Can you tell us a bit more about the card you've ordered (brand and model)? If the expresscard is 54mm it will fit.

Here are my scores on W7. but I do think the ranker sucks because I get too high scores for a 9600m GT and a p8400. Sorry for the language in the ranker, it's french. If someone wants some translation, please ask me =)

by the way I have a question... I'm about to order 2x 500GB 7200rpm Seagates
and a friend of mine (also with a 8930G) is going to use my 320GB as his 2nd ;)

NOW COMES THE BIG QUESTION :D

options for me PRO's / CON's would like to hear what you guys think!

    1. 2 Physical drives A.Windows(boot) B.Games(data)
    2. RAID 1Terabyte (and then divide in A & B partitions)
    3. RAID 500GB (x2 for speed only) then make A.part[100GB] & B.part[400GB]

What and why would you suggest option1 or 2, considering I play lots of games and use Flash10 / PhotoShop CS4 / DAZ 3D Studio for my design stuff!

    THNX in advance :p

goto www.laptopvideo2go.com you will find all you answers ;)

if the new modified INF of 195.62 is not available yet..

then do what I did (but remember @ own risk) use the INF from the International 195.55 desktop modified, then edit that INF and replace only the version number which can be found in the international 195.62 and replace

If you don't succeed let us know then ill upload my modified INF for the international 195.62 desktop for our lappy's :D

The raid options are basically not available in the 8930G's bios. So windows on a HDD and your data on another seems to be quite a good solution. I think you gonna order two seagate momentus 7200.4 so why would'nt you order only one momentus for your data and you game (pretty fast HDD by the way) and install Windows on a SSD? you know a good SSD won't cost you much more than a momentus and is really really faster! bye

I think it's the type of memory video card.

    Usually:
    Processor Q9000 --> 9600M GT 1 Gb DDR2
    Processor P8600 --> 9600M GT 512 MB DDR3

Yep. I think we can definitely pronounce dead your webcam. Should be listed there.

Edit: lsusb output in my machine:

My webcam entry is in bold. So, in short, your webcam is not working. This is beyond my knowledge, but you can search dmesg (kernel message log) for any signal of life of your webcam. This is the only thing I can't think of apart of the cam being broken.

That's no problem... I got one too. Just install it with at least bios 1.13 and you shouldn't run into problems. At least... I didn't. There is no need to under volt it regarding heat. Throttling is a different thing though.

Hi Karlos103! you can basically upgrade yout cpu with every C2D, not sure for C2Q but very likely. For the graphic card check the mxm connector you have and tell us if it's mxm 2 or mxm 3. bye =)

Thanks for the reply , do you know the exact model number etc of the fastest cpu i can get or should i just search the net ? as for the graphics card i have not taken a look at the connector but how can you tell the difference ??
    Cheers again for your help

So for the cpu the fastest you can get are t9900 and X9100. They're both 3.06ghz. The only difference between them is that X9100 is a core 2 extreme, but with the 8930g's bios it's quite useless. Moreover t9900 heat less and is a bit cheaper (try ebay). You can also look for a p9700 2.8ghz (best choice I think) because it has a very low TDP. Now if you want to try a quad you can get a q9000 2.0ghz, there're also q9100 and q9200 (2.26 and 2.4ghz) and the best is qx9300 @ 2.53ghz but it is too expensive.
For the mxm connector : Your graphic card must be mxm II or mxm III, the only way to know is to unplug you graphic card an compare the connector with some pictures you'll find on google. (the mxm II connector is divided into two parts and the mxm III into three parts). If you do not want to unplug you card to check I can do some research on the internet to find whether you card is mxm II or III. The best mxm II card you can find is a 9700m gt I assume, and for the mxm III I think it is a quadro FX 3700M. I'll check. Bye

Thankyou for the info , probably have a look for the 2.8ghz chip as by what you say it sem the best way to go ....had a quick look on net at mxm connectors and can see what you mean , will take back of laptop tomorrow and have a look .
Is it an easy job to change the chip and graphics card ? just need thermal paste and re-use original heat sink ?

    Thanks

I'm in a search for a cooler suitable to this big laptop. I've read here in the forums that the best one for it might be NZXT's Cryo LX.

