I'm also itching to try out a clean Vista Home Premium SP1 64bit (just for my 3dsMax).
EDIT:
Well, XP continues to run just fine, but during start-up the network devices take a few extra seconds to load up into the system tray for some reason.
The boot time on the other hand is about 45 to 50 seconds.
I'll still have to re-allocate the disk space and install Vista 64 bit (most likely during the day).
I don't celebrate holidays, so it's all the same to me. -
Merry Christmas to everyone
by the way its my birthday too today
and for the xp i didnt have sp3 so maybe that's why it wasnt working good -
@deks, I don't celebrate christmas but there is no harm in wishign those who do
@kisko
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Hope you have a blast
EDIT -Gave you some rep beacuse it's ur b-day (present from me)
Mine was 3 days ago (22)
I may install XP sometime in the future just to see how it works, or a clean install of vista to clean up my system -
-
thxxxxxx werewolfery and Rayyan
Rayyan happy birthday a bit late XD -
lol
Thanks anyway
(maybe a bit of rep as a late gift)
Also, have any of you benchmarked the laptop using 3Dmark06 yet???
If so, how did you do????? -
After all, SP3 incorporates some things that could have affected the stability.
I on the other hand lost the ability to record videos with my webcam on XP for some reason.
It's possible this feature works primarily with Vista.
Oh yes, I re-partitioned my hard drive last night (g-Parted took it's sweet time to do it btw) by reducing the c partition to 50GB, deleting the recovery partition, added 20 GB to the D partition (for most of the larger stuff that needs space), and created another partition of 50GB for Vista Home Premium 64 bit.
We'll see how the clean install of Vista 64bit behaves.
I also fired off an email to Acer about potential future BIOS support for 6 or 8GB once larger (1x4GB) RAM sticks become more widespread in laptops and lower in price.
Have yet to receive a response, but I think they should do it by sometime next week.
Will be keeping you posted.
Btw, the XP boot time is 47 seconds.
Not bad.
P.S. In regards to benchmarking the laptop. Well I did it early on when I first got the laptop using 3dMark06.
Received a score of 5350 if I'm not mistaken.
But I haven't done it ever since then.
I'll have to do so on XP to see if the scores will be affected (and let's face it, it's a clean OS install).
I'll probably do a test on Vista 64bit as well.
Have all of the necessary (latest) drivers for it as well, so it should be an interesting weekend (when I get the time of course). -
One more thing about the RAM.
The chipset that comes with 5930G is PM45 (at least mine is).
Now this particular chipset supports up to 8GB RAM without a problem as far as I'm aware.
The only thing we won't be able to do is switch from DDR2 to DDR3 (but the performance difference is practically non-existent in that case apart from the fact the DDR3 ram produces less heat and is more efficient in energy it uses).
So essentially, the only remaining question is ... would this laptop (with the latest bios of course) recognize 6 or 8GB RAM (say 1x4gb/1x2gb or 1x4gb/1x4gb ... provided of course we also use 64bit OS), or would Acer need to write a NEW bios that would allow for that?
We only have 2 slots inside the laptop so until 1x4gb sticks become more available and drop in price amount, we can't perform these upgrades (which would be a much more worthy one when using 64bit OS and more intense applications ... at least I would benefit from it as 3dsMax is a memory hog when rendering my NX-01 with high-res textures and high polygon count of 1.78 million).
Opinions? -
Hey guys ...
Reporting in from freshly installed Vista Home Premium SP1 (64bit).
Well, the good news is I retained the option to which OS I want to boot into.
That's primarily because I installed XPSP3 first and Vista x64 second.
Thus far Vista is working nicely.
I installed all up to date drivers (I also used Nvidia's official drivers from their website instead of Dox's as I want to test them out and see how they behave).
I still have to modify TuneUP utities and optimize this 64bit version with it so it runs even better.
I just wish there was more support out there for 64bit OS in terms of internet browsers and other programs.
My Nod32 (smart security) came with a 64bit option though so of course I used the 64bit one.
Once I'm done installing the necessities here in Vista 64bit, cleaning out the trash and optimizing boot files, I will probably install 3dMark 06 on both OS's and test them out.
