I'm trying to repair an acer aspire 6920g for a friend.
I cleared the vents at the fan unit of dust and clogged up dirt.
then used alcohol solutions to clean the cpu's thermal compound and applied some new thermal compound.
problem is the power on the laptop keeps resetting at the windows vista screen.

i've a funny feeling after researching the forum, that it a cpu or hdd problem.

any ideas on how to fix this community?

    And hi as well.

techie by trade but just learning the ropes

Check out what happens if you boot Ubuntu from USB - check SMART status of the HDD in question.
If it even works fine it's not the CPU (although I'm pretty sure that it's isn't the CPU anyway)

If I were you I'd start with reinstalling Windows after running Linux from USB drive for testing.

i tried to reinstall windows 7 64bit and 32bit from 2 different cd's not a usb stick and both failed when they tried to install after the windows 7 screen.

i'll try alt +f10 to restore the system but have a feeling the motherboard is failing somewhere but may be wrong.

any other ideas what could be the cause of the problem?

    further update.

I've read that the motherboard for the 6920g has a problem with NEC TOKIN cap

this controls the power storage and seemingly needs to be replaced as a similar toshiba laptop has the same problem and the same cap.

does anyone know if this is easy to replace?

Not for you. It requires a specialized equipment and can't be done at home (see here).

Well i changed the oe907 chip with 4 x smd tantalum 470uf 2.5v capacitors and the light comes on as it always did and the fan starts but the bios screen doesn't appear on the monitor.

taking the oe907 off was a bit of an ordeal with a soldering gun

i think the esr capacity is too much with 4 chips as it's 1880

so i'll take 2 off and it should be 940 where the oe907 chip is 900
