Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster!
Ok, so i got myself one of these lil' beauties last week, primarily for Photoshop purposes and as a portable Blu-Ray player, and it serves its purpose perfectly!
I just have 3 questions:
1) Does it have a TV Tuner? I've read from numerous sources that this particular laptop has a built in TV Tuner, but when i run WMC, it states there isn't one installed. Do i have to download any Drivers to enable it?? I noticed on the Acer FTP site that there is a driver available for something called "TV_Tuner_AverMedia_A310_v1.1.x.29"...
2) Does the built in Card Reader work with SD-HC devices (the higher capacity SD Cards)? If so, i was thinking about utilising a permanent 8GB SD-HC Card in it to exploit the Windows Readyboost function of Vista, and provide some spare storage space.
3) Lastly, how do i get my resolution set up correcty via HDMI on my 32" Samsung LCD TV? When i plug the laptop in, the picture shows and the sound works fine, but the resolution is completely wrong. I have tried all of the resolution settings within the NVidia control panel, but it appears that sections of the screen, from all 4 edges, are missing on my Samsung screen.
Any assistance is much appreciated!

Cheers mate...looks like we're only helping each other here, haha!
Yeah i noticed that there are LOADS of different specs for this laptop, and i was told that my one does...but obviously not by default!
As for the SDHC, that's good to know. I know the readyboost won't really help that much, but apparently it helps boot frequently used programs a lil' bit faster...besides, it's always nice to have some portable storage space around.
As for my TV, i honestly have no idea. However, considering how much i spent on it, i wouldn't have thought it would be 1080p. Is there anything i can do then to make it display properly?
Thanks! -
With regards to ready boost, the system already has 4gb ram and if you are running vista 32 bit then it will only let u use max 3.5gb too. It looks like best option is to use vista 64 bit, your product code on bottom of laptop will work with that too. -
Anyone else seen this and cured it?
Also - ran 3dmark Vantage and got problems with v low frame rate on directx 10 tests (my 8930 G has Q9000 quad core cpu, and 9600GT 1GB dedicated) - what am I doing wrong, it's almost as if its not connected.
lastly - the keyboard is dreadful! - too small!! -
You having a laugh abou the keyboard? Probably the biggest laptop keyboard out there. Same size as my desktop keyboard. -
I know it sounds stupid - but the keys are close together and the Left ctrl & shift are small - previously I used a 17" Dell Vostro keyboard - much better!
Also discovered my Acer has an Avermedia TV Tuner - bonus - though can't get it to tune in to any channels - based in UK.
Anyone had success with this? -
hi , i`m from germany , i bought a brand new acer aspire 8930g ... i was disapointed of my system work ... so i`ve tryed to install windows xp .... didn`t find drivers ... MY BAD WAS THAT I DIDN`T MAKE AN RECOVERY DVD
(( so what should i do to have back my windows with all factory drivers and programs !? CAN ANYBODY MAKE ME A COPY ... ? PLEASE ANSWER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ! if possible with vista in english ! THANK YOU VERY MUCH !
-
I removed the sound card from Device Manager so none was available.
Installed the Nvdia display driver which also contains an audio driver.
Installed the Realtek Audio driver.
To adjust the volume properties:-
Right click on the volume control in the sys tray
Select playback devices
Select properties on realtek hd audio
Changed the levels on all the speakers
I then changed the volume in arcade deluxe and hey presto! -

-
thank you for your time Big Col ! it dosn`t work ... i tryed before
i realy need a recovery cd ...
or is there anything else i can do ? Thank you , i wait for your answers asap !

just download a CD/DVD and use the key on the sticker
The laptop comes with a license, so you could download via Microsoft I think.
just check their site
you can download the drivers and utilities online from acer etc... -
I'm very happy with my laptop... using it with Windows7 64bit and with latest 186.91 Mobile WHQL also overclocked the GPU from default 500/400/1250 @ 650/450/1625 (these are the same speeds as the 9700M GT & and run Stable)
But now I have 3 question's:
1.how to overclock the CPU (dualcore 7400)
2.how to replace it with a Quadcore (where to buy & what prices)
3.replacing the GPU with for example a 280M or just 9800M GT or 260M etc.