Although, I don't think I will install beta SP2 for Vista just yet.
At least not until I test out the system with SP1 and see later if SP2 will have an impact.
Will report later.
And someone please post something/comment because I don't want to see all of the latest replies from me alone. -
i have a problem
i always use the laptop with the plug put in
well not always 2 or 3 times i used it without putting the plug
and now it says 97% plugged in,not charging
is this normal?
because when i put it before it was charging
but i havent tried after changing to xp and then to vista again -
i just got hold of the new windows seven beta ill let you all know how it goes im really looking forward to it cause so far seven has worked like a dream
-
I wouldn't worry though.
If you are not using the laptop in the field (without access to an outlet), then you can easily take out the battery so it's not inside the laptop all the time. -
well today too its not charging
so i will try to do 2 things:
-first i will try to use the battery till its 50% and see if it will charge
-second i will do like u said deks,i will take out the battery and use it 1 hr without it then put it again and see if it will charge
thx deks,i hope it works
Edit: i did the first thing and it worked, because i didnt try to make it charge after i formatted it so its the first time,i left it on the battery till it was 79% then i put the charge it took 2 minutes then it started charging -
Yea, that happens sometimes for
If I use if for a short time without ac power, and if more that ~95% is left then I think it doesn't charge
Good to see you got it sorted out. -
Great thread guys.
Followed some of the advice on here and other places and my 5930 is running like a dream.
Installed tune up 2008 which is awesome (thanks deks - ive added to your rep i think). also I'm not sure if I read it here or not but i've installed the latest dox drivers 184.18 or something and they are class. I'm running with a fan cooler underneath so no heat probs, but i want to do an experiment with it on and off just to check if there will be any potential probs - can anyone reccomend a good prog to log temps?
Happy new year! -
-
Yup ... HWmonitor is what I personally use.
Although keep in mind that if you have P7350 cpu like myself, HWMonitor will report about 10 degrees C higher temperatures for the CPU than what they actually are because the P7350 has a thermal threshold of 90 deg C and not 100 like other P socketed cpu's (although this isn't really an issue since temps never go near the 90 C threshold to begin with as far as P7350 is concerned).
There are 2 potential reasons why P7350 has a lower threshold
a) it's an entry P socket type cpu
b) operates on 2.0 GhZ per core
Bodkin, thank you for the reps.
TuneUP 2008 is one of the best applications I worked with personally and gets the job done.
Avoid TuneUP 2009 though for now as it would appear it's a bit unstable (although this may be so because I tried putting it on a x64 OS... which is odd to tell you the truth because TuneUP is supposed to offer full 64 bit support).
-
Tune up utilities are good, but I don't use em so much anymore, I used em more in vista because of the customization they offered, now i just use a collection of smaller that get what I need done
By the way, which bags/cases do you guys have for the lappy.
I can't seem to find one that gives an exact fit -
I use TuneUP in both XP and Vista because in my experience they provide the best optimizations for the OS and offer other nice aspects all in the same package.
As for bags/cases ... I personally bought myself a rucksack for a 17" laptop.
It doesnt' have an internal holding area as I would like, but at the same time it's roomy enough to put both my laptop and the cooler into it along with a bunch of other things I need. -
hi everybody !
i have an acer 5930G
Core 2 duo T5800 (2 ghz, 800 mhz fsb, 2 mb L2 cache) Code name Merom socket P
4GB DDR2 667 mhz
mobile Chipset intel cantiga PM45
Maximum quantity memory 8 GB
FSB supported speed : 533, 667, 800
Geforce 9600M GT 512 DDR3 which rocks at 660/925/1650 79°C top.
So here is my question, Will I be able to change my processor in the future ?
If i will, what kind of processor could be allowed then ? Same FSB ? same socket ? same code name ? And until which frequencies can i reasonably go to without changing the cooling system ?
thanx in advance -
And as memory, Could I put speedy DDR2 800 mhz with low latencies ????
-
Tell me something.
How is it that your laptop has the ability to expand to 8GB?
Acer to my knowledge stated that the max. supported ram is 4Gb.
Oh I know the chipset can handle it, but this is mostly a limitation because of the BIOS, and due to the fact that Acer 5930G ships with 2 RAM slots (the latter can be easily overcome with time when 4gb modules for notebooks start having a widespread use and prices drop).
