Hey guys, i'm just wondering whether an external BluRay player would work with the Acer Aspire 7540? This laptop has: amd athlon II dual-core m300, 4gb ram, dvd super-multi DL drive, ATI Radeon HD graphics, and a 17.3" (16:9) HD+ LED LCD screen and HDMI output.

Firstly Super MultiDL is NOT a blu ray drive. Some versions of some models come with Blu ray and they are described differently. Buying bluRay as a 'factory fit' is currently the only really cost effective way to get it.
Increasingly you can download digital copies of films which is one reason most netbooks sell ok with no optical drive at all
I can think of no reason in theory that an external USB blueray drive would not work assuing it is recognised by the OS, However you will need to upgrade or replace your video playing application to support the BluRay codecs etc. You also need to use official WHQL video and audio drivers etc.
The cost and ugliness of all this gets pretty steep just to output blu-ray to laptop screen. And if outputting to a TV via HDMI you could buy a cheaper stand-alone player.
As quantities of replacement blu-ray drive parts come available (bit of a shortage of the blue laser part at the moment) the costs may get a lot more reasonable. If you laptop had a blu ray optionon a higher spec model it is worth asking with it someone what model is in there (device manager) or checking in the service manual for the proper part numbers.
