Me too. 2 extra GB are better than nothing. Too bad I'm going to have to pay for 4 GB.

Have followed this thread for awhile, and never really noticed anyone talking about the extra pci-e slot that is beside the wireless card. I found a Avermedia A312 Mini Pci-e TV FM NTSC ATSC Tuner Card on Ebay. Will this work? Plus what about cables or connector on the right side near the usb ports. What goes there? Anyone have a clue or part numbers? I have looked, but can't find any specific information regarding adding a tv tuner card into this model if it didn't come with it stock.

The circle port on the right next to the USB ports is the connection for the stock TV tuner aerial (Avermedia A309)

I'm guessing your laptop didn't come with the TV tuner maybe?

Picture of the port and the Acer aerial for those interested; no visible part numbers on the aerial

    Listen up 8930g owners!

I am officially donating a quadro FX 2700m card to anyone with the guts to test it in their 8930g. It has some issues at higher clocks but I think its just from me messing with the vBIOS.
I'm doing it for the sake of knowledge. It is an MXM 2.1 III/HE graphics card, you will need to mod the heatsink or make a temporary solution because the mounting holes are different.

If the BIOS supports it at all, even over external monitor, it means that other g94 and maybe g92 cards will work, including the 9800m GTS and GS on up. I think this would certainly be beneficial to some wondering about the upgrade path of this laptop once the 9600m GT and even 4670 just aren't good for anything anymore.

    Hello!

Been following this thread for a long while. It has been a good resource.

I just bought a E8436 C0, 55W processor off ebay. A bit risky but if it works and I can keep the temp under control than it could be a good buy. If it fails I wasted $80 bucks and will get a x9100 for around $250. These processors have almost equal performance without overclocking. Will keep you posted on the results. I saw a translated chinese post online where someone had bought this processor originally for high end iMacs and it worked fine in his 8930g with good compound.

I had a question about the throttling problem however. I used throttlestop before to prevent stuttering gameplay. I have some questions below. Would be nice to get a straight answer instead of a link to another forum with 100 pages of posts.

    Questions:
Was this problem addressed in v1.20 or do you still need to use throttlestop? Is there a better solution than throttlestop?
What are safe heat levels for cpu?

    Thanks!

    I have a C0 E8435 in my 6930g , your 8930gs little brother.

The E8435 is too hot to handle without any undervolting. It runs at 1.2375volt stock. But with undervolting it's fine.

At 1.112v 3066 mhz i'm at 75-78°c full load (prime), while gaming it's lower. Even if your E8435 doesn't undervolt that well your laptop should be able to handle it since the 8930g's heatsinks is a little bigger.

    Good luck!

I'm very interested if your E8436(I believe you mean E8435) will work good.
If so i'm also buy one from ebay to upgrade my 8930G. It runs now a T6600. The upgrade to E8435 wil be great.

I just installed a 4gb stick into my 8930G, and now have 6GB!!! My RAM usage is no longer constantly at 48% :D I've noticed that applications open much quicker, didn't realise that it would make that much difference! Very happy with the purchase! Just need another 4GB to work and we'll be sorted :p

    If only it supported 8GB!

Anyway, I just did a reformat and now my Touchpad doesn't work! I tried digging through the Acer site and downloading the ones that used to work but nothing I do lets my use it. It's not a huge problem, but if anyone can identify the issue, that'd be great!

Hi, I just downloaded a modded 1.20 BIOS using slic 2.1. The filename is Acer.Aspire.8930G.1.20.ACER.SLP.21.manual.zip and I need to know if anyone has tried this since I don't want to do this without proper advise. I need this because I need the VT feature on.

    Thanks SOOOO much in advance.

I have bought a Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile E8435 3.06GHz 6M 1066 SLAQD CPU for my Acer 8930G. Is this a good buy and is it easy to chanche? I have chanche many in home pc's.

What is the advantage using VT?

Getting a strange problem... When I turn the laptop on, it powers up but doesn't go into POST or anything, the screen is black. The cinedash works, but there's nothing on screen. The power button its self isn't instant either, takes a few seconds to work. It'll sometimes stay like that and I have to hard reboot, or sometimes it'll cut its self out.
Tried it on battery power, battery out, mains etc.
I took the 4gb stick out, tried to boot and it worked the 2nd time, so I put the 4gb stick back in, same again, but no luck booting.
The last thing I tried was to take the plug out then put it back in, and it worked. This has happened twice today, problem arose whilst watching a movie on battery power and it went into hibernation, plugged the mains cable in and it wouldn't work at all.

What the fudge is going on??

I own a 8935G myself (Core 2 Duo T6600 2.2 Ghz, 4 GB ram, Ati Mobility Radeon HD 4670 XT 1 GB, Win 7 64 bit), and was wondering if it's upgradeable as well? Aren't they practically the same model?

I wouldn't mind buying a slightly faster CPU for it, although for the over one year I've been using it I've been satisfied with the performance. It can still handle most new games on 1920x1080 res and medium settings.

