I recently purchased the Acer Aspire 7720, and decided to upgrade from Vista to Windows XP. SP2 over the weekend. I followed the instructions laid out in http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=190581, I installed the XP drivers but did not reinstall any of the ACER software programs such as Launchpad, Acer ePower Management and the like.
Everything seemed to be fine for a day or two but over the past day, the system has crashed three times.
According to the freeware Speedfan:
HDD is at 28C
Temp at 71C (I don't know if this is too hot but I have noticed that the fan is on all the time),
Core 0 at 25C
Core 1 at 29C.
I don't know what details to include except to say that the 7720 runs with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5450
3GB of DDR2 ram,
320 GB HDD,
Mobile Intel Graphic Media Accelerator X3100 - Mobile Intel 965 Express chipset. (As an aside, I've noticed that there are two drivers under display adapter, one for PCI bus 0, device 2, function 0, the other PCI bus 0, device 2, function 1).
and unchanged BIOS -- v 1.22.
I'm at a loss, and your assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

upgrade your BIOS to ver 1.33
see if that helps
the OLD bios has problems bringing the fan back on after the system has been in sleep or standby
this link has some info.. BTW the 5315 is based on the same MB

The fans-runnig-always issue could be what BigO says though.. -
As suggested, I installed the newest BIOS, v1.34, and the problem was resolved. As a precaution, I also installed Notebook Hardbook Control, and all is well.
The CPU is running at 35C, and it is -- at least for now -- purring away.
Thank you. -
LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS STARTING THE LAPTOP w/ ver 1.34

Your offer Bigozone is generous, and appreciated. Thank you.
As an aside, I do have a question. When I installed XP, I've noticed that I now have two drivers under display adapter, one for PCI bus 0, device 2, function 0, the other PCI bus 0, device 2, function 1. Is this right?
Also, while I realize that the Mobile Intel 965 Express chipset is integrated, hence not ideal for gaming, are there ways to improve performance? I have a trusty old Compaq by my side that has an ATI Mobility Radeon Xpress 200 that performs far better playing the same soccer game, running smoothly and with no choppiness. Can't say the same for the Intel 965. I expected better from a newer product. -
take a screenshot of your device manager...
so i can see what devices you have installed/ and see what is missing!!!
i've played HALO1 on my 5315,, while not at any great resoultions or framerates
have you installed the CHIPSET DRIVERS and the VIDEO DRIVERS for the i965 chipset from the intel web site??
you might try that.... new drivers can't hurt