So do elaborate a little as I'm curious.
As for putting 'speedy ram' with low latencies inside the laptop ... as long as it's DDR2, yes, but do yourself a favor and skip on it because you will experience less than 5% performance increase.
Instead maximize that RAM to 8GB (if you can cram it in) and begin using a 64bit OS.
To my knowledge, hypothetically I think you can upgrade the cpu to a P9500.
The chipset supports it, although given the fact your laptop came with a 800MhZ FSB, I wouldn't be surprised if it was hardware limited not to accept 1066Mhz FSB cpu's like P9500. -
well, first, thanx for your fast response.
So concerning 8 gb maximum allowed ram, it's what EVEREST ultimate tells me about the chipset PM 45 and yes, for sure, i don't think it's possible or useful yet. Now, for the 800 mhz DDR2 i'm agree on the fact that it would be probably not much of an improvment. Seems logical i'm gonna do myself a favor and forget it.
processorly speaking, I wouldn't be surprised by a 800 mhz fsb hardware limitation too so i thought about taking a 800 fsb processor with 3 or 4 mb L2 cache...I'm seraching for potential processors who could match in this list...
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html
i don't know much about mobile processors compatibility yet so if you have an advice i'll take it ;-) -
Let's leave the maximum ram capacity for another time when 4Gb modules for notebooks become more widespread and lower in price (as I said earlier though, switching to 800Mhz Ram module isn't going to really boost performance ... so maximizing the RAM by using the cheaper speed is the way to go ... unless the 800Mhz DDr2 version becomes cheaper and more used compared to the 667Mhz version).
Given the fact PM45 chipset can support 8GB (I think someone mentioned even 16GB), it's up to Acer on whether they will write a BIOS for larger RAM support (unless the BIOS 1.23 which can be downloaded and installed for 5930G from Acer's website already supports it and we don't know it).
Fact of a matter is that Acer never writes down the details anywhere on what the new BIOS version does exactly (at least I was unable to find anything).
As for the cpu ... well like I said, the chipset supports cpu's that are: SocketP (478 pin)/ 1066Mhz FSB ( http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=35515)
Hypothetically, there shouldn't be issues switching from C2D Txxxx cpu to C2D Pxxxx cpu, but at the same time I would be concerned about potential hardware limitations (although seriously I don't think that it's an issue in this particular case).
My own 5930G came with PM45 chipset and a Core2Duo P7350 cpu (entry Centrino2 with 1066Mhz FSB ... 2.0Ghz per core), and I was under the impression the motherboard could take a QuadCore given the fact the chipset/socket/pins/fsb are compatible.
Instead, it turns out that despite the fact my socket/pin layout/fsb are identical to the one that QC uses, some of the QC pins apparently operate on different electrical properties which essentially means they wouldn't work in 5930G regardless of chipset compatibility (the 5930G would essentially need a motherboard refresh).
It's a hardware limitation most likely on Intel's part because 5930G was released about 2 months prior to QC's. -
Very interesting...It's nice to talk to someone who knows his subject !!!
Yes , Acer are not very conversational about their new bios versions...but they 're cheap too ;-)
Well, it's too bad for the mobile Quad compatibility issue it would have been too great to be real. So, as you said earlier in the topic, theorically, we can go up to X9100 3,06 ghz admitting the cooling system can handle it. Well, i don't think i'll go this high but in a few months, i think i'll try one maybe 2,53 ou 2,6 ghz...the P9500 seems to be a quite reasonable choice.
I was wondering...Is the increase of power consumption for example from 35 to 45 Watts could be a problem ? As a funny thing, the more powerful P9500 with its 45 nm consumes less than T5800 65 nm...(25 W vs 35 W)
Last question, is a 64 bit OS a real improvment ???
A frog from france ;-) -
Corcerning my laptop, it is not labelled "centrino 2" but just "centrino" so i'm not very sure concerning the 1066 mhz FSB support...
-
The P9500 has a 35 W consumption my mistake
Well, in the intel PM45 compatibility list there are only 1066 mgz processors despite mine is 800 mhz...who can do more can do less i guess.
