Has anyone had any problems with real slow wireless connections. I'm with BT and recently there seems to be a real slow down in my internet connection. Used to always be green with WoW, now it's just red. Doesn't matter if I use the LAN or go Wireless. Can anyone give me a guide on what I should be checking to try and sort the problem

    Hi all,

I received one of these yesterday, I'm liking it so far but am still on a honeymoon period. Dolby is screwy with games though, dunno if that relates to the game itself or speaker configuration.

I understand that if you buy an 8930g with 1 drive, it still has capacity for a second. Is that correct? If so, is there a guide anywhere on how to fit one?

My plan is to install a Compact Flash card with SATA adaptor as a second drive, in mind for Windows 7 and acheiving faster boot times / reducing disk write bottleneck.

I am bemused as to why the OS is 32-bit. Does anyone know if the Vista -> Windows 7 offer would cover 32-bit -> 64-bit, or would it be 32-bit for 32-bit?

    Thanks!

The x9100 is supported and is probably the best choice really as don't think you will see as much benefit with quad core at lower clock speed.

Do I need to have ITECIR installed if I have the 8930g without tv card?

Edit: Do I even need 'intel matrix storage technology' - seeing it looks like a RAID application and I only have 1 HDD?

Can anyone suggest why my 8930 is getting bad performance?

It's really cunkly and bad performance when trying to select items on the item or when scrolling on firefox (really noticeable) when my xp desktop has none of these issues.

I'm normally quite good with these issues but I have to admit I'm stumped on this one, my video drivers are up to date.

I need some pointers, I know this isn't normal and the system isn't even under any strain compared. I've disabled uneeded services etc and I don't even have many applications installed and all of the bloatware has gone.

Hi, is it a default install with vista and nothing else? You say you've disabled some services, was this before or after the bad performance? What is your CPU usage running at?

I had a similar problem which was made more frustrating by jerky BluRay playback.

    Idle memory usage was 30-35%.

I tried deleting all unecessary 'Bloat', tried memboost, and even uninstalled some of the programmes I installed - it never got any better and idling memory usage was still 15-25%

In the end I added a second drive and installed Vista from scratch. I then just added the necessary drivers and a fresh install of Arcade, and the system runs a lot faster and plays BD prefectly - and idle memory usage is now 2 - 4%.

The only problem was I could not use the OEM vista key on the new install and had to use a key from a now disused laptop.

I've added a few bits and bobs but its still the default install. I disabled services after getting this bad performance. My CPU usage is about 4% idle.

My idle memory usage is also around the 30-35% mark, I really don't want to have to reinstall Vista or even XP however.

Have you tried a 'restore' to the default Acer install.

    Just a suggestion.

If you feel inclined to do that, why not restore it and check how it runs - then if it's OK, re-install your programmes and check performance after each one.

(If you create a restore point before each programme install, you can go back to the previous state easily without a lot of hassle).

I have tried that actually. I got the same performance and that's both with and without my beloved creative suite and all my other programs etc.

Maybe I'm just too used to XP's lightning fast speed and the fact it just works.

I don't know what the actual problem is though. It's just that this thing should really go compared to my desktop which has 2 gigs less RAM, a slower CPU and a less powerful GPU but it doesn't (it's even probably worse seeing it can barely run firefox properly without me cringing and then instantly do some tasks on the desktop) and the only difference between the two is XP.

    I'm rather disappointed tbh.

Hi, so what are your power settings? Personally I'd never go near ff as I believe its not as good as it is cracked up to be and hardly a benchmark standard either. As I've said mine is all set to Acer and and Vista defaults, aside from tweaking the power settings, turning off auto defrag and making the restoration file size smaller. I have heard of some internet plugins making things run slower whilst using browers but that's all...

hi, just found and read the entire thread

for my part i've been strugling with some Gaming issues, most related with steam and the source engine, half-life 2 is kind of impossible to play, it keeps on freezing 1 second about each 10-20 seconds intervals. Monitoring my cpu / gpu shown me cpu peaks for each freezing time, I tried to close programs, update graphics drivers, reduce display settings to minimums and re-install the game, nothing seems to work properly.

As for Team Forteress 2 and Counter strike source I have way less freeze but still get some, the real issue is the frame rate that go from 80-90 to 15-20 for no apparent reasons.

