Hello everyone
I feel like I'm going slightly mad with this laptop now. This is my third thread on the same laptop and no doubt if 'powerfull499' reads this he'll instantly recognise its me again and think I've gone insane, haha!![]()
But on a serious note, I've been plagued with this problem for the past month and a half at least, so much so that the laptop has spent the last 3 weeks with Acer and their technical support team in Plymouth (I only got it back last week).
The laptop was sent off with a fault to the screen. It intermittently flickers, mainly when the screen is moved, but sometimes not. The laptop was sent off to Acer 3-4 weeks ago and was returned last week. A report was returned with the laptop and reads as follows:
Problem Description:
SYSTEM FUNCTION - SYSTEM FAIL TO FLASH BIOS
Repair Description:
STORAGE - OPTICAL DEVICE WILL NOT READ/WRITE
Diagnosis/Repair Details:
fitted new ODD and middle cover
Spare Part(s) Replaced:
ODD HLDS SUPERMULTI DRIVE 12.7
COVER.MIDDLE.W/MMN/EKEY-BD
As you can imagine, this report left me completely perplexed but I assumed that somewhere within that they had fixed the screen problem and left me with a fully functional laptop again. And of course I'd been without it for 3 weeks and just wanted to turn it on again!! lol (On a sidenote, I had asked them to check the disk drive also, because back when I first got it, it struggled to read any type of disk. This explains the apparent replacement disk drive).
Anyway, its back and with just short of a week gone since then, its quite apparent that the problem remains. It normally starts flickering (or stops) when the screen is moved along its hinge but this time I was listening to iTunes, only for the screen to randomly start flickering.
Up until this point I'd been unable to show anyone else the flickering as it only seems to play up for me, so I jumped at the chance when it started flickering on its own and turned on my digital camera. I have actually managed to record a short video of the flickering and have since uploaded it onto Youtube.. simply because I need help!! The video can be found below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlW9e4fvCJY
I know the videos short, but as you can imagine its such as intermittent fault that its all but impossible to get anyone to see it other than myself. What the video does do though is prove that I'm not talking rubbish or going insane looking for fault!! haha
So again, I've come back here in search of assistance. The help I've had and seen here in the past has been top notch so I've come straight back in the hope that this fault can be solved without another extended holiday for my laptop in Plymouth. I'm a student and I'm coming towards the end of my courses at college and so another 3 weeks without it would be a nightmare. The laptop is under warranty until August however, so there would be time to send it back in the future, should the need arise.. hopefully not!![]()
Sorry its a lengthy post but I'm hoping that its detailed enough to get the point across properly.
Thankyou!!

sounds like a bad ground in the lcd cable. the entire cable should be replaced.

Thanks for the suggestion!
I thought it would be something to do with that. Having already mentioned the problem to Acer (and sending the bloody thing off to them over the entire Easter period) I was hoping they would also think of something like this and test it but its looking like a return trip to Plymouth for it. I just hope if I do decide on that it doesn't take them another 3 weeks because its just not ideal!
Still open to any more suggestions but after hearing someone else say it might be the cable, I'm half tempted to return it.. again! -
Hi,
I have the same laptop and the screen flickering is driving me mad. I am just about to send it back to Acer for repairs for the second time in 9 months.
The flickering started initially after I had it for about 2 months and I sent it back eventually when it got progressively so bad that I couldn't bear it any longer.
The laptop was then returned to me supposedly fixed but a couple of weeks later it started flickering again.
So in the 9 months that I have owned it I have had about 3 months of it flicker free.
I am so careful when I take it out of the laptop bag and put it back in so I am confident that it is not me that is causing the fault.
I purposely bought this laptop thinking that the screen would be extremely durable because of the size of the hinges but was sadly mistaken.
And no need for me to get the video out because it flickers non stop all the time.
The "funny" thing is that I extended the warranty so now I have 4.25 years left.

Definitely sounds like an LCD cable.

You could also try replacing backlight inverter, might solve the flickering problem.

I think their question is how to get acer to repair it under waranty. . .

Hi. Sorry for slightly bumping this thread lol.... I was just reading through the thread again and it got me wondering.. did you ever solve the fault 'rcivlad'?
Back when I had the problem, I contacted Tesco (who I bought it off) and they agreed to take it off me for a full refund, and apparently there were no problems with Acer. I've since got the 8735G which I'm really happy with, but I'm still intrigued as to whether you solved it and what the problem was!
