    Acer Aspire 7720G - Boot / shutdown problem

    Just bought Acer Aspire 7720G from eBay, described as fully working. On receipt, installed a fresh copy of windows vista 32-bit. The installation went fine and windows started up as normal. Then, during the installation of various drivers from acer's website (chipset, audio, vga etc.) the windows spontaneously shut down. On restart, the laptop is freezing during various times, e.g. at Acer logo BIOS screen, or the black screen afterwards. If I enter BIOS menu, the laptop shuts down within 5 seconds; whereas if it froze during the windows startup, it stays on with CPU working seemingly forever. If left alone for ~15-30 minutes, it would then start up as normal and will work as normal for about 10-15 minutes before shutting down and the story begins again.

    I searched the internet for possible solutions and found many people reporting similar faults. For example, in one cause this was resolved by updating the BIOS version. But my BIOS ver. is 1.45, which is the latest available on acer's website. In another case, it was resolved by reducing RAM, as apparently this model does not handle >3GB of RAM well. I have 2GB, so this soulution does not apply. In yet another case, spontaneous shutdowns were apparently caused by overheating, and solved by cleaning the CPU fan clogged with dust. My CPU fan looks very clean and I did not run any CPU-intensive applications when shutdowns happened.

    Peculiarly, when similar symptoms were reported by other people, they were caused by leaving the laptop switched off for several hours or overnight. In my case, in contrast, leaving it off seems to help. E.g. if it freezes during startup I can restart it as many times as I want without a pause - it will not start, whereas leaving it for c. 15 minutes seems to help as it will work for a short period afterwards.

    Did any Acer Aspire 7720G users experience similar problems? And does anyone have any ideas for a solution?

    whats the specs you got? how much price? is it used or new?

    why get 7720g when u can get a 7745g now

    i am 7720g user too running for 2yrs+ still going strong except a few hick ups

    No reply for some time on this issue. Did you work something out? I never had that kind of problems with my model, so I can't help you much. Did you try to run it only on battery or without it? Just a theory...

    Just returned the laptop for a full refund. Will not touch Acer again :(
