    Welcome to the forums, Geomcnasty!
As Arminator posted, the Aspire 7720's Socket P and 965 chipset allow you to use Core 2 Duos with a maximum FSB (front side bus) speed of 800 MHz.
    This means the T5xxx, T7xxx, T8100, T8300, T9300, and T9500 are fully usable, with the X7800, X7900, and X9000 as theoretically compatible.
The fastest you'll be able to go is 2.6 GHz with a T9500, with 2.8 GHz theoretically possible if the BIOS recognizes the X7900 or X9000.

DO NOT GO WITH EXTREME SERIES !!! As I stated in my http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/500665-aspire-7720g-major-upgrade.html thread, Extreme series will be recognized but they will probably work on the minimal clock. I tried X9000 and it worked on 1.2GHz all the time, multiplier was stuck at x6 and there was nothing I could do about it. I contacted Acer and they told me that Extreme series are not supported on this chipset, probably because of the higher TDP. The fastest CPU for your 7720 is T9500 @ 2.6GHz.
