I have one of these and could not be happier. Really, really great machine, especially when you factor in its amazingly low cost. Runs anything I've thrown at it rather happily, including all of my games.
It appears that the RAM Acer shipped with it is DDR3 1066. Since having a bit more performance available never hurts, do you by any chance happen to know whether it will take DDR3 1333? Maybe something like the following
Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 Laptop Memory Model KHX1333C7S3K2/4G
By the way, is that extra full-size internal PCIe slot fully operational?

as far as i see it should handle 1333 perfectly fine.
Although why upgrade? The 1066 is an overkill as is lol
The PCIE i dont know .. i want to get more into it, possible a slot for a good improvement -
My buddy got an AS7551G-5056, which is identical to the AS7551G-5821 but with a Phenom II N830 instead of an N930. He is enjoying it a lot but now is jealous of me and regrets not having paid a bit more for the quad-core. He found some supplier of mobile CPUs in HK or somewhere and now is wondering whether he can just put an N930 in the laptop.
He tried opening the laptop from below (by removing the screws around the edge of the base) only to realize that he needed to first take the keyboard out from the top or something like that. But now both he and I are scratching our heads about how to do it. Any ideas? We just found out that, unlike HP or Dell, Acer does not have any service guides available at their site. Cheap bast***s.
The more I use my 7551G the more I thank the heavens for Newegg and their fantastic prices. This laptop is wonderful and a real bargain. I'm glad I didn't spend hundreds more on one of those silly i5 or i7. -
Not the G version but AS5551-2450. Every time I reboot I get a Power Management Failure - Not sure what if anything is missing... so I disabled it. in services an set to MANUAL... Windows 7 Pro. - any idea to fix appreciated.
------------------------------------
fix was removed all the Acer Drivers..... via Control panel, reboot an let M$ Drivers be loaded.... no more problem.
then I have upgraded to latest Bios...
Love it. (PS: i did not like the Dell Drivers that Acer had used.) -
I'm not by any means an expert in the matter, but it sounds like there might be something wrong with the battery, Snuffy. Those "power management" problems sound like the motherboard not getting enough juice (amps or volts). I have never experienced the problem myself, though.
The problem can be that you've got a deffective battery pack. But it can also be (though rather rare, as far as I understand) that the battery has been conditioned in the wrong way by a long succession of very short charge/discharge cycles (like in keeping it plugged for 15 minutes and then unplugging it for another 10, and so on for a long while).
It can also be that there is a problem either with the PSU (the external brick) or the internal circuitry interfacing that PSU with the motherboard. I would think, however, that if the problem were battery related you would see different things when the machine is plugged and when it is running on batteries.
Do note however that what is least likely is a software problem (as in that service you disabled being screwed). But it is still possible (isn't everything?). So, if for some fortuitous accident the software were the problem, you can test for it by simply reinstalling the whole OS (from the recovery disks that you can create with the Acer utilities).
You can test for a deffective battery or PSU by putting a different pack or power brick in the laptop. I know that it is easier said than done, but, since the AS5551's battery (as well as its entire guts, probably) is identical to the one in the AS4251, AS4551, AS4551G, AS5551G, AS7551 and AS7551G, perhaps you know someone that already has one of those models and can lend you their battery pack for a little while. I believe that the battery packs and the PSU's used by the AS4741, AS5741 and AS7741 (the intel variants of the very same laptpo) should also work.
In any event, if testing for any of the variables is too complicated or simply impossible, and the laptop is still under warranty, I would call the manufacturer, describe the problem to them and, if relevant, send the laptop to them ASAP. -
Anyone here know how i could possibly overclock the Phenom II Quad
-
In Aspire 7741G there are used Clock generators: ICS9LPRS480BKLFT / RTM880N-796-VB-GRT, maby that same are used in 7551G. There aren't exactly those pll in SetFSB but dle closest used for AMD systems are: ICS9LPRS471AKL, ICS9LPRS475BGLF, ICS9LPRS476HKLF, ICS9LPRS477BKL and from realtek RTM870T-691. Try them maby You wiil have luck. Oh try AMD OverDrive aswell, somethimes it allow oc mobile cpu.
