Hello, new here, first post. I recently bought an Acer Aspire 7741z to replace my dead dell(nice upgrade). While I love the Acer, it can get overloaded easily in games. I was looking for parts to upgrade my Dell, and found some good deals on i7s on eBay etc. I have looked at the specs, and it seems that the 2 core i7 CPUs are compatible w/ my HM55 chipset moboard. Same die, same socket. And intel shows that it is compatible w/ the HM55 chipset. Just wondering if I might run into any other problems, like drivers. I have built computers in the past, and repaired my own laptops successfully. But I am a bit out of touch w/ the new tech and all the variables. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Im not sure, the core I series has their gpu built into the cpu, unless your laptop supports this you might have problems,im sure someone with more knowledge will be of more help.

If the CPU microcode is not in the BIOS it may launch properly and work but it will most likely stop on each post with an information about unknown CPU. It will launch properly after you've confirmed it by pressing a button.
That said it will work if say BIOS recognizes Core i7 620M and you have Core i7 640M but if BIOS recognizes only Core i5s none of the Core i7s is likely to work.
I can't find the service manual to confirm if any Core i7s are supported so all you can to is to check if there were ant 7741s were offered. If not Core i7 won't work. -
Well, my Aspire has a p6100 cpu. And it does have the same graphics processing that the core i3/i5/i7 does. I know that the hm55 chipset does support the core iX series, but your right, that does not mean that the bios supports it. Didn't think of that. AFAIK, no 7741 came w/ a core iX series cpu. So this may be a defunct idea. I certainly don't want to brick my acer, so reflashing the bios w/ a different un-native bios is not going to happen. Bummer. I guess if I find a really good deal on a core i3/i5(like $40) I'll give it a try and see what happens.
Acer Aspire 7741z + core i7?
