It's very dependent on which codec and format you are using. For instance, the DiVX encoder uses all four threads and even at 2 GHz, the Quads easily bested the 3GHz duals... The Xvid does not seem to be highly multithreaded... YMMV.

However on stuff such as filters on a large image or 3D rendering (which I do extensively), the quads become more of an advantage.

I have an 8930, and had almost 3 hours of battery life in Vista and all of the beta versions of 7. Now thet I have the retail version I can only get 20 minuites or so running off the battery. It will show 95% charge and then just power off. If I reboot, it shows 3% or less battery life, and powers off within a minuite. What is rediculous is that I can then leave it unplugged, boot with an Ubuntu Live cd and run the laptop another 2 hours off the battery. So it's not in any way a battery problem, its the way Windows 7 detects the battery state.

Is not the solution. I think is another problem but I´m not an expert about this:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...r-aspire-gemstone-blue-throttling-issues.html

    Estracted from the abave post:
"All we know for certain is that the chipset has reason to force the CPU to throttle, running it at a lower clock speed and thus ruining your performance."

I upgraded from 8930G to 8935G. Well right now i am 100% satisfied.

The screen of 8930G is slightly yellowish while 8935G is as white as you get. The colour reproduction on 8930G is warm. The difference is probably due to different monitor profiles being used.

    Advantages of 8935G over 8930G
    1. Absolutely no throttling/heating problems as GPU remains at 60 degrees C under heavy gaming
    2. Backlit keyboard with chiclet style
    3. The circular volume switch is just amazing and actually gets used.
    4. Laptop looks less alien than 8930G
    5. GPU 4670XT is around 20% faster than 9700m GT

Have you tried standing on your head? :D

But seriously, go to the Acer site and try downloading the latest drivers. It might solve your problem for you.

Tried installing all the drivers from the ACER website.
If I select the Crystal Eye camera normally it has my image sitting correctly. When I try to use the camera with programs online, it decides to flip me upside down.
Also can't run the webcam in HD. It just seems to start, hold an image for a few seconds, start again, hold the image again, repeat, etc...

Haha just yanking ya. Probably just some quirk with the driver. have you tried any earlier versions?

That's very strange. I've got the latest drivers installed and I don't have any problem with it working with software. I remember when I first got my 8930g the original driver was crappy and it recorded everything at the wrong rate and the sound never matched the video.

Try uninstalling, reinstalling the driver and perhaps the software that's giving you the trouble. If it works OK with Acers own software, then one can naturally assume that it is an issue with the other software.

Just a note for the owners of 8930g:

Dont forget to Update BIOS to v1.20 for your 8930g
It fixes the problem with "dead cine dash"...

If you want compatible drivers with windows7(32) tell me

I have a strange problem with my 8930g: when I restart the laptop in Windows7 it turns down, then it turns on, but I see nothing on the screen!!
I must take out the battery, take out the plug, replace the battery, replace plug to start the system!
If I choose shutdown in windows everything works ok.

I tried everything for this issue, MS patches etc, but no luck...

Any ideas?? anybody with same prob?

ps: this issue happens only in windows7, not in the other partition working with vista!

    Thank You

    Hi all,

I was hoping that someone would be able to help me out? I have two HDD's in my 8930g and have been running W7 64bit on one and Ubuntu 64bit on the other with no problems.

I have now installed Vista 32bit on a partition on the same drive as I had Ubuntu 64bit but now Vista takes over when it boots and I haven't been able to access Ubuntu since.

How do I boot from a partition on a drive? I can only see how to change the boot drive in the Bios....

    Advice would be greatfully appreciated.

You will need to install a boot manager of some sort (W7 has it's own but Vista didn't)

Otherwise Windows is just doing as designed and looking at drives inthe BIOS specified order and attempting to boot from the first active partition it sees when counting up the discoverable partitions

You may find that reinstalling your distro of Ubuntu now lets it handle it for you anyway, otherwise:

I dont know if you have solved it, but the same issue happened to me. It started when I installed unofficial Nvidia drivers, and I tried everything with no luck. The solution was to install the last official drivers. Regards.

    Hi.

I don't know if anyone can help me or not.

My son installed Windows 7 on his 8930g. Before doing this he formatted every drive. He now wants to revert back to vista. I have tried ALT F10 but this option is not available. Because he formatted everything there is no old windows folder.

Is there anyway of returning the 8930g back to factory settings?

    Thanks for any help.