It might be more of a Vista x64/steam thing, because newer games like COD4 and Dead Space do run perfectly (and full rez 1080p).

anyways i'll know for sure soon, i'm doing a clean install of Win 7 this weekend.

Does anyone else have/had these kind of issue?

I'll post updates after my installation of win7.

    http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/8456-windows-7-rc-acer-laptop-amazing.html

There is someone who tried it and said most worked fairly well. I ran the Win7 Upgrade Adviser (which is available from Microsoft), and most everything was compatible, except some random thing I forgot and the fingerprint driver/software, which seemed to work in this other forum post.

I just got my 8930G! I love it. Works really nicely, even better than the desktop I am posting from this now that cost more than twice as much... I do have a few questions. Sorry if I didn't search well enough, but this is a long thread!

    1. Has anyone repartitioned the 8930G 320gb hard drive? I am in 4 clumsy partitions of like 3gb, 15gb, 135gb, and 144gb... Please let me know the best way to partition as well.
    2. Has anyone had Ubuntu work on partition, or with Wubi?
    3. I just installed BIOS to 1.13, which came out last month. Worked fine, uninstalled bio protection to install the new fingerprint driver (which came out yesterday, according to Acer, download here), I booted with a BCD problem, and it would not load windows. Frustrated, I downloaded the Windows recovery disc that has become really popular on a small blog (just search around for it...), and it fixed it, but all the acer settings, audio, secure drive, etc. programs were gone. I'm clueless!?

Thanks to all who help on this forum, and I hope to become a help as well!

Neither Acer (according to their site the part number doesn't exist) nor anybody selling the laptop can answer me this, maybe you guys can:

    http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Acer_Aspire_8930G_Laptop_LX.ASY0X.449/version.asp?switcht=inc

1: Anyone know if this particular model has the 300nit screen or the 220?
2: Anyone have an Mpeg4 DVB-T tuner with this laptop? Or is it Mpeg2 only? Also, will it input analog?
3: I presume any version with 4GB of mem comes with the 64bit Vista? Would be pretty stupid to sell it with the 32bit
version although I wouldn't put it past anyone.

I've tried getting answers to these questions but Acer actually told me to go ask on an internet forum! You'd think there wasn't a major recession on.

Perhaps switch to a more lightweight OS?
Adding another 4.1 kg is bad for your back ;-)

I would say, start collecting the latest drivers & Acer programs.
I can also recommend doing a fresh install, the acer install is full of stuff I don't want / need and takes a few hours before you can use the laptop.
Also it uses up disk space with it's 'backup' which is basically a factory reset, which again installs all the crap you don't want/need.

Just make your own install backup after you have it up and running (just copy the partition with a advanced disk manager to a backup drive).

    ;-)

18,4" Full HD, high brightness ( 300-nit), Acer CineCrystal TFT LCD breedbeeld scherm, two lamps, ondersteunt multi-window viewing via Acer GridVista, so yes.

Mine doesn't even have a DVB-T tuner. But the versions that have DVB-T have this. Digital( DVB-T) TV-tuner supporting hardware MPEG-2 stream encoding and DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial) standard (6 to 8 MHz). And since it is D(digital)VB-T there is mostlikely no analog input.

I have a 32 bit vista home premium version with 4gb. The extra gb is used for the vcard.

I can always strap the Imac Intel I have on my back. Especially since they change from putting a Leopard inside to Snow. I am just worried that Snow might melt. :)

About the fresh install I can tell you I had the same experience with my Toshiba. After a fresh install I removed all the "garbage" extra's.

First I will want to get to know the Acer a bit (Especially Vista) and then I will most probably follow your advise.

    Hey guys.
    I have a 8930, not sure which model, but it's a Core 2 Duo T5800, 4gb ddr4 ram, and a Nvidia 9600M GT.

The current driver I have is version 7.15.11.7626 and the driver date is listed as 01/08/2008. I try to update the driver by going to the device manager, then the properties of the 9600 and using the "Update Driver..." button. It says Windows has determined that the driver is up-to-date.

I'm pretty sure that's wrong. There's newer drivers on the nvidia website, but, i'm not sure which version to download.

    Any help is appreciated!