-
I cant find ANY of those but the BKL & The HKLF in setfsb and it gives an error when i click gbet FSB
-
-
it doesnt do anything. even if i go into diagnosis tab. It tells me

Hmm, maby this model have supplied clocks like 5553g, according schematic for 5553g all necessary clocks for cpu are taken from south bridge and there are no external PLL. Maby that is in this case that why setfsb read nothing.
-
Also; Do you or anyone know why my windows 7 is so slow.. even with a fresh install/fresh drivers bootup time is long, sometimes it bogs down. No viruses or anything ..

Bought mine 9/24/10, I think they changed the hard drive. Windows experience index is 5.9:

JUST GOT ONE!
First night on it and its amazing.
Such a steal from newegg, got the combo with the fan and usb hub. 800$ shipped and it took 2 days to get here.
I downloaded PC Wizard and trying to download the AMD overclock tool, the link on first page is broken though.
Cant wait to get a bigger hard drive although its been amazing fast and very smooth. The picture is amazing and everything is so clear.
Just downloaded starcraft and the disc drive sounds sort of loud, its kind of unstable it seems. Wondering if others notice this?
Starcraft is ridiculous, my other laptop which just pooped out on me could hardly handle it and now it looks like a different game. I have 7 tabs open and I am playing 4v4 seamlessly!!!
Well anyways i did alot of research and I noticed this site before buying so good job so far lets keep it going. -
2.) While using Laptop I left it unplugged until system saved and shutdown, plugged in adapter waited about 2 min, turned system back on.... never used until indicated 100% charged.... takes forever to do anything...
3.) finally I purchased a NEW AC Adapter .... charged the battery once. and NO Problems since.... average time for Battery is now over 2h:30m and No Power Management problem.
Thanks mjunhy -
I just put one of those new 64GB Samsung SSD's in mine and the sucker is now flying like a crazy sonuvab**ch. And it is still using the stock DDR3 1066 memory. Believe me when I say that so far this laptop has turned out to be the best investment I've ever made.
I can't wait to get my hands on some low-latency DDR3 sodimms running at 1333 to make it go even faster. I might even settle for a standard latency 1333 8GB kit, if I can find a good one at a decent price. Do let me know if any of you has had or gets any experience in that regard (DDR3 1333 with a Phenom N930, that is), because the question remains in my mind whether it is worth it. -
Having some trouble with Starcraft atm on the Aspire. First week I had it I was impressed of how easily it handled ultra settings. Now i have it toned down to medium/ high settings for performance but for some reason im getting these weird freezes.
I read some where that this laptop has a shady wireless card and i am thinking that might be the problem but its happening more and more now and its driving me absolutely insane.
I would hard wire it into the router but its clear across the house and I want to be sure that its the wireless causing it because I am thinking it might be something else.
So anyways it starts when I put the slightest bit of load like shift + build (which allows for a queue when building). And sometimes out of now where really but always when im playing SC. But it will freeze the sounds and do the repeat noise over and over and then not even 10 secs later it freezes, it doesnt black out, but instead just freezes for anywhere from 30seconds to 1 minute. sometimes it will snap out of it and keep going other times it will finally drop me and im screwed.
Could it be the wireless card?
Im fixing to download the driver from AMD to see if it fixes anything but no clue what else could be causing this.
Like i said when i first got it, every game was spectacular and no misses, but now every time i play it it gets worse and worse.
Please help me before my RMA is up -
I would recommend the "StarCraft Forum" to find why StarCraft is failing, and Not Acer Forum on why Acer is failing... StarCraft as other Games has many failures until you get the GAME Set properly to your system.
-
I see what you mean but I am just wondering if anyone else notices a weaker internet connection? I now notice it happens when im on the web. Im thinking that its got to be the wireless card. It is just kind of shady because it locks everything until finally reconnecting(I suppose that is what happens).