Ordering recovery disks would probably be the way to go. Normally costs just a little over $20 in the US.

I thought that might be the best option. I live in the UK. Do I just contact acer and tell them what I need?

    Cheers

I just got the Beta Notebook Verde drivers. (257.15) Unlike the other driver versions, I still have brightness control with this driver! And (I don't know how I'll try this) apparently it enables 3d support. Now I just need to get either a 3d laptop screen to fit this or a 3d hdtv! :D

I have a couple of questions.

CPU throttling and lack of VT support are the design issues. To my understanding Acer should fix it regadless of purschase date, with or without warranty.

I have 2 8930G's ( mein and my son. I love mein, it has the job done. ). One has extended warranty, for other it is already expired. I open problem to Acer Switzerland but forgot to mention that I have extended warranty. 5 days later received replay: case is closed because warranty has been expired. I opened it again with the code of extra 2 years warranty.

    Q1. Is Acer right?
Q2. Are these 2 problems fixable? ( Edit: I mean by Acer )
    Thanks.

Interesting!! If you find a 3d laptop screen that fits on the 8930G let us know, because I understand that the one that comes with the computer is not 3d able.

By the way, I think I read that exist NVIDIA drivers that enable 3d anaglyph graphics on games. Is that true? If so, has someone tried it?

Great demo!! It runs a bit slow, but the result is amazing.

I have tried the IZ3D drivers 1.10, with the free anaglyphic option, and tested with several options in different games, but I can't get it work as in the Unigine demo or as in this video (3D glasses needed):

    YouTube - Youtube 3D : Assassin's Creed 3D.HD720p (iz3d driver)

    Have you tried those drivers?

Go to support.acer.com and choose Drivers and Downloads. Then choose Notebooks, Acer Aspire, 8930g. then it'll allow you to access drivers, software, bios, and the nonexistent patches and documentation. but choose your OS first.

Note: Some Vista drivers work with the equivalent 7 OS. (Vista HP 64 => 7 HP 64)

I don't think eRecovery is installable unless the original master partition is available on the original hard drive. (Though I might be wrong on this)

Honestly, don't worry about the eRecovery. Just get Seagate's Diskwizard. It works wonders and is millenia ahead of that junk software Acer provides for recoveries. Wizard lets you back up the ENTIRE hard drive, meaning you can back your internal HDD(s) up to an external (I got the Cavalry 1TB from newegg) and you can actually boot from it if something happens to your main drives!
    Here's the link: | Seagate

It's fairly simple to use. Just remember your good friend the F1 key ;)

Hi, as this is my first post on this forum I am saying hallo to everybody :)

sorry for my English, I do my best, the reason I am writing to you is I have done really stupid thing to my girlfriends laptop ;/ She has go (had?!) Acer Aspire 8930g and since she bought this laptop she had a problem with the battery.

When it was up to charge the battery, sometimes laptop did not charge, I could see the sign Plugged in charging (but it did not charge), when this happened this big black thing on the charger (adapter?) stayed cold. So I read on-line that I have to upgrade the BIOS. So I did it wrong, don`t know why, I tried to upgrade it from 1.05 to 1.20 and after that laptop doesn`t work ;/ does not turn on!

I was upgrading it on a flat battery with the AC connected, now when I want to turn the laptop on nothing happen :-( I can see only the blue light which tells me that it is plugged in. When I press the power button, laptop doesn't make any sounds, no sign of the fan or booting, the screen stays black.

I tried to reset the power by holding the power button on for about 50 sec
with and without the AC plugged in and it did not change anything... I tried to do Bios recovering using 1gb Verbatim pen-drive I put a Fd file on the memory stick with and without the fla file in it, I tried to change the name of this files but I am not sure if I used a right one.

Trying to recover the Bios I pressed Fn + Esc and then power --> nothing the power light does not blink (flush)
I tried Windows Button along with B -----> nothing

Could u please tell me what can I do? Is there a possibility that I have permanently damaged the laptop? please help.

Thanks for the great link :D I have had nothing but problems, since not to long after I got this acer  issue,1,all but 1 of my usb,s worked  had to RMA.Bad motherboard.I have had to alt+f 11,several times since then  did not want to go there again. In seagate is it really as simple,as right clicking my image, saved in external drive, and selecting restore now  But your right about 1 thing is easier to use then, this,Acronis Backup & Recovery Workstation with Universal Restore v10.0.11345,that I borrowed from a friend ;),I now have an image from each :D seagate is faster at its processes  they are both acronis, software's :p