(o and allmost forgot, where the hell can I find laptop videocard's for sale!)
Ask me any question's about the current GPU and I'll tell you everything
700/500/1750 Overclock works but from 650 & up it becomes instable in alot of games, for example RaceDriver GRID -
How do I overclock my graphics card? I cannot see options for this?
Also what does the numbers relate to?
500/400/1250 @ 650/450/1625
Which is core, memory etc?
Is core 500 to 650?
shader 1250 to 1625?
memory 400 to 450?
Want to get the best out of my system. I have a quad core q9000 can that be overclocked too and if so what to? cheers -
To overclock the video card download dox drivers just google I am using 185.85 and nvidia system tools for their website and you will now have overclocking options in the nvidia control panel so overclock away.
You can't overclock the cpu unless the author of set fsb gets the clock generator supported which seems unlikely. -
My BIOS version is 1.05.
The European website has 3 versions. Should I update?
Any help is appreciated, -
Ok people.. here my GPU Overclock tuttorial!
Download the following progs/toolz:
1. DriveSweeper 2.x Beta
2. Nvidia NTUNE (part of Nvidia SystemTools 6.05)
3. Nvidia GPU driver WHQL 186.91 (in my case W7x64Bit)
4. Nvidia PhysX driver (latest)
(all these above can be found via www.Guru3D.com)
STEP1.Install DriveSweeper / Uninstall Nvidia GPU + PhysX driver
STEP2.Boot to Windows SafeMode (F8)/ Start DriveSweeper and "Analyze" GPU + PhysX the "Clean"
STEP3.Restart, the install latest GPU driver + PhysX/ Reboot
STEP4.Install NTUNE (you can extract via NvidiaSystemToolz because you don't need those other 2 nvidia systemtools parts)
STEP5.Reboot, goto NVIDIA DisplayProperties/ you will notice a extra tab... accept license agreement!
STEP6.Now Enter the wanted OverClock numbers... / CORE 500 to 650*2.5=(default=1250)1625 Shader & (400=default)450MEM
Think this will be more then enough don't you think
BTW. I use BIOS .12 and my friends .13 works fine to!
Now I want to know how to OC my 2GH Dualcore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
I'm interesting in a 8930g laptop. But I'm a doubt if It's better get one with a quadcore processor (Q9000) or another one with a dualcore (P8600).
Why? -
for example 2.0Ghz C2D can often outrun 2.0Ghz QUAD
so if I were you invest in 2.4Ghz + QUAD or 2nd best C2D -
And, between an ACER 8930G and HP HDX18, both with similar specifications and price, what's the better choice?
-
Has anyone with the 8930G experienced problems with it overheating at all? I've had this laptop for about 6 months with no problems. I started playing GTA IV about three months ago and in the last 2-3 weeks I have had the laptop simply switch off after playing for between 10 and 15 minutes.
When this happens, the whole laptop simply switches itself off. It doesn't occur when using windows/watching DVDs etc but only when 3D gaming - it does sometimes do the same thing when playing Star Wars - KOTOR (old game, but I missed it first time round).
I've also installed NHC (notebook hardware control) which seems to indicate my CPU temp can reach up to 90 degrees C (the temperature being measured is Thermal Zone One as opposed to the actual CPU core temp).
Anyway, if anyone has had a similar problem, I would love to hear about it. Have been reading up and a few people cite dust as a possible cause. -
Do you have an 9600 or 9700 nvidia graphics card. I have heard these problem about 9700 nvidia graphic card.
-
Will this GPU fit?
