    sawesome! :D

haven't updated yet, but the highest WEI i've been able to get with the 257.15 drivers is 4.9 (overclocked everything but memory on the gpu). Everything else on the system is a 6. We'll see how these drivers work.

Hello everyone, this is my first post, been reading alot of the discussions on this thread which i have found very interesting and helpful, however just a question which i am curious sorry if it has already been asked have tried looking through the thread to see but there are a fair few pages admittedly, right well i brought my Acer 8930g about a week ago came with vista x32 and ordered it with the windows 7 upgrade which is x32 as far as i can tell x64 is better for RAM and games or whatever, how can i get this to win 7 x64 secondly someone did ask about the TV tuner i can not get any signal what so ever and i am in the freeview area UK. Thank you all for reading any replys would be most appreciated. :)

Hi I to have an Acer Aspire 8930G laptop and I have been thinking about upgrading the processor that is in it (which is the the Intel Mobile Core 2 Quad Q9000) and I have been researching trying to see if the other processors you mentioned (Q9100, Q9200 or QX9300 Quads) above are "compatible" with my motherboard, compatible in the sense that not only will they "fit", but "work".

However, unlike you I have a different BIOS version mine is the V1.20 (Date: 16/03/2010) and what has halted my research into this, is like you mentioned above about the "Microcode" not being supported in the previous BIOS versions is that I still haven't managed to find out if it is supported for those processors in the version that I’ve got (V1.20) I was wandering if you would be able to help me with this dilemma? I would really appreciate it!

P.S. I have the same motherboard model, chipset and southbridge as you have posted if that's any help

    Thanks

    Greg

I think you have to stick with the one they gave (x32) if you plan to 'upgrade'. Otherwise you can just buy Windows 7 x64 and install fresh.

    Regarding the TV:
1: Check Device Manager and see if your drivers are installed; should be "Sound, Video and Game controllers > Avermedia A309 (Minicard, DVB-T)".
If it isnt there try installing the drivers from Acer Support

2: Are you connecting the antenna? (right hand side of laptop; next to USB ports)

3: Check your Media Centre settings are correct.

I get all the freeview channels but the reception isn't all that great, I think it might be better if I use a more powerful antenna with the adapter they supplied but havn't tried it.

I'm having major keyboard issues. The "beam me up Scotty" touchpad on the left hand side of the keyboard stopped working for a long time (couldn't unlock or anything let alone use) - I can now unlock it, but it has no effect on volume etc..
In a seperate issue, one of the shift keys appears to be getting stuck and also when I use left or right arrow keys, spurious characters (most oftenly "c") appear when I move the cursor.
On top of this, the main volume constantly diminishes to zero so I have to continually increase the volume every time I want to hear something.

Is this all touch pad related - anyone any ideas?

With regards to touchpad issues, remove the power supply from the 8930g, take out the battery and leave it for a couple of minutes. This should reset the touchpad for you.

I currently have the Acer 8930G,
    T6600 Core 2 Duo Proc
    Nvidia 9600GT 512MB

I know it's weak processing wise at the moment if I did get the x9100 processor upgrade would it be able to run call of duty modern warfare 1 & 2 at high quality graphics with good fps?

I run Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on mine and it works great! :) Delete the partition you have Windows installed on now, and create a new partition from that space.

I need to replace the DVD drive in my 8930G. Have any of you done this before? I took off ALL of the panels, took out the battery, and took out any screws that could have been keeping it in, but it still wont come out! :S Is the screw for it under the numpad or something? I haven't taken the numpad or keyboard off yet. I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss something before I started taking them off lol.

To remove the blu-ray drive, it is held in place by one screw underneath the unit. Unscrew that and the drive should just slid out.

Ive noticed that my laptop seems to heat up more than usual now. I'm figuring that it may be some dust thats causing this and have decided to clean it out. Can anyone tell me which is the best part to remove so I can clean and reduce the risk of any damage

There is a removable 'section' on the bottom of the laptop held in by a few screws. This section will pull away and reveal the memory/processor/fan assembly. The fan can be removed easily by removing the three ( if I remember right ) screws and carefully removing the cabled white plug. It is easy then to get rid of dust, also check the metal 'fins' that help with the cooling, I just blew through mine by myself to clean - if you have a compressed air spray then all the better.

