    Hi people,

I've a problem with my Acer Aspire 7730G. When I push the start button of the laptop, the screen stays black. The fan goes on for like 2 seconds, and shuts off then. All the lights are still on.
Does anyone know the solution for this?

    Thanks in advance.

can you see the Acer logo on startup? if so press F8 several times until you get into safe mode with networking, then restore it to a different time.

have you installed some drivers or received some windows update before black screen?

Nope, I don't see any logo, the screen doesn't light up even.

I didn't install any updates as far as I know.

have you access to an external monitor to check if its the laptops monitor that is not showing anything?

press repeatedly F12 when restart and change the BIOS settings to start from cd/dvd

download Avira Rescue System on a cd or usb and reboot, http://www.avira.com/en/download-start/product/avira-rescue-system

Read this guide as it seems to be a good tool, download this file to see of it helps, http://download.cnet.com/Prevx/3000-2239_4-10914524.html

set Win7 dvd and reboot and perform a repair install

I have such issue when I was playing with my GT240M - I`ve tried to change it with 6770M. When 6770M was installed, I had situation as you described. That is the first situation. The second: I just not properly installed GT240M in MXM slot. Thus, it can be defective/dying video card, broken screen cable, damaged MXM slot.

Have you changed something in the hardware of you laptop?

As Maro12 said, try to connect an external monitor. If it is not showing too, than, I think, this is dying video card. If that was not changed to another card, of course.

follow the other steps I said, sounds like a dead video card to me
do you hear any noise when its turned on? any lights on?

can you give full spec of your laptop?

Well, all the LED's are on. The fan in the top (proberbly from the graphics card) runs for like 2 seconds, and shuts of then. And how do I navigate in the BIOS when I can't see anything

Can't remember the specs, I will search for them.
    CPU: Intel Centrino.
GPU: nVidia GEFORCE 9600M GT (1GB).
    8GB RAM.

the good news is that your mother board is working, I guess the graphic card is dead and its not expensive to replace it
could this be like your laptop?
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Aspire-17-inch-Laptop-Premium/dp/B001G7PI44

on my Acer if i press fn+f6 the screen becomes black, see if it has been accidently pressed

have you been using it for playing games that desire a good graphic card?

Have you changed the card recently? As I and maro12 mentioned above - looks like dead/dying video card. Usual laptop acts so if there is no card attached in MXM slot - "it can not sense the card".

    @propolkin
i think our guess is right, its due to the graphic card, it can also be that it has be over heated during games and some cables are loose or even broken.
the best is to open the laptop and disassemble the graphic card and look carefully at the cables or any unusual on the card, place it back and restart the laptop to see if it helps, otherwise a new graphic card is the solution.

Yes, it may help, as helped to me at once with my old GT240M.

Yea, that's the laptop I have. FN+F6 does nothing :(.

And I've been using it to play games :).

    @Propolkin, I didn't change the card, and I'm afraid it's a dying card :(.

Try to take down the card from the slot, apply new thermal paste (with first of all cleaning the old one) and then install it back. Also you should try to dissamble whole laptop and re-connect display cable. If both of that are not working, than, 85% that it is dead vidro card.

laptops are not a good choice to play for long time as it generates huge amount of warm, especially games that take a lot of processes.
if I were you I only switch the graphic card, but be very careful with the display, personally I will not do anything with display in your case, until you have sorted out with the graphic card, as there are more things related to a screen.
you can find some videos on youtube showing how to change a graphic card, the process is simple and after reboot you need to install the driver. but take the old one out and use it to find a card that matches the size and slots, otherwise you can ask a dealer to help you find a suitable card.