280M GTX for 490dollars
http://mivasecure.abac.com/rjtech/m...duct_Code=VGA-280M-M570TU&Category_Code=OTHER
laptop test say its 3Dmark Vantage score =6935 compared to my 9600M GT =1472
Holy sjit that's allmost 3times faster!! -
Can anyone tell me if their acer wakes from sleep at god awful times in the morning or is it just my laptop? I've been having this problem for a while now but i cant seem to resolve it. My laptop keeps waking with the source being the RTC from the event viewer, but i cant seem to disable this event from waking the machine. I have stopped internet time sync and also disabled any devices from waking the machine using the powercfg in the command line. If i set it to hibernate then the issue doesn't arise. I think it is related to the ty insyde h2 bios that comes with this laptop. Anyone?
-
Ok - I'm pretty new to all this, so bear with me.
Want to add a 2nd HDD to my 8930G - I have the Quad Core Q9000 - ultimately I would like to install a 2nd OS - maybe Windows 7.
What HDD drive should I go for, and are there instructions on how to fit it?
The current drive shipped with my model is Seagate Momentus 5400.6 ST9500325AS 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive.
I'd prefer something a faster if poss - what can I get away with that i trouble free?
Also - how can I tell if I can install a 64bit OS? -
minimun space I'd recommend 320GB prefer avg. 500GB if you can afford 1TB
64bit Windows7 is a must!
O and BTW a SSD harddrive s the fastest of course but you pay the price -
Also - how do I know if I can run Windows 7 64bit? -
All the Acer 8930G models have x64 architecture, means compatible
7200rpm 500GB good choice... ehm my best expirence is with Hitachi
but there aren't many that produce 7200... 5400 is mainstream
SO technically all 7200 will suffice .... goodluck -
Sorry, but how do you know which is the features of your installed hard disk? I know how to see capacity but, how can I see rpm for this?
I am very interesting in buy these 8930g model with a quadcore processor, but I am worring about overheating of this model when you play 3d games. Do you have this problem? Thanks!
PD: Excuse me for my bad English. -
Get the WD 'Black Scorpio' edition SATA II hard drive and they are fast.
-
Overheating?? nah... no big problem even with GPU overclock never see temps above 77C  -
And has your notebook the Q9000 quad processor? And which graphics chipset? Thanks.
-
This laptop AIRFLOW is great, that's why I know C2Q processors are no problem -
The AIRFLOW in my 8930 is a joke. One tiny fan to cool both the C2D T9400 and the 9700M GT ?? lol, no wonder my GPU hits 100 degrees regularly. But for the rest its not a bad machine. Love the screen
-
... I would recommend removing the CPU amd apply some high quality cooling paste.. even if it's offcourse normal for you to have higher temps. than my 100 without OC is sick
I've also cleaned my fan after only using 2months it dropped -2c
Only when I upgrade my CPU or finally succeed in OCing, then I will customize the fan... there so much room down there, that's no problem for my mod-skillz! -
It was running at 91 in ati tool (stable for 10 mins).
Cleaned the fan as well with air from a can ;-)
GPU dropped by 1 C
Made the grating above the cpu/gpu fan a bit bigger, by removing some of the fan grill. GPU Temp dropped another 2 C to 88 C.
I cut it like this:
X = X = X = X = X
= X = X = X = X =
= = = = = = = = =
= X = X = X = X =
X = X = X = X = X
Where X is where I cut the little grill thingy.
Please note that I could be missing a line ;-)
Don't do this if you are going to hold me responsible ;-)
Also note this modification will void the warranty (even though its just the plastic)
My Logitech stand couldn't really hold this laptop (not stable, anyways).
So I also added extra cooling by making my own raised notebook stand.