Is it safe to upgrade the CPU though, and will it cause any overheating issues? What kind of CPUs would you recommend, and what kind of CPUs fit in it? Oh yeah and how difficult is it to do for a laptop noob, can the old CPU still be applied back in if it doesn't work and such? :p

Don't know about the 8935G but the 8930G is really easy to access, well, everything! You shouldn't have to worry about heat too much as these 18.4" laptops are pretty chunky, and have good ventilation and big heat sinks! It's really easy to change the CPU, RAM, Hard drives etc. Old CPU can be put back in it if you really want to, just make sure you clean all of the old thermal paste off.
I had a T6600 in mine, bought an X9100 which increased the performance of the RAM which was a bonus! Overclockable too which is nice ;)

yeah the T6600 only runs at 800mhz, where the x9100 runs at 1066mhz
luckly acer put 1066mhz ram in the 8930g

yeah i get a little problem when i do a reboot.
works fine if i shutdown then turn the 8930g on

i think its something to do with the 4gb stick
maybe the reason acer put a max 4gb on the ram and not 6-8gb

Just received my E8435 CPU I got off ebay for $80 dollars plus $15 shipping (3.06C0, 55w).

I only had one hour on lunch to install it. Took out the old processor,"wiggled" heatsink pipe out (got some dust off off it too), Removed old grease from heatsink with paint thinner and coffee filter, Put new chip in, put a coat arctic silver 5 on the die, and put everything back. The computer did not seem to be overheating while idle. I had to return to work, I risked leaving it on so the AS5 could start to set. Gotta love that feeling when you press the ON button!

I did run the bench marks Windows 7 and my CPU score went from 5.1 to 6.6! My ram jumped up to 6.6 thanks to the FSB increasing from 800 to 1066.

If my house didn't burn down I will let you know how it performs under pressure (Dragon Age 2/CIV 5).

Due to it being the 55w chip, I'd suggest undervolting it to keep it a little bit cooler (I'd do it anyway to increase battery life)

As for your battery problem, Agony, I'd suggest you simply remove the battery when the laptop is off. How old is your battery? You know they lose their maximum capacity over time? Mine is down to 70% now after about a year of owning my 8930G, I have it out most of the time, only putting it in if it's raining and stuff (power cuts happen a lot around where I live)

    @shakennstirred

Have you managed to get windows to use all 6gb of RAM? According to the task manager it says there is 6140MB total, but only 4480 available. Under MSCONFIG the max memory is unchecked, so I don't know what is going on...

It's official, E8435 C0 55w works great! Was playing some games last night and it was running SMOOTH and loading screens (Opening to CIV 5 for example, starting a new game) were reduced to a fraction of the previous.

Thanks for the suggestion TPM, its running within normal parameters. The thermal performance will improve too as the paste sets, might apply some to the GPU.

    X9100 = $75 dollars per ghz EST (OC 3.325/$250)
    E8435 = $28 dollars per ghz EST (3.06/86)

Now if I can just get my blu-ray movies to work with my fresh install of windows 7. (I have acer arcade installed).

You could create your own powerplan and see if that helps? Just take all of the old settings from the balanced powerplan, edit them to suit your needs and save it.

I try that , when the on battery brightness is in 40% and on charge the brightness is 100% , when i shutdown the laptop on battery and i open it next time the on charge brightness is 40% like the on battery .
The only way not to do that is to use or make a plan that the on battery brightness is adjust to 100% so after shutdown it doesnt reset the on charge back to 40% its still 100%.
The problem is that i want something to work on battery 40% and saves the 100% brightness when its on charge.
Thanks a lot again Party master .

Weird. The only other things I'd suggest is to make sure all of your display drivers are up to date, and also try making a new user account and seeing if the problem still persists.

So after 2 weeks of having 6GB in (1x 2GB, 1x 4GB) I've had to take the 4GB stick out and put the old 2GB stick in, because I was getting this problem where the laptop wouldn't boot at all. Windows wasn't fully utilising the 6GB either which was a bit strange.
So I'm either going to sell that 4GB stick, or if anybody knows how to get this working properly, please let me know!

Mine simply wont boot at all. I think the RAM is being shared with the graphics

@Pantry: I just slapped a 4GB stick into mine (bringing it up to 6GB) a few days ago. I'll let you know if I encounter any errors similar to what you've described. Currently problem-free, although my CPU isn't up to the task of not crapping itself in order to check if the system is truly utilizing the full 6GB. And yes, the 9600M GT (probably the 9700M, as well) does share RAM where needed.

To recreate the problem I faced, let the battery die when watching a movie in full screen. Or do a hard reboot, try restarting the computer using the actual restart option rather than shutting down, then rebooting.

if you use the restart tab in windows start thats a soft reboot
and yes i have that problem 8 out of 10 times
but if you shutdown then press the power on button(hard reboot) mine starts 100% everytime

But i have make some mistakes. I must fikes this first, before i try it again.
When i keep of the cooler i wont look good and dont have taken a picture.
The lip by the red arrow, must that be up or down?
Where the blue arrow is, there is the cpu under.
What is under the red and green arrow? This is also a processor??

When i clean the heatsink, something jumps away.
I think it is from under the heatsink by the red and green arrow.
It's like grey gum. See picture, red arrow.

I have put new thermal paste on the cpu and the proccesor under the green/red arrows. Must i place back the grey gum?

    Hope someone can help me