Another thing I am looking into is a new harddrive. I am wanting to spend somewhere around 100$ and have seen that hitachi and seagate make a pretty decent score at newegg. Wondering if anyone else has replaced it and what are the reesults. -
I replaced my HDD with a top-notch MLC solid-state drive (64GB, $150). The original 500GB Western Digital HDD was put in a high quality external USB enclosure ($30). The results were and still are splendid.
But I suspect that you are looking for more capacity rather than for better performance. So, the route I took might not be your cup of tea.
I have no problems with the machine at all, even while gaming. However, I reinstalled the operating system from scratch and streamlined it to my total satisfaction, which amounted to not only avoiding the installation of any kind of crap and getting rid of any superflous functionalities, but also getting the latest drivers (either from the OEM site or, if thus unavailable, from acer itself) for every component. -
Installed 64g SSD from Costco, $89, last generation SSD, Windows experience index went up to 6.7! SC2 looks and runs great! Boot time 19 seconds.
Over on the Newegg reviews, Ron talks about installing an OCZ Vertex II SSD and getting a 7.3 HD WEI.

I have a weird problem with this thing 7551g-5821. If i shut down and leave it off for more than 30 min/1 hour than when i want to power it on it gives me a BSOD the 7e ones and it reboots it self .. After the reboot everything works fine. if i restart it manualy or power it on after 5/10min of not working, everything is ok, no bsod. So i tried every single thing that i know: mem test, hard disk check, starting up with/out battery pack, changing the mem modules with one another, instaled the latest drivers from the acer's website, fresh instal with format of the disk i formated the whole disk left with no particions and did a fresh instal of Windows Ultimate x64 and still this weird problem occurs.
Please help i don't know what to do anymore and i can't call acer cause i brought the laptop in my home country and they do not give support here.
I apologize for my english -
FACABATE: if I understand correctly, the machine blue-screens on you when it is cold but boots up nicely when it is warm, literally. If so, it quite likely is a hardware problem (a defective component). I cannot think of a single piece of software that could get picky about whether a component has been warmed up or not. The 7E errors are "system thread exception" related, which means that you've probably got a driver/hardware incompatibility. However, the part about the laptop being warm or cold is rather strange. Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for everything (chipset, video card, network card, etc.)? I would especially worry about the chipset drivers, which are included in the ATI graphics drver package that is available at Acer's site (but are not included with the generic drivers available at ATI's site).
MUNKI: Then I'm glad I got the Samsung SSD instead of an OCZ, Kingston or Intel, because my HDD WEI grew all the way up to 7.6 -
Thanks -
My question to you is " What do you have the HDD setting at?" are you talking about "SLEEP" or "Hybernation".
can you post your Power option here.... big difference between the two.
I have NO problems at all with mine but then I DO NOT USE HYBERNATION. -
I don't know if this is refering to my problem but in case it is I'm not talking about hibernation or sleep but shuting down the computer and not working on it for more than 1hour. The Hdd settings are by default Sata Ahci mode, and the bsod occurs when the four squares colide

Faca: it really does sound like that laptop has a serious physical defect. Based on your description, it seems logical to think that some critical component (could be anything, including the northbridge or a power-management chip) needs to be warmed or cooled before it can function correctly. Although really unusual, I think that something like this happening is not that far-fetched.
What might be happening is that some particular driver is not able to establish communication with the defective component as the OS is starting up, which results in the latter bluescreening on you with a 7E error.
I really think you should send that machine to back to Acer under warranty. -
I have very little faith in ACER fixing anything... my personal is they send you back LESS than you sent to them.... I also have better performance in using
THE MOST NON-ACER DRIVERS. The more Acer I get rid of the better the system works... and WEI is DUH - so easy to fix not worth the effort... want a hi WEI then buy it... now 0x0000007E. is normally a MEMORY Problem.
swap memory... or remove 1 or the other..... ACER is known to install ????? chunks of Memory.... PS: I also do not like SAMSUNG Memory in my Acers... it seems replace memory with anything except Samsung and 99% of all my Acer problems - are gone.....1% is a defective part. -
Has anyone who opened one of these up checked to see if Acer is still using MXM for the chassis?