Now it's running with OC stable at 86 C in ati tool
Mine seems to shut off at 95
So I wanted to keep it further away from 90 degrees
86 seems to be enough for more overclocking
I didn't even try somthing like applying artic silver yet
Here is how I made my notebook stand:
- drew a design, guess/measure the angles and sizes you'll need
- Also used a wooden plank cut in two
- And a perforated metal plate as the top
- Added 2 spokes from side to side for support
- 12 V, 300 mA adapter (switchable, so that i can turn it down to decrease noise)
- creative wiring to create a connector for the adapter (I didnt want to wreck it ;-) (drilled a hole in one side (just enough for the plug, not all the way through), inserted a metal plate and a nail that would snugly fit inside the adapter)
- 1 x 4 pin molex connector from a dead PSU, connected to the connector (the nail and the metal plate)
- 1 x 4 pin molex to 3 pin molex (connected to the 4 pin molex)
- 1 x 12cm Fan (connected to the 3 pin molex connector)
TIP: drill into the wood just far enough for the adapter, then go to the other side of the plank and drill at an angle so you can slide in the metal contact from the inside.
I am thinking about adding a USB hub and maybe a POT-meter for the fanspeed.
You could get easy lighting in the stand by adding fans with LED's, I decided against it, the 8930 is already such a lighthouse... -
Nice one Freezy
When I recover from my back surgery I'll do something simular!
BTW here are some benchmarks for the ppl how are willing to buy this laptop
GRID: 1360x768 2xAA [belangrijke dingen op HIGH .. de rest MED] (25-30fps)
NFS Shift: 1360x768 2xAA [ongeveer t zelfde als GRID] (25-35fps)
SF4: 1920x1080 [MAX -Soft shadow] benchmark gem.38
Mini Ninja's: 1920x1080 [MAX] (25-65fps)
Gears Of War: 1360x768 [MAX, behalve shadows] (25-45fps)
Order Of War: 1920x1080 [MAX] (20-35fps)
Cal Of Duty 4: 1920x1080 [MAX] (30-60fps)
Wolfenstein: 1360x768 [MAX] (20-45fps)
Batman Arkham: 1360x768 [HIGH + bloom & dynamic shadow, rest off] (30-50ps)
COJ BIB: 1360x768 [MAX] (30-50fps)
DMC4: 1360x768 4xAA [MAX] (25-70fps)
RE5: 1360X768 [MAX] (25-35fps)
but with OC from 500 to 650 etc. -
Would one of these work in this laptop?
http://www.amazon.com/64GB-SaberTooth-SATA-Mini-EeePC/dp/tech-data/B002E3INSW/ref=de_a_smtd
The slot is there (at least on mine ;-) )
Can anyone check if it's possible to boot from a mini PCI-e SSD?
Best of both worldsspeed of SSD and the 1TB storage of the two drives I have
There is also the PCI Express slot, but somehow I don't want my OS to be so easily removable ;-)
To g60force:
If you manage to make a more efficient cooling mod for this laptop, could you post pictures? :-D
I am also thinking about taking the screen apart and replacing the ACER logo with something a bit cooler. Adding a seethrough disk with an image to replace the logo should be easy enough using a custom window kit. -
Yes no problem HOWTO + PICS will be done, when I begin on the project -
but will it be bootable? ;-)

HELP Guys@!!! EXPERTs
Where can I buy a 'Acer Aspire 8930g-7665' in Europe, possibly England or Italy ?
Thanks
-
Experts Experts HELP !!!
Is IT possible to get acer aspire 8930g-7665 with Nvidia 9800 ?
Is it possible to get acer aspire 8930-7665 with "Quad 9100 or x9300" ? How much will it cost ?
Thanks in Advance. -
I would try a country with Euro's as a currency, since the British pound always seems so expensive compared to the euro ( www.xe.com to see the exchange rate).
It's best to find a store in your own country, otherwise you'll have to pay for shipping and possibly extra taxes (customs, as in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customs).
Your next step would be to find a site that compares prices of stores in your country. That way you'll be able to find more stores at once.
In the Netherlands we have www.tweakers.net, which has a daily updated database of prices, which they call PriceWatch. Which is AWESOME!