Had my 8930G for a week now and tried to hook it up to my Panasonic Plasma via my Onkyo 806 receiver via HDMI to play a bluray. At first all I got was a picture on the laptop screen and sound from my home cinema 5.1 setup via the Onkyo. I then tried to output to HDMI after connecting as someone suggested to do but when I right click on the soud icon in the taskbar all I get is the Realtek HD sound option, nothing listed for Nvidea HDMI output. Where am I going wrong???

I've had my 8930G for about a year now and it's mostly been nothing but love.
I got one because I was mugged of my previous laptop and I needed somethin that could handle games as well as 3d software. The giant screen was pretty much what sealed the deal.

However, a week after having my new laptop it bricked. I took it back got a new one and have been on that one since.

Recently though, my GPU has been getting extremely hot. Under stress it will get upwards of 100 degrees.
I've got all the latest drivers and have been running on Windows7 for a few months now with no issues whatsoever. CPU is a cool 55, HDD is about 46, but GPU is idling at 66/70 spiking up to 100 with stress.

With that said, tomorrow I'll be getting some compressed air and cleaning it out for the first time. I'd just like to know if anyone else has been having serious overheating issues..

If I made a new topic, it might get locked, so I just wanted to use this thread to complain.

I have an Acer Aspire 8920 that I got about a year and a month ago.

I had to ship it back twice for repairs. Once because it would not charge correctly, and again because the front speakers were all basically dead, and I figured I should get it fixed before the warranty runs out.

Now my monster won't power on correctly. The power light just flashes really quickly when you hit the power button. If I take the battery out and try different setups, it sometimes works, but I think it's just going to get worse and nothing will fix it.

In summary: I hate my Aspire 8920 and I wish I never paid close to $2000 for it. For that, I could of build my own desktop, and had money left over to get a 30" TV/monitor and a netbook, and had a much cooler setup.

Now, I do have another 1 year warranty from Newegg, so I can still get it repaired, I hope, but this charging issue may be covered under the parts/labor warranty from my charging repair.

EXCEPT Acer's automated phone system just tells me my warranty is expired and won't let me talk to a real person. :( Ugh.

Is there anyone else who wishes they never bought their Acer Gemstone computer?

I've got the same problem I think it's driver related. Some time ago I had a driver installed which caused this overheating and made the laptop shut down when it was too hot. Then I installed some other drivers which gave a huge performance boost but again, overheating and shutting down.

Now i'm gonna try the stock drivers and see if this helps...

    Gents.

I am the recent proud owner of a Acer aspire 8930G.

    Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 2 GHz - 2MB L2 Cache,
    RAM - 4 GB DDR3
    Hard Drive - 320 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 7200 rpm
Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit
    Screen - 18.4' TFT CineCrystal
Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS

There were 3 deciding factors as to why i didn't get the higher spec machine,
    1. The wife.
    2. The wife.
    3. The wife.

I have read through the forum and i noticed a lot of you guys saying to get rid of the garbage that comes with it to speed things up etc, but i am one of those people that always thinks i may need this or i may need that just in case.

I want to trim things down to make my new pride and joy clean and mean so what i am basically looking for is some guidance as to what is considered excess to needs.

Loving the thread by the way.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi, glad to hear youve got youself an 8930G. You'll probably die from boredom on this forum waiting for a response to any of your questions.......I'm new here too and have posted several threads and received no response from anyone so far ( nearly 3 weeks). I asked the same question about excess software and have come to my own conclusions without any help from the guys on this forum.
You can get rid of McAfee as its a 60 day trial unless you ar going to upgrade. Same with Microsoft Office trial. Theres another trila package called Power...something to do with DVD editing which can go. Have a lok through and decide what you might use again. If you create restore disks you can delete anything and restore to original at any time.

Just do a clean install of vista, you don't need those pre installed things.
Make sure you have the right drivers from the acer site & if you can; install vista 64 bit, performance goes way up!

When I first got the laptop, I didn't even bother to start up the system with all the bloatware, I just put in my Vista x64 DVD and reformatted it right off the bat.

I've used Windows 7: Build 7600 x64 for a good 2 weeks now and I must say, it's so much faster than Vista x64; from the boot time to the responsiveness and overall performance, everything runs so smoothly. I've had no trouble with stability, drivers, or even software compatibility.

Here are some quick specs of my system:
    Acer 8930G
    4GB DDR3
    T9500 @ 2.6GHz
    WD 500GB 7200RPM (x2)
    Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT (1GB)
    Blu-Ray
    18.4" 1920x1080