I'd be compelled to get a 7552G with Phenom X920 BE if I could upgrade the GPU to a real HD5850 or HD5870. -
Here's the link:
Products -
Yup I've seen the specs already. You can get a 7552G with X920 BE and a Mob. "HD5850" now (outside the U.S.) but Acer uses GDDR3 for the VRAM, bottlenecking the performance down to to the levels of a Mob. HD5830.
If Acer used GDDR5 they would have had a pretty nice inexpensive gaming rig...three RAM slots, two HDD, a 1600x900 screen, and a possibly unlocked CPU. -
I purchased my 7551 back in August and was very pleased with it. It's purpose was to be a tool used to communicate with family and friends back home as I study abroad. Of course, eventually I wanted to use it for gaming when I had some down time.
I recently have been trying to play Borderlands and my initial problem occurred. After about 5-10 minutes, the game would completely freeze and after another 10 seconds the screen would go black and the laptop would make a hard buzzing noise for a few seconds. My only choice, when this occurs, is to manually shut it down. At first I thought it was just a problem with Borderlands or Steam so I tried Starcraft 2 but same problem occurred. Guild Wars and WoW do the same thing after varying amounts of time.
I've update my drivers and have done various things to try and fix the problem. Most of the things I've done have been suggested for other laptops but I thought it was worth a shot. Got a cooling pad because someone said it was overheating, discharged the power in the ram which I've never heard of before, and even ran AVG PC Tune-up which ended up fixing 300+ registry errors.
Problem still occurs and I'm out of ideas. I am now getting indicators as to when the game will crash though. When I was trying Borderlands and WoW again I could see flickers across the screen which would increase over time until finally it froze. Not sure what that means.
If anyone has any other suggestions that would be great. If you need more information just let me know. I'm trying to fix this myself for now only because it would cost me a boat load to send this laptop back over seas to get repaired. Also, if this was the wrong place to post let me know as well and I'll move it right away. -
Why don't you use HWMonitor to monitor CPU and GPU temps.
Cooling pad may not be enough it the thermal compound is improperly applied. -
These were the temperatures I got right when I started up WoW. They originally started out at 45-47C for the processor and a little cooler for the graphics card. In game, I ran around for a little bit and the temperatures crept closer and closer to 60C, one time actually going over 60C. Just from a quick google search, I take it these temperatures aren't that great, right? What I find funny is that WoW has been running in the background for a good 30 minutes and as long as I don't switch over to it my laptop does fine.
So if Downloads is right and this is a problem with the application of the thermal compound then there is nothing I can do but send it in to get repaired? I'm not computer savvy enough to attempt any hardware repair myself -
With those temperatures (that are very low) it doesn't look suspicious.
Use Furmark to see how hot the GPU gets? 54*C looks suspiciously low. -
Stability test with FurMark:
Three minutes after the test I ran HWMonitor:
Saw the temperatures, tried to test a game to see how high I could get the GPU again but the computer crashed one minute after starting the game. -
Are there more people having those problems??? Or other critical problems?
I'm planning on buying a Acer Aspire 5553G-N934G64MN, which is sort of alike the one in the OP, but with 15,6" screen and 640GB hdd. -
I found on my 7551, if I only used the Windows 7 drivers and not ACERS. I had far less problems..... infact after removing all drivers, then reboot and allowing Windows 7 to install only Drivers... I have NO PROBLEMS...
-
I had 5553G with 640HDD and 4GB DDR3@1066MHz and here is coming the question. After performing windows experinence index the scores are almost the same like the stok 7551
processor 6.9
RAM 5.9
Gaming and aero 6.7
HDD 5.9
the question : why i had so low RAM score ? IS there any difference in 5553g and 7551 ? And if there is, what is the difference ?
P.S.
The temperature of CPU when Playing new Need for speed hot pursiut on max details is about 67-68 C