Well after using my machine just 2or3 times max in the last 6months... I'm in bed 90% of the day cuz of a second big back surgery ... and I must say having this bad boy is awesome since I can't use or transport my gaming rig..

StarCraft2 plays perfect on 1920x1080 Ultra texture... and shaders on medium and lights on low... the rest is near HIGH setting

    It's a lot of phun :D

Should STAY AWAY from that bios version as it will DRAIN BATTERY even when computer is totally turned off and not on power supply.

Big Bug bios. It's called the "battery killer, let's make money" bios.

What proof is there of this "bug"? This is the first I've heard of a BIOS draining a battery even if the latop is off.

IMO - the 1.20 bios solves the problem with the Cinedash not working and appears to be perfectly stable. Not had any battery problems but then I've had my 8930g for 18 months now and expect some degredation of battery life.

I have installed Win 7 on my 8930, and reloaded the required 'Drivers'.

I don't want to reload all the Acer software, but what software is it I need to install to get the Media controls on the left to work again.

Every afternoon, my laptop appears to be running a process or service that utilises most of the CPU and sends the fan into overdrive - I have tried various virus scans and looked in task manager but can't find the culprit - any advice?

It's already been toroughly tested, turn off your acer, take out the PSU cable ... (on a full battery) ... leave it like that overnight, turn your laptop back on and you ll see your battery has lost quite a lot of juice overnight ...

Please don't post crap replies, GOOGLE and YOU LL FIND, before you post.

And I ain't the one discovering it, found out myself on another forum, tested it myself and indeed the battery is drained in OFF mode without PSU on, and if you leave the PSU ON, the cells are being used while the laptop is off, hence the "battery killer bios" .... <sigh>

Do you have any USb Device (eg: Wireless Mouse Transmiter, ISB Drive)
that pluged which cause the Batt lesking after power off...?

How about unplug them all & Test again...

Is it really cause by BIOS v1.2 only?

Hello, Im having some problems with my soundcard

when i plug the headphones in sometimes they refuse to work and the laptop speakers still work

othertimes both work, headphones and laptop speakers.

i dont seem to be able to get the headphones to work on their own, Anyone got any ideas?

ive used the ones in the driver section of ACER.COM but no help. i then tried ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_8930/vista/Drivers/ and downloaded the soundcard settings from there > File:Audio_Realtek_ALC268_ALC885_ALC889_v6.0.1.5618.zip

anyone know where i can download updates? surely there must be newer ones. thanks for any help

(havent updated any drivers since purcasing last year) only windows updates etc. havent messed with any of the acer drivers other then the one above.

    Hi All
Since upgrading bios to 1.20 i find there is sometimes a delay when pressing keys on keyboard ....or you have to press it again to get it to work ....usually only happens the first time you press keyboard ....once typing its ok ....till you leave it for a while then may happen again .
This has only started since bios update ...sure i read somewhere on here that this was due to bios 1.20 ???
    Any help most appreciated

Hi, old problem, overheating issues. Under high load the system gets too hot, and the fan speed doesn't increase.

Does anyone know whether there is any piece of software or a setting that allows me to bump up the fan speed (I dont really care about the noise :)

I just don't want my lappy to randomly shut down because it's too retarded to adjust the fan speeds accordingly.

(Yes I did clean out the vents, yes I did replace the heat conductive paste)

Running on Windows 7 64 bit, no Acer software installed and all drivers from vendors up to date.

    Thanks!

    Cheers,
    Goog

Checked and it is set on active.

But I figured out a few things:

#1 Installed Windows, overheating issue still there

#2 The problem is that the GPU does not clock itself down anymore, like it is supposed to. Granted, I did use RivaTuner - but I installed a fresh Windows again with the lastest NVidia drivers, so I don't see how that could be related then.

#3 The fan speed does increase on load again after I installed Windows again.

Next thing I'll do is switching back from the 1.20 BIOS to 1.13.

Ok, I applied some high performance heat conductive paste (8 W/mK), and after 30 seconds of pretty much any 3d activity the reported temperature (speedfan) of the GPU spikes up over 100C.

I don't think this temperature is correct, it feels much lower than that. If it was in fact 100C I would burn my fingers touching the copper plate on the GPU. It feels much more about 70C. So I think it's a faulty temperature sensor.

    What are my options?