-
Since i'm not very sure on the 1066 fsb support or limitation issue
In this list, ( http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html)
i've found the T9500 800 mhz fsb which seems to be a good compromise and scores nearly as high as P9500 in 3Dmark 2006. Seems to be a safe choice, no ? -
The PM45 chipset will accept 800FSB cpu's if they share the same socketP (478pin) config (cpu compatibility thread on this site also states that fact ... of course it also states the QC is compatible ... but as I said, that one appears to be a separate case).
The P9500 to my knowledge operates on 25W (all Pxxxx cpu's do).
The Extreme versions (X9xxx) operate mostly on 35W and apparently the chipset can take those too ... the Quad Cores are a different story though for the already mentioned reasons (although in my personal opinion, it's quite idiotic the mobo wouldn't take a QC given the fact the chipset is identical ... I think Intel should have properly marked these Montevina chipsets that don't support QC given the fact the 'newer' ones are the same, apart from apparently being suitable for how some of the pins operate).
Jumping to P9500 would most likely be a better choice in my opinion because that way you go to lower Wattage (which is better for the battery, it produces less heat) and still gain a pretty decent boost as far as speed per core is concerned (500Mhz more per core).
The extreme editions are not exactly worth it in my opinion as they jump another 300Mhz boost over the P9500 and operate on a 35 Wattage (not to mention the fact they are terribly overpriced).
Going to 64bit is your decision.
Personally, I'm using Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit mainly for 3dsMax (because 64 bit environment is much more suitable for that application and works even faster than in 32bit ... not to mention the fact I will be able to use 4GB of RAM once I upgrade to it ... and possibly 8 if Acer writes bios support for it).
Essentially, you get to utilize your hardware to the maximum in a 64bit OS (if the application supports the environment of course and taking advantage of multi-core cpu-s).
The heatsink should be able to handle 25W and 35W without issues.
45W on the other hand is a different story.
This is one of the reasons why 5930G is limited to supporting QC, as they were primarily meant for 17" laptops with better cooling systems (and apparently the Montevina mobo refresh which is a 'proper' one compared to ours)
EDIT:
The T9500 would indeed be the 'safe' choice.
But at the same time, I would try to gather more info before purchasing it. There is no reason your mobo shouldn't support P9500 given the fact it operates on a lower wattage, so the power requirements would be lower. The socket and pin layout are identical, and as for FSB ... the PM45 by default supports 1066Mhz.
Don't rush into anything though.
We should gather more info. -
As usual, it's a real pleasure to read you.
In fact, at first, i was going for finding how to overclock my cpu but the setfsb programmer finally told me it was impossible with the acer 5930G since the Clock generator RTM875N-606-VD on-board seems to be locked. Then the only solution left was to change processor, well why not, i can't wait to disassemble my lap piece by piece ;-) But you're right, i have the 5930G acer service book and it says Penryn cpu's are supported from 667 to 1066 fsb (as well as 667/800 DDR 2 ram) so after all why mine shouldn't take 1066 mhz.
i guess i'll wait to be sure. I saw a P9600 2,8 ghz (1066, 6mb, 25W) 2600 points at 3dmarks, last Pxxxx before extreme over-priced versions.
Well, thanx for all your responses, very kind of you it's time to sleep in france but i'll keep on watching this thread -

In any event ... Kallogan ... yes, as I already mentioned there is no reason your system wouldn't support a P9500 or P9600.
So going with either of those (if the price difference isn't too large) will be fine.
Can you let me know where you intend to buy the cpu from?
I was looking at ebay myself, and the P9600 is still not available in UK for example ... the P9500 is though (for about £160)
Actually, I think I found a P9600 that was to be sent from China or Japan ... not sure from where exactly, and that a total price for it was about $150. -
P9600 seems to run at 2,66 ghz not 2,8 and is far too expensive from what i've seen. But I saw on a website its introduction price should be 348 $ (???) but i can't find it anywhere on sale until now. It's not easy to find mobile cpu retailers. I let you know if i find something...
-
P9600 Planned to be released on Dec 28, 2008. It's a very recent one. I wonder whether the mobo can support it.