This cooler is unavailable here where I live and even in the whole Europe. A shopkeeper even told me that it is discontinued according to NZXT themselves. I can order it through eBay from USA, but I have access to physical stores which offer the Enermax Aeolus and the Thermaltake Massive23 CS. Both at roughly the same (somewhat high) price.

Should I get the NZXT or one of the two aforementioned coolers? Which one is better in such case? Shipping from USA for the Cryo LX is almost 70% of the price of the cooler itself, but if it is that good I'd rather pay for it than waste my money on a worse product.

Feel free to comment about your cooling solutions for our 8930G.

Hi guys i could do with a bit of advice please

I need to replace the keyboard on my 8930G i have a new one for it and a set of instructions to do so they seem to be telling me to "push down on the lock and release the catches" with arrows pointing to the tabs located above the F1 F5 F9 etc keys. There seems to be no give to "push down" on I have had the 2 end ones free by brute force which made me and the laptop wince. There i stopped as attacking my beloved with a screwdriver is not my idea of fun despite being an engineer myself. Does anyone know of an easier/safer way of doing this?

Well karl, it is very easy to change the cpu and the gpu. just remove the heatsink, change your chip or gc apply thermal grease put back the heatsink and it is done! And BTW buy a good thermal paste, not too cheap one. Bye

MY x9100 will be arriving on 2nd Dec... Will keep you guys posted..

I chose X9100 over T9900 simply due to the fact that X9100 was on cheaper deal. My worst fear is being duped by that Chinese seller :(

Ohh BTW my Acer Windows 7 Ultimate Disc arrived today :D

There is only around 11% percent extra power by fitting T9400 , unless you use cpu intensive programs you will not see any real difference.

If you are gaming, then you will get around 10% FPS increase most of the time

And BTW if my CPU upgrade goes well then I would want to sell my C2D T9400 2.53Ghz for £150. Its been used for barely 15 days and it doesn't throttle. :D

    Anyone interested ?

Hi, I've been following this thread for a while since I recently bought a used 8930G for a Norwegian webshop. The GPU has been replaced on my machine, I guess that's why it was half the price of a new one. I got the the P8600, 9700GT, 4GB, 320GB. Yesterday I installed an SSD and ordered a used Seagate momentus 500gb. The performance of this machine is excellent ;)

There has been som inquieries about raid support, but since the chipset isn't ICH9R, it will not support raid.

    Hello all,

Can the 8930g be upgraded to 8gb of ram? As prices of memory are falling down it is becoming a very interesting upgrade for those of us who use memory-hungry applications under a 64 bits os.

    Thank you very much,

    Francisco Isla.

    By the way,

I tried upgrading the notebook to a q9200 processor with no luck. The computer was flashed to the latest bios so chancer are very slim that Acer will add down the road the necesary microcode to the bios to accept platform-compatible cpus. I thought that this info is probably interesting for the rest of the owners.

    Regards.

It is most likely an INTEL PM45 chipset, but if you download cpu-z and run it, in the mainboard section under chipset, it will tell you.

It should talk 8GB, but i have heard that some manufactures can put a cap on the max memoey.

Hello and thanks for the reply,

As you guessed well, the chipset is a PM45. However my doubt lies on wether the 8930g supports 8gb or not by manufacturer (implementation/restriction). I did the mistake of assuming that it would support a q9200 processor given that other brands with the same chipsed and insyde bios did... and it didn't work. That is why I am taking a cautious aproach with the memory.

Regards and have a good day,

    Francisco.

There is also a registry patch to reverse the direction, appearantly it's in reverse for 64x bit systems.

    Found the solution:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=293661&page=2

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Validity\vfs101]
    "swipeDirection"=dword:00000001

Btw just for anyone that is interested, you can find out how much your battery has deteriorated since purchase. Simply type 'powercfg -energy' in cmd and wait 60 secs until a report is generated you can see the standard 'Design Capacity' and the actual 'Last Full Charge'.

That sucks. You had a black screen when starting the laptop? what differs betwen the 8930G with a q9000 and 8930g with c2d... Acer wouldn't tell...
