Acer Aspire 8930G / 9650m GT video driver problem

I have bought nVidia GeForce 9650M GT 1GB DDR2 MXM II Graphics Card from ebay. Aspire 8930G is listed by the seller as one of the laptops that supports the card.

I have changed the card very carefully. My previous card was 9600m GS DDR2 512mb MXM II.

At the moment the laptop does recognize the card, however sees it as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

However when I try to install nVidia drivers from the nVidia website, the setup informs me the following: "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."


Has anyone tried 9650m GT with their Acer laptops? Did it work? Does anyone have a solution in my case? Thanks.

 

AFAIK no one's tried a 9650M GT on their Acer, namely b/c the 9650M GT isn't a card offered by Acer in the first place. I don't know where that seller gets off saying that it's compatible if it was never offered by Acer (I kinda did some research on Acer MXM stuff).
Best of luck giving it a spin, though! Try the LaptopVideo2Go.com modified INF, replacing the one in the Nvidia package. Might work.

Question, though - why bother with the DDR2 version of the 9650M GT when there are 9600M GTs with GDDR3 memory out there? Hate to say it, but the GDDR3 9600M GTs will probably be faster than your DDR2 9650M GT.

 

DUDE OMG!!! The video drivers from LaptopVideo2Go.com have worked!!!
They have this search where you can find drivers by Device Instance Path, which is PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_064C&SUBSYS_01451025&REV_A1\4&2F1C197E&0&0008 for 9650m GT. So I chose the OS system Win7x64. Installed, and it worked.

The reason I have bought 9650m GT 1gb DDR2 because it was only £80 and free delivery, but 9600m GT 512mb DDR3 was in range of £150 at the time and also free delivery.


So anyone who wants to upgrade their acer 8930G or perhaps similar models to 9650m GT, it is possible but specific drivers must be obtained from laptopvideo2go.com/drivers

I'll be honest, I have not tried any games yet, but the card is recognized as 9650m GT and I can now change resolution to 1080p. Which is more than convincing evidence for me. I shall post if any changes do occur.

to be honest it wasnt worth the upgrade
the 9650 is just a higher clocked 9600 and you could have just clocked the 9600 higher and saved your money

9600m gs to 9650m gt isnt really worth the effort tbh

Yeah, the 9600M GS is still the same core as the 9600M GT and 9650M GT, clocked even lower.
But who's to say that his 9600M GS would be able to hit the right clocks?
Worthwhile upgrade IMHO.

I think it was worth the upgrade, mainly for the MXM experience which was null in my case. I didn't want to buy an expensive card, to find out that it wasn't working. Ofcourse 9700m GTS would have been a much better upgrade, however I could not find it anywhere. Maybe in a years time I'll purchase 9700m model... meanwhile I think I've lost enough hair with this bad boy... I have been thinking of overclocking 9600m GS, however the 9650m GT seemed to be within my budged so, instead of overclocking my current card I have decided to give it a go. I also want to give the old 9600m GS to my causin who has a Samsung laptop with 8600m GT 256mb GDDR2 MXM II, and see how that goes.

I have played CSS with the new card, and it's running perfectly. I am very happy with the purchase. After the video drivers I have been getting little flickering on the screen which I have not noticed at first sight. To ASUS owners of M70Vn with 9650m GT card + Win7 it is a known problem.

It is fixed using the following program: PowerMizer Switch

Run it as an Admin, and hit the OFF button. After restarting the flickering is gone.


I don't think that I have found anymore problems with the card so far. If anything does changes I shall post asap.