-
i think i'll choose between P9500 or T9500 (if i'm not courageous about the fsb lottery ;-)) since it's the better price-compatibility-performance gain ratio for the moment. We'll see if other infos can change that.
-
Stick to P9500 in terms of upgrade in that case because P9600 won't really provide a noticeable boost.
For some reason, Intel (and many companies that make laptops) way overcharge the very small differential between the cpu's. -
refreshing...
http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_nkwZP9600QQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZR40QQ_mdoZ
Actually P9600 seems not too expensive between 210 $ and 245 $ on ebay. -
i think i'll go on this one, whatever it works or not, after all i can resell it nearly the same price if issue there is on my lap. That's the beauty of ebay.
-
Indeed.
P9600 should be a good choice in that case.
Btw, if I may ask, are you in UK or US?
Because if you're ordering it from UK and are in UK, you are getting a better deal compared to buying P9500 from UK's ebay section.
But a not of caution, I think you also have to include the tax and customs (which might bump up the price a lot).
Not sure about that entirely, but it's a possibility (that is if you are not in US). -
Hi, someone asked me this and I need the answer. Can someone help me...?
It's the question:
"
hi, I have a problem with my acer aspire 5930G
I really prefer xp instead of vista.
and when I was trying to formate the computer with my windows xp home edition CD, I get a blue screen.
wich told me that windows where shutting down, because the computer could be in danger, and that the problem was a virus or a problem with the harddrive.
but when I install linux on it, there is no problem, so now Im stuck with linux(wich I cant use for any games in the whole world)and I could really use some advice now.
" -
Have yout tried vista
I mean it's better than linux for running games, and it comes with the laptop, so you shouldn't have problems -
He can bypass this issue by going into the BIOS and setting AHCI to IDE.
That will allow XP to be installed.
But if he will want to re-enable SATA (which would be recommended), then he'll have to install the SATA drivers.
Another poster posted a link to the sata drivers that will work in XP.
Here they are:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...s/7zim06ww.exe
The ones from Intel site won't work right away (apparently a previous version of sata drivers has to be installed, otherwise, the ones from Intel site will report an error that the system doesn't meet minimum requirements).
Also check Page 13 of this thread.
Look for my post that contains links to drivers.
Your friend will first need to install Chipset drivers (once XP loads up) before he installs the SATA drivers, and then he can install everything else.
My suggestion would be that he first takes care of the Chipset, then SATA, followed by the gpu, sound card (if he wants to retain subwoofer functionality, he has to download the drivers from Acer site for 5930G ... they will work in XP), then of course the modem, LAN and finally Wifi.
Once all of the drivers have been installed, have him restart the laptop and boot into XP again.
Then restart the laptop, go to bios and change from IDE to AHCI.
It can sound a bit complicated, but actually it's not -
Well, Deks, I'm french and here are offers i've found on ebay france :
P9500 at 200 euros
P9600 at 210 euros
and finally a T9800 at 2,93 ghz at 398 euros for the fun.
all offers are in "buy it now" come from the same gold seller and include "free shipping" as it is said. The seller seems to be based in Taiwan and to sell his processors all over the world so i guess he's on ebay uk or us too.
P9600 seems to be very affordable. -
True.
I think you can go for it.
Given the fact there is only a 10 EUR difference between P9500 and P9600 ... I'd go for the P9600.
Also make sure to post some tests so we can see what kind of a difference was made in some games and all.
If it's not too much trouble of course.
There is a possibility that gaming performance will experience a boost.
Despite the fact that gaming relies primarily on gpu's ... better/faster cpu's improve performance as well.
Realistically speaking, there is a possibility you might expect a 5 to 10 FPS increase (the 6MB cache on the P9600 will make sure to provide such a performance increase coupled with the fact the said cpu operates on higher 1066 FSB, and of course has 600MhZ increase in raw speed per core).
A 5 - 10 FPS increase would actually be pretty good.
It's about 10 to 20% difference overall, but in some games, this difference might be all you need to improve performance.
Also the faster cpu will definitely provide far better results in apps such as 3dsMax (especially if you put it in a 64bit environment).
Hm ... once I get to UK and start settling down, I'll probably get myself that cpu as well, along with more RAM.
